After months of speculation, the 10-year marriage of Jon & Kate Plus Eight's stars Kate and Jon Gosselin appears to be coming to an end, a source close to the situation tells PEOPLE.
Documents to initiate a legal split were filed in Pennsylvania Monday afternoon.
Fans who have watched the couple's popular TLC show – or read the voluminous coverage of the Gosselin marriage in the press – will hardly be surprised: The duo had long maintained a tense relationship, with Jon recently telling PEOPLE he wanted a less high-profile life, while Kate appeared to remain committed to their TV career.
In February, photos surfaced of Jon in the company of young women during a solo visit to see his mother, who was recuperating from surgery, in Huntingdon, Pa. The couple quickly attempted to quash rumors of problems. But in May, the scandal erupted again when 23-year-old Deanna Hummel was photographed driving Jon's car home from a bar late at night.
When the fifth season of the Gosselins' show premiered May 25, the couple admitted to having problems and not knowing where their relationship was headed. "Parents of multiples have triple the divorce rate," Kate said through tears. "I was thinking we were going to beat that. I don't know if I can say that anymore."
TLC promotions of the show are promising a major announcement about the family in Monday night's episode of Jon & Kate Plus Eight.

Ugh.
I used to watch this show when the kids were little but haven't been able to stomach it over the past year or so. Somewhere along the line, it stopped being about two parents raising eight children and it became about Kate Gosselin and her ridiculous "needs". I'm sorry, but there are a lot of large families in the world who are not making serious money an episode and getting so much stuff donated to them. She and Jon have some really adorable children who still stand a chance of becoming well-adjusted adults (provided poor Mady is able to deal with the damage that's clearly already been done), but if they don't get out of the national spotlight soon, those kids are screwed. If nothing else, Kate should not be doing cover stories for ANY magazines, tabloid or not. I know she can't singlehandedly stop the paparazzi but she can negate the amount of attention by doing everything she can to ignore it, for the sake of her children. They should have a good chunk of change stored up by now, as she's not raising a literal army. They're kids, they shouldn't have to work for their supper and that is essentially what is going on. It needs to stop now.

3. Check out their personal Web site and the contents of Kate's book. I find it fascinating that something like every fifth word in the text is "God," and they talk extensively about their church and the power of prayer and link a bunch of Christian music. But this part of their lives almost never comes up on the show -- except for the occasional religious symbol in the background. (Apparently there's at least one church-themed episode, but I have yet to see it.) I have zero problem with their religious beliefs and their willingness to share with others. It makes me curious, though, if TLC asks them to tone it down and/or edits out the God talk, or if Jon and Kate choose not to bring it up during their interviews.

It's better than 4 :p
Ugh. It kind of sucks that it's come to this. The poor kids will be so confused. I used to watched the show when they were little, but it's too depressing/annoying.

The two of them exploited their kids for their own gain.....
If they cared about their kids or the marriage, they would have stopped filming to try to work things out.
They didn't therefore they are egotistical money hounds.
They did this to themselves.

And because Kate is such a power-hungry Biatch, I'm sure she'll attempt for a spin-off....

I don't ever, ever, ever get sucked into tabloid ****, but this, for whatever reason, is irresistable for me. Sara watches the show, and I used to with her, but Kate turned into a real bitch, and I couldn't stand to watch anymore. The way she constantly bitches and degrades Jon is disgusting to watch. And Madi is just a big cry baby. So, Kate and Madi are the reasons I can't stomach it anymore. I think Jon initiated the divorce. He was sick of Kate's ****. I feel really bad for the children. I mean, kids survive divorce everyday, but not all kids survive it in front of cameras. They just need to shut the show down. The line needs to be drawn somewhere.

Mady is the way she is because of this show. She was the first sign that the show was bad for the kids. The littler ones, they don't really know anything else, but Cara and Mady remember a time when they were just girls with two parents and little chaos. All of a sudden, there are six babies and she has to share her parents not only with them, but with a camera crew and who knows what else. She can't handle it and nor should she have to. I'm glad the show is stopping before any of the littler ones start falling apart to the level that Mady has. And I hope Mady is able to re-adjust to a normal life, where she's not going through this issues in front of the world.

My eyes rolled so hard they fell out of my head.
But back to your question. Nobody. Except for you. Why do you always feel like you need some sort of attention or recognition?

It made me want to puke last night when he talked about how the money is all for the kids yet rumor has it that he's shopping for a place in Trump Towers. He and Kate both like the money.

Friggin' Speidi. Please send them back to whatever right wing Christian Barbie and Ken planet that dropped them off here. Please, I'm begging.

One would think they would have done that prior to filing for the dissolution of marriage and announcing the separation on national television. But whatever. Different strokes and all that.

Ooh. Intersting question. I wonder who the petitioner is?

I read that Kate is. "because of Jon's actions" Like she isn't to blame at all!
Kate says she needs the money - but they live a life like they have millons of dollars. They do, but they also have all of those children. I wonder how much they spent on their faces alone. (including teeth and hair) I wish they would have kept it simple - like you see in the old photos of them. The show needs to be stopped for good.

Nah. People take that step for all sorts of reasons; it does not always mean things are really over.
When I was practicing family law, there were quite a number of divorce petitions that were withdrawn after filing for various reasons (counseling, financial, etc.).
And as sick as it might be . . . there is always the question of ratings, books, etc. in this kind of situation. Drama and emotional crisis sells. :distress:
