30th anniversary is coming up....now would be the time to start planning it!

I would have thought she'd have done it 3 years ago for the 25th..It desperately needs to be remastered but don't hold your breath.

It'd be nice as a LP/CD release with cool poster or something.

I would absolutely buy a remastered Bella Donna, assuming that the mastering was well done and not the ultra-loud, hyper-compressed jobs that are too often done these days. A gold CD by one of the audiophile labels like MFSL or Audio Fidelity would be nice, as they generally produce superb sounding discs.

Actually, the existing CD of BD doesn't sound THAT bad, but I'm sure it could sound better.

As far as bonus tracks, the following would be nice to hear:
- Properly finished versions of "Gypsy" and "Gold And Braid": The master reels versions sound like the unfinished/rehearsal tracks that they are, but I think decent versions could be stitched together. "Gold And Braid" needs mixing work, because the vocal is way too low on the master reels versions.
- An extended "Blue Lamp": I have always been a bit frustrated with the released version because it fades out just as she is getting cranked up. There are some interesting vocal arrangements seen in the Crystal Visions documentary; I would be curious if those were ever laid down on tape.
- The live version of "I Need To Know" from the HBO concert.

Who the hell wouldn't??

Bella Donna & The Wild Heart both should be remastered with extra tracks.

Its a moot point. If Fleetwood Mac isn't going to acknowledge 30 years of Tusk, what makes anyone think Bella Donna will be feted with anything?

In all likelihood, its headed towards the cutout bin like the rest of Stevie's solo work. Its just the way things are.

Hell yes! But with the disintegration of Modern Records, who would be doing it?

Tusk was remastered in the 2cd set a few years ago, that will do for me. I would LOVE a remastered Bella Donna. It's still Stevie's best album and it's such a shame that thishasn't been done.

I wonder what's been holding Stevie back? If 3 Fleetwood Mac albums can be successfully remastered and re-released then why not one of her solo records? Especially the one that is, arguably, her most famous?

Hell yes I would! I'd re-buy them all...I wish they would do what they did with Elvis Costello's, The Pretenders, U2, etc....catalogs...

And as for FM....pick up where you left off and get to Mirage, the album that MOST needs remastering, IMHO, of all the cds out there....

Yes something needs to be done with Mirage!!! I feel that is an excellent album that suffers from a bad transition to cd.

Bella Donna & The Wild Heart both should be remastered with extra tracks.

Oh to dream! It's funny, much smaller artists have done this for their back catalogue, it's just silly and lazy that Bella Donna at the very least hasn't had some kind of anniversary edition treatment.

of course most of us would.

as far as bonus tracks, I don't really care as long as Julia is there.

Amen to that. Julia is probably my favourite ever Stevie outtake.

I would think Atlantic or Rhino would be able to do it, no sweat!

As for the bonus tracks, "Julia" is a no-brainer.....there's a finished version in the can, all set to go! After that, I'd like to see "Gold & Braid" and a studio version of "I Need To Know", then, if there's room, "Blue Lamp!":blob1:

First of all Rhino would most likely put it out, I think Atlantic and Rhino are both under the Warner Bros. umbrella and Modern fell under the Atlantic umbrella, so it's one big family. No problem there.
As for bonus tracks, Bella Donna runs just about 35 mins or so, so that leaves roughly 40 mins of room for bonus tracks. Based on the master reels alone they could do the entire album in demo form.
What they need to do is re-issue the album and include ALL of the original album artwork, early CD's sucked at including all original artwork and usually left most out. A cool bonus DVD might be the COMPLETE HBO concert.

No, but I probably would buy a new Stevie solo album, even if it doesn't consist of totally new songs, but of re-recorded songs that are bootlegged as decades old demo recordings.

skuncles
06-18-2009, 12:25 PM
I would rather Stevie release the demo over new recordings of the demos. The released version of "Smile At You" sucks compared to the demos. Same for "The Tower". In the case of "Smile At You" the anger is VERY present on the demo, but time has healed that wound and the released version is way too whimpy. Give us the demos, record new songs only.

No doubt about it
Bella Donna is one of the classic albums of all time and i would die to have a remastered copy with tracks like Julia Sanctuary etc

Bring it on!!!!!

I'd totally 'BUY' all of Stevie's solo cd again 'if' they are totally remastered with the original masters & lets see a cd holds alot....alot of music. They need to use it to its full potential really. I'd put some extra songs at the end whatever it takes to fill up the whole cd or close to it. It put 2 cds in all of them .....I'd pick the BEST of the masters or alternates /mixes or extended versions. I want the extended version to 'Blue Lamp' that was in the CV dvd. Sleeping Angel....Gold & Braid...Julia....The Dealer ETC...too much to chose from.....They could also in a different release the complete HBO concert full concert with all the cut out songs....The cd booklet should have wonderful outtake pictures esp those with the Blue Lamp.....I'd say a nice sized booklet....... Than I'd repeat this with the rest of her catalog...WH/RAL/Mirror/SA/TISL....heck give us another 'Box Set'.....or just re-issuse them that way.....of course I love the B.Dylan way......with all the extended/alter etc....not that I have any of them....but I did look at it and what Stevie could do with a set like that.....wow......She has many many options the question is will she do anything?? Sure a New cd would be nice but I don't know if that'll happen....heck all of this stuff is recorded already....get it out to your fans......for it to be lock up in some valuet collecting dust....is a shame really...same with the outtake photos as well......
I also agree Mac should re-issue Mirgae with an extra cd too.....Tango/Mask/Live with extras....all there video hits.......another shame......with many outtake pictures too.......but we get another Rumours....not that I don't like Rumours...but heck they could re-do Tusk again cause there are different versions still left.....with more outtake pictures as well.......IMO anyway.....:shrug::nod:

Its #3 or #4 for me as far as her solo albums go.. and that's not saying much, since there's a steep drop-off after #2, for me. BD is hardly Stevie's Rumours, to use an analogy. Plus, basically all of Bella Donna (8 of the 10 tracks) was already remastered and re-released on Enchanted, and I doubt the quality will be all that much different/better (unless you consider louder "better")

As far as the bonus tracks go, something tells me they wouldn't go too much further beyond Gold And Braid and maybe the solo version of Gypsy. If they pull a Reconsider Me-esque surprise out of their hat with something completely previously unheard... I still wouldn't buy it (I'd buy the track a la carte on iTunes or Amazon)

Because I already own a CD copy of Bella Donna. There has to be a point where you stop buying remastered crap with bonus tracks, you can't do it for every album that you already own that gets remastered. I enjoy Bella Donna just how I was meant to...

I think "Julia" is a definite no-brainer to be included....the fact that it was on the album and dropped at the last minute ~ there was actual artwork done! ~ makes it a prime candidate!

I would buy it, but they would have to do a better job with the bonus material. I think they need to really collect a LOT of the unreleased tunes and some of the outtakes and demos and create a really deluxe boxed set out of it with incredible prints and posters from photoshoot outtakes, beautiful printing and artwork, journals, etc. They should also release as much of the live material from the WWD Tour as they can (this could be electronic in FLAC format) and a bunch of the video (a remastered HD version of the COMPLETE HBO special - audio/video, the complete - or near complete - making-of-Bella Donna footage, etc.). It wouldn't cost them a whole lot and they could stand to make some serious coin on it.

Yeah, right. Last stroke of never.

A guy can dream, tho...

Personally, I just wish it was all outtakes/alternates/unrealsed songs etc.....than just a rehash of what we all have....but like thats gonna happen....I guess its a 'dream' but heck some 'dreams' are worth having aren't they....LOL:laugh:

Well I have the solo CDs of all 16 (majority of them being a legal shop-bought copy). I'm not quite as bad as someone like John (wetcamelfood) who collects every album that every FM member appears on. That would take dedication.

If there were a couple of new tracks on the album then I'd just buy the new tracks not the whole new album.

Yes I was very glad when Ms Crow didn't join the band, as I really didn't want to go out and buy her stuff...

An album of new original material would sell FAR better then those 2 albums. As great as they are, they're still basically re-issues of mostly previously avaliable material (apart from Crash and Circle Dance.

Trouble In Shangri La sold pretty well and got great revues.

I'm sure they will eventually come out with a "Complete Studio Recordings" type of package one of these days like they did for Led Zepplin and ABBA. I was incredibly impressed with the ABBA set. Each album was remastered with coinciding b-sides and bonus material included. And there was an additional cd called "Rarities" which was a catchall for everything else. 2 dvds were also included. One contained every official video and the other had a short documentary and some concert footage. Unfortunately we may have to wait until after Stevie has passed away before she receives that kind of treatment. Or maybe if she would rightfully be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist. (Something else that is WAAAAYYYY overdue.)

I would love it if Bella Donna was released as some type of boxed set that included the remastered album, an outtakes CD, and the White Winged Dove tour on DVD, and also include a cool photo book from that Era...with outtakes, etc.

But, I know it will never happen.

Here's what I would include as bonus material:

Blue Lamp
Gold and Braid (Live)
Sleeping Angel
Julia (Outtake)
The Dealer (Outtake)
Gypsy (Outtake)

And then a bonus CD with lots of demos including Lady From the Mountain, All the King's Horses and piano demos of Bella Donna, Kind of Woman and Outside the Rain.

Finally, some alternate versions such as The Highwayman and How Still My Love.

And, of course, round it off with a DVD of the full HBO concert.

Question: Does anyone know if the demos for If You Were My Love and Smile at You that are in circulation are from the BD sessions or if they were recorded with FM?

Some great ideas here for a Bella Donna re-issue and yes I would buy it if it contained the material that we've heard and have grown to associate with the album over the years. The full WWD concert would also be a huge treat. Although Stevie's had a great career, such a large volume of her material never saw the light of day (except online :)) and there's so many songs that have classic written all over them. Shame they couldn't at least be cleaned up and given their due as an official release.

I would not buy a remastered/repackaged BD. It has never been an album I have liked, as a solo debut I thought its production and song choices took Stevie to low-rent territory.

Gone was the goddess with the ethereal aura. Hooking up with Heartbreakers harsh and tacky and, to my ears, totally unsuited to her voice and talent.

Maybe if the songs were all totally redone it would be more worthy of a listen.

Absolutely. But not only for the unreleased bonus tracks, all of Stevie's 80's albums are in dire need of dusting off and re-mastering. Only the hits have gotten the remastered treatment as on "Crystal Visions". I would happily buy remasters of Stevie's entire 80's catalog from Bella Donna through TOSOTM in a heartbeat!

As someone who prefers Stevie's Fleetwood Mac contributions over the solo work (at least her early Mac) that thought does provoke some reflection, but I think Bella Donna was actually a good move on Stevie's part, if only to get some of the backlog of material recorded. I liked the collaboration with the Heartbreakers and felt that it didn't take over the album's flow, although it is heard on some of the other tracks like Outside the Rain. I wouldn't have been disappointed if the solo career took a back seat after the Wild Heart and she concentrated on the group that made her a star. None of us can change history but it would have been so wonderful if Fleetwood Mac would've been able capture and expand on the direction it took with Tusk, taking some risks musically and finding their way as a collaborative team again. If they'd done that, then Mirage may have been a blockbuster and we could've seen some impressive work through the 80's, but then there were the drugs, and Rock a Little and Stevie's disastrous outing on Tango. Sigh :distress:

Yes! Her CDs need to be remastered. I can't understand why they haven't been.

I'm thinking it comes down to a cost-to-benefit ratio. Would they sell enough to pay for the cost of the remastering, production and distribution? Probably not. Even so, I don't think this is a good reason for not doing it.

What I would like to see is a remastering of her first four albums, with them being widely available in CD, vinyl and digital formats, and a bonus disc being included with the CD and digital versions.

To make the project more cost effective, a limited run (perhaps 5,000 of each album) of deluxe boxed versions could be produced at a price point of about $85-$100 each, with the remastered album, a bonus disc with demos, outtakes, alternate mixes, a one-time use code that could be redeemed online for an additional exclusive download of more bonus tracks (Depeche Mode has done this with some box sets, offering alternate mixes that are not commercially available), a book that includes lyrics, tons of photos, stories and musings from Stevie on each and every song (including bonus tracks), postcards and even a small 11x17 lithograph rolled up in the box of the cover art, or a Herbert Worthington photo from the era of the album. Again, Depeche Mode did something similar for their most recent album that is a virtual gold-mine for fans.

http://www.discogs.com/Depeche-Mode-Sounds-Of-The-Universe/release/1734706

Of course, the bonus tracks would soon be shared online - but so what? They already are, in often-poor quality.

I just worry that Stevie isn't getting any younger, and I'd much prefer to see her take advantage of her musical legacy before she dies and someone else makes a ton of cash off of her name and works.

It doesn't cost that much to remaster an album (and pressing it is dirt cheap). Especially when it's someone like Stevie Nicks, where you are guaranteed sales of at least several tens of thousands of copies. There are many many reissue labels out there that remaster and rerelease albums by artists that only have a limited audience and would sell a few thousand copies at the most.

So there is no excuse for her 80's albums not to come out as remasters! And don't forget "Mirage" and "Tango In The Night"!
