Considering the famously turbulent past and volatile chemistry of iconic rock band Fleetwood Mac, it appears that the stars, thankfully, are aligned for the group's current tour.

Drummer Mick Fleetwood says the "Unleashed" concert tour — the group's first in five years — has been blessed with a unique energy within the band and, according to him, a stronger connection with the audience than ever before.
Part of that surely has to do with the band's set list. The "Unleashed" tour is a first for Fleetwood Mac, as it isn't in support of any new album (their last, Say You Will, was released in 2003). Instead, Fleetwood, singer Stevie Nicks, guitarist Lindsey Buckingham and bassist John McVie have been turning in evenings of wall-to-wall classics ("Dreams" and "Go Your Own Way" among them, of course) along with a crop of cuts that have rarely been played live.
Good luck finding time for a bathroom break when the band plays tonight at Nashville's Sommet Center. A strikingly kind and chatty Mick Fleetwood found time to speak with us about the tour while on the road.

Your concert in Nashville is one that was added as an extension of your tour. Can we take that as a sign that the tour has gone well?

My joke with Fleetwood Mac is that it's the worst-run rock 'n' roll franchise in the business. We don't really work much, and when we do, we hope that everything's going to be in place, and the audience is going to be in place. Trusting Fleetwood Mac's perfect timing — not — we wait for 5 1/2 years and go out in a huge recession. But amazingly, it's been absolutely fantastic.
This "Unleashed" tour, as you've said, marks the first time without a new album to support.
How does that affect the band's set list?
What we did was craft a set with more space because we're not featuring four or five songs off a (new) album and shoving it down people's throats, going, "Look what we've done." In truth, artistically, you're always going to do that, but when you look at it objectively, it's a little self-serving, in a way.

We've often gotten so excited about a new album that we do too many new songs, and you go, "Well, (the audience doesn't) know the songs," and it does affect a show. This time, we haven't had that in the mix, so what we chose was to do some songs that we know that people love for sure, and then some songs like "Storms," for instance, that we've never done (live).

Audiences might be happy to hear more of your older tunes, but how does the band stay satisfied? How do you make this feel fresh for yourselves?
Well, you have to understand that we've never done this. This is actually a new system.
We're getting off on this extra (connection) that seems to exist between the band and the audience. It's really interesting. I think we're always fairly connected to our audiences, just because people inherently know too much about us, quite frankly (laughs), as people . . .
We're doing songs that we've never done or haven't done in so long, they might as well be new songs. We haven't done "Oh Well" in over 30 years, and now Lindsey's ripping "Oh Well" unbelievably[/B[B]]. Of course, me and John are like pigs in (mud) being able to play one of the old songs that came from the Peter Green era of Fleetwood Mac.

Numerous reviews of recent shows are complimentary of the band's energy on stage — physical and otherwise. Have you noticed this energy yourself?

There is a really vibrant vibe on stage. You can't bottle it. It either happens or it doesn't. . . . Our live performance has always been really different on stage to the crafting of our albums. I think that's interesting to an audience. There are bands out there where you go, "Yeah, (the concert) was great, but it was just like putting the album on." It was so unbelievably cool, or delivered in such a metered way that it didn't come to life.

We're on the edge, or I certainly am on the edge of (messing) a drum fill up (laughs), but you get this weird tension that has a charm to it, and I think that works for us.
You mentioned touring in a recession earlier — did this make anyone in the band nervous when plotting the tour?

I don't think anyone was majorly (apprehensive). I probably think about that stuff more than anyone else in the band because I'm a news freak, a conspiracy theorist and God knows what else. So I'm going, "Oh my God, this is so not the right time to be doing this, but we're doing it."
It wasn't very long-lit, but it did cross my mind, and I think it crossed everybody's mind. All we had to reach on was, "Remember, in the Great Depression, the movie business did really well."

Stevie, pretty much every night — and she means it — says, "I am so overjoyed that you chose us to come and see." We've had a great run and it has always been good. People seem to be going away really happy, and when we do this, that's what we want to hear.

The show last night was an amazing experience! Lindsey was absolutely on fire - no big surprise there. Stevie was also great, although it was difficult for me to hear her vocals as I was at Lindsey's mic the entire night. Stevie smiled a lot and moved around a great deal. The show moved so quickly, and this was my first Mac show at the stage, so it's hard to give an ample review. However, I will point out that the highlights for Stevie of course, were "Rhiannon", "Gold Dust Woman", "Stand Back". She gave these songs her all and it really showed. I am in love with the new vibe they are giving "Gold Dust Woman" - between Stevie's dramatic swaying and ad-libbing, in keeping with Lindsey's wonky guitar riffs; new life is breathed into this Mac standard.

Lindsey laughed at the end of "Say You Love Me", a shared joke with Stevie it seemed. Stevie gave him a little back scratch during their "Sara" hug which is more center stage since she doesn't go to his mic to sing the last line. "Landslide" was dedicated to Michelle Branch. Lindsey dedicated "Big Love" to all the acoustic musicians in Nashville who were the founders of the music (paraphrase). The gathering of John, Stevie and Lindsey around Mick's drum kit for "World Turning" is a very poignant and appropriate sight.

"Silver Springs" was the last encore, but Stevie literally grabbed her throat at the ending line and Lindsey looked at her with great concern. She managed to drop "blue green colors flashing" to a lower key for a nice, smooth save, but I would bet money that they won't attempt this song in New Orleans, or maybe even the make up dates in Canada.

Someone gave Stevie a bouquet of white roses, which Lindsey took and handed to her at the end. She gave them to Mick to hold while the closing remarks were made. She told the audience that she never thought in her wildest dreams she would ever be singing on a stage in Nashville and that it was proof that dreams really do come true. Mick, while holding the roses, said he felt like he was "on Broadway"...which gave Stevie a great laugh - and the most genuine laugh and smile from her of the night. (By the way, Mick, you were on Broadway...) :)

There were many limos and tour buses outside the venue and I'm sure several famous friends/fans were at the show, but I personally didn't spot any.

Overall, Nashville was an audience who proved their love for the Mac - an amazing crowd who showed their love fully and all four members seemed very appreciative of the response.

Other observations:

*Stevie did a small kick at the end of "I Know I'm Not Wrong"
*Lindsey made several kicking movements at her during "Gold Dust Woman" as she points at him and they sing the last "do you know how to pick up the pieces and go home"
*Stevie wore fingerless silver fish net gloves at some point
*Lindsey wasn't wearing his necklace
*Stevie wore the half boots for a few songs, the tennis shoes for the most part, but it allowed her the mobility to twirl a lot during "Gypsy" and "Stand Back"
*Stevie doesn't like the introduction, Mick pointed out and she did sort of motion him to hurry it along, and he did immediately proceed to introduce her as their "first lady, Stephanie Nicks". Then, he said John liked this part even less than Stevie.
**Lindsey tried to get Stevie to do the fake ice skating as they came back out, and she played along briefly, very briefly.
*Stevie nodded at Lindsey quickly as he kissed her hand for the last encore ("let's get this over with ...?")
*John and Stevie appeared to have a little trouble with their ending bows
*It was over too quick.

Lindsey should get her to take care of his nose itch while she is there. After all, his hands are full.

I like the little kicks he does for Gold Dust Woman. It's like he's spurring Stevie on towards her big yell.

The gathering of John, Stevie and Lindsey around Mick's drum kit for "World Turning" is a very poignant and appropriate sight.

Yes, I like that ending better than the song actually. I like the way they come out too. Lindsey from one direction and John and Stevie from the other side of the stage. It's like a slow swarm.

"Silver Springs" was the last encore, but Stevie literally grabbed her throat at the ending line and Lindsey looked at her with great concern.

Whoa!

I know they'll be sad not to get SS in New Orleans and Canada, but she really did give it her best. It's not like the SYW tour where it went out and stayed out.

I'm sorry I'm not seeing them again. I hope to catch the last leg, but am already regretting my decision to bypass New Orleans since it would no longer be the "last" show. Thanks for the great review.

I was there, but I didn't post where I was going to sit before the show. Because, I was at my mom's for several days before the show, and she doesn't have a computer....lol. Anyway, my seats were Sec. 2 Row 1, seats 9 and 10, but I stood in front of the stage just to the right of Stevie.

I was just to the left of stevie, probably very close to you. It was great, and I picked stevie's side, but wish I had picked Lindsey's. My brother in law and I both played the guitar, which was fun to do again. The show was great! And Nashville was loads of fun!!

I did think about you saying you had front row b/c when we got there they said first 15 rows could go to the stage. I would be mad if I bought front row and didn't make it to the front, so I am glad you did.

LOL! That would be mighty nice of her...

Agreed...the only thing that makes it better is when she's flinging her arm out with her point. Last night it was not so flingy as a subtle move.

That's too bad Michele. I would have loved to read a NO review from you.

Another tidbit I remembered: During Stevie's Gypsy story, when she was describing the Fritz call and asked what kind of band is it and they said a hardcore rocking San Fran band, Stevie bowed down a la "I'm not worthy" before saying "oh yeah I can do that!" Very cute and funny....

I was there and OMG I thought they were AMAZING!!! I was right at the stage on Stevie's side all night. Lindsey came over and played his guitar and let us grab onto his leg, boots and play on the guitar it a bit. It was sooooo exciting!! I got that side to be closer to Stevie but Lindsey was all over it too and just letting us go crazy` :blob1: Very cool

I tried and tried yelling to Stevie but she is a hard one to get attention from. Another girl beside me (maybe a ledgie on here?) had a shaw to give her and I had a white wing dove peace sign braclet to give.. but she finally winked and motioned to lay the scarff down and she'd mouthed the words "I'll get it later" or something like that. So we tossed our stuff on stage. A crew member came out and got them. I hope they really do give it to her. My thoat is still sore from screaming! lol

I have 4 videos I am going to post on utube (Storms, Sara, a part of GYOW, Gypsy, some of SYLM and SS) I will let you know when they are up. And I got lots of pics.. most... came out blurry. With all the crowd and Stevie and Lindsey moving so much it was hard to get a good one. But I managed to get alot that I like. I will be posting them on my photobucket and I will give the link when I get that done as well.

I thought the whole evening was AWESOME!! They really rocked out. Stevie looked beautiful and enchanting... Lindsey was hotttt and hyper as all get out! John was John as usual. And Mick banged on the drums like no tomorrow.
I too noticed on Silver Springs Stevie's voice cracked a bit and she grabbed her throat ... poor gal I am sure it's rough on her.:(

Anyway I am so glad I got this experience! ( I went in May and I had lower level seats this was so much better!) I was really really wanting to hear SS too. So that made my night. :D I've never been so close before.. it rocked. It was great to see my favorite band up close!! (aside from Stevie solo of course)
It was an experience I will NEVER forget!!

Boy, that's the truth. I tried when she came over while Mick was saying goodnight and that woman just barely looked my way... :(

Bella Donna, those are some great photos, especially of Mick and Stevie back to back. The vamp look on Stevie's face is priceless.

Also, when she is looking at John with her hair tossed over one eye -- that's brilliant too.

Lindsey, mouth open, holding her by one gloved hand. Doesn't get any better.

Thanks for posting.

We were on Lindsey's side at the stage. We were sent back to our seats about 5 minutes before the show started by a crew member who checked tickets. Two minutes after we sat back down, another crew member came over and asked us if we wanted to go up to the stage and stand. So we went back up there. Freaking awesome!

Some things I noted:

While Stand Back was good, both Brett and Stevie messed up on it.
John makes the best faces. Like my friend said, it's almost like he forgets he's in a rock band. lol

Glad you all had a great time!! Sounds like you all had one, that's for sure!

Interesting how the first 15 rows could go up. If I had known that- my mom and I might have potentially gone and just stood by Stevie the whole night! Oh well!!! Live and learn!

Future reference- Sommett Center allows first 15 rows!:)

Rock on gold dust woman! (And the rest of you!)

As you know, "Kev" (that's ME) and friend Scott were front row center Friday night at Nashville's Sommet Center for Fleetwood Mac's "Unleashed" tour!

The show was, in a word, FUN! Before the concert even started, Lindsey Buckingham slapped my hand from my place at the stage, which was, again...front row center. At the end of the show, Lindsey gave me his guitar pick (which I lost that night at a Nashville dance club, "Play," BUT don't fret... I found it! Let's just say it wasn't my first time crawling around the floor in a bar).

Sheryl Crow and Michelle Branch were in the audience and Carrie Underwood was spotted on the corner (where you see Scottie standing above) although I did not get a picture of her (or myself for that matter... which is unfortunate since I looked super cute in my Ben Sherman jeans, Calvin Klein tee and black pumas - the outfit was comfortable, age appropriate and cute - a win-win I think. I never take pictures at concerts though because I don't want to be bothered with a camera and prefer to enjoy experiencing the show over worrying about pictures.)

I have been to many, many, many concerts in my time (it's what I "do") and I will tell you... Scott was the BEST concert date, EVER! He has been to other shows with me, so he "gets" I am a little Type A about getting to my spot at the stage in time. He made certain we were where we needed to be on time. Yes, he poked fun at Stevie's "wiccan ways" and he sang like a goat a little bit (which is his interpretation of her) but he knew every word to every song. He is insane. It was almost as fun watching Scott as it was watching the show.

I thought Sheryl would be there since her farm is just "down the road" in College Grove. I actually thought Stevie would mention her for the Landslide dedication but if she did I honestly do not know. I had to ask my friend who she dedicated it to. For whatever reason, I could not hear Stevie that well. Isn't Michelle Branch in The Wreckers? Who knows - maybe a little tension there still with LB and Sheryl and Stevie didn't want to stir the pot any... just speculation...

Oddly enough, that's the second time that I'd been in the Sommet Center with Sheryl and Michelle that week. Both were at the CMT Music Awards. (Which was weird because Sheryl was with Kid Rock and Michelle really doesn't have a reason to be there.)

Michelle *was* in the Wreckers... They aren't together anymore and the other girl (Jessica Harp) is doing the solo thing right now.

Rumor has it, they're together. (Crow and Rock) Don't hold me to that. It's just what I heard...

I saw Jessica Harp perform at CMA Fest. Partly out of curiosity and partly because we do promotion for her video at my work. Can't say I was impressed. She even sang "Leave the Pieces".

Glad you all had a great time!! Sounds like you all had one, that's for sure!

Interesting how the first 15 rows could go up. If I had known that- my mom and I might have potentially gone and just stood by Stevie the whole night! Oh well!!! Live and learn!

Future reference- Sommett Center allows first 15 rows!:)

they told us it was the band's private security allowing and encouraging it.

I took my mom to the show for Mother's Day. I purchased front row seats, but that was a totally waste. :distress: All that money for nothing.
This is the first time they actually let people who weren't on the front row up at the stage. Otherwise, I wouldn't have paid front row prices, but I'm glad for you guys who got to get closer though.

Oh Well (lol), we got there in time to stand a little right of Stevie on Lindsey's side just behind a very short older lady. Therefore, we were technically front row....lol. So, we were able to see, and I was able to talk back and forth with Lindsey, since the top of her head was even with the stage (I'm tall). My mom had never seen them live, so she was extremely excited.

The show was really great! Lindsey was friendly as always. Talked to the crowd, let us play his guitar, etc. I love the fact that he seems to remember people. He seemed to remember me and some others close to me......he said some things to us.....such as "Hey, baby," etc. which I thought was cute. Stevie looked beautiful. She had many costume changes as you can see from the pictures people have posted. I thought that was great. She still seems to be recovering from her illness a few weeks back. As others have mentioned, she was holding her throat on "Silver Springs" at the end. She still sounded amazing to me. Lindsey sounded great and had his usual endless energy.

I really like the fast, original "Go Insane" version this tour. "Storms" was really beautiful. I was glad to be able to hear that live. I didn't know how this greatest hits tour might go, but I'm really glad I went. I got to hear songs I love that they probably would never play again on other tours. It was well worth it.:D

I don't mean to be rude, but I thought it was common knowledge that they've been doing that since the SYW tour began in 2003. I hope you didn't pay ridiculous scalper prices for those seats, but it sounds like you and your mom still had fun.

I meant that was the first time at the Sommet Center that they have allowed people to come down front unless you were on the front. I don't remember them allowing it for the Nashville show on the SYW tour either. I purchased front row for that as well, and I got there earlier that time. Therefore, maybe, I didn't notice. I have read on here that they had allowed people to come down front for other shows this tour, but I figured it was a venue to venue decision. I didn't think from my experiences at the Sommet Center before, that would be the case. Anyway, it worked out.

the venue guys said the band's private security would be recruiting the first 15 rows to the front. I had row 3 and asked if I could go ahead up before that started, and he said Yes, they will tell you if the answer is otherwise. Other than checking our tix, that was all they did.

Fleetwood Mac at Sommet Center 6/19/09 By The Spin, Nashville Scene

http://blogs.nashvillescene.com/nashvillecream/2009/06/fleetwood_mac_at_somm.php

If someone had told us when we were 15 that we'd: a) be going to see Fleetwood Mac--a band who was adult contemporary and soft even when they rocked--voluntarily; and b) be pretty excited about it--we'd have probably laughed. We'd love nothing more than to report that band--with all members hovering between the ages of 59 and 63--blew us away, sounded phenomenal and rocked with a burning passion that flew in the face of their age. But the show sounded old, tired and phoned-in. We were bummed.

Fleetwood Mac are one of those bands that for many of our generation elicit memories of excruciatingly long car rides to which they were the soundtrack. However, the undeniable quality of the songwriting on the band's three seminal records Fleetwood Mac, Rumors and Tusk inevitably led us to grow up and appreciate how great they are. The Sommet Center show made us feel like we were 15 again, bored and squirming in our seats.

We knew we were in trouble from the start, when not a single person around us stood for the opening song, "Monday Morning." Given the demographic of the audience--just think Belle Meade Country Club--we were expecting a tame crowd with a proclivity towards sitting. But we at least expected that all would rise for the opening song.

Next up was "The Chain." **** yeah! Or so we thought. Midway through the Rumors anthem we found ourselves bored. This became the case with many of the hits--which the band's set was chock full of, this being a "greatest hits" tour and all. From "Dreams" to "Rhiannon," "Gold Dust Woman" to "Tusk," nearly every one one of the band's indelible classics in what Stevie Nicks called their "myriad of treasure trove songs" underwhelmed, lacking the potency of their original recordings. "Tusk" was going fine until the whole USC marching band section was piped in by either a sequencer or a synthesizer, making it seem instantly cheesy. Where are Heypenny when you need 'em?

The biggest problem was Stevie Nicks. Her voice sounded fatigued, pitchy and at some points just plain bad. Most of the songs were dropped down a key or two and she would still take many of the lower harmonies, which contributed to the songs' losing a lot of their power. Couple this with her uncomfortable "mystic" fabric twirling and you have a performance that bordered on goat-like parody throughout the duration of the show. She seems like a real nice lady and all, it's just that people are paying upwards of $150 a ticket for this show and, frankly, deserved better for that price.

Lindsay Buckingham, on the other hand, was mostly great. His voice, by and large, has held up, and he had more than his share of blistering guitar solos. His talents were not enough to save the show however, and he too has a presence that borders on parody, fawning over himself and playing up the whole star-crossed lovers schtick in a way that makes him come off as weirdly self-absorbed. Even for a rock star.

Unfortunately Christine McVie, having retired from touring, was absent from the proceedings and the version of "Say You Love Me" they played made us long for her presence. Her ex-husband, bassist John McVie held down a solid groove--no complaints about him--while Mick Fleetwood was mostly awesome, both as a hammy performer and as player. His greatest transgression was a drum solo during the encore that sounded frighteningly similar to Iron Butterfly's "Inagaddadivida."

The night wasn't without at least a few moments, as songs like "Second Hand News," "Go Your Own Way" and especially "Landslide" still retained some of their power. But the show never really got to the point of kicking ass. Waiting for those few and far between moments kept us there for the entire two-and-a-half hours, but, unsatisfied at show's end, we headed over to the Features show at Mercy Lounge for something that rocks!

Yeah, idk. I couldn't hear her very well. Someone else said she messed up Stand Back too - I was just pointing out her new lyric change on it. Also, on Sara she's started singing "all I ever wanted was to know you were dreaming" with the beat near the end before "and the wind became so crazy"...subtle but nice...

She's been doing that for a bit now, right? I think at least since at least the soundstage show. She sang the all I ever wanted line even back on the SYW tour - maybe not in the same place though.

(This lady has some nice photos of the concert posted in her blog)

We spent an amazing weekend in Nashville! I'm exhausted and happy happy happy!

We left Friday afternoon and drove up... checked into our hotel and got ready for an amazing night. Steffie and I got all dressed up in our "Stevie clothes" ..... devoted Stevie Nicks fans that we are... we just can't go see Stevie without dressing for it! Steffie looked so cute in her lil Stevie clothes. She was sooo excited to be going to see Stevie Nicks.... who she was named after.

The whole weekend went amazingly smoothe... we met up with our friends Cindy and Tim and drove to the show.... went right in and got our tickets from will call.... no problem getting Steffie in..... we were worried that we would have to dish out another $50+ bucks for a nosebleed ticket for
her.... but they let her right in.

We never even saw our seats which were supposed to be on the 7th row.... we walked down the stairs and right past the row our seats were on.... and staight up to the front of the stage where we stayed all night! Steffie loved it!.... I loved it!.... we had an amazing night!Fleetwood Mac rocked Nashville! The show was just awesome! I danced.... and cried.... and sang... and laughed the whole night. Stevie sang my favorite songs.... Sara and Rhiannon.... my two all time favorite songs which my oldest daughter is named after.... lil Steffie is named after Stevie herself. Gypsy.... which always makes me cry.... it reminds me of my aunt who died when she was 12 and I was 11 (we were like sisters). Silver Springs.... a beautiful and heartwrenching song.... and even a favorite that they have never performed live before this tour.... Storms. During Rhiannon Stevie soooo went into her own lil world.... doing her spins and wailing.... just like back in the day.... like I haven't seen her do in years.... she was just soooo beautiful!

This night will go into my lil memory file of the best nights in my life.... right behind the last time I spent the night at Stevie's feet in Charlotte NC back in 2001. I never in my wildest dreams thought either of these nights would truely happen for me. And at this point I soooo needed this very special night... after our year from hell... and the several more preceding it that weren't so great either. Even 2 months ago I would not have dared to even think about seeing Stevie live again.... and especially not about being right up front close to her. It was just something I would not let myself think about because it would make me so depressed to know I was missing Stevie and Fleetwood Mac yet again.

I've been a Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac fan for 30 years.... since I was 15 years old. Their music has been there for me to get me through all the tough times... the heartbreak of the teenage years.... many years in an abusive marriage... my escape from that prison.... and I finally found my wonderful husband who is also a Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac fan. I've named my children after Stevie and my favorite songs.... celebrated with their music.... and cried my eyes out from a broken heart with their music.... they have been their with their music through it all...
In Stevie's words from Storms.... "never have a been a blue calm sea.... I have always... been a storm...."

Lil Stephanie Lynn.... rockin it out with Stephanie Lynn Nicks! We did everything.... short of actually putting her up on stage.... to get Stevie to see her. When Stevie says she can't see.... she really means it! LOL Hopefully she got the photo of Steffie that I sent backstage for her : )

Rock On Gold Dust Woman!.... until next time... "when I see you again".... your music will always be in my wild lil heart.....
