Hello fellow Ledgies! I was wondering if anyone might have heard about plans of Fleetwood Mac remastering Mirage and Tango in the Night... I'm aware that Rumours is being re-released again in September, but I'm not aware of any plans for the other ablums of 1975-87. (Just curious is all...) :)

Unfortunately there are no plans that we know of yet. This current tour would have been a perfect excuse to release remasters of those two albums but instead we are getting yet another Rumours.

I would love both of these albums to get the treatment they deserve! Unfortunately Tango In The Night seems to be forgotten since Christine left. Apart from Big Love it gets no recognition at all. It's a real shame because there are some amazing songs on it. The title track, Caroline, Seven Wonders (amazing)....

I totally agree....it is a missed opportunity....They can release so much 'stuff' (same for Stevie solo stuff too) heck even there own videos too would be nice to have....but like someone said another Rumours thing......I guess we'll have to see what that's gonna be too? If it still gets released...since they keep pushing it back all the time.....Time will tell....I love Mirage better than Tango......they could also re-issue Mask.....but I know it wasn't a big seller back in the day......its ok......:nod::D
They could also remaster the "Live" lp with extras too.....LOL like thats gonna happen right.......

The fact that TITN was so big in the UK/Ireland and Europe must surely make it worthy of a rerelease. I've seen bands that have albums that haven't even gone anywhere near to gold remaster albums from the 80's (Pentagram did it and they sell hardly anything). Fleetwood Mac are missing an opportunity by not doing it.

I doubt if it is ever gonna happen anymore love both albums. I grew up with Tango even before i had heard any of the others and Tusk and Mirage grew on me (love both now) anyway the thing is (atleast over here, the cd business is failing (only last month another one here in town was closed and replaced by a game media store), and the cd's you do find are mostly greatest hits. I really noticed this when i became a big (Mama) Cass Elliot fan early this year (after being a casual one before). Some of her stuff has never even been released to cd to begin with (thank god for vinylrips) and all you can get in stores are best of's, heck we are all even still waiting for an oficial Buckingham/Nicks.
Don't get me wrong i'd love to get remastered tango and mirage, i just 'don't see it happening (atleast not on a large scale)
lets hope though! These are masterpieces !! They can even put some of those nice b-sides and 12" versions "h,h,h ,h,h, house on that hill, house up on that hill yeah" ;-)

It will probably always be my favourite album cos it was the first Fleetwood Mac album I heard and then subsequently owned. I have two vinyl copies (one for every day and one for special occasions:laugh:) and they sound really good even now. I agree that the cd sounds pretty ****.

Item about Woodpigeon which performed at North by Northwest

http://www.cbc.ca/arts/media/blogs/popculture/2009/06/nxne_2009_woodpigeons_galaxie.html

The group drew roaring applause for a punchy, electric-guitar-tweaked version of The Alison Yip School For Girls (off debut album Songbook), a song Hamilton described as "our answer to [Fleetwood Mac's] Tango In The Night," but the highlight of their set was a stellar reworking of And As The Ship Went Down, You'd Never Looked Finer, off the forthcoming Die Stadt Muzikanten.

Agreed, when it's good it's GREAT: Hold Me, Only Over You, Gypsy, Straight Back, Eyes Of The World. The rest of it just sounds like filler to me though. I'm just not nuts about the retro 50s theme going on either, ala Love In Store, Oh Diane, etc.

To me, the album just reeks of a pendulum swing following Tusk... it's so conservative, accessible, pop friendly, and almost dumbed down. I must admit though, on the rare occasion I put on Mirage, I always find it a very light and refreshing listen.

Mirage is tied with Tusk as far as being my favorite FM album.
Christine was genius on Mirage...some of my favorite songs of hers come from that album.
I love Hold Me, but I am most addicted to Wish You Were Here & Only Over You! lol
it also has three of my most fav Stevie songs.
and all Lindsey's songs are great (fav is Empire State)

Interesting point David. The good stuff - Hold Me, Straight Back, Gypsy & Eyes of the World is as good as their best work but it is probably the album with their worst material too. I could never understand how Christine contributed Love in Store & Hold Me and then two of the worst tracks imo in Only over You and Wish you were Here. Her work on Tusk had been great and she excelled herself on TITN with the best tracks but those two Mirage songs were really poor by her standards (IMO). The poster above liked them though, so who knows really!

I definitely agree that Christine's Tusk songs were just outstanding. Every single one was worth it's weight in gold, every single one had it's own aura, and was completely different. You had poppy with Think About Me, sultry with Brown Eyes (something we've never really seen before or since with Chris), mellowest of the Mac mellow with Never Make Me Cry, etc.

Unlike some other folks, I adore Only Over You, and Wish You Were Here. I think they're great. I especially think Only Over You is cool... the way that it begins with NO instrumentation, right in the middle of the chorus... pretty neat. Almost groundbreaking for Christine. Love her voice on that one too.

I know this won't be popular, but I think That's Alright is filler fluff. I know it's a much adored Stevie song, but I think it's horribly cliche and unimaginative. Other fluff: Love In Store, Oh Diane, Can't Go Back, Book Of Love, and Empire State. This is Lindsey's weakest Mac material by far, it's almost like he was protesting the backlash from Tusk, and just released the most bland, pedestrian crap he could roll out. Which is totally at odd with how creatively on fire he was during this time. I hate he felt it had to be all his way or nothing as far as creativity within the Mac after Tusk. I guess he felt he should reserve his best material for his solo albums in that era. But at least he came back strong with Tango I suppose  .

I think Tango is Christine's strongest set of songs. At times I almost feel like Christine held that record together in a way. Stevie is basically non-existent on that album, with the exception of Seven Wonders. Lindsey has some good songs, but he was pretty much out the door and he knew it. Christine delivered big time with Everywhere, Little Lies, Mystified, and Isn't It Midnight (one of my favorite FM tracks ever). I think it is very clear that with her solo album in 1984 and then Tango, Christine was on a tear songwriting-wise.

The songs I really like on Mirage, I really like. The ones I don't, I really don't. Same kind of goes for Tango too, actually. I like Mirage better as a whole, but there are a few songs on there that I can't stand (That's Alright, Oh Diane) and a few that I consider favorites (Eyes of the World, Can't Go Back, Gypsy). I don't think it's Christine's strongest work, but I like every song of hers on the album, most being "Love in Store". I love the demos floating around from this period and would love a few more of those. What is most fun to me about this period is how everyone was branching off into their solo lands and you can start to hear it. There's that one demo of "Eyes of the World" where Stevie is singing "Enchanted" over it at the end, this is around when the demo of "Can't Go Back" bred "Wild Heart", etc. I love that kind of stuff and would love to hear more of the stuff that was floating around the studio at this time.

I'm not as interested in a Tango reissue, though I'd buy it if it existed. It's my least favorite Rumours era album, but like Mirage, there are some songs I love and some songs I can't stand, just less in the middle. I am one of what seems like the very few who loves Stevie's tracks on Tango more than anything, love the Chris/Lindsey collaborations but can do without about half that album, truth be told.

I've never really thought of it that way, but you're totally right. Christine pulled everything together and shined everything to such a glossy pop luster that it covered up the albums other flaws. But honestly, I still think Tango is the quintessential textbook 80s pop album. I don't know that I'd change a thing about it, even if it has a couple of little flaws. It's really great music that was made out of turmoil and trauma, much like Rumours. I'd definitely enjoy a remaster of this one, more than any of the other Mac/solo albums. I think more than any other album, Tango just makes you smile. When it's over, you just can't be in a bad mood. And THAT says more about it than any words could!

No it is fine - I'm happy to answer. I agree it is good that we have different tastes.

Generally I really like the melody in Christine's songs. Whether slow or fast there is usually something that hooks me into the song pretty quickly. With Only Over You, I just can't get into the song - the melody never develops and the piano playing sounds heavy handed to me. With Wish You Were here, I'm not keen on the lyrics to the verses. The bit from 'There's distance between us..........thro to.......no peace inside'.....is really nice and I get what she's saying. The rest of that verse is like a demo set of lyrics I think. It feels to me like four lines that rhyme but it doesn't develop the mood she created in the first bit of the verse. She then repeats those lines a couple of times and I tend to switch off.

Just personal taste I guess:). Love in store and Hold me, I can listen to those all day long.

Love In Store- Can't Go Back - Book Of Love - Empire State -Gypsy - Eyes Of The World - Wish You Were Here-That's Alright are all fab.
The only junk on it are Oh Diane, Straight Back and Only Over You.

And when do we learn NOT to rip apart a bandalbum by comparing contributions of each member? It's Fleetwood Mac. They all agreed on the contributions of eachother!

Mirage was the last FM album I listened to on vinyl and I always remember being absolutely mesmerized by Christine's last 2 closing songs on each side of the album. I don't know if I'd have liked them as much on their own, just presented as a single or something, but the way they came in and brought things to an ending like that was really mood-stirring. Almost like subliminal stimulation.

And the little rise in intensity, as her voice gets more urgent and a bit hurried at the last, "caa-ant get you out of my mind. As I lay here in the darkness, I can't find no peace inside . . . " It makes my pulse quicken.

I didn't discover FM until after Tusk was released, so Mirage was the first of the band's albums that I anticipated. I would stalk the library looking for news of it in magazines (because I didn't have a subscription to them) and I'd go to the campus record stores and look at the "Upcoming Releases" list. I was so excited about it. I really have no objectivity regarding Mirage.

I can't stand Tango in The Night. It's Big Love, Everywhere, the titletrack and the rest is simply garbage bubblegum nothing with an incredible smart and visionary productionsauce. Isn't it midnight is Ok. The acoustic guitarsolo in Family Man is. But overall it's grilled air. And that album ruined all the reasons why I loved this band: because of the fact that there was a lot more depth in their music than only radiofriendliness. And Then there was the track that underlined ALL the preoccupations that sceptic people had, and I fought like a lion all these years playing people Fireflies, Sisters Of The Moon, World Turning, I'm So Afraid, Eyes Of The World, Why, Brown Eyes, Not That Funny, Think About Me, That's Enough For Me, but I didn't have anything left as a defense if they said: They suck bigtime, boy, they released Little Lies.

:laugh:I know what you mean about that last part. And don't get me wrong. I like Little Lies. It falls into an ironic pattern she has that I savor. I think there's steel and darkness underneath that sugar and I very much appreciate it. I have since SYLM. BUT. I think Little Lies and Don't Stop give FM the unjust reputation that they have. FM is not Neil Sedaka, but people who think they are, think so because of those 2 songs. I mean, the singlehanded power of Little Lies to define the band forever, to condemn its entire repertoire to Captain and Tennille status -- that's somewhat remarkable. Little Lies is kind of a symbol of everything that people ridicule.

Well you pronounce it a lot better than I do as a nonnative speaker, but I think the song stinks for basicly THAT fact. I like Everywhere, though, because it's breezy and playful- very original and quite unusual in that matter.

And Don't Stop is simply a too good song: it's butchered and killed by the clintoncampagne: it has a wrong context-association now. But Back in 77? The song brought down the house on all continents, and was NOT considered as emptyheaded pop.

Let's put it this way. I was five when Little Lies came out. I remember seeing that music video either around then or when I was a little older. When The Dance came out when I was in high school, I was shocked at how much enjoyed it because I thought I didn't like Fleetwood Mac, based on that song and video from when I was in KINDERGARTEN.

That said, I like it more now and I actually have converted quite a few people with that song. I just think it's funny that I had a pre-conceived notion of the band because of that song at such a young age!

You're right, it's definately not the masterpiece that Tusk is.
Mirage and Tango were big let downs critically speaking. A
little too commercial, sugary sweet, pop tunes.

I'm sure Lindsey enjoyed cashing the checks from these releases,
but as an artist, I'd bet he was very disappointed in the direction
the band was taking. Maybe he would have stayed on for the tour
to support Tango even with all the disfunction that was going on in
the band, if he'd have been proud of the music.

I like parts of Mirage and Tango, and they need a remastering for sure.
I just wish they'd have been better albums in the first place.

I don't think it was performed on the Rumours Tour. But it was definately a hit on the Tusk Tour, especially with Christine's piano solo in the middle.

So Mirage, was the 1st Fleetwood Mac album as I started getting into them, 2 weeks later it was released, and the Mirage Live Video I went to that show, and was there one of the 2 nights they filmed that show, it was amazing! But Mirage is very special to me...I would love an extended version, if you go back to The Chain Box Set, Goodbye Angel, Teen Beat & the extended version of Gypsy are on that from these sessions....I want a remastered version damnit! Because they are all in a band. They all brought out these recordings. Not under individual names, but under a bandname. So you should ask yourself: why should anybody question they did not agree to it?

The only exception is mabe SYW: that WAS a LB soloalbum. The deal WAS that that would be the pool of songs they were going to work with. BEFORE the definate recording started.

I guess I thought that the eventual albums would always be a compromise or a legal deal like SYW rather than an agreement. I read a lot of music biographies. Clapton talks about how he could never agree with others what was going on an album. I read that Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins came to blows over one Genesis album. And then Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson reached the point that one or other had to leave Supertramp primarily over the inclusion of 'Lord is it mine' on Breakfast in America - although Rick's wife was an issue too. Pink Floyd etc....you get the point.

I may have taken your point too literally but I always thought I'd like to be a fly on the wall when Fleetwood Mac were slating tracks for an album. I thought it would be a difficult process to decide what went on the album and what didn't.

The only exception is mabe SYW: that WAS a LB soloalbum. The deal WAS that that would be the pool of songs they were going to work with. BEFORE the definate recording started.

Yes I think there was more of a legal framework around that album.

I still think that the california cocaine trilogy were all albums with all members agreeing on the content. Ofcourse there has been quarrels/fights about details, but i can't imagine that on member was against the publication of an album and despite that it could have been brought out. I meant that it was a smash-radio-HIT on all continents in 77.And there are a couple of shows we have recordings of from the beginning of the tour with Don't Stop, like Oklahoma City & Little Rock.

About the members agreeing on track lists for albums: Stevie Nicks is the only one I can remember who, in interviews over the years, ever complained about specific songs not being included on the Fleetwood Mac albums (or being neglected by the band for too many years before finally being recorded).

I remember her complaining a bit about why it took Fleetwood Mac so long to record That's Alright in her 1982 interview with Jim Ladd. In the interview, Mick said it was a great song, & Stevie said that "We always wanted to record it, but I don't know why we never did."

We all know about Silver Springs, but that was a special case pertaining to track length rather than a case of the rest of the band's deciding for some artistic reason not to include it.

Other songs she has mentioned in print or on radio, like What Has Rock & Roll Ever Done for You? or Smile at You, were described by her as having been band decisions to bypass. (For Smile at You, for example, Stevie said "It's not really where we're at" -- referring to the song's bitterness.)

I can't recall instances of any of the others complaining that any of their songs weren't recorded & released. Of course, that could all be a direct function of Stevie's relative lack of involvement & attendance during studio time.

michelej1
06-24-2009, 08:36 PM
Stevie has also complained about Lindsey's songs on Tusk, both their nature and number. She indicated that Christine was not happy either, but I highly doubt that Christine would agree entirely with Stevie's gripes.

It's fairly simple... they're not going to be remastered if they don't feel they can make any money off of them. If it does happen for Mirage and Tango, I would imagine it'd be around the time that (if) Fleetwood Mac releases a new studio album.

Obviously, the first three remasters, didn't live up to their sales expectations.

Andy Man

I think the only way we'll see remasters of those records is if Warner decides to do a huge remastering project including all of the Rumours line-up albums, sold as a package. On their own I don't think that either album would sell much, but if they were to re-master all 5 studio albums, plus live albums, I think that Warner could market that quite easily. It wouldn't be the cheapest product, but there would be more incentive for people to buy all the albums remastered at once, each with bonus material of course.

Otherwise, I doubt we'll see those albums remastered. Most people, unfortunately, don't give much thought to audio quality (or even care about it, or know what remastering is for that matter!) and are quite happy to listen to the (horrible!) mastering of the original CD releases.

Yeah, but it's a 100 times better in the demo from the mid 70s. There, her high, twangy soprano suits the song perfectly. By the time she gets to it on Mirage, she sounds tired, and the band kind of strums along listlessly.

Why the band never sought to record Planets (beyond the early Rumours outtake) is beyond me. It would have made the perfect addition to Tango. Still, the Shangri-la version is amazing.

Gosh: I just realized I've replied to something posted in 2009. I need a life.

Nice to hear of a fellow Cass Elliot fan! I'm obsessed with all things Mamas & Papas, including all of their solo work prior to the band and after. Fortunately, in the last several years much of their work, including a lot of rare/unreleased material has been released on CD. Most notable is the recent release of Cass's last two studio albums. Her daughter Owen made it happen! Yet you're not going to find those in record stores but they are easily obtained online.

Oh, I missed that bit. I think when a record label drops a back catalog, that means they will no longer distribute/press any more copies..?

A review by JPK from the Can't Explain blog, November 6, 2010:

http://pkcantexplain.blogspot.com/2010/11/mirage-1982.html

A sentimental favorite, perhaps, if only because my first assignment as a music journalist (a career more or less abandoned 15 years ago) was a review of the Twin Cities concert in 1982 in support of this album. It's clearly all a bit pro forma, harking back to the vein of the big mega-success albums of the '70s and reined in considerably from their experiments with Tusk, often characterized, fairly and otherwise, as bloated. There's a formula and they appear to be comfortable with it by this point: three songwriters, three styles, solid rhythm section. And say what you will that formula worked again, producing a double platinum album that spawned three hits, one of them (Christine McVie's "Hold Me") a #4. In spite of my misgivings about Stevie Nicks her song "Gypsy" is my favorite here (yes, title notwithstanding), even as it inscrutably name-checks the Velvet Underground (albeit lowercase, so I don't know what's going on actually, but I'll just chalk that up here and now to the typically gauzy Nicks). Lindsey Buckingham, arguably the person most responsible for Tusk, appears to be dominating still, with five of the 12 songs and his uniquely squirrelly, affecting guitar all over the place. Christine McVie comes next with four songs, and finally Nicks with three—two of the worst and the one best, which should not surprise anyone paying attention to the band and her antics. What can I say? I don't know that it was their last good album, because I had stopped paying attention by the time the next one came out five years later, but I know it's a good one. Worthy. That is, setting aside any bias I may have in favor of it. I do remember groaning when I got the assignment, followed by the pleasant surprise when I started playing this, followed by a certain defensiveness about it that I have clung to ever since. I also learned a valuable lesson about getting into a show, as my clearance was bollixed up (not unusual in these circles, believe me) and basically had to stand on a table and shout to get in, in the process missing the opener, Men at Work. The show was by the numbers, as I recall, but this album? Fine. Just fine.

I remember writing something about WB deleting some of her titles
from the active status in some thread. Just can't remember which
thread!

Most titles are dropped because of lack of sales.
Or if your lucky they're bringing out a rerelease,
perhaps remastered etc...
