View Full Version : John McVie: "Sad pile of antisocial ****"
"I guess one woman’s solid, unwavering bassist is another woman’s sad pile of antisocial ****. John McVie stepped up for 15 bars of “The Chain” and then went back to goal-sucking in a darkened nook by Mick Fleetwood’s drum kit for almost the entire night."

No kidding. Let's just say I sent her an equally nasty email. I thought she was supposed to be a music reviewer, not someone who throws insults around, trying to inflate their own little pathetic ego.
He might not be the most exciting bass player, or the most exciting anybody.
but he's a nice bloke from what little interviews I've seen, who's she calling antisocial...

Yeah. I'm not going to a FM show because I want to see him doing gymnastics - I'm there for the music, and frankly, he's a good musician.

I agree.
You never hear John say two words usually, but he really is a good bass player. Not a big character (as opposed to Mick), but nonetheless.
I think John and Mick together as a rhythm section are very underrated/undernoticed.

You don't usually hear John say much, this is true. But when he does talk, he has something worthwhile to say, and people actually listen. He's actually got a damn FUNNY sense of humor, and is without a doubt the most sane, centered, humble member of Fleetwood Mac. Just watch Destiny Rules if y'all haven't already, it's a good little glimpse into his personality, and he's anything but antisocial!

That must be the worst insult I've ever heard directed to anyone in the band. :(

It disgusts me when "reviewers" write like condescending jerks and mock, ridicule or insult just inflate their article. I guess this chick never paid much attention to FM before, or she would know the John McVie isn't the frontman of the band...he is the rythm section....it is not his job to be flamboyant or entertaining in the visual sense...so who really cares where he stands or what he does, as long as he plays great?

Don't get too riled up over this one, guys. Consider the source.

Although I might agree that he's humble enough with a wonderful sense of humor, I don't know how sane or centered he is.
But this reviewer doesn't have anything to say about his BASS PLAYING. You'd think his Chain spotlight was the only thing he performed all night. How'd he sound? You don't have to be front and center to be playing at the top of your game. What's she reviewing? His show biz personality? His charisma? She certainly isn't saying anything about what kind of bassist he is.
Of course, I think many writers just want a lot of hits and feedback. So, they say provocative things just to trigger a response. Makes their columns look popular.

It really bums me out that John doesn't smile nor show any emotion towards all the fans. In one interview John was talking about how Stevie puts all her emotion into her songs and how it takes a lot out of her and a lot out of the band...................So I just forgive him for not acknowledging all the cheers for him as maybe he just doesn't want drama in his life.
But really, It would make a huge difference to see him show a lill appreciation towards all of us whom spent the money and missed work just to see the Mac...............Not that he'd care but I am going to see FM for 2nd time and if he doesn't produce a smile or an acknowledgment then I am gonna just cross my arms when Mick introduces him. Lets face it , if the band isn't having fun than neither is the audience. John IS a member of this band!
Long story short----he is a great bass player but he is being rude.

See, I don't view it as rudeness because he's pretty much always been that way. If he had been a uber-friendly, hyper person and suddenly turned into this seemingly uncommunicative, reclusive, silent little man then it would be a different story. As is, his personality has never bothered me. I like him. He seems like he may be a tough guy to warm up to but he's probably very sweet and funny once you know him well. I think he gives back by doing such an awesome job on stage and being quite less dramatic than some other people in his band that we know well. It's a good balance. He reminds me a little of John Entwistle. I always loved him...

^^That's cool Nico.
Had you ever seen the clip where John says to Mick---If I smile at you , you'd better smile back!
jmo, but a simple smile to all of us coming with everything we got to show our appreciation for him just doesn't seem like asking too much..............
John does have a wonderful dry humor and likes his privacy but damn running in the shadows is a song not a demand for him to do it...

Considering who's be in front of him for over 40 years, and who has played along side him for over 40 years, I can't say I blame him for not being out there much. People only notice now because Christine isn't there.

One thing I noticed (in between seeing that John was coughing a lot) is that John doesn't smile at the audience, but he does applaud the audience. At the end, when the rest are at the mic saying, thank you, John is clapping for the audience. Then, he leaves really quickly to his right and the others linger a little longer and leave to the left.
He used to talk a little for song intros and such in the past. I guess the last time we've heard him was when he wished his mom could see him when they were talking before SYLM in 1997.

John's the man. I wouldn't worry about what others write about him.
So he's not Mr. Personality (I learned that in person), he's still one of
the best bass players out there. There's no Fleetwood "Mac" without
him.

I seem to recall John on some documentary about the "Tusk" album I think where he and Lindsey were talking about a song they were working on and Lindsey was trying to tell John how he wanted it. John's response was basically, "I play it how if I feel it. If you don't like it, then . . ." and Lindsey started talking over him so he really never finished the sentence.
Basically, my response to this reviewer is similar: He plays it how he feels it. If you don't like it then, . . . **** You!"
Or, as I recall reading somewhere else, perhaps Mick's autobiography, they were still with John Mayall, early on in Mick's time with Mayall, and someone in an audience yelled something negative about Mick and John's response was to go up to the mike and yell, "Why don't you just **** off and listen!!" Mick's response was "I loved John McVie from that moment." Or something similar.
Generally speaking I would just say that John kicks ass and this stupid cow can bugger off!!

I have to say that's pretty much the harshest thing I've ever read about a Mac member. It's a pretty weird to criticise a bassist for not being some bigtime showman. I mean how many bassists are there that do anything but stand in the background and provide the grooves? Not many. I think this bitch is trying to get a reaction, it's just a shame it's at the expense of pretty much the nicest member of the band.

The reviewers comments are naught but a "sad pile of antisocial ****." As others have stated, John has never been a front man. How could this "well informed" reviewer not known that?
Out of ALL the members of Fleetwood Mac, John has been the best on line communicator (well, until the past 1 1/2 years when lindseybuckingham.com was started). Some people are not naturally blabby. Anyone here expecting to see John dancing on the stage while he's playing the bass? THAT would not be McVie.
Mr. McVie's answers on the official (FM.come) site's Q&A were a lot of fun, and his Q&A here, on The Penguin, remains one of the best! Any of the other 'five fireflies' communicate here, on the longest running, OPEN & free Fleetwood Mac website? NOPE.
Further, when fans have held up signs for John, he's gone out of his way to acknowledge them and has even COLLECTEd the signs from fans!
Antisocial? I think he's one of the coolest dudes out there. John, if you happen to read the TRASH that uniformed narrowminded reviewer put up, remember the fans thinks you rock! Now and always!

I agree with this, Stevie and Lindsey are the main components of the band, and they should be. But you go and say John McVie to someone who doesnt know they band, they have no idea who he is like if you said Stevie Nicks or Lindsey Buckingham

Aw that makes me sad :distress: I really like John.
I beg to differ. At the Philly show, some woman in front of me made a special sign just for John. Towards the end of the show, the man next to her helped hold it up. First Stevie & then John spotted it; it said, "Ahoy John" or something like that. He smiled, pointed & kind of nodded. At the very end of the show, a man came out & wanted to hand that man a guitar pic that was from John for that woman. The man pointed to the woman since she actually made the sign, & the man got the guitar pic to this woman. Then she threw the sign up to the man on stage so John would get the sign. I thought it was really nice of John to acknowledge her in his own way & for her to acknowledge him in her way.
And John is the best bass player around.

This "reviewer" was merely trying to get a reaction, as her "you can voice your impotent outrage" comment at the end of her rant reveals. She has clearly never seen John play before, and certainly never HEARD how well he plays.
Calling someone a pile of **** (anti-social or otherwise) is not criticism. It's immature. Ignore her. No one of any importance will take her words seriously.

If you drew an arm with a penguin on it, John would know it reflected his tattoo.

I'm a huge and longtime fan and this is my first post. I've generally been a lurker but had to comment about this.
I just read this now and am really saddened by what that person said. We were at the Vancouver show and got to hang out down by the stage and John walked by and actually said a word or two to us as he was going backstage for a smoke :) He was lovely and funny. Even though we were RIGHT THERE no one else took the time. Sad pile of antisocial ****...um, no. I should say though that after my husband was waving his arms around and "thumbs upping" Stevie for 2 hours she gave him a wink and a thumbs up back. Pretty much the best moment of his life
We went to Tacoma the next night and are going to Edmonton on the 24th. So excited.
