Second verse, same as the first.
I think tonight’s show was just as spectacular as Anaheim’s, but then after awhile, you lose perspective. It’s all good.
At this juncture, if I had to list the highlights of the concert, I’d be naming about 7 songs (which would include, Go Insane, Say You Love Me, IKINW and Gold Dust Woman, to start). A third of the show is absolutely stellar and I’d say 60% of the remaining 66 is more than good. I like those percentages, especially since most of the songs have improved so much since the tour kicked off.
I only recently noticed one of the crew members spraying down the floor before the show. I suppose it’s some chemical that keeps them from slipping on the stage.
Stevie’s mic is not out when I arrive and I think perhaps she has fallen ill and won’t be performing tonight. I wonder how Lindsey will sound doing Rhiannon, but such desultory musings fall away when the assistant escorts the be-ribboned stand out at about 8:00 p.m.
I have little to add to the Anaheim review, but being every bit as long-winded as Lindsey I’ll note:
Before Dreams, Stevie notes that Arizona is her home and she’s thrilled to be there performing for them. In fact, although she fans her hand near her face, in a comical verklempt motion, I almost think I hear a genuine catch in her voice. But if so, it’s gone in a second as she demands, “let’s get this party started” in a playful deep voice.
As he outlines the Mac’s convoluted and complex history, Lindsey observes they are still “a work in progress.”
For the Gypsy intro, Stevie says her parents were transferred from Los Aneles to San Francisco and that’s where she met Lindsey. When she explains how she encountered him in 1965 and never saw him again for 2 years, I’m imagining that she sometimes wish he’d disappear for another 2 -- or 20 -- years sometimes.
As Gypsy ends, Stevie turns her back to the audience and freezes and Lindsey joins her in the pose, bending into her back. Actually, it’s eerily like what she and Waddy do at the end of GDW and I’d rather not be reminded of Waddy at a time like this.
After Go Insane ends, Lindsey goes to the drum kit and crouches on the floor in a near fetal position. As John gazes at him nonplused, a Toby Keith song runs through my head:
I sobered up and I got to thinking:
Girl, you ain’t much fun, since
I quit drinking.
Since John has given up liquor (assuming he has), I fear that he has lost the one layer of protection that shielded him from full knowledge of his bandmates’ utter madness.
In the Second Hand News introduction, Lindsey dedicates the song to his brother Jeff and points out if it wasn’t for the elder Buckinham, Lindsey might not be standing before us today. So, he’s the guy to blame, eh? Jeff’s musical interests sparked Lindsey’s own. I’m just wondering why Jeff is here in Arizona. Couldn’t he catch the show in Northern California like he usually does? What a slacker!
Next, it’s Stevie’s turn. She says she is dedicating Landslide to, “my Mama and to the rest of my family members who are here tonight, too numerous to name.” Hmmm, from her less than enthusiastic tone, I’m guessing she doesn’t like those other family members too much! I do think I saw Jessica in the audience. Well, it was a slight girl with blue hair anyway.
At the end of Landslide, Lindsey blows Stevie a kiss and she flutters her fingers, catching it like a butterfly.
I remember around the SYW tour, there was a guy who used to post who loved I’m So Afraid until he began to hear all the boots of it and found that Lindsey played the same song, note for note, every concert. That ruined the song’s fever for him. He couldn’t get swept away when he felt that Lindsey was just playing by the numbers. He didn’t think the song was as mechanical in previous tours as he found it to be in 2003-2004. Well, I can’t really tell about such things, but to this novice ear, ISA sounds more spontaneous this time around. Perhaps, tonight’s guitar solo was no different from last night’s but the song has definitely evolved since the beginning of the tour.
At the first show, I was surprised that The Mac had dropped their triumvirate. They liked to play 3 rocking, fast songs back to back (like Tusk, Stand Back and GYOW) and received such a rousing response when they did that Lindsey even used this tri-recipe in his solo concerts as well. Back in March, I thought they had departed from the formula, because although it has a powerful ending, I thought ISA was too long and slow to be part of a hit trio. But today I don’t think that any more. The ovation from ISA is so powerful that there is no break in momentum at all, from that song to the killers: Stand Back and GYOW. That section of the show is now a three part roller coaster ride.
I didn’t understand the alternate words to Stand Back yesterday, but I heard them tonight.
One man did not fall.
He asked me for my love.
He said, take it all.
I love that! First, I like the attitude, with which she shouts “take it all,” but I also like the contradiction in words. First he asks for her love, but then he says take it all, as if he’s the one giving, not asking. The truth is, he didn’t ask for anything, he just wanted to give too much. More than she could accept. More commitment than she could stand. I love the line.
You know the little choreographed hip movements the back up singers do throughout the show? During GYOW, Stevie joined them. She was standing in front of them, but facing the audience, dancing in rhythm with them, sway to sway. She did this for a few seconds then threw back her head and laughed. Very cute.
I noticed the close of World Turning has changed: They don’t use the recorded mix of vocals like they did before. Instead, after Mick’s solo ends, Brett is playing keyboards, Lindsey comes in from the side on guitar. John eases back onto stage and starts playing, then Stevie enters and the full song resumes. This is very much like they did it early on in the Dance tour. Very effective. But still, this song is the one low (well, slow) point in an excellent show, for me.
People in the audience were asking Lindsey for his guitar pics. He handed them out, but he was holding one in his mouth before giving it to a fan. Yuck!
For Silver Springs, I also noticed a different lyric. Stevie says “and did you say that you love her.” It is traditionally, did you say that she loves you.
I noticed that John was coughing several times throughout the show. He and Lindsey hugged during the final bows. I’ve seen them shake hands but I don’t know if I’ve seen them hugging at the end since – well since the two BTM shows.
All in all, I’d have to say that FM is as good in the desert as they were in the Sunshine State. I’ll upload pictures.

It's funny how when you pinpoint a specific moment you want to photograph, something happens at exactly that point to ruin your shot. I ended up with a bunch of pictures that took place a second before or after the moment I really wanted.

Michele, which stop in Florida did you see them?
Love the pics of Lindsey and Stevie. I wonder in those moments if they are ever thinking, what could have been as far as their relationship.
In the pic where Lindsey is kissing Stevie on the cheek, looks like she is holding some roses. Did someone from the audience give those to her?
Michele, perfect review. I felt like I was there. And your pics are absolutely amazing. I like that you kind of focus in on the interaction more so than them in front of the mics. I love both kinds of pics, but it's really great to capture a moment and know that was when such-and-such was happening. And most times, it helps you remember what song they were on.

Jeff Buckingham now lives in Arizona. Lindsey dedicated a song to him on his solo tour here in Arizona last year and talked about him moving to Arizona.

Thanks for the last two reviews Michele... Good stuff as always. And I too appreciate the finer details - that remind of things I'd forgotten... Like the fact that the floor in front of Stevie's mick was sprayed with something and her tambourine tassels... I think it's static guard or something to prevent getting a shock... And why do you think her mic comes out just before they start? Is it something they think people will jump up pre-show and start ripping of the streamers? Saw the same thing in Vancouver.

Thanks Alicia.
It's because you and Pattie always post so many great photos that I'm usually too lazy to take my own camera. I've already seen it all.
Christy, that just shows what I know. I thought CALIFORNIA was the Sunshine State. I haven't seen them in Florida.
Tusk!, I didn't know that about Jeff. I guess he's retired. There was a point in one of Lindsey's videos where Jeff spends the week with him and Lindsey if his wife minded having him gone. I thought that was sweet.
Peter, that mic is a diva. It's probably getting a massage before the show. You're right that they don't want people to pull the streamers. I see that Stanley was putting out the setlist at the last minute too. People might take those.
Nico, I was trying to get more photos when they weren't at the mic, because although it can capture an emotional song highlight, many times it's an obstruction. Of course, much of the time, the photo I was going for didn't really work out.

Yes, someone in the audience gave her a bunch of roses and then Lindsey handed them to her. He also took three smaller roses from the audience and set them on the drum kit for her. Then, at the end when they took their bows, Mick took one of the smaller set of roses from the drum kit and presented them to her with a serenading gesture. So, she was actually holding two different fans' roses at different times.

OMG, I think I would go insane if I had to endure that speech one more time...

 I can so picture the look on John's face! Priceless!
He does do some goofy sh*t, I remember at the Philly show during "Oh Well" he had his hand up during the line "Stick by me and I'll be your guiding hand" and he pretended like he was offended by his own body odor. Nice.
People in the audience were asking Lindsey for his guitar pics. He handed them out, but he was holding one in his mouth before giving it to a fan. Yuck!

Yes. Thank heaven he stopped doing that, but he still sticks his leg out and looks at it, pretends to be surprised by his own hand, looks up questioningly to "talk to God" and generally pantomines like a Robin Williams wanna be.
This time when Mick came to him with his wooden balls twirling, John made his fingers into pretend scissors and gestured to snip the balls off.

I think Lindsey's shirt really looks fantastic with some of the lighting backdrops. There's one that's the same color of the shirt, actually. When I was enjoying Sara, I thought about you. I remembered how you compared her performance of it for SYW to the Soundstage, where you thought she seemed to enjoy it. To me, she seems to be enjoying it now, not trudging through or wading a sea of bad memories. These last two nights, especially with the "I would go anywhere, anywhere, because I care . . ." It seems like a love song, rather than a lost love song the way they've been doing it. She not only seems to be singing it with energy and spirit, but commitment.

AZCentral (http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/music/articles/2009/05/25/20090525fleetwood.html)
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers in Fleetwood Mac showed Sunday night that they have emerged from a five-year performance hiatus with their musical mystery and superstar aura intact.
In a homecoming show for singer Stevie Nicks, the band served up an ambitious set of classics that ran nearly 2 1/2 hours at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale.
Its four members, augmented on their Unleashed tour by three singers and two other musicians, may be in their early '60s, but there was plenty of energy onstage from the bouncing opening chords of 1975's “Monday Morning.”
Guitarist-singer Lindsey Buckingam seemed to be the most supercharged Sunday, enthusiastically diving into the vocals of that tune, which like much of Mac's catalog, talks about the double sword of romance.
The Phoenix-born Nicks exuded a regal, dignified presence onstage, suitable for her status as one of rock's most magnetic and complex performers. But she clearly was happy to be back in Arizona, where she owned a home for 25 years.
“We have family here tonight (including her sister-in-law, Lori Nicks, on vocals). I am thrilled to be here,” Nicks said early on. “It is my home, you know.”
Nicks later dedicated a poignant version of “Landslide” to her mother, Barbara, a longtime Valley resident.
The arena crowd, a few thousand seats short of a sellout, responded to the between-song banter Nicks and Buckingham with loud love.
Though Mac is viewed as a baby-boomer act, a healthy number of teens and 20-somethings were in the Glendale crowd, perhaps drawn by the group's decision to spotlight its biggest hits on this tour.
With no new album to promote, Buckingham told the audience, “This time, we said, ‘Let's just go out there and have fun.'”
The set which included such mega-hits as “Rhiannon,” “Go Your Own Way,” “Dreams,” “Sara” and “Don't Stop,” left longtime fans like Pamela Frady, 54, of Fountain Hills satisfied.
“All the old songs were really good,” she said.
Frady's husband, David, 54, who has seen the band through the years, added, “They have done nothing but improve phenomenally.”
Buckingham remained as fiery as ever when he attacked his guitar on “Big Love” and the show-stopping “I'm So Afraid.”
He mentioned “the power and importance of change” before starting the rapid-fire plucking of his acoustic guitar on 1987's “Big Love.”
When he was done, he looked up at the crowd, smiled and touched his heart.
As 1975's “I'm So Afraid” built to a raging climax, Buckingham ran around the stage, pausing several times to pound on the fret board of his guitar, within inches of the outstretched arms of fans.
Nicks' vocals were smooth and strong on the aforementioned hits, as well as “Dreams,” “Gypsy,” “Gold Dust Woman” and the show-ending “Silver Springs.”
The keys of some songs appeared to have been lowered, and Nicks long ago altered her treatment of some lyrics to avoid high notes, but her rich voice remains of of rock's most distinctive.
Nicks, who reportedly has lost 60 pounds, looked as mystical as ever, dressed early on in a dark dress with material cascading from its sleeves and tall boots. She had some subtle costume changes during the show, including various shawls that added drama to her trademark move — extending her arms and twirling (done more slowly than in the '70s and '80s).
During the always-powerful “Gold Dust Woman,” Nicks turned her back to the crowd and stretched out her arms, silhouetted by an onstage spotlight. As the haunting song wound down, Nicks' dance moves were eerie and ghostlike, and the crowd responded with a roar.
Drummer Mick Fleetwood, who co-founded the band with bassist and fellow Brit John McVie in 1967, got into the act with a spirited drum solo during the first encore song, “World Turning.”
Wearing a microphone and looking like rock's crazy, old uncle with his gray beard and bulging eyeballs, Fleetwood cracked up the crowd with yelps and hoots.
McVie, whom Fleetwood introduced as “the backbone of Fleetwood Mac,” was his usual low-key self on stage, decked out in a cap and dark vest.
Throughout the set, Fleetwood waved his approval at Buckingham's masterful guitar work and blew kisses at Nicks.
Nicks and Buckingam, who were a couple before and during their early days in Fleetwood Mac (they joined in 1974), came out for the first encore holding hands, and Buckingham gently kissed the singer's hand.

Since she had a glove on and was amply protected, she probably decided to let him have at it:laugh:.
Your note reminded me of this dramatic X-Files episode where Mulder is sobbing at Scully's deathbed. His face is against her hand and he is crying silently, with his mouth open. Viewers declared that it looked like he was chewing and eating her arm! The idea rather diminished the scene's emotional impact. Michele

Just wanted to add to the thread. Fantastic show! I was right in front of Lindsey's mic behind the girls with the flowers for Stevie. During World Turning when Mick called for Brett to do the vocal loops he hit a key and nothing happened. He signaled for mick to keep going (moving his arm in a circular fashion). He did this about three times and continually looked behind him to see what was going on. Finally Lindsey hopped and started jamming with Mick (and from where I was you could see he looked a little concerned/puzzled). Finally the band came out and finished the song. When John came out he signaled to Lindsey with scissor hands so I think somehow the chord on the ?korg? piano got cut somewhere. Anywho made for one of the better world turning's in quite some time.

Wow. I thought that was a choice on the band's part, not an equipment malfunction. You're right that it made for a better World Turning. I did see Mick talking to Brett. He was chanting something like, "Can you keep up?" but I thought he was just referring to the piano playing and not the vocals that Brett controls. Michele

All I can say about this concert is that it was totally mindblowing. It was my first Fleetwood Mac concert and I was lucky enough to stand directly in front of the stage all night. Even though I loved all of the songs the highlights for me were Say You Love Me, Oh Well and Gold Dust Woman. I got to touch Lindsey's guitar and his leg!
It was great chatting to some nice fans and meeting our very own "Phoenix", I had so much fun. :wavey:

All I can say about this concert is that it was totally mindblowing. It was my first Fleetwood Mac concert and I was lucky enough to stand directly in front of the stage all night.
It's really great how the effect of the motion makes the color come out and red just stream through all of the photos. It gives the shots a carnivale feeling. Michele

Yes, it does arc that way.
I'm just lucky they didn't move it in time to block my shot completely, which is what usually happens. I'm looking at the stage and see a nice photo when I click and then when I look at the camera to see what I actually got, it's rubbish.

Boy did I know that feeling! I'd finally snap the shot, right at the time someone would stand up in front of me for a standing ovation! So all you would see is this woman's big blonde hair.. and NOT Stevie's..

Wow, I'm impressed and honored you thought of me! I posted that a good little while back too! And just when I thought nobody cared to hear my two cents!
I'm so glad to hear everyone had such a great concert experience, and that the band seemed to be enjoying themselves for the show! I've been kinda worried with the reports I've been reading from this tour, but these pictures in this thread alone make all that melt away!

Thanks for posting all the pictures. They are all very nice. I'm glad to see that Lindsey & Stevie are interacting a little more. Seems like now they are not so uptight, more relaxed.
