View Full Version : Oakland shines with double encore! - My review!

I just got back from my first ever FM concert, and hopefully not the last! I was blown away by a show whose energy, aura, and mystique took a little while to sink in, and when it did I was having the time of my life. I'll admit I'm a rather new FM fan (only in the past 5-6 years, and casually at best), but I love so many of their songs (and Stevie's solo work) that I had to see them live.

I thought that the show could have had greater opening energy -- then again, it could have just been the lack of enthusiasm in my particular section. No one was singing, dancing, or cheering (with the exception of a few songs), and it seemed like they were dragged out there. (Oh, I need to slap the folks sitting next to me twice -- one, for choosing their potty break during 'Storms,' and two, for commenting during 'Landslide,' "Isn't this a Dixie Chicks song?).

But all that aside, my two lovely FM posters will hang in pride, as this is probably the first show that has transported me, in my young 24 years, to the late 60s and 70s. I think it all began with Stevie introducing the history of 'Gypsy' (the highlight of my night), and I found myself in San Francisco during that golden age. On that note, the band gave lots of love to the Bay Area tonight: Stevie noted that there will never be music like the music that came out of San Francisco between 1965-1970, and later commenting that 'San Francisco knows how to rock!'; Lindsey discussed his years living in Palo Alto, and said he'd see us all here again real soon; and many of them noted that playing in the Bay Area feels like home.

So some other highlights:
-Rhiannon. This song has grown on me lately. With lighters in the air, I found myself really digging this song tonight. What a classic.
-Gold Dust Woman. Only proves Stevie is truly a queen.
-Storms. I LOVE this song. So haunting and beautiful.
-Don't Stop. Great way to end the show.
-Silver Springs. Was NOT expecting this. Is it just me, or is Oakland the first venue to get a double encore this tour? What, with reading the posts on here that this song had been absent, and with Don't Stop being the likely closer, I thought that this would not be my year to hear this song. Hell, I had my sweatshirt back on and ready to go, but figured I'd stick around, though I don't know why. But thankfully I did, and when they came back out I knew that this was my lucky night!

Other random thoughts:
-Stevie sounded great! There were some higher notes she didn't hit and went the low route, but no matter. She was wonderful.
-Lindsey: WOW can this guy play a guitar! He had the whole arena in his hands! Simply amazing -- totally worth the $25 parking fee!

Would love to hear other fans' thoughts, and if anyone could post the exact setlist and upload any songs from tonight, it would be much appreciated.

Just got back myself and there is no doubt Stevie is back and looking great. Fleetwood Mac rocked it out tonight. I will say this after having been to more Fleetwood Mac/Stevie and Lindsey solo tours this is NOT the best I have seen, however it was GREAT!! I think Mirage and Dance tours were both better however this was better that SYW. I think Christine is sorely missed...she brings a cohesiveness to the 5 and a treasure of songs not performed (i.e. Little Lies, Brown Eyes, Isn't it Midnght, Songbird, Hold Me, etc). That being said...the concert was great!!

The opening was below standard...just a walk out and into Monday Morning...B-O-R-I-N-G. No suspense nothing to really satisfy the anticipation. Other than that they really kicked it into gear quickly with the Chain.

Stevie was high energy, no droopy or 1/2 closed eyes, no limp, she was moving freely and shined on GDW, Stand Back, Rhiannon, Storms, Sara and Gypsy. Lindsey gave 110% and continues to make Rolling Stone magazine look foolish for not naming him one of the top 100 guitarists. Interesting observations that I would welcome feedback on. Stevie got more pop from the fans than Lindsey (not by much but I made it a point to compare). Second observation: Stevie was on fire tonite full of energy and smiling. I wonder if she and even Lindsey get energized when they play the Bay Area and LA? I have noticed that they always give 110% when they play those areas. Thoughts?

Props to Lindsey for doing Oh Well justice. Lindsey kicked butt on ISA and GYOW!! Mick's drum solo on World Turning was not spectacular but he makes it interesting with his energy and enthusiasm. John McVie IMO is the BEST bass player ever and he never fails to exceed expectations. Even John, who we all know is low key, seemed a little more energized tonight. I was very very happy with the energy of all 4 members of the band and the money spent was well worth it. For those who are not sure if they want to go see them...GO!!! Yes, GO YOUR OWN WAY but GO...they will not disappoint you.

It sounds like it was one awesome show, and those of you who went, I'm glad y'all had a great time. I'm going next month, and I am SO looking forward to it. I was praying for Stevie too, if indeed it was her who was not feeling well. I've been praying for safe travel for them as well. You guys who prayed.. don't stop (no pun intended, lol), 'cause prayer IS powerful. :)

I didn't know what kind of reviews I would read about Oakland, so it was wonderful to see positive ones. And Silver Springs is back! After SYW I didn't expect it to come back. I thought it was gone for good. I would have understood if it had to remain out and if it's dropped again that's fine. But I can't help but be happy that it hasn't been.

I would imagine that they are just a bit more hyped for the Bay area shows. Did they give you a little speech about their history in the area?

Overmyhead, I'm sorry that it took a little while to get into the show, but glad you did.

The_Chain, I like the way you put it in perspective. It's better than SYW if not as good as tours before that. I think that's an apt description. Nice to know that FM's "not as good" is still pretty darn GREAT.

Thanks for the reviews.

I posted last night in the Oakland 24 thread but thought I would post my thoughts on the show again.
The band was in great spirits, they really seemed to be giving it their best, and Stevie was all smiles. And in very strong voice. She broke out the red boots for a brief section in the middle when she comes back out in her red dress. It took me awhile to notice that because I was in the first section behind the floor seats and the monitors were blocking my view. It was a nice surprise that she pulled them out, even if it was only for a few songs.
The Oracle Arena was very packed. That was great to see. There were pockets of people around me standing & singing to a few songs.
Lindsey was truly more aggressive than ever. While I enjoyed the fact that he does work the crowd up, I wish he wouldnt scream out his vocals. "Big Love" was the worst, at the end. I loved his vocals on NGBA though, he proved he can sing without screeching.
Stevie really surprised me after all the low energy of several recent performances. She is obviously feeling fine now, and her enthusiasm for the Bay Area shone through. She did a kick during one of the first numbers, and did a few spins during "Stand Back". Her vocals were really strong. She didnt always go for a lower note like she usually does and held long notes during GDW and "Storms" was really wonderful last night. I hope someone caught this show for You Tube.
I plan to hit the Sacramento show when it's rescheduled. Would go to San Jose tonight, but I have to work.
Also someone mentioned in one of the early threads concerning this tour on the lighting. I loved it. It was modern. Simple but really effective.
To everyone going to the remaining shows-ENJOY! I hope they perform with the same energy & spirit they displayed last night.

Joseph

She is obviously feeling fine now I have watched varying videos (other than the above) with varying audio quality. May I ask, as you attended the performance, you did not find Stevie's voice to be strained?

I am concerned for the rest of the dates...
and am wondering if they will have further reststops between shows.

Yea I think she is STILL recovering from her illness. Her voice does sound a little funky. At least shes feeling better and rockin out. Hopefully her voice will be better soon. Plus, that person was RIGHT UP FRONT so I'm guessing that the sound is raw up there.

I really did not think her voice was strained. Again, I was happily surprised with the efforts of the entire band.
I think if her voice was really in poor shape they would not have put Silver Springs back in as the closing number. It did not seem like she was holding back. They know they have 20 more dates to go and I dont think they would risk it, but who knows?
After the Phoenix date they have 3 days off before they play Los Angeles, and that's more time off than they have been getting between shows, aside from the time they took off after postponing Calgary & Edmonton.

Yes, they truly did draw a very large crowd. I was at my seat 10 minutes before they started and people were still filing in. After the first couple of songs it was really clear they did well attendance wise.
I spotted a few young ladies wearing Lindsey Buckingham T-shirts, that was cool. And of course lots of older T-shirts people were wearing from previous tours.

Joseph is right I think Stevie was in fine form and voice. She was totally into the show and the performance. The arena was packed very close to a sell out. I was on the floor and security allowed people to go all the way to the front of the stage. Everyone sitting in the floor section stood for almost the entire show. From GDW on our entre section went crazy and from ISO on the entire arena was pretty much on their feet. You know a concert went well when you get to the end and you think "but it just started, is it over already???"

I too plan on attending Sacramento when they do the rescheduled show. For those yet to attend any show I hope you all get the same kind of energy and commtment from the band that we got in Oakland last night.

Last Night: Fleetwood Mac at the Oracle Arena
By Janine Kahn

Delving into the convoluted history of Fleetwood Mac is tantamount to stepping in a cow pile for the casual fan (and here I shall raise my hand), so let's sidestep cries of "heresy!" and stick to what went down at the Oracle last night.

When you've got a catalogue of hits like Fleetwood Mac, the quality of the show leans heavily on whether or not the band is in top form. And on this night, for most of the 20-song set, the band was tight and the vocals crisp. Father Time may have stiffened the bones of John McVie and Stevie Nicks (who headed backstage for a break and shawl swap after almost every song), but Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham had obviously been eating their spinach - these two gentlemen of Pop had far more fun than anyone in the audience. Which is no easy feat considering the crowd was on its feet for more than half of the show, tears of nostalgia wetting many an eye.

Buckingham danced around the stage like a teen guitarist at his first show, beating his chest and blowing kisses to the crowd in heartfelt thanks - all but leaping into the pit of fans below in enthusiasm. (At one point, he had at least 6 pairs of fan hands playing his guitar.) Nicks, for her part, was her gypsy self, snaking hands in the air and gently swirling beneath the spotlights as best she could -- to be honest, from where we sat, she looked as though she were almost in pain, but when she sang it was smooth and seemed effortless.

The addition of three back-up singers, a guitarist and keyboardist (who also sang harmonies) contributed to the lush sound that is the hallmark of many a Fleetwood Mac recording.

Both Nicks and Buckingham commented on how thrilled they were to be back in the Bay, where their former band Fritz opened for acts like Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin. San Francisco is the "velvet underground" mentioned in "Gypsy," added Nicks before launching into the song.

Fan favorites "Go Your Own Way," "Landslide," "Dreams," "Say You Love Me" and "Rhiannon" made appearances, as did "Storms," which Nicks said had never been performed onstage outside the current tour.

Add dueling guitar leads between veteran guitarist Neale Heywood and Buckingham and an over-the-top drum solo from Fleetwood and you've got a show that will be bragged about having been at for quite some time.

I really think the Band did a spectacular job since they have been sick. My Friend and I had the nosebleed section but we ended up in section 109 row 25. And we couldn't be happier. being able to take pics I will have to get them ready. Not sure how to post them here yet i am working on it.
The Mac Is definatley back. I thought that mick did a great job on drums and at one point during Sara Stevie gave Lindsey a hug. It was great.
And for the encore they were holding hands together.
And after the show There was only about 5 of us that stayed to see anybody and Jana was walking back in with a bag and I said hello to her and She Said Hello back and Asked How we were. She is so nice.
anyway hope to see more of you tonight we are in section 114

Thanks for this retread article from the Contra Costa Times, no doubt a thinly disguised rehash of an AP article. Meanwhile, Oakland's Oracle Arena hosted Fleetwood Mac last night, to a nearly sold-out and clearly adoring crowd. The band was in great form and rocked the house with all of their biggest hits and a couple of more obscure offerings. A terrific show by one of rock's truly iconic bands. And the Oakland Tribune didn't even mention it.

Upon closer listening, she was saying that Fritz wasn't Lindsey's band. It belonged to him and the three other guys and Lindsey had the drummer call her.

Oh and Stevie said that Lindsey "is not good at phone calls. Not then, not now."

She's a funny, talky gal.

Michele

That was too funny.

Well Stevie kicked the **** out of Stand Back. Her voice did sound strained at times but she made up for it in animation. She was nothing like that in Philly! She's doing some different moves and vocal stylings to keep the song fresh. Now if only she'd do the same with Rhiannon! :p:p

Thunder Only Happens When It's Raining

The music of mega group Fleetwood Mac has always sounded like a quiet storm to me… and not simply because of the song "Storm," the "Dreams" lyric: "Thunder only happens when it's raining" and the rain scene in the "Gypsy" video.

Between Mick Fleetwood's steady drumming, Christine McVie's precise keyboarding and Stevie Nick's haunting vocals, I just hear rain.

But I say a quiet storm because it's not a torrential downpour, it's not a day that you want to get shelter from -- unless it's to, dare I say it, "make love" on a four poster bed draped in velvet – but rather one best spent twirling around in the rain, with your inner-gypsy hanging out.

Still, there's something to the fact that just under the surface of much of this soft classic rock, there are underlying notes of the much talked-about, written-about, dwelled-upon Buckingham-Nicks break up.

True, it was the end of their relationship that provided most of the inspiration for the classic 1977 "Rumours" album as well as a third of the 23-song set of their current "Unleashed" tour which hit Oakland Arena on May 20. The band played on at HP Pavilion in San Jose on May 21.

On a sparse, black and white and red all over set (featuring little more than a handful of video screens, alternating between new visuals and timeless video clips), and bolstered by three backup singers, an added guitarist and a harmonizing keyboardist (presumably filling in for the decade-long absent Christine McVie) the quartet of singer Stevie Nicks, singer/guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie tackled three decades of greatest hits and should-have-beens.

Opening with the some might say optimistic mid-tempo number "Monday Morning," the band began drawing fans in with the haunting breakup tracks "The Chain" and "Dreams," for which Nicks danced around in her black bustier dress with flowy skirts and sequined shoulder trim [she wore a red version in the second half of the show], clutched her scarved and chained mic stand, often gripping the sparkly semiprecious strands like rosaries or shook her tambourine, trailed by multi-colored streamers, as Buckingham strummed away. Nick's trademark raspy vocals and tambourine-playing were in top form and Buckingham's guitar-playing was spot on.

After welcoming Bay Area fans, Buckingham gave the audience the blood that they demanded by addressing the band's troubles over the years: "We have a convoluted and complex emotional history, and we've been together a long time, which works in our favor," he said. "We've taken long breaks, but every time we get back together it's different, but there's always forward motion."

So while rehearsing for this greatest hits tour, without the pressure of selling a new album, the band decided to just have fun and "do the songs that we love a lot and hopefully the ones you love, too," he added.

It was clear that "the man with the magic fingers" was enjoying himself, particularly his own guitar skills mid-show, even giving himself the proverbial pat on the back for his excellent riffing on tracks like the indelible "Tusk," "Big Love" and the Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac number "Oh Well," complete with jumps that left him clutching his heart and mouthing "Yeah."

But the true magic happened when Buckingham and "our first lady" Nicks produced beautiful harmonies together on a slowed-down, country-fried version of "Gypsy," which Nicks said was about the wonderful time she and Lindsey spent in San Francisco during the 60's summers of love, on "Rhiannon," "Second Hand News," the first recorded song on the "Rumours" album, which Buckingham described as "a sad song, with some humor, optimism and a good dose of aggression," "Storms," a dark rarity about, according to Buckingham, "stormy, dark, deep, stormy, difficult problems" which features the evocative lyrics, "I'd like to leave you with something warm. But never have I been a blue calm sea. I have always been a storm," "Go Your Own Way," which morphed into a gorgeous psych jam session as Nicks twirled around in a top hat.

While the rhythm section of drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie, the band's founders and backbones for the last 42 years, really shone at the end – I guarantee that no one will soon forget the wild-eyed, high energy drummer's solo during the encore section of the show -- the band sounded most in synch for one of my favorite songs, "Gold Dust Woman," for which a hunched-over Nicks, wrapped in a gold shawl appeared cobra-like, dancing hypnotically with her back to the audience, as the band accompanied her symbiotically.

But it was a moment during "Sara" where Nicks met Buckingham half way on stage and rested her head on his shoulder that was most bonding – that is until a shout from one crowd member was heard: "Don't do it."

I realized at that moment that for many a fan, Fleetwood Mac needs the tension, that aforementioned quiet storm to succeed. If the band were one big lovefest all the time, we might not all have been there that night at Oakland Arena -- 30 years later.
