I know we briefly mentioned a couple of songs that shared deep similarities to Mac songs- but I couldn't remember or find them- so I was thinking we could all post them here to keep them organized.

I remember there was one that sounded like Say You Will, and another one that was a Sting song.

Anyway, I'd appreciate it- and we can also post any others that we know of!!!

Much Love,
Ethan

The song Silver Lining by Rilo Kiley sounds like something off of Rumours. I'd say Dreams. Even lyrically, it could fit.

I guess the connection has already been stated about Paul McCartney's song Vintage Clothes sounding somewhat similar (in the intro) as Say You Love Me. (Psst: that's about all it has in common because VC is just a really crappy song, unfortunately).

Stevie should have sucked it up and recorded "These Dreams" (later recorded by Heart) so she could have her solo #1/"Bette Davis Eyes" moment.

I don't think Stevie would've scored a #1 hit with that song. Her voice is so different from Nancy Wilson's, whose smooth, unremarkable voice was perfectly suited to the soft-rock focus of that song.

Stevie singing "every second of the night/I live another life" (with her rough RAL voice) would have become just as synonymous with the 80's as Michael Jackson "cause this is thriller/thriller night", Police (Sting) "how my poor heart aches/with every step you take", or anything similar you care to compare.

This song goes #1 for Stevie for a minimum six weeks in 1985. The lyrics were written for Stevie (which is most likely why she declined the song- too close to her own style)- and would have been a massive hit. You cannot convince me otherwise :)

"If I Were You" could've been Stevie's "These Dreams." Should have been lead single.

I agree, "If I Were You" is my favourite RAL-track, And besides, I never got all the hoopla over "These Dreams", it's just a very bland and mediocre song to me:shrug:

Illume sounds like New York by Richard Ashcroft. I think that's come up a few times.

Rilo Kiley-What Fleetwood Mac would have been like if there was no Lindsey, and Stevie was allowed rule the damn roost.. She seems to be heavily influenced by Stevie. I always thought it.

Didn't SPIN magazine dub Rilo Kiley the new FM on their cover?

There are a ton of popular indie artists out there who are constantly compared to Fleetwood Mac (not as a whole, but a song or two):

Midlake
Fleet Foxes
Bat for Lashes
The Decemberists

Have you heard M Ward's new album? It's very Tusk-ish. "Never Had Nobody Like You" is getting lots of airplay here, the fuzzy guitar sounds alone are very Lindsey-ish.

I've always thought the rhythm/bass line of Iron & Wine's "Boy With a Coin" sounds like Illume.

It does a little. The guitar actually reminds me of Rhiannon.

C'mon People by Richard Ashcroft.

And I think the Sting song you're referring to is actually the Police song "Bring on The Night" that has an uncanny similarity to Edge of Seventeen.

It's funny you both say this because on the whole I don't think Rilo Kiley sound much like FM EXCEPT for the song Dreamworld, which isn't sung by Jenny but Blake. I think the guitar and vocal harmonies sound like something from Tango In The Night.
I think the "new FM" tag Spin gave them was due more to the whole Jenny-Blake romance/break-up than the actual music myself.

But the song Roscoe by Midlake has a real Rhiannon-vibe about it and there's a few Ladyhawke songs that sound very Stevie-in-the-mid-80s, particularly Back Of The Van.

I'm going to have to check out that M Ward album now :D

I get what you mean about Boy With a Coin. They're built around similar chords which might be one reason, but I think there's a similar sort of swing and vibe to both songs as well.

This is from a Pitchfork review of Magnolia's The Wooden Birds

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/13070-magnolia/

That precision and the process seem to have pushed [Andrew] Kenny in an interesting musical direction, too, seeing as so much of Magnolia recalls Lindsey Buckingham at his least manic, specifically the strange little ditties that fill Fleetwood Mac's Tusk and Mirage, nestled between the bigger hits. The resemblance is almost uncanny on songs such as "False Alarm", "Hailey", and the brief "Hometown Fantasy", which contains a heart-grabbing minor turn that's a perfect counter to its initial country feel.
