I was over at FMLegacy and was reading about the BTM tour. One the tour setlist, it had Love Is Dangerous as a song they did on this tour. This is one of my faves from the album, and I have not heard this as a song that they did on this tour. Does anyone know for sure if it was, and if so- if there is some recording of it somewhere. I think this would be a great live song, and seeing it in the setlist kind of sparked my interest, since it was something that I hadn't heard before!

Thanks,
Ethan

I'd love to see/hear a live recording of Love Is Dangerous, too -- if you track it down, Ethan, please please please share! (It's not on the Next Stop Main Road bootleg.)

Nickslive recently reprinted a review from the Dec. 1990 Behind the Mask concert in Edmonton. The writer mentioned that they did Love is Dangerous, but called it 'weak.' (Throughout the review, the writer was purely and gleefully venomous about Stevie  )

I thought Stevie and Rick sounded great together. Aren't there video recordings of that song out there somewhere?

I don't think they did it very often on the tour. I've never got to hear it - although I've only heard one BTM bootleg. There are a good amount exsisting but they aren't shared too much.

If memory serves, and it may not seeing as it was so many years ago now, but I seem to recall that they did do "Love Is Dangerous" in Oakland, CA on that tour. I was only about 10 rows back and the Mac left me almost deaf the whole next day!!!!!! On the encore, Lindsey came out with them and they played "Go Your Own Way" with him and it was incredible!! Lindsey sang and played and it was just awesome. Damned near blew the roof off the place.

I honestly love this incarnation of FM. It was so great! A definite missed opportunity when they did not follow up BTM with another album. Although I would say that Mick is redeeming himself with his renewed association with Rick on the MFBB and Island Rumours Band. If you haven't heard "Blue Again!" I highly recommend it. That whole band ROCKS!!!!!!

Someone around here used to claim that those versions of Go Your Own Way from Oakland and then from Los Angeles on the last show where Lindsey joined were the best versions of the song ever. I don't know, I've yet to ever hear a recording of either so if anyone has them, please please let me know. Those recordings are truly about the only thing Fleetwood Mac I've wanted to attain but have had no luck in all of these years.

Lindsey also did Landslide with Stevie at these shows and I believe it is the Oakland show video that is on YouTube.

"Love Is Dangerous" was a staple of the set of the last leg.

But an even better song for Stevie Nicks performance was "Stand On the Rock." Stevie did great high-range yelling backup vocals, believe it or not.

I recall "Love Is Dangerous" just being one of the set's MANY "high points", when I saw the final show of the 1990 tour.

I think "weak" describes "Stand On The Rock" (both studio & live); never really cared for that song. And, that comment comes from one of Rick's biggest fans.

(I still maintain that "Got No Home" should've been on the BTM album in it's place...and would've been a hit single had it been released as one)

I wish I could find one of those BTM demo's...I've never heard Got No Home or the original Mac demo of Intuition. :distress: I keep scanning ebay and any other sources where it might show up.

I've seen a video of Rick doing Love Is Dangerous (solo), but I sure wish I could have seen them performing it back then.

I've never heard Got No Home or the original Mac demo of Intuition.

The FMac "Intuition" sounds pretty much identical to Rick's King Of Hearts version, except the background vocals are done by Chris & Billy instead of Stevie...and of course, the rock solid Mick & John rhythm section instead of a drum machine and Rick on bass himself. But, even still, it's actually pretty tough to tell them apart until the background vocals come in.

you have to admit...some of those descriptions are just plain laughable.

Helen Metella on Stevie Nicks:
"Swaddled in what resembled adult-sized christening coats..."

"what explains her deliberately and wordlessly padding off-stage..."

"Nicks' ridiculously outdated wood-nymph routine..."

She must have spent weeks thinking up such metaphors and stabs.

They sang Love is Dangerous in Cincinnati, but I was crushed they didn't sing Save Me. I guess since the song only peaked at #36, they decided to drop it from the set list.

I saw the Farewell tour in Pittsburgh and Save Me was dropped and Say You Love Me put in the set instead.

Did anybody see Lindsey’s performance in this tour? According to Mick’s coffee table book, My twenty-five years in Fleetwood Mac, “And at the last show in Los Angeles, Lindsey mounted the stage to play some frenzied guitar, a fitting way for this edition of Fleetwood Mac to say goodbye. For now.” (The book ended here).

That goodbye must refer to what he previous told, “That summer’s series of Euro shows also saw both Chris and Stevie announce in midtour that they would be leaving the band. Both women were wealthy and famous, and neither felt like continuing the pressure and the pace that went along with life in Fleetwood Mac”.

Well, that last paragraph is far from accurate, since the real reasons (specially Stevie’s) were completely different, or so I read.

When Mick finally hangs it up and needs money, he will auction off his prized possession like his drum suit he had for the 1987 and 1990 tour. I will buy it for you so you can hang it on your wall next Biddy's undies.

According to some sources, this was the week when Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie announced they were leaving the band at the end of the 1990 tour.

Mick said the reason was "they were wealthy, famous and didn't felt like continuing the pressure and the pace that went along with life in Fleetwood Mac. The two ladies reached this decision together, although both indicated they would continue to record with the band in the future". (My Twenty-five Years in Fleetwood Mac, Mick Fleetwood 1992).

However, many believed that Nicks’ and McVie’s departures were hastened by bad blood in the wake of Fleetwood’s 1990 book.

I vaguely remember hearing that Chris was finished touring with the band an eensy-weensy bit before Stevie, but it was very close on the actual calendar. I don’t think either of them had any bad blood about the book (other than disgust with its trashiness). Remember that Stevie would frequently introduce Mick onstage as the bestselling author — whether tongue in cheek or not, she wasn’t really angry about his book. When they both decided they were done touring, my impression was that they were just very tired, especially since the band was really struggling to appeal to a radio audience and sell albums and it wasn’t working. People get tired — remember how Bob Welch got tired after a run of bad luck (a fake band, low sales, artistic stagnancy)? Stevie was battling her tranquilizer addiction and Christine missed what was left of her family. A person can sour on a band that isn’t cool anymore. It takes a lot out of you to smile in public to try to prop up the organization indefinitely.

I don't think chris had any bad feelings about the book...? i mean, mick painted her in a very good light.. (better than anyone else, imo!) and i don't think stevie was too upset either after she got over the initial revelation of the affair bit.

I tend to believe that they were just tired, and less than enthused. The early-mid 90s were not kind to FM, they were sort of fading at that time... they probably figured the band were on their way to an eventual 'end point' anyway.

Grunge killed off the classic rock stars, at least for a few years. Look and Lindsey's opus, OOTC. He couldn't get arrested with it.

Grunge is when I turned to country music. I need HARMONY and MELODY, and country groups were FAR closer to FM and The Eagles than grunge could ever be....

But he did make Stevie seem like an idiot a few times outing her for falling off the stage on the RAL tour and taking microdot acid and could not stop laughing trying to find Mick and the airport, and threatening the band making Tango about going to Rolling Stone. True the affair was the most revealing but Stevie got spooked at the book because she asked Mick directly "what's in it?" She knew that he could of had the greatest tell all of all time. He just leaked a few juicy ones. She threatened to sue him.

That would make sense with the timing. The tour was just about to resume back in the states after Chris needed time off and some added European dates. My July concert had been cancelled but they made up the date in November. It was sad seeing things come to an end (supposedly). They even renamed the tour the "Farewell Tour" based on this press release.

I actually met him(at sound check) working security at one of his concerts. I was 19. No one will ever replace FM in my life, ALTHOUGH the Eagles have always been neck and neck with them(but I didn't follow their personalities- because Don and Glenn have none, like I did with FM).

Diamond Rio has always been my favorite. Fantastic harmonies, and top notch musicianship.

By the mid 90s I also read—though I don't recall where—that Christine and Stevie stepped away from touring but would still agree to collaborate on Mac albums. However, when Mick (supposedly) wouldn't let Stevie include Silver Springs on Timespace, that was the "last straw" for her, and at that moment she wanted nothing more to do with Fleetwood Mac. That’s how the Time lineup came to be formed later on.

I say "supposedly" because I also read somewhere that it was actually Warner that didn't authorize Silver Springs to appear on a Modern Records release. And Mick couldn´t do anything. Don´t know if that was true.

I read an unauthorized Eagles bio (don't worry it wasn't written by Mick) long ago, late 90s I guess. I don´t remember so much about it, but I do remember that's how I learned Linda Ronstadt helped them in their first days.

Oh, she's so dramatic. He's allowed to have a chuckle at some of her little screw ups. and i'm sure he had tons more he could have put in the book that he left out... but that's why he didn't want to let anyone see the book before it came out-- because everyone would have little tidbits they might object to and get ticked off about.

I listened to a podcast with Dennis Dunston a few years ago. He said Stevie wasn't mad about the book. They just made it seem that way for the publicity. How true that is who knows. I think Chris was ready for a break. Without Lindsey, it is not the same band. And Stevie said she and Chris made a pact, but I don't believe that one too much. I think she felt it wasn't the same without Lindsey also. I'm sure her management encouraged her to leave FM and do more for her solo career. Of course the Kolonopin addiction didn't help things either.

It is in Bob's book where I read that. But he didn't include the source.

Why did Stevie and Christine decide to leave the band? Certainly they felt outraged at Mick’s revelations contained in his autobiography published in 1990. Nicks felt particularly aggrieved with regard to his “kiss’n’tell” account of their earlier affair. She also wanted to pursue her solo career. Nicks had always been the most commercial successful of the five as a solo performer. As a prolific and talented songwriter, she had often found it terribly frustrating that only two or three of her songs ever appeared on Mac albums.

Christine was simply tired of the madness which seemed to have surrounded the Mac for the previous two decades. After all, John would wryly comment that “the only two people in this band who haven’t had an affair are Mick and me!” Although Mick would put up a brave front to the press, claiming that Fleetwood Mac had not really broken up, but were merely “taking a break”, few believed him. After all, the true architects of the band’s success from the mid-Seventies onwards had been the writers: Nicks, Christine McVie and the departed Buckingham. John and Mick rightly prided themselves on their respective roles within the band. Their resilience and stamina had kept the often-beleaguered group afloat for years, but neither of them claimed to be any more than highly efficient members of one of the best rhythm sections in the world. They needed talented singers and writers if Fleetwood Mac were to survive.

All Mac members retreated into solo mode, with varying degrees of success. Fleetwood Mac would be placed on hold for a while. Stevie Nicks’ estrangement intensified when, to her fury, Mick Fleetwood would not allow her to place her beautiful song ‘Silver Springs’ on the Greatest Hits package she was carefully compiling (Timespace — The Best Of Stevie Nicks). It wasn’t quite his fault. Mick, who owned the rights to Fleetwood Mac songs, had signed a deal with Warner Brothers, who would not give permission for ‘Springs’ to be released on another record label. Stevie dramatically announced that she would never again have anything whatsoever to do with Fleetwood Mac.

Mick Fleetwood reluctantly resigned himself to the loss of the two major players in the Fleetwood Mac organization, and started to do what he had always done best. Pick himself up, and look to the future. Just to add to Fleetwood Mac’s problems, Rick Vito also left the band. Good old musical differences were cited. Only Billy Burnette remained from the Behind The Mask line-up.

Maybe I am reading between the lines but its possible Mick could have changed something to allow Warner to release the song. She alleges he was avoiding her and had to contact Dennis to get him to call her. When does Mick ever ignore Stevie's calls? It was a brief but wild era. Personally I loved the Mick vs Stevie cat fight. To have been a fly on the wall.

And I love history. That's why I'm very intrigued by this episode.

I don't quite understand when Bob said "Mick owned the rights to Fleetwood Mac songs" What exactly did he own? I tried to understand these business elements so I did some research yesterday. It was fun, but I’m still confused.

In the White album CD book, all songs have the same: (©) Gentoo Music, Inc – BMI. I understand BMI is a music rights management company, and Gentoo Music is an inactive publishing company for historic music catalogs.

But since Rumours (actually I checked my 2004 CD book), Lindsey’s songs have (©) Now Sound Music (ASCAP). Christine’s songs have Careers-BMG Music Publishing Inc. (BMI) and Stevie’s songs have Welsh Witch Music- All rights administered by Sony/ATV Music Publishing. The Chain song has those three companies plus Molly Mac Musci (BMI) and Rattleman Music (BMI). No need to look for the members related to these two.

The Tusk songs feature the same companies associated with each member as on Rumours. Except Beautiful Child, who said Unichappell Music Inc (BMI) and Music for Unicef. That makes sense since Stevie donated "Beautiful Child" and all of its royalties to the UN fundraising campaign.

However I don’t know if those publishing companies’ links with each song have changed over time or depend on each release, because I found a picture of the Silver Springs vinyl record, and it has Gentoo Music/Welsh Witch Music. I suppose all the Rumours original album songs have the Gentoo Music/ along with each member's respective company, does anybody know? I don’t have an original Rumours, but in the 1992 The Chain boxset, Silver Springs (and all Rumours songs) does not have the Gentoo Music/... It has just Welsh Witch Music.

And in the Timespace CD only Beauty and the Beast and Desert Angel have the Welsh Witch Music. Why don't the other songs written by Stevie have Welsh Witch as publishing company?

Anyway, again the core question… what did Mick exactly own? If he owns Gentoo Music, was that how he prevented Silver Springs from being included on Timespace? Why did he use Rattlesnake Music for The Chain instead of Gentoo? Was it because there are/were several owners of Gentoo Music? And… How much power does the record label have over those publishing companies?

Its a really good question. I wish someone would ask her about it but its water under the bridge now. She could have re-recorded the song easy for her album. But I think she knew the magic could not be duplicated and having Silver Springs finally on an official release CD would have boosted sales. My guess is she was requesting Mick do something with the label to release it to her. Why Mick would have this power and not her is another question. But Stevie had been in the business long enough to know how things work.

Edit: This is what AI says and it makes sense

AI Mode Conversation: why did Mick Fleetwood not release Silver Springs to Stevie Nicks in 1991why did Mick Fleetwood not release Silver Springs to Stevie Nicks in 1991Mick Fleetwood refused to release "Silver Springs" to Stevie Nicks in 1991 because he was already planning to use the track for an upcoming Fleetwood Mac box set. When Nicks was preparing her 1991 solo greatest hits compilation, Timespace – The Best of Stevie Nicks, she deeply desired to include "Silver Springs," a personal masterpiece she had written about Lindsey Buckingham during the Rumours era. Because the song had been cut from the 1977 album and relegated to the B-side of "Go Your Own Way," Nicks felt the track belonged to her and her family. However, Mick Fleetwood held the rights to the song as a band asset. He denied her request based on two primary factors:The 25th Anniversary Box Set: Fleetwood was actively compiling the band's comprehensive retrospective, 25 Years – The Chain, which was slated for a 1992 release.High Commercial Value: Because "Silver Springs" had never appeared on a proper Fleetwood Mac studio album, Fleetwood knew it was a rare, highly sought-after track that would serve as a major selling point and exclusive anchor for the band's box set. This copyright and creative tug-of-war became a breaking point for Nicks. She issued an ultimatum through Fleetwood's manager, warning that if she didn't get the tapes, she would leave the band. Fleetwood stood his ground, the song went onto The Chain box set, and true to her word, Nicks quit Fleetwood Mac later that year, not returning until their famous 1997 reunion for The Dance.

So they both wanted it for the same reason $$$$$. Mick held the song as an asset since it was not a Rumours track. Clearly Mick had sour grapes about her leaving and was trying to milk every dime out of the 25th anniversary box set. I will side with Stevie on this one even though looking back it was better saved for The Dance. Stevie committed to tour around the world even though the album BTM was not very successful in the States. After the tour resumed with Chris again, Mick created more European dates because it was already announced that Chris and Stevie were leaving at the end of the tour (at least for touring). Stevie made sacrifices for Mick many times including not taking her own management's advice to leave the band after Lindsey did. Timespace got majorly delayed because of the BTM tour postponement where they toured into December 1990. Mick was being his greedy self thinking grab as much money because the big touring days were over (at least at this time).

It makes perfect sense the reason had to do with the 1992 box set. I’m sure that’s why Stevie’s words on that album had that kind of sarcastic touch.

If you could rearrange timing in Stevie's career Timespace could have been huge. Instead of coming post OSOTM and BTM which both struggled to go gold, imagine Timespace being released early 1989 when Bon Jovi and Poison were ruling the charts. Sometimes Its A Bitch would have charted but I bet Mick would have given Stevie Silver Springs on the album.

Yes, in UK. And Go Your Own Way reached No. 1 in the Netherlands and Belgium. As Everywhere in Belgium.

But I think those words were meant to tell Mick, "Look what you missed out on by not giving me my song". However I find it very unlikely that Fleetwood Mac could have scored a number-one hit with a song of hers in the 90s. Too late Stevie.

But even though they may have been bitter words directed at Mick, she was being so mononeural in not caring what Lindsey and Christine thought. In any case, I don't think Lindsey cared. And Christine might have laughed when reading it and thinking about how many singles she produced versus how many Stevie did. In any case, I don't think it was the best quote to include in the box set.

This interview was posted here before a few times. But I love this era. Stevie is on tour with Street Angel. The host asks "how is the tour going?" Her response is about shows being cancelled because of a "tornado." She then talks about how thankful she is not to be in Fleetwood Mac anymore because she would not be able to enjoy the tour. She alleges the band would be upset and waiting for her. Songwriting is brought up near the end and Stevie says that Chris wrote most of the hits because Chris's song writing is "wilting" and her songs are not. That is a negative adjective that describes a plant without water. Rick Vito tries to bail her out and asks who wrote Fleetwood Mac's only #1 song? The dumb DJ asks "what song was that." Stevie sounds nervous in this interview, and you can tell she is unhappy. I love the bitter Stevie era

On another note I have read it was not a tornado that cancelled her show but a stalker that was traveling around trying to meet her. Her solo album tanked, her single never charted, she was without Fleetwood Mac, people were making fun of her weight, and ticket sales were poor. I was living in West Palm Beach at the time and ticket sales never went on sale but she was just going to announce but it was cancelled 2 shows at the Kravis center in downtown. Its a small theater.

Warner reissued “Silver Springs” in 1988 as the b-side to “Don’t Stop”in its Back-To-Back Hits series and thus owned the releasing rights until 1998. Labels only lose their releasing rights if a work goes out of print for over ten years.

So, I don’t think Mick could have just let her have that version of the song. Still, she was free to just rerecord the song, and she knows this. It’s not like she and Lindsey didn’t rerecord “Crystal” with Fleetwood Mac.
