I can't hear any Stevie vocals on "Hold Me"; I always thought it was a Christine/Lindsey duet. While I usually prefer the three-part harmony sound, "Hold Me" actually works quite well with just McVie and Buckingham.

Come to think of it, Stevie's vocal contributions to "Mirage" are pretty sparse, as they would be with "Tango In The Night" five years later. She sings on her three songs and adds harmonies to "Love In Store" and that's it.

I thought for years that she was singing backup on "Book Of Love", but Lindsey indicated in a long-ago interview that he manipulated his own voice and made it sound like Stevie.

I think all singers sing in all studio versions except great exceptions like Songbird or Never going back again. But sometimes voices are hardly listened in some songs just to achieve the adequated harmony

Yeah, I can't hear Stevie on it either.

Lindsey sure loves those vocal manipulations, don't you think? He started early, too. I think Tusk was the first album he did that with.. perhaps earlier, on Gold Dust Woman - near the end there is some eerie noise and I'm not sure if it's Stevie, a guitar, or Lindsey messing around in the studio.

As for studio cuts, they're impossibly crafted & combined on FM albums. There's no telling for sure who's on what unless it's plain & clear to the ear. Otherwise it's like trying to identify a specific squiggle in a Jackson Pollock painting.

My most FAVORITE song by FM as a band ever. I am sure I hear Stevie in the vocals, but maybe not. I listen to it VERY loudly. I love that song.

According to the Rumours Classic Albums doc it's Lindsey messing around with guitar sounds, but I'm not entirely convinced it isn't (partially) Stevie.

Hey, wasn't there a pre-Mirage print interview in which Stevie said that the band had just finished recording a Chris McVie song & that it was really great? She called it extraordinary or something -- but she didn't identify the title. I always figured it was either "Hold Me" or "Love in Store." But the comment Stevie made implied that she herself had tracked on it.

Oh, remember the "Conversations" tape when Stevie tells Christine she won't forgive her for having Lindsey sing on her song (Hold Me). Christine makes some excuse, by claiming it wasn't a duet or something. Lindsey was just helping her out (a lie if you ask me) but Stevie doesn't buy it and just keeps saying, "It's over. It's over. It's over."

So, funny.

That must have been in or about 1978. Then, just before Mirage came out Stevie had that interview when she talked about Smile At You not being on the album and how she dragged Lindsey and made him sing on the songs. I believe she was talking about one of Christine's songs.

Aaah, yes. The acrimonious dobro. I think Stevie's vocals are mixed in too - I prefer the Rumours reissue w/ the alternate version of GDW, the ending vocals/wailing are cool.

This is from the High Times interview she did. She was asked about writing Think About It for Christine. It's just amusing to me, because of the way she says she wasn't going to let no singing go on the album. :

Yeah, when I really love something that she does, I really get in there and help her with it. She can do it alone. She really doesn’t need anyone, but when she writes something that I really take to heart, then I go for it. I stay up all night with her and we work on it. I really work on it and I drag Lindsey and her in there and make them sing, because that’s what they forget: they forget that there’s three of us and how good we sing. I irritate them to death. It’s like a little bug. I keep saying, "Lindsey, you and I should sing this part. It’s important that we sing this part; it would sound terrific." And they eventually do it. Especially because I am not going to stand by and watch no singing go on this album.

As an aside - in the BD RS cover photoshoot in, say 1981 - La Nicks is playing some songs from Mirage - I think Wish You Were Here, Can't Go Back, That's Alright, and maybe another were played. I cannot remember if Hold me was played. This leads me to believe that some of the Mirage songs were holdovers in a somewhat completed form from the Tusk recording sessions or shortly thereafter. That's Alright was written in like 1974. In the end, while they worked on the Mirage songs after the Tusk tour - many of them had vocals laid down prior to that, though those vocals may not have been on the prior product.

As for Hold Me - I can hear La Nicks in the mix. When it was release - I remember thinking it odd that FM's lead single did not more heavily feature La Nicks, who at that time was one of the largest stars in the world. I do love hold me though. I just wish it had a third set of lyrics instead of LB's penchant for repeating the chorus after the bridge.

I also found it odd that LB was so quick to cut La Nicks' stanzas, yet he would do this repeating of the same thing. Oh well.

Interestingly, Hold Me could have been done with the tree voices on after another on the "Hold Me - Hold Me - Hold Me" chorus, which is sooooooo beautiful and lush as it is.

IMO - though they all had their moments on each - Mirage and, more so, TITN were CM's shining pop moments of a stellar history. of course, Wish You Were Here is one of my fav.'s by her and the band.

Where are you people getting all this bizarre information? Can you substantiate this assertion?

A search on you tube will reveal the 1981 Rolling Stone photo shoot, which was done prior to the release of Mirage. In that footage, several Mirage songs are played. Plus, as Michelle noted, the audio tapes reveal Hold Me was done prior to then.

What does repeating the chorus after the bridge (you mean the instrumental break?) have to do with LB?

They label such things as a bridge in the liner notes. What I mean is after the instrumental break in Hold Me - the chorus just repeats until the fade out. I would have liked to have heard another stanza. Who knows, maybe CM did not have another one. I say the same thing about Say You Will (the song) -- there is the bridge/instrumental break and then the repeat of the chorus until it fades out. I want to hear another stanza there. LB produced the record and we don't see this structure in La Nicks' solo work. So, I conclude LB does this. This is all, however, my opinion based on said and other observations.

What Nicks stanzas?

La Nicks has stated that Sara was cut and verses/stanzas were never heard.

Cool - thanks for posting.

But, this is still prior to Mirage and likely Bella Donna (released 7/2001) as Robin died when BD reached No. 1 (9/2001)

Mirage was released in June 1982. Presumably, it was finished and ready for pressing and shipping a few months before that.

La Nicks' BD tour was a couple of weeks during the two months of 1981.

Interestingly, Gypsy allegedly was to be on BD, but was re-worked for Mirage.

All of this supports my theory that much of Mirage was in production long before 1981 - though I am sure some additional work went into it in 1981 and possibly 1982 considering La Nick said she put a copy of the finished BD in the studio for LB. Presumably, they were in the studio to record mirage as they did not record anything after Mirage until like 1985-86 for TITN and La Nicks was not really around that much for that.

The recording sessions book I have says they were in Herouville from May to June 1981 working on Mirage and then worked on overdubs over the next 6 months of 1981 in Los Angeles (Record Plant and Larrabee Sound).

I had thought Hold Me was earlier, but I have all of those audio "conversations" on just 2 CD discs and I guess I just blended them all together in my head and don't really have an accurate idea of the chronology of what was said when, when I listened to them.

Hold Me was written expressly for Mirage. It was not written in the late 70s. Rarely does Chris hold on to extra songs. She tends to write only what she needs for any given project. She does have, however, a large backlog of fragments and ideas.

Plus, as Michelle noted, the audio tapes reveal Hold Me was done prior to then.I look forward to hearing these tapes for confirmation that the "Hold Me" tracks were recorded before the Tusk tour.

They label such things as a bridge in the liner notes. What I mean is after the instrumental break in Hold Me - the chorus just repeats until the fade out.I know which section you're referring to. I call it an instrumental break. If you prefer the slightly more ambiguous "bridge," have at it. (I say ambiguous because of the fact that the term "bridge" can, in popular song parlance, have several different meanings, although the primary one is that of a sung section of the song with a unique -- i.e., nonrepeated -- melodic or chordal backdrop. A prime example of a bridge is the "Sooner or later/I'll keep the promise I made to you/Sooner or later/It will be greater/Than we ever knew" section in "Skies the Limit," in which the tonic-based verse & chorus modulate to the minor submediant.)

LB produced the record and we don't see this structure in La Nicks' solo work.We don't?

La Nicks has stated that Sara was cut and verses/stanzas were never heard. But Stevie never specified whether the Fleetwood Mac track was cut so drastically, or whether all those thousands of other stanzas were simply not recorded to begin with.

Well, That's Alright has a 1973 or 74 demo. and Gypsy was recorded for BD, which began recording in 1979

So, it appears that some where in production, though clearly not completed.

In any event, here is what I said:

As an aside - in the BD RS cover photoshoot in, say 1981 - La Nicks is playing some songs from Mirage - I think Wish You Were Here, Can't Go Back, That's Alright, and maybe another were played. Based on all that was discussed above and that Mirage songs were played in their completed form in Aug. or Sept. 1981, it is not beyond speculation that some of the songs were around in one form or another prior to 1981, esp. considering Tusk was released in Oct. 1979 and they toured pretty much nonstop until Sept. 1980. Who knows though, maybe they took no break and went directly into the studio and produced Mirage in one year all while La Nicks simultaneously finished BD and rehearsed and did her mini tour for BD.

I think you think I am saying that the Mirage songs were done, completed, in the can, etc. prior to the release of Tusk. I am not and did not. I am just saying that some, not all, of the songs could have been worked in one form or another on prior to the release of Tusk and the subsequent tour and La Nicks' production and very brief BD tour. They could have worked on them individually or as a band. This is not beyond the realm of possibility.

Song after song expresses a mixture of longing and remembrance, as Mr. Buckingham's shimmering arrangements for the quintet's three principal singers - himself, Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks - evoke the members of the group calling to one another from mist-shrouded turrets, across vast distances.

is such a cool/accurate image

On edit - the image is true for Little Lies. But, it also is pretty accurate for WISYA, with the exception that it is LB seemingly calling from his mist-shrouded turret across vast a distance at the end of the song - along with that beautiful guitar track he shines with.

I thought about that.

Plus, I am sure the three writers (and likely Mick and John) do stuff when the others are not around - and they write that down, record it, etc. for later use.

As to producing a final song, I am sure that usually is a much more specific and focused effort, which Hold me likely was. But, surely, they all call back on things they created in the past but never used.

And I remember Mick saying on the Rumours DVD that Lindsey not only remembered his own old stuff, but the "girls'" too. That comment suggested to me that maybe the three songwriters had a trove of unused material somewhere that they'd worked on in the past and discarded (have a butter cookie). However, I concede Aleuzzi's point, based on what Christine herself has said.

Still, that probably changed once Christine stopped working full time and has been at her leisure. Now she probably does have songs that she never wrote or used for any particular purpose and hasn't recorded. Songs written during the divorce, etc. She may not have had a store of them in the old days, but I think she's built up a little archive now.

Yes, once I read the transcript, that was a good time marker. Stevie said that she and Sara were at the hospital and found out they had the exact same temperature as Robin had and the nurse told them they should be hospitalized too. Also, they were listening to Straight Back in the limo, same conversation.

I had thought Hold Me was earlier, but I have all of those audio "conversations" on just 2 CD discs and I guess I just blended them all together in my head and don't really have an accurate idea of the chronology of what was said when, when I listened to them.

I have a few of these recordings, and I know someone has posted some files in the past, but I really want to hear all of them. Can you tell me where I might find them? Thanks!

Someone did post them, but now all the links have expired in those old posts. So, I don't know where to get all of them anymore.

Michele

Me too -- and - I think CM is in a much better position to create because she plays the piano so well. i sort of see/imagine her sitting at her piano late at night just creating.

Interestingly, we have seen La Nicks take a former part of a song that was cut and use it in another song. An example is the ending of GDW (presumably the original ending) - the "baby don't leave me" harmony fest. That was later (presumably) used in if You Ever Did believe, which she presumably wrote after GDW. I say presumably because we really do not know which came first. We only know when they were released, etc. For all we know, both songs could be part of the same part of her journal.

This is why I maintain that some of the songs were worked on in some fashion prior to 1981 or thereabouts.

Isn't it La Nicks who says that they work on stuff and sometimes it does not work out, but later does a la Smile at You.

I thought for years that she was singing backup on "Book Of Love", but Lindsey indicated in a long-ago interview that he manipulated his own voice and made it sound like Stevie.

dont u think it's weird that lindsey always/mostly manips his voice into a feminine one...that often sounds like Stevie?

i know there's a bunch of songs i thought were stevie singing and actually it's lindsey :D

She said whenever you speed his voice up or slow hers down they sound like each other, so I don't know if he's trying to sound like her or if that's just the result he gets when he jimmies his voice.

I was just thinking the same thing the other day.
Maybe through all those years it was a little "You're here cos I saw so." message to Ms. Nicks.

"Look, if I wanted to, I could make a virtual Stevie, and you wouldn't be needed. So STFU and do as your told." :p

Naturally, I'm kidding. But it's funny to think about such instances.

There are several earlier songs that Stevie is either very faint in the mix or not at all (at least to my ear):

White Album:
Over My Head...Single mix a little better
World Turning...very minimal
Rumours:
Don't Stop....Not too audible, but there to a slight extent
Songbird
Tusk:
Think About Me....Not too audible. Single version much better (unless it's Lindsey)
Save Me A Place....I don't think she's on it.
What Makes You Think You're The One....obviously not on it.
Not That Funny....Obviously not on this song.
That's Enough For Me.....Not on this song.

I think that in the FM FM and Rumours era, La Nicks and LB's voice were very difficult to tell apart at times. Of course, La Nicks had a wider range then than now and when she went really high, she sounded nothing like LB, whise voice was already very high for a male. Listening to that track of the making of "The Chain" when they are finding the harmony structure demonstrates this point well; it also demonstrates why I think her vocals then were among the most interesting and compelling of any of her contemporary female singers in that genre.

As does La Nicks' high harmony of Over My Head and her lead on Beautiful Child.

Lindsey's use of the speed oscillator in the studio perhaps has a basis in his fondness for the vocals on old tracks from the 1950s & early '60s, when the doo-wop groups were big. Those groups frequently treated backup vocals at the extreme ends of the range spectrum for men: high alto & baritone, & even falsetto soprano.

Whenever I think about what Lindsey is trying to do on a record or why he is trying to do it, I remind myself of the musical styles from his younger years that he learned to simulate.

On "Say You Will," I think Lindsey deliberately emphasizes Stevie's heavy nasality (no bottom end in her voice anymore) by flanging or phasing her lead vocal so frequently (like on "Everybody Finds Out" & "Illume" & "Destiny Rules"). As for why he does this, I don't know. I find the sound unpleasant, but maybe he really digs it. Of course, he phases his own vocals often enough, too, especially on his last two solo albums.

I think he's saying that Lindsey has been adding studio trickery and effects over Stevies voice that brings out a more nasal quality to it.

Hmmm, I would disagree that Stevie can be heard prominently in the mix on "Everywhere". I suppose she could be singing background parts in the chorus, but those voices have been so heavily processed with studio trickery that it could be any of them (Nicks, McVie, Buckingham). Contrast with The Dance version, where her voice is prominent in the chorus background vocals. I wish they would have used that vocal arrangement on the studio version.

LB admitted in a long ago interview that he electronically manipulated his voice to sound like Stevie's on the "Book Of Love" intro, which certainly fooled me until I read that. But I don't hear her on "Only Over You" or "Wish You Were Here".

I honestly do not grasp what you're saying. Could you re-phrase (no pun intended) so a non-studio person like me understand?I'm a non-studio person, Tony. Think of the vocal sound of the opening lines of "Everybody Finds Out." It has that space-age, wobbly quality. It's akin to a phased effect, with minimal bottom end (or low frequencies).

Flanging & phasing are audio processing techniques that alter the peaks & troughs of sound waves.

Stevie has a natural nasal quality to her singing & projection. In my last post, I suggested the idea that Lindsey uses processing techniques to compound that nasal quality in her.

Here's a YouTube video of some audio processing of a vocal using Pro Tools.

I know what you mean on EFO, but I don't hear it on the other songs you mentioned, (Illume and DR). To me it works on Everybody Finds Out because it gives the vocal a clinical, distanced sound that matches the lyrics. It's like the patient is being observed by a detached doctor, nurse or narrator, taking notes, while monitoring her decline.

I think its funny that they didnt include her on so many songs.
From hearing audio from them talking and stuff, and interviews, it really sounds like they left her out of a lotta stuff.
which is funny because I think she was one of the main reasons the band skyrocketed
