Hi everyone,

A good friend of mine, after hanging around with me for so long, is belatedly getting into Fleetwood Mac and Stevie. After giving one of my several copies of Rumours and watching the classic albums documentary I'm going to see how she fares with Tusk, haha.

Amyway, she asked me to make her a cd of Stevie's solo stuff and so that's what I spent some time on today. I'm sure these kinds of threads have been done time and time again but hey, they're always good for fun debate and provoking outrage so I thought I'd share my choices with you and see what you thought.

I'd also be interested in what you think of the sequencing, as I was constantly changing the order of the tracks until I was happy with them.

I set myself some ground rules: All tracks had to be from her solo output (have done a companion Mac cd for her), all albums had to be represented and I focused on her biggest hits and my favourite album cuts. I think there are a few random choices in there!

Here's what I've come up with for her:

1. Stand Back (was gonna go for Soundstage version but since it's an introductory cd I didn't.)

2. Stop Draggin' My Heart Around
3. Rooms On Fire
4. Leather and Lace
5. Enchanted
6. Talk To Me
7. Too Far From Texas
8. How Still My Love (again, not soundstage one. It was too long!)
9. If Anyone Falls (No 'in love' on my tracklist. I'm old school - haha!)
10. Think About It
11. Blue Denim
12. After The Glitter Fades
13. Sorcerer
14. Crash
15. Fall From Grace (again, the album version, not Soundstage)
16. Beauty and the Beast (it HAD to be Soundstage version this time!)
17. Edge of Seventeen (and I've just noticed the 'seventeen' is track 17 now - d'oh!)

What do you guys think? I'm pretty happy with it but I do know that Rock A Little, Other Side of the Mirror and Street Angel are undererpresented but hey, there's always volume 2 for slightly more obscure tracks!

Let the debate begin....

Why 'Too Far From Texas'? I'd either switch that with 'Nightbird', 'I Can't Wait' or 'Planets'.

i'd use beauty and the beast from the wild heart,
and put i cant wait in

I was in two minds whether or not to put I Can't Wait on. I know it was a big hit and Stevie always says how much she likes it (as she proved by putting it on Crystal Visions) but it's just never done it for me and so my own opinion won out! I thought Talk To Me would do just as well as an introduction to the Rock A Little era. I can always just play I Can't Wait for her here sometime.

As for Too Far From Texas - I just love it! One of the strongest tracks she's done in years and I think it's a very important song on Trouble In Shangri-La.

I like your selections but I definitely would add I Can't Wait. To me this song is one Stevie needs to add to here solo tours as the opening number. I also would add in a couple of gems that don't get alot of attention, as bonus tracks.

1. No Spoken Word

2. Outside the Rain

Great complilation, your friend is lucky you know how to get your Nickfix!!

Didn't Stevie say once that they tried doing I Can't Wait live once and it was a complete disaster? I think it may have been on the Crystal Visions dvd of the video. She said something like it's a studio track and just doesn't work on stage or something like that....

If I were you I'd add Outside the Rain, I Can't Wait, Sister Honey, and Alice. I'd also throw in some demos and stuff in there, like Christian/Spinning Wheels.

Yes. She sang it throughout the Rock A Little Tour.

Yeah she said that...either she forgot she played it basicly the whole entire RAL tour, or she thought on one night in sounded bad, and the rest were on fire.

You never knew what you could get with I Can't Wait...but that's the fun part. :) Search for I can't wait live on youtube, I've posted up one version there.

I would put Edge first on your list...just cause it's such a powerful track that got me personally into Stevie in the first place.

I gotta agree with replacing Too Far from Texas - with just about anything. I'd kick out Crash and replace with any of her own songs - how about Maybe Love? It would be nice to end with HAEWAFY or any other slower song.

But it is very nice how it is now...cool that you are giving someone else "the bug"

I love thinking about this kind of stuff . . . it's like "if you were stranded on a desert island and could only take 5 cds" . . .

Anyway, I would agree that Too Far From Texas is a little out of place. I would replace it with something like Blue Lamp, or maybe Long Way to Go from RAL. I can't remember now--did you have After the Glitter Fades? That's one of my favorite Stevie solo songs.

yeah, I'd put I Can't Wait, Wild Heart, Blue Lamp, Gold and Braid, Violet and Blue, and Nightbird on there. Those are some of my favs...all her stuff is amazing though. Its hard to narrow down. I would drive myself crazy trying to make a CD where you can only put 17 or 18 tracks on it lolol

Would it be far too controversial to add Crystal and/or If You Ever Did Believe?
I know they aren't "vintage" Stevie strictly speaking.. but..

Excellent choices...you've covered every solo album from Bella Donna to Soundstage Sessions. The only thing i would change is switch out Too Far From Texas with I Can't Wait to add another RAL track on there.

I had already decided against putting demos or stuff like that in there because she's just becoming a fan. I thought I'd make her a good solid introductory cd and see how she gets on with that before going into demo territory..haha

Blue Denim is only on there because I had to have a Street Angel track. It was either going to be that or Maybe Love and since Blue Denim was the bigger hit I went for it.

Haha - I knew that it would be Too Far From Texas that people would pick up on!

Maybe it's because I'm a huge country fan that I love it so much and yeah, I totally get why people think it is out of place but hey, that's all part for the fun!

I can't even begin to think about this one! Not that there's anything wrong with your list, but for me, I couldn't do a single disc one, it would have to be multiple...it would have to include Wildheart, Belladonna, Planets, Nightbird, If You Ever Did Believe, One More Big Time RNR Star, Needles and Pins, Violet & Blue, Ooh My Love, Has Anyone Ever ... just to name a few off the top of my head, and I'm not even going near the demos...

Yeah, that's why I had to set myself limits or it would have gone on for about 5 discs, lol. I decided to stay away from demos etc. See how she gets on with this and then I can always do a volume 2 of rarities etc,.

Here's My List..a lot of good stuff missing but if i had to give an intr. to a new fan..

Bella Donna (first 7 notes i knew i was hooked on Stevie for life.)
Stand Back
I Sing For Things
Rooms On Fire
After The Glitter Fades
Talk To Me
Ooh My Love
Sometimes It's A Bitch
Beauty And The Beast
Stop Dragging My Heart Around
Wild Heart (Another song that hooked me. I remember taking the "record" out of the plastic, putting it on the turntable, putting the needle to the record and was BLOWN AWAY by this song...still am..one of her BEST recordings.)
Edge Of Seventeen
Miss You
Ghosts
If Anyone Falls
Planets Of The Universe
Kick It (autobiographical of her betty ford stay..important song..kind of.)
Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You (perfect close to her library.)

aleuzzi

Yes. She sang throughout the [I]Rock A Little Tour.

And the audience went mad when she did!

I'd have included "Planets of the Universe" and "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You" (the storyteller's performance from 1998).

I would have used FFG from Soundstage because I feel it is a better vocal, stronger and more in command of the song.

I have a long Stevie song list on my iPod which I call my Stevie iMix. And it's just Stevie singing whether it's a Mac song or a solo song. I listen to this one when I just have to listen to Stevie for days. I also have a shorter song list, but this is the longer one:

Gypsy
Thrown Down
Blue Denum
Free Fallin'
Rock and Roll (Live)
Talk to Me
Planets of the Universe
Sweet Girl
Stop Draggin' My Heart Around
Room on Fire
Trouble in Shangri-La
Rhiannon (from The Dance)
Destiny Rules
Gold Dust Woman
Sorcerer
Dreams (from The Dance)
Leather and Lace
Say You Will
Edge of Seventeen
Running Through The Garden
Landslide (from The Dance)
Stand Back
Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You
I Can't Wait
Beautiful Child
Angel
Edge of Seventeen (Live)

I also have two other different ones (set lists) from when she was on her solo tours.

Lee :)

She may have said that but that's bogus. They either had a horrible arrangement for it or they didn't try hard enough. A hit song is a hit song and the fans deserve to hear it. We make songs hits and we are entitled to hear them. Sorry but the excuse that it doesn't work "live" is totally bogus. They used that excuse for why SOTM isn't on the set list this time around on the Unleashed tour yet they have played it "live" before. Okay I am done venting....for now LOL

1. Stand Back (was gonna go for Soundstage version but since it's an introductory cd I didn't.)

I'm not following you on this one Dod. What do you mean you didn't use it because Soundstage is an "introductor" CD? There is not "introduction" on the CD, it's just the actual song. Personally I think it's a good choice as an opener for your friend's CD mix.

Dodfather
05-20-2009, 09:35 AM
What I mean is it's her first ever Stevie cd so I went for a broad introduction to her most popular work (i.e. the hits) and some of her best album tracks. For that reason I went for the more familiar version of Stand Back. Not that the Soundstage version is radically different or anything but I'm sure you see what I mean now...
