View Full Version : Is Stevie Nicks dragging Fleetwood Mac's tour around?

Christine McVie is sitting out the current Fleetwood Mac tour, which plays the St. Pete Times Forum on Wednesday night. But from a glance at reviews, it sounds like it's Stevie Nicks who could use a few days off as well.

The Columbus Dispatch noted that in Saturday's concert, Nicks "looked half-awake. During Second Hand News she seemed to barely follow the tune's clip. During frequent trips to the dressing room she looked like she might fall off her high heels. Introducing Gypsy with a nonsensical rap, Nicks suggested that San Francisco's Summer of Love and the Velvet Underground together inspired the song. In reality, the two musical cultures were as far apart as the thousands of miles that separated their scenes."

Maybe it's just an Ohio thing. Cleveland Scene reviewed the band's April 17 show: "Lindsey Buckingham is still a tremendous presence onstage, ripping through guitar solos with the vibrant energy needed to carry Stevie Nicks’s contrived effort."

"Nicks ... sounded sluggish on many songs, more concerned with her wardrobe changes (I think there were four) than charging the audience with her voice," The Scene said. "When she wanted to, she could still deliver, hitting all the right notes on The Chain and beautifully singing an acoustic Landslide with Buckingham on guitar. But she seemed disengaged most of the time, which affected the entire performance."

Stuck in the '80s co-host and Times pop music critic Sean Daly will be at the show here in Tampa. Maybe a couple days in the warm Florida weather will revive Nicks.

Seriously. Its time to put on comfortable shoes. JUST wear the boots for a few songs like shes done before.

I mean, yeah she wasn't as animated as Lindsey- but I've never been as close as I was the other night, so I have nothing to compare it too. Are you all noticing if she's lacking energy?

I totally noticed it. It was still an amazing concert but she was sluggish during many songs.

fleetwood mac is dragging fleetwood mac around. being in a band, one person isn't responsible for carrying a show; although one certainly can ruin it. Given they are paid for reasonable performance, one would think they would feign some excitement but one need only view the recent GYOW video; Stevie appears to be mentally sifting through phonebooks...disappointing I would imagine. then again, msnicks has always been a storm...rather moody.

anyways...I've been bored with the songs since about the 10th show...I imagine they are too. Yep, they could switch it up...but these are the songs they rehearsed and apparently these are the 'greatest hits' they want to present. Basically though they merged the LB/SN solo shows with a few bits added in. And, frankly, Lindsey even appeared bored after the return from break..I imagine that is why he broke out a different look...and I'm thankful. When I posted silversprings the night prior, I thought to myself one would be hardpress to really tell the difference one show video from another. While I appreciate the FM sound, I mostly look forward to new horizons for them all.

I think Stevie has already gone on record as saying something to the effect that she is not out there trying to compete with Lindsey, and that she doesn't feel that she needs to try to be the center of attention, which is quite the opposite of the role she plays in her own solo shows. Admittedly this isn't like her solo show, in which she plays 14-15 songs and tours for 1-2 months. Fleetwood Mac shows and tours are marathons by comparison. Accordingly, she probably has to maintain a lower energy level just to survive the road. Although Mama is a road warrior in the truest sense of the word, given her weak heart, her fragile voice and the frailties of age, she has to do whatever she has to do to keep up with her alpha male peers. Sure, Lindsey may be running in circles around Mama on stage, but IMHO time has been much kinder to Stevie appearance-wise. Lindsey is the hare, Mama the tortoise- which makes her the long distance winner. :p

I found a 2003 performance of it & that was in (the original) F major. Did the band drop it only for this tour? What key was it in on the recent solo outings?

I think I saw somewhere where she said she had Mitral valve prolapse. My step-daughter has that she was told, and she's only 30. It especially affected her during her pregnancies and her heart would race and it really gave her problems. It scared the crap out of her at times. Sure hope Stevie's alright. Anything to do with the heart isn't to be taken too lightly.

I sorta got the impression that something was wrong with her too when I saw her in Columbus. It didn't matter though. Lindsey and Mick more than made up from it and the best vocal of the night was Storms. I did not think she sang Gypsy or Dreams or Silver Springs well at all.

Well, that's all very good and well and I'm happy it's your opinion. Because I don't agree. Lindsey may not look as line-less and his hair isn't quite as lustrous, but the man has the energy level of someone half his age. And in MY opinion, his is more the tortoise because it took him quite awhile to be at the point where he could be praised for his talents, on his own, on a consistent basis without being engulfed in Stevie's presence.

But it's all good. :wavey: I don't think Stevie is "dragging" anything around, or down. She's simply doing what she can at her age, and I give her a lot of credit for going up there and showing she can still belt it out and making all her fans happy. She is a lovely lady and I thought she did fine.

I haven't been lucky enough to see her in concert lately, but I recently got the Soundstage CD and felt she sounded just. plain. tired. There's nothing wrong w/slowing down. Menopause itself can do that to a lady. And it gets HOT and darn tiring under those lights. I know men go through something like that, too...don't they? OK, Lindsay is NOT your typical man.

I'd love to see her pull out some of the old, unreleased songs and put them out, polished by Stevie in the now. They brought out the softer side of her music, and I'm sure she could easily handle the notes.

BTW, it's great to find a site with lifelong fans to share with. Joined awhile ago but haven't said much. Kept out of a whole lot of Trouble.

I have only seen one show of this tour (Rochester). But I noticed Stevie's energy was comparatively low. She sang VERY well on few tunes but her stage presence was somewhat lacking.

Lindsey, Mick, and John, however, were a powerhouse trio.

Women age differently than men, and I think Stevie is doing remarkably well. However, she should ditch those boots and stick to one dress per show. Hell, I think she could mix it up by wearing PANTS on stage, shedding the whole former chiffon thing. At the end of the day the only thing that matters is her voice--and that is still a unique instrument.

And a body to go with it.

As for his hair . . . it's doing ok. They used to say that baseball caps made men bald faster, but I'm thinking the pony tail John and Mick were always into didn't help much either.

Stevie's hair is indeed her crowning glory. I like it a lot.

Oh good grief- all this bellyachin' over "Mama." clearly I don't mean any disrespect, and I'm certainly not mocking her choice not to have children. It's a term of endearment- not unlike "dear" or "honey." The moniker implies that the person imparts wisdom and is a nurturer and comforter. Haven't you heard the phrase "trust mama on this one," I.e., take it from one who is wise. Accordingly, "Mama" is not defined as a specific gender or age. Mama fits Stevie perfectly, not only because she is the imparted of words of comfort and joy; she also adheres to very matronly values, which would be a more literal interpretation. And finally, she still fits the bill as a "hot mama.". You don't find that offensive too, do y'all?

That's why I don't like it. It makes them sound as if they thought she was wise or comforting, like a big sister or some equally atrocious perspective. I can't stand that widespread view of Stevie, that touchy-feely way of seeing her. I don't think Stevie's "dragging" them down at all.

Bottom line is this: They're all getting old so, no, they aren't going to be just 110% rocking out on stage. Give them a break. When you're 60 years old, I'd like to see you do a huge tour night after night. Yeah, get back to me on that.

Mama (please don't shun me for calling her that - it's a term of affection, I promise!) stands on her feet for about two and a half hours every night, wearing the same outfits, singing the same songs, going through the same motions. Let's all cut her a little slack!
That is all!

P.S. Would we rather all members of the Mac be quietly living amongst the rest of us? Or do you want to still see them on tour and listen to new records? ... That's what I thought. :)

I think you need to draw a hot bath, perk up a hot cup of Sumatran roast and read the lyrics to Rock a Little, in which she provides advice ("If I were you..."), plays the obedient concubine ("I'll take off my cape for you..."), lends a comforting ear ("You can talk to me..."), or gives a big sloppy wet kiss of a thank you ("this is your song..."). Albums and artists come and go, but nothing compares to the warm, gooey, fuzzy goodness of RAL-era Stevie. I hate to break this to you... but that's the same Stevie that people know and love.

When someone referred to her as "Big Mama" all I could think of was the big owl w/a matronly, older sounding voice in The Fox and the Hound...yes, I do have young children, even as old as I am (teenager in their heyday). Stevie is so far from having a matronly voice.

I like calling her Mama. She's a little earth mama too.

I am adding my two cents after reading the opening post and no one else's.

I honestly think this is Stevie at her worst vocally since 1990/91 (In a very different way though)

I was checking out the canadian performances on youtube and i could not take it. She was having a hard time with Stand Back even- there is a real sluggishness. But she is almost 61! So i just accept it.

Of course all of the comments were raves (from people who were actually in the audience as well) but let's get real here...

To me the star of this tour was Lyndsey's guitar. Everything else has been disappointing.

I've not been overwhelmed by her vocals as of late. I'm trying to really like Soundstage - and there are some gems on it - but some of the stuff just makes her sound like she can't be bothered to sing. Having been a very long time devoted fan( late 70"s til now), through the bad and the good.....I have to add for the very 1st time, I AM BECOMING BORED WITH STEVIE!!!....the week of press and exposure was great, but Stevie didn't meet that challenge with anything memorable or exciting....she was soooooo going through the motions and looked bored and old... And even though I think she looked gorgeous on Soundstage....and threw us a few curve balls i.e. "Crash", Circle Dance.....it was still the same ole same ole. She really needs to record again.....all this touring is becoming robotic and boring......AND her lack of enthusiasm shows....even more so with the MAC, she's getting terrible reviews! Someone needs to tell her!@ some one tweet Karen ASAP!!

Stevie for the love of god, please go in the studio!!! And wow us with recordings with the stellar vocal range of "Call on me for Magic" or something new...ANYTHING!!! Don't get me wrong, I liked it, but, for me, the star of the show (for that song) was Waddy. I much prefer the Crystal Visions 'version' of Eo17. There's a pace to it, an urgency I didn't feel with Soundstage.

Now, the Soundstage version of GDW is amazing. That I would want to hear regularly.

We have enough versions of Edge of Seventeen that we can afford to be connoisseurs. I liked the original Edge on "Bella Donna" when I first heard it. Years later, I never thought there could ever be a better cd version of Edge than the one released on "Enchanted."

I did not like Storyteller's Edge. That about killed the show for me. The atmosphere was wrong--it was stilted.

I was amazed at the Melbourne Version on "Crystal Visions." They did the impossible. Who could have imagined adding strings to that song?! There is the sound of almost "thunder" in that version. The other thing that I love is how each element of the band is given a sort of solo moment in the song. The organ playing is wonderful! If you dig piano playing, it's featured, and it's hot! If you like strings, they are there. If you love guitar, it's weaved throughout the piece, and it's striking. Then toss in Stevie's extra words: "She said somewhere deep in the middle of the night, my baby, I think about you," and "I know what it sounds like . . . it sounds like YOU." I think she brings it all home there.

Soundstage is almost a tie with that version. It's really very close. But I'd give Crystal Visions/Live with the Melbourne Symphony the win . . . by a nose. ;)

That's why I don't like it. It makes them sound as if they thought she was wise or comforting, like a big sister or some equally atrocious perspective. I can't stand that widespread view of Stevie, that touchy-feely way of seeing her. It's like when people get back from her concerts & say how "tiny" she is or how "soft" her hands are, or something equally stomach-churning. It makes me think of all the Stevie fanatics I have ever hated.

Ew, I can't stand it. (shudder)

It's intolerable because it's false sentiment. Didn't Lawrence say something like, "Sentiment is the working out on yourself of feelings you haven't really got" ? That's why the "mama" thing is obnoxious, as are "La Nicks" and "Madge." They're jokey, friendly, falsely intimate endearments.

But I really hate 'Linds.' These obsequious nicknames are phony-chummy. The really curious thing is that the fans who use these nicknames the most are typically younger & newer to the Mac fan dodge.

But I'd have to add that, all in all, this business is pretty trivial. I mean, Fleetwood Mac fans are starving in Third World countries even as we speak. Stevie Nicks's footwear is a lot more important than this, too.

I think Linds is a natural truncation of "Lindsey" and I can see doing that, just as some people might call you "Dave" even if you had a keen aversion to that moniker. They think it's "normal" to use that nickname. Same with Chuck, Bob, Bill, etc. I see Linds in the same vain.

Now, with Christine, even if I didn't know she would answer to "Chris" I would call her that, unless I heard she detested it. What I don't like is to have her called Christy or Chrissy. That just sounds like an imposition. It's not an abbreviation the world expects; it's a candied term that I feel you're really taking liberties to bestow without permission. With Stephanie, I'd never say Stevie on my own, if I didn't know that was preferred. I would say "Steph" though. I feel, in general, you shouldn't have a name with 3 syllables in it and not think people are going to shorten it.

Now, while I have one aunt who insists on calling me "Shelly" or "Shelly Bell" I don't normally think that "Michele" needs to be abbreviated or substituted in any way, shape or form.

As for the Macsters, I like to call them various things, the 3 songwriters anyway, but none on an incessant basis.

Listen, if a fan fic writer can't do anything more original than call someone named Lindsey, Linds . . . what's the world coming to?

I think shippers would rather hear him called Angel. In the X-Files world, you say "touchstone" and people are weak in the knees, panting softly. It doesn't take much, but it takes a little more than dropping an "ey" from the hero's name.

oh please! get off the cross, we need the wood.

i never said everyone has to call her "mama." in fact, i rarely call her that. my position in this thread has been "why is it such a big deal what people call her?"

if it just irks you, i can understand that. sh*t happens. i don't, for example, like the russian word for "furniture." it just sounds gross to me.

what i don't understand is the people who think it's disrespectful and offensive. it is ridiculous, overprotective, and extreme to read that much into it.

re: the contrived rationale comment, i wasn't talking about you. but since you're talking about my alleged hypocrisy, can we talk about your narcissism?

i don't see how this has anything to do with either beating down dissenting opinions or open-mindedness. you brought up the "hypocrisy" of the POVs in the racism thread vs.the POVs in this thread, and i see the same sentiment being expressed in both - that many people will dig deep into something small in order to be offended.

how can it be a pile-on when 10 people have said they don't like calling her "mama" and only 5 people have disagreed?

and finally, can we abolish "open-mindedness" from the vernacular? because it really means nothing. you can say that i'm not being open-minded because i don't understand why people take issue with stevie being called "mama." i could say you're not being open minded because you are intolerant of her being called "mama." let's just lump it in with other buzzwords like "misogyny," "oppression," and "offensive" -- words that, due to their abuse in popular discourse, have been drained of any real meaning.

michelej1
04-30-2009, 01:30 AM
Would Stevie then be called Steve? :p

Yes, I have no doubt that there exists some fan fic in which she is called "Steve."

But doesn't it make sense to go for something intimate and rare? Making Joseph, "Joe" instead, just doesn't cut it. So, rudimentary. Instead, try Laura Ingalls Wilder calling her hubby Almanzo, "Manly." Now, the rest of the world might choose "Manny" as a common nickname for him, but "Manly" is hers exclusively. An appellation tailor made for indelicate daydreams.

Names are funny vehicles. Whenever Johnny Carson would call Lauren Bacall "Betty", I felt I was getting a glimpse behind the fame. Same thing when Robert Wagner is called "RJ" in public.

Now, you can do the converse and add panache to the pedestrian, as well. It's always a nice when Mick introduces "Stephanie Lynn Nicks" . The unexpected formality is grand and elevating.

As I told in my Dallas review, Stevie was not the girl I saw in all live videos before. She was more like a senior lady singer, as I have seen other mature singers. But she was very sweet. Come on, she is 60! she can't sing or dance Rhiannon like in the 70s..
Lindsey was the leader of the show, no doubt. But Stevie performed very good, i liked her a lot
