"Computers Ruin Our Kids," Says Stevie Nicks
BY LEE BAINS — APR 13TH 2009 AT 12:43PM

Singer, '70s sex symbol, and supposed spell-caster Steve Nicks has officially come out against computers, according to the AP.

"I believe that computers have taken over the world," Nicks told the AP last week. "I believe that they have in many ways ruined our children. I believe that kids used to go out and play." She continued, saying "I believe that social graces are gone and manners are gone because all people do is sit around and text." Although her extreme Luddite perspective may be admirable, Nicks' long chain of "I believe" statements was enough to make us slightly uneasy.

According to the article, Nicks does not own a cell phone or a computer, largely due -- we'd imagine -- to such devices disturbing her balance of crystalline energies. Apparently, said energies are not vulnerable to lame orchestral synthesizers. [From: AP, via The Huffington Post]

Stevie Nicks Rails Against Computers, Cell Phones: "They've Ruined Our Children"
AP | NEKESA MUMBI MOODY | April 9, 2009 at 09:32 AM

NEW YORK -- Friends who want to get in touch with Stevie Nicks know not to send an e-mail, call on a cell phone, or reach out by text message, because she won't respond.

It's not that she's being rude: Nicks doesn't own a computer or a cell phone. The 60-year-old rock legend, who is currently on tour with Fleetwood Mac, is a proud technophobe.

"I believe that computers have taken over the world. I believe that they have in many ways ruined our children. I believe that kids used to love to go out and play," Nicks says in her famously smoky voice.

"I believe that social graces are gone because manners are gone because all people do is sit around and text. I think it's obnoxious."

Nicks does own an iPod, but she prefers to listen to music -- which includes her new CD, "The Soundstage Sessions" -- on a boombox. (The CD also comes packaged with a DVD.)

Better yet, give her a cassette version and she'll be in musical heaven. "It sounds better and you'd be convinced," she says.

AP: This is your first live project in 22 years. What took so long?

Nicks: I don't really know exactly how that happened. Before I knew it, it was 2007 ... (my) tour was over, and I'm sitting in my house going, "I can't believe I'm sitting here again, and I didn't film this show." So I got on my phone and I called my managers, and I said, "Make some calls, because I need to film this show." I'm very, very proud of it. I'm almost glad that I waited this long to do it, because maybe that's what God wanted me to do.

AP: You say you hope this project is a blueprint for the next generation. Why do you think there's a lack of strong rock acts?

Nicks: Because the music business is in terrible trouble. People are stealing our music. That's all there is to it. In the old days ... they would help you to develop into the artist that they knew you were going to be. In the last 10 years, the record companies don't have the money to do that. I don't know what the answer is to it. The only thing I can say to people is, "Buy music, do not steal music." If you do, you won't have any new music later on.

AP: If you and I were having lunch, and I pulled out my cell phone ...

Nicks: I'm gonna put my hand on your hand and say, "Turn it off, for now. Just give me an hour, of you, I really want an hour of just you, and your heart. I don't want you talking to someone else while we're having lunch." It's love, you know, it's relationships. I don't want love and relationships to be lost, and I feel like that's happening.

AP: Have the nation's economic troubles inspired you musically?

Nicks: Absolutely, I want to go home and write Bob Dylan songs, I want to go write radical, rebellious "let's try to make it better" songs. I'm very affected by everything going on. When I do get finished with this Fleetwood Mac tour, I will absolutely write about the political situation, which I have never done before. I have never actually been very political before, and I'm starting to feel more political every day. So, pretty soon, governor (laughs).

That's her "public" Myspace, which she says is for "people who have never met me in person before." For her own privacy I won't post a link to her "private" one, even though most have it.

Doesn't she look JUST like Stevie in the face???

Wow... I have to admit that there is an uncanny resemblance with the pre-nose job and dental work Stevie. The bone structure is definitely there.

Wow--Jessica is a fire artist? I'd be curious how Aunt Stevie feels about her niece throwing fire around. I agree she does have a strong resemblance to young Stevie. Beautiful!

She is deffinatley a pretty girl. She deffinatley has her nose and mouth. You think that it was her daughter?! LOL!

On another note....I can understand how Stevie feels about cell phones especially. I don't own one either. It's just another bill for me to pay. I get distracted enough as it is in my life, the last thing I need is a cell phone. I thought the world was still in a perfect place before they were even invented. Now it's like, "I can't survive!" I was out to lunch with one of my best friends and she spent the whole time on that damn phone. Cells are rude and should be shut off or put on vibrate when in public places. She kept saying, "I'm sorry...I'm sorry..." I wanted to take the phone away from her and tell whoever it was on the other end... "She'll call you back." But I love her too much to piss her off. I was late arriving the other night at the bar meeting her and my other friends and they were pissed and worried about me. One of her friends says in an sassy tone, "You need to get a cell phone!" I replied, "No I don't ! I don't like them!" What I wanted to say was, "What I need is a friend who will answer her phone even if it's a number she doesn't recognize." Yeah, my friend won't answer her phone if she doesn't know the number. I tried telling her she needs to answer it anyway because what if it's me calling from a pay phone or someone elses phone etc. She's a tough chick to reason with. Sorry for rambling on and on about cell phones. LOL! I can't stand them, I'm sorry. Here in St.Louis, I don't know how people drive and talk on them at the same time. I can't even smoke a cigarette and drive at the same time! LOL! I love computers though. I am on mine everyday. My slow windows 98 computer! LOL! I like it because it gives me something to do in this tiny little box that I live in that I also call home. I love comming on the Ledge here, and making comments, meeting new people and posting stuff. It's a great way to meet people who have the same interests as you. I love it!:wavey:

But she also looks very much like Lori. Which means that Lori and Stevie must look alike. Which means Chris Nicks probably has a thing for his sister:confused:.

She certainly resembles her Aunt a tiny bit but she definitely looks very much like her mother Lori. I find the legwarmers and ballet tutu costumes a little interesting and that certainly was greatly influenced from Aunt Stevie's past costumes:nod:

I wonder what Stevie thinks of her neice's choice or work? It's different! Jessica certainly looks VERY different than that little girl from the magazine interview a few years ago!!! Doesn't even look like the same girl.

I always thought Lori and Stevie sort of looked similar with their permed hair too. Wasn't Lori a stand-in for Stevie in some of the music videos???

"I believe that they have in many ways ruined our children"

I can see why Stevie would say that when her niece looks like....well...I don't know....look at her.

It's a shame because she is gorgeous and resembles Stevie when Stevie was 27. That cute nose.

I'm sure Stevie is disgusted and does not approve of what her niece does - photowise. Look at how Stevie is constantly ranting about leaving "a little bit of mystery" when wearing clothes and never revealing much....I'm sure she would be upset about her niece's look. But she isn't her mom and can't control her.

She's 17? Dressed like this??? Isn't this concidered "child porn" in some states? She's not 18. My mom would have kicked my butt if I wore anything like that at 17

That's exactly the point. She's just a kid. A kid should not be posing and dressing like this. It's actually illegal in some places for minors to pose in a sexual manner & nude, although Jessica isn't nude - she's very close to it.

Anyway, that was my 2 cents. Maybe I'm old fashion like Stevie.

Nah. I'm 19 and think it's pretty distasteful for anyone to pose/dress that way. It's just a young girl expressing herself though I guess.

Exactly. Express yourself. Get it out of the way now and figure out who you are... Point is, this will pass in her life. She's gonna be just fine.

 We've all been there. I had an experimental phase with blue and green metallic lipstick around Jessica's age; needless to say I don't want those pictures to surface!

She does look very like a combination of Lori and Stevie, those are some good genes.

Is anyone else suprised as I am with this statement? Stevie has always been so "safe" and steered clear of making any political statement whether it be musically or in interviews. Everytime she is asked about her work with the troops, she'll say "It doesnt matter if you agree with the decisions that have been made..."
I'm anxious to hear this!

I'm not surprised. She's getting older. I don't think she's so much "played it safe" all these years as she just didn't really give a damn. I would be interested in hearing her political opinions.
