Stevie Nicks has some words for Britney Spears. “You have to pay your dues to be a real rockstar,” she admonishes the pop singer.
In 2004, Rob Sheffield wrote in Rolling Stone, "Stevie Nicks is more than a rock icon; she's the high priestess of her own religion, ruling a world of prancing gypsies, gold-dust princesses, and white-winged doves, all without going anywhere near a sensible shoe."
Nicks tells Extra what she really thinks about today’s pop princess, Britney Spears.
When Penacoli asks how Spears’ rise to fame was different than her journey, Nicks responds, “It's different in that Britney [Spears] did not join a band when she was 18 and play everyday for five hours Monday through Thursday and then play gigs Friday, Saturday and usually Sunday….You have to pay your dues to be a real rockstar.”
Nicks’ new CD/DVD “The Soundstage Sessions: Live in Chicago” is in stores now.

i love that stevie puts this out there~ it is oh so true~
i'm not saying the young female stars of today don't have talented voices or anything~ but they all seem to have been cut from the same cloth~ it seems so many of them just want to get on stage & shake it, not be a true singer/songwriter~ no one has any substance to them~ they are all manufactured as stevie said~ it seems so many of them don't even pick up an instrument either, they just stand there half naked w/ a dozen back up dancer singing song someone else made up~
i always liked the fact that stevie liked vanessa carlton & michelle branch~ two young females that write & play~

michelle branch posed nude for Maxim a few years ago, so I don't know how different she is from britney to be honest. Vanessa on the other hand has never done anything like that.

La Nicks is correct to a point. However, Brittanyt Spears has been working in show business since she was 11 years old and likely before although as an amateur (home videos of local gigs confirms this) - to wit:
Britney Jean Spears (born December 2, 1981) is an American singer and entertainer.
Raised in Kentwood, Louisiana, Spears first appeared on national television in 1992 as a contestant on the Star Search program, and went on to star in Disney Channel's television series The New Mickey Mouse Club from 1993 to 1994. In 1997, Spears signed a recording contract with Jive, releasing her debut album ...Baby One More Time in 1999. The album established her as a pop icon and "bona fide pop phenomenon", credited for influencing the revival of teen pop in the late 1990s.[1] Spears released her sixth studio album Circus on her 27th birthday in December 2008.
Spears is ranked as the eighth best-selling female recording artist in the United States with 32 million sold albums certified by the Recording Industry Association of America and one of the world's best-selling music artists having sold an estimated 85 million records worldwide.[2][3] Spears also holds the title to multiple Guinness World Records.

Note - I do not really like BS ( ) or think she has any true rock and roll talent - but she has paid some dues

Yet, La Nicks has.
I do not really see how posing nude negates your rock and roll dues paid. But, to each their own

The cover of Buckingham Nicks shows her without a top on. She often laments this nude pose and the choices she says she felt pressured to make.

Also and in general, BS never posed nude, she just used sex to sex her "music" and was photographed with her hoo hah hanging out when she tried to get out of a car without proper breeding. I imagine that if the paps ( ) had been around then like they are today, we'd have a few of La Nicks in a compromised position. Just look at how high La Nicks is in some of the pics in the bad pics thread.
Note - I think BS is and carries on like a low rent, skank. But, the paps are always there to catch her even in the very rare time during her crazy years when she did not call them and tell them where she'd be, etc. I reckon she made several million dollars by splitting the pot during that time.

This is my problem with Stevie's constant belittling of Britney. I really think there are very few things Brit's done that Stevie wasn't up to herself in her day- there was just no one there to catch her in the act. And as for paying dues, Stevie may have practiced more often (although I think that's questionable as the dancing performance angle of Britney's talent is something Nicks can probably never understand) for her rock and roll life style, but Miss Spears has paid more dues to celebrity than Stevie ever had to.

And, I do not think La Nicks belittles BS in this sniglet. I think she is noting the differences in their paths and that La Nicks sees herself as a respected writer and singer, unlike BS.

Maybe it's not belittling, but every quote I've heard from Stevie about Britney has had at least a little snark added in. "You've got to pay your dues" implies BS hasn't, but coming from a different time, who is Stevie to make that call? La Nicks is my heart and soul, but Britney is my pop culture obsession....and you know what? Not a small part of either is my love of a train wreck. I just think Nicks has a little more in common with Spears than she would ever deign to admit.

You don't think. I have several demos/outtakes of Britney singing and playing the piano to HER OWN SONGS. Yes, she writes her music. Too bad most of her own songs are not released, because they are quite good. She actually has a whole unreleased album of her own work. It was not 'pop' and hit worthy so it was scrapped by Jive.

That may or may not be true. But, La Nicks is specifically talking about being a rock and roll star inthat quote.
As for BS' personal life shennanigans, I am unsure if La Nicks has ever commented publicly on them. She commented onthe kiss with Madonna, but that was a performance thing. La nicks has also commented on writing your own music because looks fade and having a sense of mystery as opposed to performing in a thong and pasties. But, all that is performance related.

^^^
It's okay and her voice is generic at best. I readily think BS can sing - despite that she made her claim to frame on that pre fab voice she's been hawking for over a decade. Plus, she does not really sing live in concert, or at least that is the scoop. And, in that clip, she is using gimmicky vocal hooks (or at least she tries to) to make herself sound like Aguilara, who has some fantastic pipes even though I am not a huge fan of her use of that gimmicky style of ending most words with ten notes as opposed to one.
In the end, I think BS is an enjoyable act in a polished showcase. I also have more than once danced with wild abandon to her shiitte in some club somewhere. But, she is a far cry even in that clip m(where she sounds good and not pre fab for the most part) from an all out rock and roll concert featuring live vocals of your own work that stands alone as poetry a la EO17, Rhiannon, Landslide, WH (the song), TISL (the song), and many more. On that front,I think most likely would agree BS is not in the same league as La Nicks. La Nicks is more up there with Dylan, Mitchell, Heart, etc. -- most likely would agree BS is not in that league and may even say La Nicks is not either, though the latter is much closer. I think that was La Nicks' point and it is my point. My point is not that BS is not entertaining or that BS is talentless even as a singer.
But and again, to each their own

I don't know why we are even comparing them. Apples and oranges. They both are musically relevant and market themselves to different ears. Stevie took a path that allowed herself to be herself and sing from the heart. The main reason I listen to her is the fact that her music moves me....it means sometime to her and in turn, it means something to me. Each lyric has a meaning, and I can relate to Stevie's words. Britney decided to be a mass production of good hearted songs, songs everyone can enjoy and when listening to them, can take you out of the real world and into fantasy and fun. It works for her. Is it her? I don't think so. I think she's tried to break the image but to no avail. Right now, she choses to accept it to make her a superstar again. She does have songs that move me (Everytime, for example)....but all in all, she's good clean fun. Two totally different people and styles.

I compare them because this thread was about La Nick's statement comparing them.
To me, there is no valid comparison because they are two totally sep. forms of entertainment.

^Hence, the reason why Stevie needs to stop with the BS comments. They are not in the same league. Is she threatened by this wave of popular music? Is she upset about? What's her deal? She just needs to step out of the 70s. She can still do her thing but update it. Embrace the digital age....If she wants to bring back her style of music to the mainstream, then she needs to get that across in some other way than bashing Britney. Doesn't she know Brit is on the upswing now? ha.

I do not think La Nicks feels threatened. I think she answered the question asked and people are trying to make a cat fight out of it  Again, I do not see La Nicks' statements as bashing. She is saying they are different and that La Nicks is a rock and roll star and what it took to get there. BS is a manufactured and very successful pop star, the steps to which were different. La Nicks clearly considers being a rock and roll star superior to a pop star that was prepackaged. I think La Nicks is correct. But, to each their own.:

Well, shaving her head is one of those few things she wouldn't have done:lol:.
But she just told us she didn't mind people seeing through her clothes when she was young, although she does now. So, hmmm. . . There could have been pantyless days once upon a time.

Stevie Nicks lashes out at Britney Spears' rock status
by Stephanie Hermann. Published Mon 06 Apr 2009 12:54, Last updated: 6 Apr 2009
Rock legend Stevie Nicks has lauched a scathing attack on pop babe Britney Spears claiming she doesn't deserve her fame.
The row broke out after music bible Rolling Stone named Britney the 'Queen of Rock and Roll' after her comeback from a nervous breakdown last year.
The infuriated Fleetwood Mac lead singer claims Britney has not paid her dues in the world of Rock and was handed her fame on a plate.
Ageing rocker Stevie, 60, says: "You have to pay your dues to be a real rock star.
"It's different in that Britney did not join a band when she was 18 and practice every day for five hours all week and then play gigs all weekend."

^Well, Britney did spend a year touring malls and was an opening act for awhile, too....so I think she's paid some dues.

THat is what they do. but then again, Forget about HER bieng infuriated?, I AM infuriated? Pop tart spears? "THE QUEEN ON ROCK AND ROLL?" Oh Hell-No. And that gets thrown around waaaaaaay to much anyway, Acouple of days ago i think it was entertainment tonight was calling Tina Turner "the queen of rock and roll". I do not think however britney will be able to be shakin her groove thing at sixty. because that IS what her image is. Pop songs and dancin around in ur bikini. If she does have something else to offer, i whish she would make the change. then maybe the rest of us would be able to like her too, not just a small portion of girls 15-25 and a large portion of gay men. I would like to see her with some substance, then i could respect her more. And not think of her as someone who always has this SERIOUS sense of ENTITLEMENT. Also, I doubt she would have been as self motivated as Stevie was, Stevie didnt have her mom whoring her out to talent search shows and auditions and ect., when she was just a child. THAT is REALLY the reason the world has Britney Spears ; Lyn Spears.

That's actually quote beautiful. Her voice sounds lovely. Weird why she refuses to sing like this on stage and has to lip sync....
Britney doesn't seem like a bad person either. No where as malicious as Madonna anyway.
People do have to remember that for many people, Stevie doesn't have agreat voice either. I know everytime I play a song of her's out loud in our stereo, my sister screams "Turn that goat off now!!!"
I was at a forum the other day, and everyone except for me were bashing Stevie's voice. I just can't believe it. But everyone has their own taste and opinion.
