View Full Version : "Soundstage Sessions" Billboard Chart Debut Predictions

What is your prediction for the debut position of the "Soundstage Sessions" CD on next week's Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart? As a frame of reference, the No. 10 album this week sold 41,000 copies. The No. 20 album sold 26,000 copies. Also keep in mind that this probably includes all of the presales, as well as the 500+ copies she sold at the Union Square Barnes & Noble.

I can't imagine it breaking the top 25. Normally I gobble up everything she and the Mac releases... but I don't think I'll be purchasing this. We've already got like 400 rehashes of Rumours and Bella Donna... I sure as hell don't need another :sorry: .

Ummm, there's only one song from Belladonna and none from Rumours.

Stand Back - The Wild Heart
Crash Into Me - NEW
Sara - Tusk
If Anyone Falls - The Wild Heart
Landslide - The White Album
How Still My Love - Belladonna
Circle Dance - NEW
Fall From Grace - Trouble in Shangri-La
Sorcerer - Trouble in Shangri-La
Beauty and the Beast - The Wild Heart

It will be interesting to see if the BN signing makes a difference. We can compare it to CV.

Michele

I'm not sure if CV is an accurate bellweather:

-Music sales are way down vs. two years ago.
-SS is actually a completely new recording vs. a compilation.
-People may opt to buy the DVD instead of the CD under the false assumption that they are both one and the same.
-The tracklisting of Soundstage is lacking a lot of big hits or well-known songs.
-CV sold as well as it did due to the pent up demand for the official music videos.

I think Stevie should have released the audio CD first and then released the DVD about 3 months later. By releasing both at the same time, I think she is cannibalizing her own sales.

And I do think the B&N signing may have bumped her up at least 2 - 5 positions on the chart- every little bit counts these days.

What I meant is the last thing we need is another packaged career retrospective. It's just absurd for Stevie to have only put out 6 solo albums, but have 2 greatest hits AND a box set, and now a live compilation which is essentially a combo of those 3. Let's get some NEW stuff already!! I can only listen to so many versions of Landslide before hitting the nuthouse...

It doesn't qualify as a compilation album because these are all new recordings, and except for like 2 songs, there's not really any "hits" on the album.

I have no idea what this CD is going to do... I chose top 20, just cause sales are so low for cds, that's it's entirely possible... I can't really look at it objectively at the moment and gauge it - I've been hearing it for so long now.... I think the DVD will do really well on whatever chart they have for DVD's.

Has anyone that has bought from the stores - seen the DVD/CD version that Warner was selling directly? It's packaged as if it were to be sold in a store with the security thing on top, you know that really tough security tape on one end underneath the wrap.... I'm just curious if that version has made it's way out to the stores or if it's just the separate CD and DVD.

The DVD is charting better than the album. Trouble in Shangri La was number for like 3 weeks on Amazon and it only hit number 5. Soundstage Sessions isn't even in the top 20. It's going to be about 100 or lower I think.

Her chance of going gold is the DVD. She only needs to sale 50,000 dvds to do that. Live in Boston DVD did better than Say You Will cd too.

Unfortunately for Stevie many places are only carrying one copy of her DVD. Plus, the promotion is particulary bad for this.

I think the DVD deserves to go Gold. She did a really good job with this.

it's a huge indicator, I've paid attention to it for years, the live album will probably sell around 15,000 the first week AT MOST and maybe 100,000 overall at most. I hope she does that well with it. (A lot of people are sick of her compilations and her aging voice and aren't buying it. However, they still want to see her in concert.) I think Stevie already knows this. Fleetwood Mac's Live in Boston DVD went platinum, Say You Will the album only went gold.

I'm very aware of that. DVDs are also more expensive. Less people buy music DVDs. That's what's really troubling. Her DVD is outselling the CD.

However, A DVD only has to sell 50K to go gold. That is her hope: the DVD. The CD seems like an afterthought to me.

I respectfully disagree. She has done loads of press and they are spending money on ads in major markets. I personally think she should have done Letterman and The View as those are WAY more major than the Fallon show.

For the life of me I will never understand the bookings they do. I get there are scheduling considerations, but they should have thought ahead two months ago and gotten the bookings.

But, people said SYW was poorly marketed when all the evidence was to the contrary (AOL sessions, media, press, etc.)

Completely agree. This package has been promoted extraordinarily well, as was SYW.

Some fans are simply impossible to please- like the geniuses who, say, claim a concert wasn't promoted adequately and, when pressed for suggestions, come up with a marketing plan that roughly costs 10X the gross potential of said concert.

BTW, i'm calling #20-25. She would have to sell between 20-24K copies, and i think she's capable. That would mean her selling 10K less than she did of CV (which sold 34K and was #21 in its debut). She could end up charting in the same position even selling a significantly less amount of albums because of the current state of overall album sales.

She's not singing on any of the interviews and the interviews are really short.

The problem with SYW is that MTV is not going to play a Fleetwood Mac video, and they refused to go country like the Eagles and everyone else who wants to sale records.

She has no band with her. I suppose she could have gotten a new guitarist and done Landslide, but, that would require rehearsal time, etc. Any other song pretty much requires a full on band. So, I see why she is not singing.

The problem with SYW is that MTV is not going to play a Fleetwood Mac video, and they refused to go country like the Eagles and everyone else who wants to sale records.

Actually, MTV would have played it if there had been a hit - they always go to the money. There was no hit because the music was not to the public's liking. But, that is a sep. thing from a lacking of promotion. They promoted the hell out of SYW.

Interestingly, I wounder of FM payed for any of this promotion. I say this because La Nicks is heavily promoting the current and ongoing FM tour in this press junket. I tend to doubt they are, but, she could haved asked for it and been correct.

I don't think SYW was managements fault. It was Stevies and Fleetwood Macs. I think a lot of people didn't like TISL and it did not help SYW. The album didn't gain her many NEW fans. Fleetwood Mac didn't do a video for it either or try to market it to country stations that like Fleetwood Mac.

Rock has been dead since about 2000. These bands need away to stay in the publics mind, especially old bands. The Eagles have succeeded but Fleetwood Mac has not.

It got good reviews from critics, especially Rolling Stone becuase of The Dance. Rolling Stone only gave Bella Donna 3 stars in 1981 and gave TISL 3.5. You would have to be an idiot to think that TISL is anywhere near as good as Bella Donna. They did it because everyone realized her appeal and longevity and Sheryl Crow was on the album.

Her new fans were from the Dance. Because MTV played the hell out of the videos and it sold well. She did not have a hit off that album and many were disappointed. We all wanted her to pull a Tina Turner and she did not.

In the end, unless FM or La Nicks solo has a major hit, the records will sell about where they are and they will make their money from touring, which is well received for the most part. But, the vast majority want the hits from Mirage back. Such is life.

Haven't folks been saying they don't like her voice, all the way back to 1976? Is that really even a factor at this point?

The thing is, a gold album is nothing to sneeze at. Stevie is a middle-aged female singer with a strange voice -- and how many other female singers in her age-group have had gold albums over the past 10 years? Cher certainly. Maybe Bette Midler. But I can't think of any others.

I think I've started many threads on here about Stevie and Fleetwood Mac should give country music a shot.

I will fly to Nashville to the Grand Ole Opry to see Stevie or FM on the show.Any I probably would die on the spot if She was ask to sign on to the show.

I think Stevie's Grampa's dream would be fulfilled to see his grand daughter on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry on a saturday night.

Darius Rucker and Jewel was the latest acts on the show.

Stevie's song "After the glitter fades" was play on the country station in my listening area back in 1982 also Leather and Lace.

Pop to country crossovers,no order of faves.

1 The king Elvis Presley
2 Dan Seals of England Dan and John Ford Coley, R.I.P Dan 1948 to 2009

The 'Live In Boston' dvd/cd package was far, far below a platinum seller.
Other than 'Time' it was Mac's worst selling product in eons. The SoundScan figures for 'Live In Boston' were a total of about 32,000 copies sold, and that was about a year after the release- the exact figures are somewhere here on The Ledge, it had been a question posed in Billboard magazine's Chart Beat column, and the 32,000 copies sold was...eye-opening.

Right, and because it only takes 50,000 discs for a DVD to sell in order to reach platinum status, 32K * 2 = 64K. The sampler CD that came with that was, i.m.o., such a waste of time...there were no songs on there from SYW, and the rest were forgettable. It was a complete afterthought.

Well, with 50,000 copies needed to be sold for a 'gold' DVD, the 32,000 copies of 'Live In Boston' with its 2 dvds would be 64,000 copies, so that's gold- Platinum would need to be 100,000 copies sold.
Also, a comparison to put things in perspective, regarding the commercial success of 'Live In Boston' vs. 'Trouble In Shangri La' which occupy the first 2 pages of this thread:
Rough, but fair estimates- For 32,000 copies of LIB, sold at an average price of $30 - would equal gross sales of $960,000. Less than one million dollars.
For the 'Trouble In Shangri La' cd- which at last count had sold about 650,000 copies- and to be very conservative, an average price of $10 per cd- would equal $6.5 million dollars in gross sales.
So, to the new poster here... (welcome, anyway :)
"Trouble In Shangri La" was by FAR the more successful of the two products, especially factoring in the cost of film for the 'Live In Boston' project, plus all the clearances and packaging, who knows if it made a cent of profit.
I would defer to MacMan or Luke's corrections should I be wrong, they are awesome with the stats in the 'Rumours' threads, and here, but for someone to blindly state that 'Live In Boston' was a platinum 'smash' or words to that effect, and TISL a failure in comparison, is so, so inaccurate it's not funny.
Would you rather have $6.5 million in sales or less than a million? TISL winds hands-down.

I'm going to roll the dice and say it will come in at #27

Hope I'm wrong, but I think it will be her lowest selling album.
I think that it will eventually sell less than 100,000 copies (domestic).
Then the CD will drop like a stone on the charts, Top 100 maybe 3 weeks.
This isn't a comment on the albums quality, but other factors like,
the record industry as a whole, the economy and her age.

I think I saw one 60+ year old in the Billboard Top 40. When next week's
chart comes out maybe Stevie will be that one.

I wonder if Fleetwood Mac would sell the DVD/CD at the concerts?
That would help sales, but I can see Lindsey, Mick and John going
up to Stevie and asking what their percentage is???

It is a sad reality that many people just don't pay for music these days. Sure the true fans will go out and buy the copy of the DVD or the CD or perhaps pay for them on iTunes. However the casual listener, the person with not much money, the person who doesn't care that much, will go straight to rapidshare or a torrent and download a copy. Failing that there are several Russian and East European download sites selling albums for around US$1.

I don't think its that these artists are declining in popularity as much as many people are no longer prepared to pay the money for the album.

Stevie is a middle-aged female singer with a strange voice -- and how many other female singers in her age-group have had gold albums over the past 10 years? Cher certainly. Maybe Bette Midler. But I can't think of any others. All have a huge gay fan contingent. It's interesting.

I wonder if Fleetwood Mac would sell the DVD/CD at the concerts?
That would help sales, but I can see Lindsey, Mick and John going
up to Stevie and asking what their percentage is???

They need to put Blue Again, Gift of Screws and her Soundstage all out there on the merchandise table. I actually think Lindsey has a better chance of selling his product right after people have seen him in an FM concert. That would be the time when they want to experiment more with him, so he might get a few new solo fans out of it.

They do give away Blue Again and GOS in the gift bag for the ILAA package already. I wonder if Stevie's CD/DVD now goes in the bag.

It's 10 tracks from the DVD, but they are produced to sound like studio tracks (with the audience noise completely removed) and they also added additional vocals and instuments in the studio a few months after filming the show.

Well I could be wrong & for Stevie's sake I hope I am but I picked the very last one....the under 40 but in the top 200 --hope I'm saying that right since I can't see the list right now. Even though I just bought it this weekend at Mejiers suprisingly there wasn't many cds left --I got the last one & the dvd's there was only 2 left but it had been out 5 days already. I'm sure Mejiers doesn't get much 'new' stuff coming in....not like they used to anyway. Plus they were selling it at $1.00 less for each one. I thought actually the the cd/dvd thing would've been released like CV cd/dvd set but its not...guess she gets more $$ this way?? (I opted not to buy it at the WB site this time even though I'll miss out on the litho but oh well....at least I don't have to pay the postage either......)
I guess I'd be surprised if it cracks the Top 40 really....cd or dvd.....Just because even if theres a couple of 'new' versions....to me its still the same songs....yes 'live' but still nothing totally & completely 'NEW'.....thats not a slam it is what it is.....Now maybe if it was some really 'NEW' songs than that would be great. I was surprised Mejiers had them cause they 'never' got any of Lindsey's stuff in so I still have to get GOS and his cd/dvd thing yet....I'm behind really........I will just haven't yet......
Now as far as the Eagles going country.....well they did start out as 'country/rock' band....really to me more country...they really didn't get rocking til Hotel California...IMO....so its not a 'stretch' for them to do country.....now FMac or Stevie totally country would be interesting.....but not sure how it would be recieved of either of them. Who knows. I think Stevie could do it better than Mac IMO.
To me as a long time Stevie fan....TISL doesn't rank 'up there' as my favortie by her......it'll not ever be BD or WH....those are my 2 favorites followed by Mirror than TISL than RAL than SA.....of the comps....hard I'd have CV's just for the DVD alone with all the video's & esp the BD video stuff....not so much for the cd. Than Enchanted than TS....well....I won't comment on the 'new' live set til I've listend to it all and watched the full dvd......I'm sure there good and yes its great to have a 'live' cd......but yes call me selfish if you want I wish maybe it had been the full setload of songs...instead of just 10.....cds can hold lots of music.....(I have some Russian cds--not Stevie or Mac mind you--but they are mp3 cds and there are full lps too. I never knew you could put that much on cds ever. I have one on the Eagles and its there whole catalog to GH2--Same for Sarah Brightman...I have 2 cds mp3 all her musice to a point I think hers goes to 2002 or something. WOW)......Just think if we had all of Stevie's Masters to her solo stuff etc....like that wow....There are no Stevie /Mac cds like this yet cause I've asked. I'll keep checking though......

*Edit: There was one SYW song on there, Come, but...yawn.

Your wrong. It takes 100,000 dvds to reach platinum status in video sales. It only takes 50,000 to reach gold status.

So what did this thing end up selling? Or will numbers not be available until it's been a full week?

I'm not surprised.

Oh, so you don't like it either? ;)

Seriously, I want to like it but I don't. :sorry: Something's just not right to my ears - maybe it's the overdubs, or it's overproduced or something. Landslide & B&tB are particularly disappointing to me. I wouldn't play it for my friends who aren't into Stevie.

The Blu-Ray underwhelmed me at first too, but it's grown on me & definitely has its moments. Maybe I will change my mind about the CD too - time will tell.

Ha. and I'm not surprised that you are not surprised that Paula is not surprised.

It will be in Top 150.

^^^

FM did an entire concert set for the AOL sessions and then released the songs SYW and Peacekeeper as videos

The problems were IMO, they sounded like crap live on several high profile public shows, like Leno and GMA (or was it Today?) .

I also disagree with you and think TISL was very well received and got her many new fans. i base this on my concert experiences, which were filled with new fans and the critics warm reception of TISL.

It was the Today show - the first in their "Summer Concert Series" in '03. Remember how it was freezing & we never thought they'd play outside? They did sound awful, I remember being upset because I didn't feel that the performances represented the band very well & that casual fans would think they sucked.

Oh and just a question (because I haven't been keeping up with Stevie stuff), why do a lot of sites list this CD as being released on Jan 13th?

The release dates have been moved around several times, must be an old listing. The Blu-Ray was released weeks ago. I stopped trying to keep track of when any of it was being released.

Does anyone really think that Stevie expects the live CD to do well? It seems to me that the live CD was an afterthought. She's really promoting the DVD here and I think it is her true hope for gold status.

It does to me too. It's odd. I can't put my finger on it. I'm honestly not sure why they bothered releasing a CD, unless they actually heard/read us fans saying that we'd love a good-quality CD of a live show instead of muffled bootlegs.

All have a huge gay fan contingent. It's interesting.

It is an interesting phenomena. In college I did a lot of marketing, planning, and buying power surveys and such. Gay men have a LOT more disposable income than almost any other demographic (and are willing to spend it) because many are what economists and planners call DINKs (Dual Income No Kids). The fact that women like Stevie, Bette, Cher, Madonna, and many others have big gay followings isn't really a mystery. Gay men love strong, yet classy women who survive adversity. If Stevie would market herself differently (ie- maybe a dance themed album, do prominent BIG gay fundraisers, make club appearances, and such) she could totally tap into that pot of money better.

There was a definite misconception about the CD. Unless someone was up on all the Stevie news (like we are) or read the press release, most people probably figured that the CD was just 10 songs ripped directly from the DVD, so they didn't buy the CD because they could rip the songs themselves and save $15. This will definitely hurt the sales of the CD...i think they should have done a better job of differentiating the 2 by putting different cover art on the CD.

Don't forget Jessica Simpson.

Its a long-standing cliche in the music business that once you've exhausted all possibilities and used up all your goodwill trying to make it in your own style of music, you can always "go country".

It's also laughed about pretty heavily around here too... (Only no one is readily going to admit it.)

I thought it was pretty damn funny when Darius walked into CRS (Country Radio Seminar) a couple of weeks ago wearing the same shirt he wears in his latest music video. I was like "Does that man only have three 'country' shirts to wear?"

It will be interesting to see if the BN signing makes a difference. We can compare it to CV.

Michele

I dont think we can compare it w/ CV because of the signing...BUT I believe that a large majority of copies sold that day would NOT have been sold otherwise... I mean, I would not have bought either one most likely, and I know a LOT of people there already had pre-ordered their copy so they were forced to buy an additional copy.

In all she sold around 800 copies of each that day and that doesnt make a huge difference. Had she gone on a whirlwind couple week long multi-city tour and done the same thing it would have added up, but not the difference btwn Gold and Platinum I dont think

Well, the final results are in from HitsDailyDouble, and Stevie did not chart in the top 50. The Decemberists were number 50, having sold 11,567, so if Stevie sold just around 11,000 copies, she missed the top 50 by not too much.

This should come as no surpise to anyone. The album was very quietly released. Outside of a couple of TV appearences, the album has gotten practically zero promotion. This isn't 1981 anymore kids, Stevie's chart topping days are long behind her.

Right...although i think she promoted the hell out of it for having only a short time off of the FM tour. Also, a lot of the albums in the top 50 are albums that were released months and months ago...Taylor Shift's 2006 and 2008 albums are still on there, and so are Kanye West, Pink, Britney Spears and Adele, all of whom released their albums in 2008.

It is not a retrospective...a retrospective is catagorized as a compilation of songs recorded at different periods of time...this album was recorded all at the same time and is not considered a retrospective. We know you don't really care for the CD, but please don't diminish it and its integrity just to prove your point.

Agreed. And Please. How still my love, Circle Dance, Crash, Beauty and the beast, If anyone falls, and Fall from grace live IN NO WAY classify as " oh just the same ol stuff we always get." The Cd is wonderful. And yes, the DVD is AMAZING, and yes, The promotion of this should be waaaaaaaaaaaay better than it is/was. THey should sell Stevies, Buckinghams, and Micks new stuff at the merch stands at concerts.

There are about 15 new albums in the Top 50, Stevie's is one of the lower selling albums of the new releases from last week. I think it did very well considering that it is not a new album per se, it's a "live" album which unless you're on a current hit making roll and are able to slip it in after a HUGE album, never do that well on the charts. I don't think the label expected to by a top ten seller. Sadly it will probably drop down to the lower regions of the top 100 next week. These days you only get one week to make your impact.

Hey Aaron, I can't agree more!! I do feel, for the time she had, she DID do some good promotion work- the B & N signing, Jimmy Fallon show (altho I wish it would have been on a more MAJOR show like David Letterman or The Ellen show) and Today show.. It's definitely NOT classified as "the same old stuff" by any means, and you are SOOOOO right there buddy!

I thought I was the only one who thought Prince was a bit overrated :D

No.. I used to really love him, and have seen him in concert several times, but when he changed his name.. he lost me..

I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE Prince! Everything up to, and maybe including , The Gold Experience (1994? 95?) is a prized part of my cd collection. But after that. . . . .

Maybe I'm wrong about the new cd, but I think he just burned out all of his creativity and relevance, but good on him for releasing just about a great album every year for a decade-and-a-half.

I'm just surprised that after another decade-and-a-half of mediocre stuff he's still selling albums.

Of course, I think the once GREAT Elvis Costello should have retired in 1986.

It's funny how some artists remain interesting and others don't.

But like I said: maybe I'm wrong about Prince. . .

Diana Krall "Quiet Nights" enters at #3!!!
That gives me a little faith that there are

That album is getting horrible reviews. I doubt it stays there for long.
