Ever the rock gypsy, Stevie Nicks preps a new live album and DVD while touring with Fleetwood Mac
By John Russell
Hx.com (http://hx.com/web/8840)
With over 30 years of touring under her leather and lace belt, Stevie Nicks is a bona fide rock 創 roll road dog. But this month痴 The Soundstage Sessions羊eleased along with her new Live in Chicago DVD擁s Nicks very first live album as a solo artist. Currently on tour with Fleetwood Mac, the luminous 60-year-old gypsy chatted with HX about life on the road with the boys in the band and why she痴 never been to Night of a Thousand Stevies.
HX: For someone who tours as much as you do, it痴 surprising that this is your first live solo album.
Stevie Nicks: I filmed my show in 1985 at Red Rocks in Boulder, Colarodo. And from then on, everything happened and happened and happened. Fleetwood Mac filmed in 1997 for The Dance and we filmed again in 2007 for Say You Will and somewhere in all of those years, even though I was touring in between all of those things, it just got lost, the idea to film my show. And when I finished touring in 2007, I just called my manager and said 鏑isten, I can稚 move on until I film this show. It started in Vegas with four shows at Celine Dion痴 theater at the Colliseum at Caesar痴. It痴 like, you just couldn稚 take your little rock 地 roll band in there! I had to build that big world around that huge stage. So we went back to all our film and videos and we built a world. So PBS called and they said they would love to do it and we went to Chicago and filmed it at the Soundstage studios. It was just great, because, you know, you could take a little time between each song, so you could actually wear all the really great outfits that sometimes in a real show you just don稚 have time to make those kind of changes. So I got to really do all the little images that I致e created over the years. And it was really important to me to do that. First, because I think it痴 such a spectacular show, and second, because the next time I go out on my own, I wanna do something really different. I wanna find some different songs in my repertoire and I wanna do maybe a little unplugged thing. Maybe I値l play piano. But I couldn稚 do that until this baby of mine was, you know, grown up, dressed and pushed out of the nest.
I heard that you were hesitant to play 鉄ara for the taping because you consider it an exclusive Fleetwood Mac song. Are there others? What makes them sacred to Fleetwood Mac?
Well, had I known that Fleetwood Mac was going out on October 5, in 2007, I wouldn稚 have filmed 鉄ara. It痴 fun to keep a few songs exclusive. Even though 敵old Dust Woman, 泥reams, 迭hiannon迫those are pretty darn exclusive Fleetwood Mac songs! But I致e been doing them [solo] since 1982. So it痴 kinda like, those songs just exist in all sets.
How do you decide which songs you put in a set list?
It really seems to have a lot to do with the time and what you池e doing and how everybody痴 feeling. Some songs make great records and don稚 transfer to stage very well. You know, you love one song one day and the next you want to put it away. When you have as many songs as we have between my solo work and Fleetwood Mac痴 work you have a lot to choose from.
What do you think touring with Fleetwood Mac would be like if one of the guys was gay?
If one of us had been gay, I don稚 think it would have mattered. I think it would have been fine. The love and respect that we have for each other would certainly have overridden any way that anyone would have felt about somebody being gay. I think we would have all been absolutely fine with that. It痴 really about the music at that point.
What痴 the worst practical joke they致e ever played on you?
Well in the very beginning, I think it was the end of the Rumours tour, in Hawaii, somebody filled an entire hotel room with chickens and mud and chicken feed. And it was kind of a disaster. It was supposed to be really funny, but it really wasn稚 very funny! [Laughs] That kind of stuff really doesn稚 happen that much anymore. You have to remember everything else that was happening at that point. Everybody was drinking a lot, so when everybody痴 goofed out and high you could say, 鏑et痴 get a bunch of chickens and put them in the hotel room! And not even think about the fact that you池e gonna spend $30,000 to clean up the room and get the chickens back to their home!
You致e had some successful remixes of your early hits in the past few years. Did you ever think that 30 years later the gay boys would still be out at the clubs dancing to those songs?
You know, I always felt that 鉄tand Back was such a great dance song that I was not surprised. It痴 been dance-mixed a million times! It痴 funny with my songs. Deep Dish, when they did 泥reams, I think they never in a million years thought I would say, 徹h, I知 so down with doing a new vocal! And they loved it so much that they just mixed it and mixed it and mixed it. And I did finally, laughingly say, 添ou guys have got to move on! I have many songs. If you want to do dance mixes I will just get the tapes out and you can just take them!
So, Night of a Thousand Stevies is coming up in May, and there are die-hard fans who are convinced that you showed up one year in disguise.
I didn稚. I did not. But you know what? Sometimes I think I should just lie and say I did! The fact is that I致e never been to a Night of a Thousand Stevies, not because I wouldn稚 like to come. I would love to go. But I知 always working. And I知 usually working on something that I can稚 get out of. And I live on the other side of the country. I would love to attend Night of a Thousand Stevies. And what I壇 like to do is come in total Stevie disguise. Which of course nobody could do better than me! And one year, watch out all you people, I will be there! And you won稚 know, so watch everything you say, because I could be lurking! [Laughs]
Does it ever hit you that you池e a cultural icon?
It probably doesn稚. Because, I play the gigs, I go back to the hotel. I don稚 get to go out to clubs. I don稚 even get to go out to dinner! So, when you ask me if I知 aware of my iconic status擁t痴 like hearing the PA in the venue. I知 aware because I can hear it, but I don稚 get to be a part of it that often. And I知 sorry about that, because I would like to be more a part of it, and dig on it more. And I don稚 really get to do that. But I will tell you I am very, very honored. I知 very honored about Night of a Thousand Stevies. I think it痴 precious. And it goes straight to my heart. I wish I could come there every year. I know I知 a rock 地 roll star, but I work very hard. I知 the worker bee. I don稚 really get to enjoy the honey comb very much.
So when can we expect some new material from you?
Well, when this whole Fleetwood Mac thing is done, I think I知 gonna do another record. I致e been told by a lot of people that, 典he music business is in such terrible shape, maybe you just shouldn稚 do another record. And I really took that to heart. Only in the last couple of months have I really started thinking, 展ell you know what? I don稚 even care if it doesn稚 sell any records. I need to go back into that creative world. I need to go back into the studio and sit at the piano and pull out all my thousands of pages of what I think is very good poetry, and write some new really beautiful songs and throw them out there. If people like them, great. If they don稚, that痴 okay too. I need to do it for myself. So, are you going to hear something from me at some point? Yes you are.
The Soundstage Sessions and Live in Chicago will be released Mar. 31. Catch Stevie痴 in-store appearance at Barnes and Noble Union Square, 33 E 17th St, also on Mar. 31 at 7pm.

Thanks for posting this... this is a fantastic interview! Not one mention of Lindsey! I'm glad she acknowledges her rabid fandom among teh gehs. :wavey:
But, oh, please, Mama! Who you tryin' a kid? You had your opportunity to do something different during your last same ol', same ol' Tour-for-the-sake-of-touring-Tour in 2008. Soundstage was already in the can by then, so it's not like there was any excuse to not move on.
Regarding her change of heart on making albums... I wonder what happened over the past couple of months... perhaps the complete evaporation of her retirement nest egg?
Okay... call me a royal beotch. I'm just in that kinda mood today.

This is EXACTLY what i always thought was discouraging Stevie from doing a follow-up to TISL...the higher up's at the label put the idea in her head that a new album would not sell, and she listened. It's about time she spoke up for herself and does what she wants to do.

Then why did they sign her to a multi-album deal back in 2000? If anything I'd bet the labels are begging for her to do something. Anything. It gives them more stuff to sell- they may as well make up for less volume with more titles.

I don't think Stevie would have ANY problem moving between 250,00-500,000 units.
What I find interesting is, after all the talk of a standards album, and a Country album, and a guy's covers album......she's back to original material....which is fine by me!
Now, if it could just be produced by Rick Rubin!

If they were begging her to release something like TISL, she would have done it by now. The work she does is presented to the label and they make the decision about whether or not to release it, so they hold the power. I'm sure they steered her in the direction of doing the '08 summer tour instead of going into the studio after the CV album/tour was done in August 2007. Although, i'm glad things worked out as they did, because then we wouldn't be getting the Soundstage CD/DVD tomorrow!

Ehh, it's ok for a compilation album. I expect the Soundstage CD to eventually go gold, and i'm sure a future album that Stevie releases will definitely go gold.
But TISL sold only something like 640K or thereabouts since 2001. And that was back when the music industry was still kinda healthy. I think we can take any numbers from 8 years ago and pretty much halve them for today. So I think it would be considered a "hit" if she sells 350K or so.
There's no way in heck that Soundstage is going to go gold. The biggest thing working against her is the fact that a version of this has been broadcast and DVR'd/taped/youtubed/torrented, etc. ad nauseum since it was broadcast last July. Secondly, many, many fans will assume that this is simply the audio track pulled from the DVD, so they will just buy the DVD only. Thirdly, there are only a couple of bonafide "hits" on the CD; the rest are album cuts or minor radio hits. Fourthly, since she is on tour with FM (and will likely not do a solo tour behind it), she is unable to do extensive promotion. Fifthly... admittedly there is nothing on this set that is particularly earth-shattering. Sure, some of the arrangements have been tweaked, and the addition of strings to "Landslide" is pretty, but overall it's a very conservative set- nothing like Eric Clapton's re-worked "Layla" which was an improbable smash hit for him back in the day. I do hope I'm wrong, but I just feel like so many casual and diehard fans will sit this one out.

This was a great interview. Finally, we got an interviewer who really has a knowledgable fan perspective of her and her career. It's very encouraging to hear, at the very least, her talk about doing an album and doing something different with her stage show.
I'm really glad to see that she seems to be reinspired, and wants to be creative for it's own sake -- and not be hindered by sales figures and record executives. She's very beholdened to to very antiquated, stale record company dynamic; but granted, that's all she's ever known.
A lot of today's newer artists have a very different perspective of the business, and as such, have much more control of their music and more free-will of what they do. Stevie could do so much more if she signed with an innovative independant company. I'm sure they would love to have her and be more enthusiastic and supportive about her ideas, projects and endeavours.
From the interview, I gather that her current "representatives" are doing everything they can to keep her resting on on her laurels and milk the hell out of her past, than have her go forward with anything artistic that doesn't suit their profit margins.

i've always been a Stevie fan mostly
but i love Lindsey's mind set
to me, it 's like he doesn't give a **** if a record makes 10million sales or whatever
he's doing what he wants to be doing for the sake of doing it
not coz someone is making him or he's doing it for any other reason than his home
Mama is always too much about being a pleaser and holding back on doing her own thing/releasing xyz
i wish some of him would rub off on her
like someone said in this thread
Stevie might see his last 2 CDs and being his creative outlet
and look how energized he is
Stevie needs her groove back

. . . and strand, i hope your right about last year being the last of the same old-same old, but I'll believe it when i see it ;-)
I think we will never really see a day when she does not perform at least a few of her hits. But, look at the Soundstage DVD, she included Crash, Circle Dance, and Rock and Roll. I get that they have been part of her set for two years, but that was a reach for her. Plus, on the last tour, she did that Seeger song and she and Henley did SYWBARRS. Then, Red River Valley on CI. So, she adds things here and there will keeping the core stuff.
All of this to me suggests that she wants to do something new. I could be wrong, but it seems to me that she is game for it, esp. now that she is contractually free to do whatever she wants and she likely is worth enough millions of dollars (likely well over 50) not to care about the money it could make.
Also and randomly, I think the Soundstage DVD was to have more branching out, but the friends she called on never showed.
Finally, whatever she does do next, she needs to sing the shiitte out of it (see Red River Valley, the current live Storms, and Call on Me for Magic) instead of using this BS monotone voice that is her safety zone.

I definitely see your point, but i'm sure this will sell more than Crystal Visions because Soundstage offers something new to the casual fan (new recordings and unfamiliar songs like HSML and BATB). I think most "die-hards" were ready to sit this one out, but once they heard and saw the finished project, they became rejuvinated about it. Also, the FM tour itself actually adds to the promotion because the media has been covering this tour since the whole Sheryl Crow fall-out. And, Stevie's promotion for this project is more consistant; she's got the B&N signing, Fallon, Today Show, and Lifeboat event all in the same week; when she was promoting CV, she went on the Today Show, and then a whole month went by until she went on Ellen, so the promo appearances were fairly sparse and inconsistant. I guess we'll just have to wait for the reception it gets tomorrow and thru the rest of this week.

Maybe I値l play piano. But I couldn稚 do that until this baby of mine was, you know, grown up, dressed and pushed out of the nest.
I get this and I actually believe it. If she means it the way I am interpreting what she's saying, I totally get it. I think that she is finally ready to shed some of her persona or at least change it now, at 60 years old. I think it's hard for people (women in particular) to "give up" what they have been for so many years and now she is ready to give us another side of her. I'm totally excited about that if it's true.
And now I am even more determined than ever to get my ass to NYC for NOTS one year. She'll show up someday...
;)

Stevie Nicks: I filmed my show in 1985 at Red Rocks in Boulder, Colarodo.
It was 1986 and Red Rocks is in Morrison, a good 45 minutes south of Boulder. :sorry: But I'm sure the long nets of white cloud her memory from this time.
First, because I think it痴 such a spectacular show, and second, because the next time I go out on my own, I wanna do something really different. I wanna find some different songs in my repertoire and I wanna do maybe a little unplugged thing. Maybe I値l play piano.
Please let this be real and not another flight of fancy.

I don't think it was as much the folks at WBR as people like, oh, Don Henley.
Care to elaborate?

Then why did they sign her to a multi-album deal back in 2000? If anything I'd bet the labels are begging for her to do something. Anything. It gives them more stuff to sell- they may as well make up for less volume with more titles.
I think Live In Chicago wraps up that deal.

And there's that recent interview where Stevie said she was a bit bored with her solo set, so I do think that several signs point to her wanting to do a little something new. Not a complete sea change, but still something fresh.

Stevie's 'Soundstage' aired at such odd hours (4am, 5am) that I actually think it was only the 'diehard' fans like us who even saw the broadcasts. I think much of the general public or casual fans may have missed Stevie's Soundstage on PBS, or only saw one week and not the other, since her concert was split up and not in sequence when it aired in 2 separate weeks-- that may all work well for people who see the dvd and cd in stores and remember a very late night when they caught 'part' of Stevie's Soundstage. I believe it will sell well, and better than 'Crystal Visions'-- 'CV' was oddly shipped to stores, the cd-dvd package was comparatively much harder to find than the single cd, and like others have said, there wasn't a ton of promotion. I think the label really got behind this release, finally, after so many postponements. But, we're all used to that in Stevieland.
With Stevie's tv appearances this coming week, the past month of her being on the road with Mac, the Chris Isaak tv show, quite a lot of press- i think she'll be seeing some big returns. I hope so.
Wrong thread, but it seems I'm the only one disappointed with the litho. It's too small. What sucks more is that there was NO care taken in protecting the lithograph when it was processed; with the litho directly against the inside grainy cardboard mailer, with not so much as a flimsy half-cent sleeve to protect it, like you'd get when buying a sheet of stamps at the post office. Mine has some surface scratches above her right eye, and from her right breast down to what would be her calf area, there's water damage or something, and there's a scratch in what would be her cleavage area, and little white marks on the right side of the lithograph. Also 2 white marks on the left side of her top-hat. I think I need to e-mail customer service but what are they going to do? I bet nothing. Really, do not put a lithograph against cardboard with no protection of a sleeve, tissue paper, envelope- something. I'm pissed. "Was I just a fool" to hold the litho up to the light? Then under a light?
I suppose non-glare glass and a black touch-up pen can help a lot, or maybe i should look for HIGH-glare glass???

There's only been one since TISL...
Actually, 3 of her last 4 releases have either been "Greatest Hits" or a compilation of some sort: Enchanted, Divine, TISL, Crystal Visions, so I can certainly understand someone saying they are sick of her putting out GH packages. And if you really think LIC is going to outsell CV, then you are delusional.

Well. Those with delusional set-lists with crossed-out "Sisters" shouldn't throw delusional stones, sorry to say.
Really, why throw words like 'delusional' around when several people or more may feel that that the 'Live In Chicago' DVD or 'The Soundstage Sessions' cd might sell more than the 34,000 copies CV did in week one, or go on to become a bigger-seller overall? The possibility exists. Or, cross it out, if it seems too unlikely.

Wait a minute, guys - I just realized she's just going to do the Enchanted tour again. :p I believe her Storytellers piano Rhiannon was around that time as well.
Not that I wouldn't go see it - I missed that tour. :distress:

Its a good interview....but well in away I'm not surprised Stevie knows how to work and interviewer after 'all' these yrs. She can tell some tall tales.....heck she won't recall what she said tomorrow. So the next interview will probably be much different from this one. It all sounds so nice & neat and its wrapped up all so beautifully don't ya think. She says all those things as fans we want to hear....'new' songs....'new' LP.....new this...new that......I'm sorry......personally it all sounds too good to be true to me. Didn't she state that she was working on the 'Rhiannon movie for the uptenth time.....over 30 yrs now.....she was gonna do a duets lp than a standards cd....than she wasn't gonna record anything cause as fans 'we steal' things from her.....so as much as I'd 'LOVE' to believe this ....and all of it ......I'll have this wait & see attitude. Not a bad one .....just a 'believe it when I see it' in front of me........She has sooooooooo much she could release cd/dvd /photos/outtakes/posters/shirts/buttons......etc.....the world could be HER oyster if she wants......but that is the true question/really does Stevie know WHAT she wants???.......I'm really not so sure even after this 'wonderful' interview......I'm skeptical right now. It all just sounds too good to be totally true to me......sorry, I don't mean to be a downer....just realistic thats all.....that way there is no disappointment......but that is IMO ......no offence anyone......just some thoughts.......

[QUOTE=MacMan;810707]One in a Thousand
Ever the rock gypsy, Stevie Nicks preps a new live album and DVD while touring with Fleetwood Mac
By John Russell
Hx.com (http://hx.com/web/8840)
First, because I think it痴 such a spectacular show, and second, because the next time I go out on my own, I wanna do something really different. I wanna find some different songs in my repertoire and I wanna do maybe a little unplugged thing. Maybe I値l play piano.
[Laughs]
Well, will wonders never cease? Finally, she got that stupid motion out of her head that it's not a good idea for her to put out new material. I hope she really means it. I just told my friend the same thing, she needs to forget about commercial sales and just do what she does, which is write for herself and the rest will take care of itself.
It's good to hear her acknowledge the gay fans. But for her sake, I hope she doesn't ever show up at NOTS because I think she'd be appalled. LOL. I was there one year and once was enough for me. I hope no one takes offense, but between the smoke inhalation, the horrible bathrooms, and the ugly drag queens, it was quite an experience. Cool concept though.

You must have gone a long, long time ago because smoking has been banned in NYC bars since 2003 or thereabouts. And the venue has moved uptown to the Hiro Ballroom, which is pretty nice. As for the ugly drag queens... well... unfortunately there's nothing you can do about that.  Ain't that right, Strandie? :wavey:

Well, two outta three ain't bad. LOL. I don't even remember what year it was. I'd have to do some digging but it was definitely still at Mother when I went. I could probably put up with the drag queens if there was no smoke and a decent place to pee.

As of May 08, it sold 215,000 copies, and 34,000 in its first week.
Latest data for sales on Crystal Visions - from Billboards Catalog Album Sales:
Week Ending: 10/19/2008 - it sold = 2,319
Week Ending: 10/26/2008 - it sold = 1,814
Week Ending: 11/02/2008 - it sold = 1,549
Accumulated total up to November 2, 2008 = 241,269
Keep in mind this doesn't differentiate between the dvd/cd combo and the straight cd version - all sales are combined.
