I'm taking a cinema class this semester, and yesterday (our first class) we watched Vertigo.

I forgot how much I love Alfred Hitchcock (and his MacGuffins) movies!

Although, being the mature audience that we were, in the scene where Jimmy Stewart pours a frazzled Kim Novak (who just had a terrible nightmare) a shot of brandy and says, "Here, take this. It's just like medicine." -- the entire 400+ audience busted out laughing.

I. LOVE. VERTIGO. I think its my favorite Hitchcock film and quite possibly one of my favorite movies ever.

I do love Vertigo. I taught on a Hitchcock course before and this was one of films that really grabbed students attention. I have to say that I prefer Rear Window though, but it's a tough choice!

Omgosh. I wanna take a Hitchcock course! That sounds awesome.
Yes, Rear Window is another great one.

I saw that North By Northwest was just released on Blu-ray in November, so I need to pick that up. I read in a technology magazine that the transfer is brilliant and one of the best!

I. LOVE. VERTIGO. I think its my favorite Hitchcock film and quite possibly one of my favorite movies ever.

I put it on the middle-to-lower end of Hitchcock movies . . . but all that pathology has made it very very popular with contemporary critics, thus its reputation. Compared to The Birds, Psycho, Shadow of a Doubt, Notorious, Strangers on a Train, Rear Window, North by Northwest, Marnie, somebodystopme, it's just kinda ... dull. Compared to most movies, it's a masterpiece, though.

Gamer
Horrible, horrible, horrible movie. I can't imagine anyone
liking this movie unless you're so totally into gaming that
you've lost sense of reality.

Gamer was terrific. I love love love what Neveldine-Taylor are doing. Their "video game" aesthetic (see the first Crank's post-credits revelation) is actually a rather avantgarde form of satire. They are investigating what Flannery O'Connor would call our "gnostic" culture (a spirit-flesh binary/hiearchy) by emphasizing/subverting the desecration of the flesh in our violent and pornographic pop culture (which includes video games). My personal favorite moment in Gamer is when the film's young gamer returns to his virtual reality gaming room (in the future, the computer screen is displayed on all walls of the room). The room is full of im's and webcams saying: "F--- You!" I thought to myself: THAT is the internet--encapsulated in one image!!! i.e. that's vital filmmaking

The Road

I was afraid to watch this movie, because Cormac McCarthy is one of my all-time favorite authors & I wasn't sure how they were going to pull this off.

I guess they did okay, considering that The Road is a rather special book, but they had to cut out a scene from the book that I think is rather pivotal and sums up what McCarthy was trying to say. Unfortunate, but understandable considering the nature of the scene. Also, they expanded the role of the Woman into a whole character almost, with the bones of a backstory, which I thought was unnecessary, but I guess Charlize Theron was bored that week or something.

I was pleased to see, however, that some of McCarthy's most beautiful lines were preserved in the film, particularly when the Man says of the Boy, "If he is not the word of god, then god never spoke."

I wanted to see this, but it's not showing in my area anymore. It was here a week. I wondered how it would transfer to film.... What scene did they cut? I think my favorite scene of the book is the one with "Ely," the old man.

Oh, and Vertigo is awesome... in my top 10 films of all time. Love Rear Window, too.

Adam.
An interesting movie about someone who
suffers from Asperger's syndrome. Not your
typical Hollywood romance movie.

I know the movie states he has Asperger's, but the portrayal is clearly of someone who's full blown autistic.

Sadly, I've fallen behind as well, thanks to Facebook.

I watched Peyton Place the movie - it was ghastly.

I also tried to watch A Farewell to Arms. Apparently I've reached the end of my ability to tolerate watching streaming movies on my laptop because I couldn't get through it. Could have something to do with being interrupted by Facebook alerts! So I ordered a Roku which will arrive next week and I should be back to my old movie-watching self, only it will be from the comfort of my recliner and not my desk!

This Is It
Hard to criticize a dress rehearsal, but with
all the praise about this movie I expected better.
No close ups of course, and no moon walk! Well,
maybe a step or two. I thought the most telling
part was when Michael made the excuse of saving
his voice at one point in the movie. One would
imagine that the excuse was for AEG the concert
promoter. If their representatives were present
(or were going to see the video) I'm sure they
would have been worried about their investment.
It does leave you wondering what might have been.

Not a movie, but just finished watching season 3 of The Tudors on DVD.

Show is flagrantly historically inaccurate, but I don't care because the dude they have playing Charles Brandon is sex on a stick (http://hotcelebs.today.com/files/2009/02/henrycavillcb.jpg). Every time he walks into frame, I end up doing that slack-jawed Homer Simpson drooling thing.

Mmmm chainmail. (http://images2.fanpop.com/images/photos/4700000/The-Tudors-Season-3-henry-cavill-4714553-967-1396.jpg)

Well it's dead middle of winter and I got a Roku installed, so I've gone from 1 movie a week to like 6...

The Apartment: Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine 1960 - Really funny movie with a cute story line of a guy who "sublets" his apartment to the guys at work in a feeble attempt to get ahead. Really liked this movie.

Georgy Girl: Young Lynn Redgrave plays an "overweight" social outcast type young gal who ends up with two guys vying for her charms. A very cheeky British comedy filmed in 1966. I've always enjoyed watching this movie simply because Lynn Redgrave's outcast type of character portrayal.

Set it Off: 1996 Queen Latifah, Vivica Fox, Jada Pinkett - girl thugs get tired of corporate BS and take to robbing banks. They all end up shot dead except Jada. Kinda sad.

Vertigo: Hitchcock's 1958 with James Stewart and Kim Novak. I had a hard time getting through this one this time.. probably because I've been battling a virus and streaming is more comfortable from the couch.

A Farewell to Arms: Still sitting out there, half-viewed. Guess I'm just not that into it.

This is It: I love watching and listening to Michael. You either love it or hate it... that's all.

Yep, I saved you two hours of your life.

And on with the show......

Across The Hall
Another Brittany Murphy movie, it was pretty decent actually.

Two Lovers
Isn't this the movie that Joaquin Phoenix was promoting on
Letterman when he had his "fake" breakdown? I really enjoyed
this movie.

My One And Only
Though Renee Zellweger looked like she was sucking on lemons
during most of this movie, it was worth watching. George Hamilton's
childhood story....so they say.

I watched this with my eleven year old daughter who (obviously) had never seen it. What a great feel good movie - shot in two weeks with a total budget of $250,000 - it won Sidney portier his first oscar. Heart warming, funny poignant - they really don't make them like that anymore.

The Gary Cooper version?! It's not Borzage's best film, but Borzage is in my top ten greatest alltime filmmakers. It's very much worth seeing. The ending! Of course, I've never seen it on TV (only on the big screen), so I don't know how well it's visual power translates to the small screen.

Anyway, it's better than the book.

OH. And check out the Diane Keaton movie Because I Said So and the way that movie utilizes that great GREAT orgasm scene from A Farewell To Arms.

Amelia. Awful, awful, awful. I can't believe I was actually counting down the time and rooting for her plane would go into the water. How in the hell can one of the most important, strong, independent, passionate, accomplished women of the 20th Century be portrayed as this sappy, insipid, whining, dull, victimized woman? The only truly good thing about the whole flick was the fact it was beautifully shot, and the accents were enjoyable. Photography, sets, costumes, locations, etc were phenomenal... but not enough to save this very, very poor film.

Amelie (French film) -- usually I'm close minded to reading English subtitles for over two hours (I mean it really does suck), but this movie was better than I thought it was going to be.

Phoebe In Wonderland. This one really knocked my socks off. I'm amazed it didn't win any awards, or garner better reviews. It was gorgeous to watch, takes you through about every emotion (occasionally, at the same time!), and actually educates you too. There are so many themes and messages interwoven throughout it... it was a beautiful, beautiful film.

Bonneville: Stunning cinematography. Otherwise, this one fell flat. Even heavyweight actors such as Kathy Bates couldn't overcome their character's wooden, one dimensional dialogue. The whole thing seemed all too familiar... and you pretty much knew exactly what was going to happen, and even what each character was going to say next. Regardless, I enjoyed seeing this movie if for no other reason than it was beautiful to watch. I've been pretty much every place this movie was shot at, and it was a wonderful trip down memory lane.

Subtitles can completely ruin the movie especially if they aren't accurate. I remember a seen in One Missed Call where this girl is with a group of her friends and they are bothering her about this guy and the subtitles show her saying "Why would I have a boyfriend?" and other things that don't fit what is actually going on or just sounds like bad english lol.. Overdubs are usually terrible anyway because it just doesn't look right and can sometimes make a serious scene seem comedic..

Kung Fu Hustle:
I've seen this movie about 5 times...i still love it

Bird on a Wire

Saw the newest Werner Herzog movie last week, The Bad Lieutenant, thought it was great, probably one of the most "perfect" movies I've see in a while.. That said, only the best directors can get a decent performance out of Nic Cage! I think he's a terrible actor, but the greats know how to use him. Haven't seen him deliever such a strange, interesting role since David Lynch's Wild At Heart. My uncle always tells me to check out Adaptation.. I've heard good things, and I'll prob get around to it.. but the thought of watching Nicholas Cage in a movie thats not attatched to a filmmaker I already enjoy/follow..:sorry:

Since I installed the Roku digital player, I don't watch anything but Netflix movies. It would take a lot of time to list all the ones I've watched here, so I'll post when I see one that's exceptionally good or exceptionally stinky.

I'll start with the exceptionally good movie:
Clint Eastwood starred in, directed and produced 2008's "Gran Torino." It's been a long time since a movie made a tear run down my face. I really loved this movie. Eastwood found a way to parlay Dirty Harry into old age and he did it with grace and style, as always. Dude is 79 years old now. I'll be just as sad when he passes as I was when Paul Newman passed.

The exceptionally stinky movies was Jim Carey in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." I was multi=tasking while watching this movie, which isn't a good sign and it didn't make it any easier for me to follow the weirdness that was this movie. Guess I'm not a fan of Jim's darker comedies, though I did love The Mask and Ace Ventura.

^It's a shame you didn't like Eternal Sunshine. I think it's an absolutely brilliant film and is one of my all-time favorites.

It's a bit of a misnomer to call it a comedy though, it's much more of a romance in reverse.

Just wanted to chime in and say I really did not like The Hangover. I must be getting old.

Don't get me wrong, I love Old School... Animal House... Road Trip... and some of those other slapstick movies... but when I was watching The Hangover... i felt it was just a bunch of crude stuff strung together that tried to resemble a movie. i didn't care about any of the characters, or really find them all that funny.

Oh man, The Hunger. Haven't seen it in years, but now I wanna dig it out and watch it, just for the sheer amount of amazing contained therein - you get Bowie, Catherine Deneuve, Cliff De Young, Susan Sarandon, Bauhaus, and even Willem Dafoe all wrapped up in one spectacularly mediocre but glamorous looking vampire flick. A+!

Classic film. Style over substance, but worth every moment watching.

Starring Kurt Russell in the title role. This 1979 movie about
Mr. Presley is the best of all that have been made about him.
There's a few timeline mistakes here and there, but overall a
very good film.

When it premiered in '79 on ABC TV, it went up against the
classics "Gone With The Wind" and "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's

Angels & Demons: What an awful, gory, violent turd trying to masquerade itself as an intellectual thriller.

Onegin: Beautiful cinematography... rare to see a period piece set in Russia that has NOTHING to do with the revolution or communism.

The Remains Of The Day: I love my period movies. This one was especially subtle... you have to appreciate that sort of film to like this one. It's about a British butler who works for a Nazi sympathizer in the '30s and '40s.

Prince Of Tides: I don't care what anybody says... I really liked this one, and especially enjoyed Streisand... and I don't even like her!

Pan's Labyrinth: I was kinda disappointed by this one... I guess it was hyped too much. And it was very violent too... I'm not a big fan of violence. I watch movies and listen to music to escape the ugliness of the world... not relive it.

The Wishing Tree: I was immediately turned off by this one because it was set in the Carolina Lowcountry and filmed in freaking CANADA! Decent enough little story, tho.

It really was a wonderful movie. Anthony Hopkins character reminds me so much of one of my best friends... just shuffling through the motions of life, doing what is expected of him and more, never stopping to realize his own life is passing him by at lightning speed. That his allegiances are completely misplaced. That he has no true opinions of his own. Doesn't know true love. I fear my friend won't even realize it before his time is gone, though... unlike Hopkins character in the movie.

Never seen the movie but the novel (by Kazuo Ishiguro) is awesome. I've read three of his (Artist of a Floating World and Never Let Me Go, as well) and he's definitely interesting.... not quite obsessed enough with the endless capabilities of language for me to really dig him, though.

So I mentioned The Ghost Writer (which was awesome, go see it)... but the night before that, I watched an Israeli film called For My Father. It's a really provacative film that takes an interesting stance on Palestinian/Jewish relations. I'm really passionate about the conflict (as in don't get me started.... The September Issue I'll watch a documentary on anything... and this is proof! This film follows the creation of the largest magazine ever published... the September issue of Vogue. I've never, ever been into fashion (anyone here who's seen pictures of me can verify that!), but after being handcuffed and forced to watch The Devil Wears Prada, I at least had newfound respect for it. The documentary is worth watching for Anna Wintour's (Editor of Vogue) opening dialogue alone. She says some surprisingly spot-on and sobering things just within the first 3 minutes. Between those two films, I at least finally get why fashion is important, and how it affects absolutely everybody who buys clothing, period. It's also very interesting seeing all the faces of who are responsible for fashion... actually seems to be a pretty small group of people, and a good deal don't look how I'd expected them to (for instance, there are a lot of older people in the fashion world, a lot who don't dress fashionably themselves, etc). If you are me and just like documentaries, period, you'll enjoy this one... it's done exceedingly well, is very well paced, it's revealing, educating, and fun.

Gosford Park: I originally saw this one when it first came out about 10 years ago, and turned it off after an hour and a half of NOTHING happening other than a bunch of snooty people mumbling unintelligibly about one another. I definitely like it more now that I'm older... somehow at 19 I didn't appreciate subtleties :p. And it doesn't hurt I now have surround sound so I can actually hear the veiled insults which are endlessly cast back and forth. Maggie Smith is the only thing really worth watching this one for in my opinion... she was impossibly aloof, and brilliant. I still think with more development, this could have been a wholly better picture.

Brideshead Revisited: Seems I'm watching a lot of English period films lately. This one was exceptional... it finishes so far off from where it starts, ends up having a wholly different message than you'd ever guess. Beautiful film, in every sense. Very profound, and thought provoking. Definitely one of the best films I've seen in quite some time.

'Coast To Coast'- Judy Davis and Richard Dreyfuss, both very good, I liked the movie, which originally aired on Showtime maybe 6 years ago. Good acting, good dialogue, very talky, very good. A brief documentary of the making of the movie is very brief, and notable because supporting actress Selma Blair twice misuses the word dysfunctional-- the first time she notes the 'dafunction' of the family, the second time she talks about how as an actor, it is more interesting to portray a 'dafunctional' character. I was shocked. I was born in the Czech Republic and had my share of blunders speaking, years ago, what's her excuse? She's very good as the daughter, though. Sinks her teeth right into the 'dafunction'. ( I like Judy Davis a lot, she still seems a 'tad' on her Judy Garland trip in this role, a remark also noted when she played Nancy Reagan in a movie soon after her Garland performance. Whatever, she's highly watchable and comes across as an intelligent, master-class actor).
'Without Love'- Tracy and Hepburn with a terrific Lucille Ball in a small role that should have been larger. She plays Hepburn's friend. In one scene, Kate takes a phone call, walks outside, gets into her car and drives away, leaving her good friend alone by a back kitchen door, without so much as a goodbye, a funny continuity flub. Ball shows up about 45 minutes later in the film for a couple of other small scenes, with Keenan Wynne, who is very good. I'm not familiar with his other films, but know the 'name', he had a good presence and I'd be curious to see his other work. Considered one of Tracy & Hepburn's weaker collaborations, 'Without Love' still has plenty of great dialogue and the leads are excellent, Hepburn has a speech early on about the death of her husband that is an acting wonder, lovely but romanticized, showing whimsy, joy, sadness and finally fury at Tracy's cruel remark about her hanging onto a ghost. I think even those who may not like Kate would have to find her performance in that scene simply amazing, it displays such range. Historically, she has, at times, been over-rated, but man, she had technique, great acting. Now, I finally also appreciate the artistry of Tracy, it took me a long time. 'Without Love' is from a Hepburn box set currently half-price at Amazon, the only other film I've watched from it this week was 'Undercurrent'- directed by Vincente Minnelli, who had such stylized (gorgeous) sets and attention to detail, technically, in all of his films. There's always as much to watch around and behind the actors in his films, he knew how to 'dress' a scene, a set, a film. 'Undercurrent', however, quite stinks. Hepburn's one trip into film noir, released in 1946, it can't compare to film noir classics like 'Double Indemnity' or 'The Postman Rings Twice', both of which are great. 'Undercurrent' is just pretty lame.

By the way if anyone's curious about it, it's based on a novel from 1955 called The Body Snatchers by someone named Jack Finney. The original film was released in 1956 and starred someone named Kevin McCarthy. There's many interpretations of the story, for example a warning about the spread of Communism; but also it could be about the anti-Communist paranoia that was going on back then. ("Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party"; the "blacklisting" of supposed Communists in Hollywood, etc.)

("Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party"; the "blacklisting" of supposed Communists in Hollywood, etc.)

i will say that if some other actress besides Miley had played the main character, Ronnie, it would have easily made it my favorite movie. The most i've ever cried in a theater before..i recommend it!

I watched The Blind Side, all but the last 45 minutes because I fell asleep on the floor. A great movie really but I must've been tired after being up all that day so I need to finish watching it. I was thinking blonde hair wasn't working on Sandra Bullock. She reminded me of Britney Spears' mother or something. I don't know. Others said Kathie Lee.

I just rewatched the 1978 version of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" starring Donald Sutherland. First saw it when I was around 13 or so.

....... :)

It also had Leonard Nimoy in it, as well as Jeff Goldblum in his first movie role. (Or at least an extremely early one.)

I like this version better than the Nicolle Kidman version. It's very well done, i.m.o.

How To Train Your Dragon-What a great movie!!! Kid's movies are the only movies I actually pay to go see at the theater anymore. This is such a great movie, it completely stomps Where The Wild Things Are. I took my little brother and got so into the storyline and characters that I wanted to watch it again haha :o. I would definitely recommend seeing this because I truly thought it was incredible, it is such a tear jerker and that is saying a lot coming from someone who hasn't cried in a long time.

Scariest f'g movie ever... . . . . .

The older actress in the movie is especially scary.
There's rumors that back when she was younger,
she used to rip young men's hearts out and eat them
for breakfast. .... ;)
Her most-dangerous weapon was her Greta Garbo Standoff Sighs...

Actually, there were no puppets used in the 1981 version of Clash of The Titans, it was all stop motion animation and it was the last feature film for which Ray Harryhausen created the special effects for. It should also be noted here on The Ledge, that Mick Fleetwood's sister, Susan Fleetwood, played the role of Athena in the film.

Just watch Public Enemies on blu-ray. Pretty good film.

1.'The African Queen' - Bogart and Hepburn-- they are good, he won a Best Actor Oscar as 'Charlie' in this film, but I hate the way the movie is underscored, musically-there are unintentionally bad, melodramatic and too-loud musical interludes that are utilized to 'tell you' what you are 'supposed' to feel in the upcoming scene, in the coming moments...it was a technique that was used typically in 70's tv melodramas, where the musical score was almost a character in 'Charlies Angels', 'Kojak' and such tv shows - screechy violins, or 'dum-dum-dum' suspense music loops, and such. To see, and hear, this used so blatantly in a John Huston movie really surprised me and really ups the cheesy factor, of which I was expecting none.
--$40ish, amazon, com, deluxe edition with lobby cards and a Hepburn 'making of' softbound book, and other stuff (film cells)

2.'Michael Clayton'- on sale, crazy cheap at Best Buy last week, 3.99. Seems very good but I haven't finished it yet. I usually like George Clooney, and the price was right.
Next, I'd like to hunt down whatever the name was of that football movie set in the 1930s that came and went a cpl years ago, the film which made him quietly quit The Writers Guild when they didn't allow him a screenwriting credit he seemed to have deserved.
Did anyone know (I didn't!) that if you ever dare to quit The Writers Guild (of North America, I believe, is the organization's full-name)---- that you may NEVER be re-admitted as a member?! That seems soooo wrong to me, like if you dare to dispute them, and have good reasons and quietly resign, as GC did, that you may never rejoin.

3. Almost finishing up, finally, with The Paul Newman Tribute Collection, about $50 at Costco around Christmas, " a collection of 13 of his best films on dvd, accompanied by a bee-autiful 136 Page Book" to quote (with spelling liberties taken) from the back of the box set. Enjoyed 'The Verdict', 'The Hustler' and 'From The Terrace' the most, maybe. Still have yet to view 'Quintet' and 'The Towering Inferno'- the latter which I'm curious to see because of Faye Dunaway and a name-heavy 'A-List' early '70s cast. Somehow I expect a lot of cheesy, melodramatic music in it, though!

Untraceable- it was pretty good. It was a little graphic for my taste though.

Vantage Point- I saw it when it first came out and loved it. Then I rented it again. Still good. Very predictable though.

Deep Blue Sea- everyone dies in this movie (well all but 2 of the main characters). It was funny. I'm not sure if it was meant to be, but I got a good chuckle out of it.

It's Complicated- I love everything Meryl does. I found this charming and hilarious. I loved the pot smoking scene :)

Domestic Disturbance- John Travolta and Vince Vaugh are in this movie. I'm still watching it right now. Its ok so far.

The Recruit- I loved this! Colin Farrel is hot :D

Most of this movie was filmed in and immediately around where I was living at the time. The filming for the dramatic climax sequence on the bridge kept me from getting any sleep for at least four nights (damned floodlights).

The studio also built a couple very realistic facades in a vacant lot and against an abandoned building- so realistic that- since I had just moved to the neighborhood- I had to reacclimate myself in the neighborhood after the film crew left town!

That said... not a bad film. Quite accurate in its portrayal of Portland (WAY more than, say, "Mr. Brooks". What is it about Portland and serial killers?)

Alice in Wonderland- Typical Tim Burton strangeness, but surprisingly good

Inglorious Basterds- Netflix took a few months to send it to me, and if it wasn't for that, i would've sent it back after the first half hour. Far too long, very boring (save for a few funny Brad Pitt scenes), too much of it in German and French (the fact that the subtitles were small and in yellow didn't help too), and just an all-around stupid movie

Two nights ago, watched Little Children, with Kate Winslet (love her), based on the novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta. Enjoyed the book when I read it a few years ago, and the film was a fair adaptation.

Just got done watching Savage Grace, with Julianne Moore (love her, too), about the murder of Barbara Baekeland by her son, Antony. I found this OnDemand, and remembered hearing about it when it was screened at Cannes. I have something of a fascination with true crime books and films, so was pleased to see it OnDemand. Disturbing movie based on an even more disturbing story - Baekeland was an unhinged wealthy socialite that allegedly began an affair with her son in order to "cure him" of his homosexuality. Her son was also mentally unstable, allegedly suffering from schizophrenia, and I guess the whole thing with dear old mom pushed him over the edge, because he stabbed and killed her. Moore was brilliant in it, as usual - she is SO good at playing unhinged types (see also Magnolia - she absolutely breaks my heart in that movie).

For anyone with Charter for cable (and maybe other providers), the Sundance Channel is running a boatload of ASIA EXTREME flicks on OnDemand right now, with quite a few Korean films and yay - a couple of my boy Takashi Miike's films, Ichi the Killer and One Missed Call.

So I just got done re-watching One Missed Call since I haven't seen it in a while. Has anyone else seen this movie?

Ichi's man with the Glasgow Smile is awesome, but I think One Missed Call is underrated. It often gets bad reviews that I don't think it truly deserves. Yes, it's very commercial, and yes, it's obvious that Miike had to do some catering to the producers, but I think a lot of it flies right over the heads of people that aren't really familiar with Miike's special brand of awesome. Because despite all of that, the film still definitely has Miike's personal stamp alllllll over it, making what might otherwise be a standard j-horror "grudge" flick (you know the ones - the creepy long-haired angry dead chick things getting revenge on the living after their horrible deaths) into a subtle commentary on the alienation of youth, child abuse, and the media's voracious appetite for the pain of others at any cost. There's also a lot of interesting commentary playing with the idea that we are so extremely reliant on modern communication technology now that it might be taking over our lives or ruining them. I bet Stevie would agree.

I'm just sayin.

So if you have OnDemand and it's running the Sundance ASIA EXTREME stuff, definitely give some of them a go, particularly the Miike offerings. Cos he's da man.

I saw Eat Pray Love in the theatres over the weekend. I am not sure what compelled me to see this, considering I am not a Julia Roberts fan and haven't read the book. (See the film affirmed my decision). Barf. What a waste of two hours. Julia is the same as always, and even did her patented "crying Julia voice" FIVE minutes into the film.

On the plus side, Richard Jenkins gave a nice performance in a limited role. "Dreams" is featured on the soundtrack, and the placement of "Harvest Moon" was genius.

It only just showed up on my OnDemand here a couple of weeks ago. But yeah, Miike is awesome. Whenever I introduce him to someone unfamiliar with his work, I always start with Imprint - I think it's the one that manages to showcase why he is so damn brilliant while still remaining accessible enough to someone unfamiliar with his work.

I'm pretty sure the fetuses had a hell of a lot more to do with Showtime banning Imprint than the torture scene did, though.

Oh, and Yumi's mom in One Missed Call is Miss Blue Hair's mom in Imprint - I like when Miike uses actors repeatedly. Because I am a nerd. ;)

I'll watch anything with Morgan Freeman in it. And, if there ever was a role that suits Morgan Freeman, Nelson Mandela is IT!

There was another movie that I watched about this kid who inherited (??) like 10,000 bucks, and he friggin announced it to this whole crowd at a train station (he didn't mean to) that he was carrying it. So these two thieves were escorting him on the train and throughout the whole ride all the thieves tried to still the money....

Ginger Snaps - Adolescent but it's one of my favourite, Indie chique movies. I think most women could relate to the themes covered in this movie, or at least the symbolism lol (Don't recall ever barking at the moon during my monthly lol).

Into The Wild - When I saw this movie I seriously considered fleeing into the woods. It is in fact still somewhat of a dream of mine, to live in the woods away from society and surround myself with the beauty of nature and life simplified.

The Science Of Sleep - WTF? Waste of £3. My head actually hurts from the amount of scratching involved. Maybe it's alot more simple than I could comprehend, because all I understood it as was an overblown egotrip of a movie that thought itself better than it was.

Since I've been on a bit of a "permanent vacation" lately, I have had lots of time to catch up on watching movies/documentaries...

The Cove - A shocking but tragic documentary about the dolphin industry in Japan and one man's crusade to end it. Definitely worth checking out!

The Lovely Bones - Definitely one of the most overhyped movies in recent memory. I think the movie was absurd and implausible on every level; there are some elements of the plot that are just impossible to overcome. The one saving grace is Stanley Tucci. I love him. He is in practically every movie these days, good or bad, and he can make a bad movie into a not-so-bad movie.

A Town Called Panic - An over-the-top, fun claymation movie from France involving the antics of a cowboy, an indian and a horse that live together. It's so absurd that you can't help but laugh at it.

Einaym Pkuhot (Eyes Wide Open) - Perhaps one of the best movies I have seen in years. It's about a married orthodox Jewish man taking over his late father's butcher shop in the most orthodox neighborhood in Jerusalem, where he falls in love with his new (male) apprentice. You can kind of liken it to the Israeli Brokeback Mountain, but it is much subtler and more tenuous as it unfolds within the dark cloaks of the secretive orthodox Jewish world. There is little dialogue (in Hebrew), so much of the story is conveyed through expression and body language. Perhaps that's why I find it all so haunting...

Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City - Okay, this is technically a mini-series that was broadcast on PBS in 1993, but if you haven't seen it or heard of it, you MUST watch it!!! You have no excuse not to watch it since you can watch the entire six hours online here for free:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106148/videogallery/content_type-Full%20Episode

I hadn't watched this in 15 years, but once I started watching it again, I got sucked right back in- through all six hours in one sitting. This is simply the best thing ever made for the small screen. Ever.

Armistead Maupin's Further Tales of the City - As the name implies, it is the sequel mini-series to More Tales of the City, which was the sequel to Tales of the City. I watched More Tales... on Showtime eons ago but never got around to watching this one. All I can say is... meh. I still really liked it because I believe anything starring Laura Linney is worthwhile. But it really lacks the cohesiveness, quirkiness and chemistry of the original Tales. It's a shame that they didn't get around to making more mini-series from the Tales of the City books immediately; now all of the original actors are way too old to play their characters today.

Kinsey - I really liked this!

Whatever Works - I believe this is Woody Allen's most recent movie which starred Larry David instead of Woody Allen, even though he basically played Woody's character. It's amazing that after all these years and after all these movies, Woody can take the same basic premise and make it hilarious and relevant over and over again. One of the funniest Woody Allen movies in years.

Black Dynamite - It's a modern take on 1970s Blacksploitation movies... and it didn't involve any of the Wayans brothers surprisingly! Okay, Tommy Davidson makes an appearance... Anyway, I really liked it... it masterfully plays the balancing act of paying homage yet poking fun at the genre. It's absurd and over-the-top... but they're just sincere enough to prevent the whole thing from being a one-dimensional parody.

Vegetarian - A bizarre movie from Korea about a woman who has a nightmare and suddenly only eats vegetables. Hmmm... okay... But then for some reason she also develops a sexual fetish for flowers and her brother-in-law is oh so willing to help feed into this fetish. It's not for everyone... but it is definitely one of the stranger movies I've seen.

Metropia - A bizarre animated science fiction movie set in 2024 Europe where, after the great financial collapse, the continent has been unified physically via a single underground train network called "The Metro." It's a dark and brooding movie with some strange plot twists. I liked it, but I also found it rather dull in places. The number one thing that irked me was that all of the characters spoke English with American accents... including the main character who is supposed to be living in Sweden!

Watch On The Rhine, 1943 Best Actor Academy Award winner Paul Lukas, with Bette Davis and Lucile Watson. Really excellent, takes it's own sweet time, so it's not fast-moving, but it's an engrossing story about the fight against Nazi Germany and an excellent study of several different European cultures with an old-money English-American mother (Watson) chewing the scenery in an appealing way.
Adam's Rib, 1951, Tracy and Hepburn and Judy Holiday, in a great movie, witty and ahead of its time with an Oscar-nominated Screenplay by Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin. I wonder if Hepburn's characters name 'Amanda Bonner' was a slightly dirty joke that got past censors, along with Tom Bonner's comment gifting her with a new hat- "A great hat" she says, - he replies: "for the great head". The movie was directed by George Cukor who was responsible for some of the best movie classics ever made, way back when.
There's a not-so-closeted gay but supposedly straight but not (!) character infatuated with Amanda, and Spencer Tracy gets in a few digs at his effete manner. Cukor was openly gay in the 30s and likely enjoyed getting over on the Hays Office, and the film is really funny, still, and holds up.
It occurs to me that the title, 'Adam's Rib' might have been considered an audience grabber because of the previous year's smash 'All About Eve' -- Bette Davis' big comeback- So, the following year there was an 'Adam' movie which gave Hepburn a big hit that she was in need of, at the time. Maybe an "Adam" movie following "Eve" was just a co-incidence, maybe not.
1940's movies are always my favorites. Though 'Eve' was in '50 and 'Adam's' in '51, they still have a residual touch of the 40's style of filmmaking that was soon gone as the decade progressed.
Besides the superior character studies that vintage films offer, with amazing dialogue and performance-driven stories (versus mili-second camera cuts with zillions of senses-numbing action special effects, as seen in the past 20 years)-- if you ever need ideas about how to furnish rooms and have a classic and classy looking home, there's nothing as good to absorb as the Warner Brothers and MGM films of the 30s and 40s. The sets in themselves are fascinating to observe and learn from. There are great tables, lots of mirrors, -angularly shaped, amazing furniture, chaises, art deco and Asian touches, grand staircases, small accent pieces, gorgeous lamps not unlike the 'blue lamp' favored by one certain Ledge subject- there's so much artistry in the sets, and so much to take in all of the old classics.
If I can't sleep tonight, it will be 'Double Indemnity' from 1944, perhaps.
I haven't noticed many other 'classic film' lovers in this thread- but should anyone ever need recommendations, I own more than 100 films from the 1930s and 1940s. Perhaps more than that, with all the box sets. 'Baby Doll' from 1932 w Stanwyck- wow. Excellent, and not really dated.
The TCM website message boards also have a wealth of informed viewers who can tell you just about anything you'd want to know about the truly great years of Hollywood filmmaking. I think most everyone here, though, would rather not go back some 70 years in what they choose to watch, but you really would be surprised at how excellent many of the movies are if you haven't watched many.

^^^ or 4 posts above, not just the small excerpt above, but all of it was great to read, Hejira. 'Eynam Pkutoh' especially sounds really worth investing the time in to watch. I still have not seen 'Brokeback Mountain' but this sounds like it could be more socially and culturally rewarding than 'BM' which I'd heard enough about from people I respected to know I wasn't going to feel uplifted by watching a negative depiction of what could have been a positive, life-affirming film. I was curious to see the peformances in it, which I'm sure are excellent but I knew the story's outcome, and didn't want to support the film's ulitmately negative premise, though I know the director is brilliant. 'Eyes Wide Open' (easier to type) seems like it will be more of something I'd enjoy, than another account of a gay guy destined for promiscuity and death or hiding behind a wife while really in love with a man. Hmm, guess I figured out why I haven't seen it!
"More Tales" --as you wrote, really couldn't compare to the first 'Tales of The City'- the grandmother brothel owner was kind of too painfully homely to ever really let your eyes not hurt watching her, though her acting was fine, she was just too freaky. The second actor to play 'Bear' -in 'More Tales' - was likeable enough, I guess, but the actor in the first 'Tales' really seemed to be missed, by everyone I knew and in every review I read, at the time.
What stands out now, besides how Laura Linney showed such ripe talent so long before she went mainstream and had the Oscar nominations, is how brave it was of Thomas Gibson to take on some of the male-on-male scenes he played as the bisexual married to a woman man. I respect his talent even more now, because there was no 'Harry Hamlin stigma' for him afterwards. He just has worked steadily ever since 'Tales,' refusing to believe or accept that portraying homosexual or bisexual or, really, maybe just a homo-erotic character should leave him unemployable for long stretches. He's remained a working actor ever since. Hamlin had a promising film career way, way back (I remember 'King of The Mountain' fondly, but vaguely) then along came 'Making Love' and there went his film career. Hamlin didn't even put up a fight, but surfaced nearly a decade later on 'LA Law' but didn't really fulfill the promise of what his career could have been. Gibson either has more talent or more balls and just wouldn't accept being dismissed. The talent may be it . I'm not a big 'CSI' watcher, at all, I think I have seen it twice-- but I caught an episode months ago and Thomas Gibson was Oscar-caliber, even, in his performance, and didn't get an Emmy nominaton. His character was tracking down a elderly male child molester, of boys, 2 of whom now were in their 40s, and rescuing a kidnapped child and dealing with the mass-murdering son of the rapist.
Gibson was unbelievably good in really complex scenes with layers and layers of "reserve"- I guess it would be called. So much behind the eyes, and under the surface, as well as right there about to explode, but not exploding. He really has considerable range as an actor, and maybe an inner strength that wouldn't let him accept he'd be forever typecast after 'Tales'. It's like he wouldn't give in to it, as perhaps Hamlin and Michael Onktean did give in to it, accepting that they were labeled as the stars of 'that gay movie'- Gibson cruises a bathhouse wearing just a towel and has implied sex scenes with men in 'Tales', Now 50-ish, his acting seems stronger than ever. Harry Hamlin's on a reality show with that peculiar wife of his. Good job.
I liked the 'Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman' references in 'Tales Of The City', too.
To me, 'MHMH' is an example of television that is on the level of 'Tales'-- Youtube has a clip of Louise Lasser in what Norman Lear called 'the greatest performance ever given by an actress in the history of television'-- its a very long scene where 'Mary' has a nervous breakdown while on The David Susskind Show, and by the end of the clip, it does seem that Lasser took television acting to an entirely new level- she's brilliant. That very episode isn't even available on DVD, and there doesn't seem to be any followup dvd releases beyond the MHMH dvd that's been out for years .
Suddenly feeling nostalgic for the 7os, between 'Tales Of The City' and 'MHMH.'
Will track down the movie of the Israeli duo Hejira mentioned. It sounds promising, even if one of the guys is married. It happens.

Well, if you're looking for something "uplifting," "Eyes Wide Open" is not that movie. It is brutally frank in its depiction of the orthodox society, but it does raise some interesting philosophical questions about the role of man on earth and whether it is his prerogative to indulge in earthly pleasures per the Jewish Code. Maybe it's because of living in NYC and knowing lots of Jewish people throughout my life, but I have always found the Jewish customs/traditions to be incredibly fascinating and enigmatic. As such, this movie was just as much a cultural odyssey for me as well as a tale of forbidden love. And forbidden love is forbidden love- whether gay or straight. And we all know how these kinds of stories end... :distress:

The trailer is a little bit sensationalized compared to the understated, langorous, moody tone of the movie, but you get the gist...

I don't think Thomas Gibson was exactly a household name back then either, so I'm not sure if one could call him "brave" for taking on the Beauchamp Day role; any struggling actor would have jumped at the chance. And it's not like he was humping every man walking by- he was "straight" for 95% of the series and wasn't even shown actively doing it with a guy. And as for Harry Hamlin, I think he faded into obscurity for two reasons- he couldn't act for sh*t and his looks hit the wall very rapidly and suddenly about 15 years ago. Nobody from LA Law has gone on to any major success, with maybe the exception of Blair Underwood, who continues to get lots of work (and he sold his soul to the devil or something because he looks exactly the same as he did over 20 years ago).

It happens.

I will have to check out Mary Hartman on youtube! I think I was just a little bit too young to really understand that show back when it was on. I remember thinking it was really weird and boring. I suspect I would totally love it now.

Well, after the Lord Voldemort twitter account kept posting things like -

I can't stop watching Mean Girls. It's such a brilliant movie, it does everything right. I think it's Lindsey Lohan's ONLY good movie. It's so totally quotable too.

That is so fetch.

Droopy Dog.

Ah... perhaps... but Droopy was not diagnosed as such officially. I would say he was more likely experiencing the negative symptoms of schizophrenia, in particular, lack of motivation, anhedonia, apathy and flat affect.

BTW, Max was actually diagnosed with Aspergers in the movie.

Finally!!!

ELVIS ON TOUR BLU RAY

I saw this when I was a child on TV, had the VHS & Laser Disc.
But now finally I have it on Blu ray, and it's awesome. Even
though WB tried to sabotage it by substituting "Don't Be Cruel"
over "Johnny B. Goode" over the opening credits. $$$ talks or
$$$ walks (walks in this case). But other than that the sound is
great and the video is good considering it was filmed in 16mm.
Buy it, and then crank it up. Elvis is in the house.

I've seen a lot of movies lately, but I just watched Neverwas, and truly enjoyed it. It was really a sweet little movie... in my eyes it hearkened back to a time of simpler moviemaking and storytelling. There was no sex or violence, it was just a story about human compassion. I just found the entire experience of watching this one to be so refreshing.

The First Men In The Moon

Adaptation of HG Well's science fiction classic. As the Apollo Astronaughts are set to land on the Moon in 1969, and old Man tells of how he and a Professor were first there in 1909. A made for TV movie that promises what it delivers with the expected quality (or lack thereof) of a Television Show.

Legion... Whew boy, what a stinker!

World's Greatest Dad (Robin Williams)... Surprised me actually...

Old Boy... A graphic and shockingly entertaining revenge tale

Chaplin... Robert Downey Jr was fab

Robin Hood... Not really much better than the Kevin Costner one. Ridley Scott kinda disappoints here.

MEGAMIND - I'm a sucker for kids movies that don't involve talking animals, and I really enjoyed this one! Cliche plot, but great casting with Will Ferrell and Brad Pitt. Definitely worth watching if you are a fan of the genre.

Dead Silence... I was surprised that I actually found it a bit creepy in spots! It had the bad computer graphic elements that most horror movies nowadays insist on using.. but it also had some genuinely scary spots.

I don't know! I saw it in the theater in '06... Twice! I loved it that much. The graphic novel is interesting as well, if you haven't read it. ;)

My movie this week? Edge of Darkness. Mel Gibson, despite the fact that he's been a steaming bag of craziness lately, still has the goods. 7.5/10 on that one.

"Boy" - a NZ film... absolutely fantastic.

I FINALLY saw Boy for the first time last week! So funny  I'm not sure if people who don't live in New Zealand would get it that well though
