Fleetwood Mac '09: Nostalgia, cash and a tale of two divas named Stevie and Lindsey

Chicago Tribune (http://leisureblogs.chicagotribune.com/turn_it_up/2009/02/fleetwood-mac-09-nostalgia-cash-and-a-tale-of-two-divas-named-stevie-and-lindsey.html)

As the relationship between Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham goes, so goes Fleetwood Mac.

The band, formed as a British blues-rock outfit in 1967, has a history that reads like a soap-opera script. Band members have literally gone crazy. Some have gone AWOL. Others have slept with one another. Marriages were broken. More than 73 million records have been sold. And still the quarrels continue. Even a 2004 tour that raked in $22 million ended in acrimony, with a fed-up Nicks saying she was through and Buckingham returning to his solo career.

But now, on the eve of another Mac tour, the biggest problem facing Nicks is a sore arm. While being interviewed, she mentions that a physical therapist is working her over. “I strained my right arm doing arm curls, which I never do, so I’m trying to get it back so I can comfortably and enjoyably play tambourine.”

Such are the rigors of being a multimillionaire icon in a band that defined mainstream pop in the ‘70s. Mac is commanding as much as $149.50 per ticket (plus service charges) for a national tour that includes two concerts March 5-6 at the Allstate Arena. They promise few surprise; just a show with more than two hours of greatest hits --- just the way their fans presumably like it. “The songs we’re playing are the tapestry of not only our fans’ lives but our own lives,” Nicks says.

Buckingham has long detested the idea of doing a nostalgia tour, but he says he’s “just trying to ride the machine.” Part of Mac’s on-off existence the last three decades has been due to Buckingham’s creative restlessness; he’s maintained a solo career defined by adventurous albums in between Mac projects. As one of the band’s primary songwriters as well as its producer and arranger, Buckingham is first among equals, and his word goes a long way in determining Mac’s fortunes. This time, he agreed to do a hits tour to promote a box-set release of the band’s best-selling 1977 “Rumours” album.

“There’s still a push-pull inside me that says I need to redefine myself creatively, but I did two solo albums in the last three years, so it allowed me to feel a little more relaxed about doing something like this,” he says. “I am very consciously going into this not wanting to drive anyone in the band crazy if I can help it --- and sometimes it doesn’t take a lot for me to do that. My priority is working on the interaction within the band, especially between me and Stevie. I’m doing a tour that the industry and the listeners and the rest of the band want, and maybe sow some seeds of stability for once.”

That sounds like a man compromising his artistic instincts in the name of peace, harmony and cash. Buckingham laughs.

“Why am I doing this? It’s a good question… let me see, why am I doing this? Well, we’ll probably make a ton of money, and that’ll make everything a bit easier. But the other reason is that there’s unfinished business with Fleetwood Mac. Stevie left the last tour saying she wasn’t going to do this again, and that’s not right. It’s been a difficult road, we’ve been through a lot, and I want to see it play out and come out the other side in a bit better place than we were last time.”

Mac’s last tour followed the release of a 2003 studio album, “Say You Will.” That’s where the troubles began. Buckingham had interrupted his solo work to make the album with Mac, and brought finished songs into the recording session. Christine McVie had retired from the music business, leaving Buckingham and the founding rhythm section of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie to focus on Nicks’ songs. Buckingham and Nicks already had a long, fractured history; they were former lovers and old tensions would resurface whenever new conflicts emerged.

“It felt weird, working for nine months in a Bel Air mansion on just my songs,” Nicks says of the Los Angeles recording sessions. “It started to grate on everyone. It started to grate on Lindsey. It ended up not being our happiest album. Then we went on tour, and it was just a continuation of something that had already gone off track.”

Nicks says the departure of Christine McVie had a huge impact on band chemistry: “She was the voice of reason.” Nicks hunted for another female foil after the tour ended. “I vowed not to do it again unless we had another person who could act as a buffer,” she says. She recruited Sheryl Crow, but the singer backed out when she realized how big the commitment would be.

“She just had a baby, and once you’re in Fleetwood Mac, you don’t have a life of your own,” Nicks says. “It’s like joining the National Guard and being deployed to Iraq in two weeks.”

Well, no, it isn’t, actually. But melodrama is as much a part of Fleetwood Mac as hit songs.

Nicks says she agreed to hit the road with Buckingham and risk opening up old wounds again because she sensed a change in her old sparring partner. “He has little girls who are 8 and 4 years old, plus a wife, and he has been living in girl land since coming off the road in 2005. It’s softened him up. Instead of treating me as a miserable ex-girlfriend, he’s looking at me more like a beloved daughter. He’s been very nice and loving to me. This is the guy that I met and fell in love with when I was 17, and I hope it stays that way. No one could come in and make peace between us. Lindsey and I had to.”

Buckingham says if they pull off the tour without any meltdowns, there may be yet one more Fleetwood Mac studio album down the road. But he makes no promises. He has left the band in the past, and he says he will again if he feels things are growing stagnant.

“We all want this to work,” he says, “but there are only 45 dates scheduled. I’m sure there are people in back rooms somewhere talking about more dates in America and elsewhere in the world, but nothing is in the books, nothing has been agreed to. In this band, it’s best not to plan too far in advance.”

At this point, personally, I don't really care whether they come to Europe -I'm from Germany-. It would be nice if they did, but I'm going to have my Mac weekend in Phoenix and that's that.

I'm sorry. Good thing I wasn't sucking down cornflakes or something because they'd be all over the computer monitor.
Stevie is one of a kind. Beloved daughter. ha! Beloved daughter born one year before the beloved father. She couldn't choose "beloved sister he once fornicated with?"
These articles are pure comedy.

Stevie was in that mansion in Bel Air (as opposed to one in Newark) for 9 months working on those songs? How? Is that new math?

At this point I'm trying to remember why I want to see this concert. Stevie's always been in her own little make-believe world, but Lindsey basically stating that this is a cash grab leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Many of us who support their solo careers also attend Mac shows, they would be wise to remeber that.

I can sympathize with Lindsey. He hasn't had a big payday since 2004, and he has most likely lost tons of money between recording, promoting and touring behind his last two solo albums. Plus he's got three children and his wife's career to support... And given all of the paper wealth that has evaporated from the economy over the past six months, I am sure the bottom line at the Buckingham estate is lower than it has been since the 1970s.

I begin to feel sorry for Will, living in that girl land Stevie described. Actually, this is a good article. Thanks Peter.

Actually, Stevie said the same thing about Lindsey in 2003, how he was much softer and handled her in a much gentler fashion. Apparently that didn't last. I'm alarmed by the way he keeps softening and hardening, back and forth. Can't be healthy.

Great article. You've got to love Lindsey's honesty, "...why am I doing this? Well, we'll probably make a ton of money...", and "I am very consciously going into this not wanting to drive anyone in the band crazy if I can help it---and sometimes it doesn't take a lot for me to do that."

I thought the honesty was refreshing. I mean, everyone *knows* that this whole tour is a cash-grab (it couldn't be more blatantly obvious). It would be disingenuous and more offensive (Miss "I wish we could play for free!" Stevie Nicks) if he said otherwise.

I'm sorry but I don't feel sorry for Lindsey. I think he has plenty of money as do the rest of them. I already knew they were doing this for money but to come out and say it so blatantly is unecessary, IMO. Try to feign a little interest. At least appear to enjoy playing together. That's all I'm asking for!

I think he did much more than feign interest. I think he made it clear that he's also doing this for emotional satisfaction and with the hope that they can have a good time together on this tour with no one leaving feeling unhappy.

He said: But the other reason is that there’s unfinished business with Fleetwood Mac. Stevie left the last tour saying she wasn’t going to do this again, and that’s not right. It’s been a difficult road, we’ve been through a lot, and I want to see it play out and come out the other side in a bit better place than we were last time.

He put the money out there first, because that's the pink elephant in the room and then he went on to explain his other personal motivations and hopes about the relationships he wants to be made whole and fruitful.

So he's not saying it's all about the money. He at least wants something positive to come from it.

[B][SIZE="4"]“It felt weird, working for nine months in a Bel Air mansion on just my songs,” Nicks says of the Los Angeles recording sessions. “It started to grate on everyone."I like what Stevie says here. It emphasizes to me how the recording sessions probably grew fraught with anger or boredom. Lindsey & John may like a dab of Stevie Nicks here & there, but not all the time (musically speaking).

Then we went on tour, and it was just a continuation of something that had already gone off track.”I like this view, too, & I think it makes a lot of sense. It also -- probably unbeknown to Nicks -- echoes Lindsey's reason for jumping ship back during tour time in 1987. I think a lot of fans probably always thought that his reason was hooey, but I never did. I appreciated the seriousness & the truth of it. I bet he was so anxiety-ridden over the prospect of touring with FM that year -- after having suffered throughout the sessions -- that he was literally throwing up or coughing up blood from the stress. There was no way he could have agreed to do that tour at that time.

This is very nice. I hear a song in there too.

Regarding her army statement. She obviously means that it is a very regimented and disciplened environment. She is using the army to emphasize her point.

Come on people lighten up on her, she is not condoning the slughtering of kittens or anything.

Livia
02-20-2009, 06:22 PM
WE all know she's compared FM to being in the army many times...and I get that. And we all know how she has supported the troops. But the average person on the street knows none of those things. So when Stevie makes statements like this, it only reaffirms her airy-fairy, spacey image that most of the general public already have about her.

LukeA
02-20-2009, 06:32 PM
Regarding her army statement. She obviously means that it is a very regimented and disciplened environment. She is using the army to emphasize her point.

Yes, that was once the (lame) excuse that her defenders used to rationalize her insensitivity. However, this time, she went out of her way to elaborate on her generalization to show exactly what she has meant by it all these years.

You see, its not just the regimented/disciplined environment that comes by being a professional in general... but also the frightening, uncertain scenario of going to faraway lands (touring), putting yourself in a potential combat scenario (Lindsey the meanie) for who knows how long (read the damned contract next time).

Forget "costs a gazillion times more", "we wish we could play for free", "why bother recording"- those lines, more than anything, just present her as the relatively clueless person we can all pretty much concede her to be. She lives in a different world of celebrity and doesn't have a real idea on what the world is like around her, and who her fans truly are. As fans, we accept this as a necessary flaw, or even something that might even make her more charming (as I've seen suggested on these boards in this past week).

The army/Iraq analogy, however, reeks of pure idiocy and insensitivity. Its completely indefensible, and not something that can be excused (before anyone brings up the iPod's/Walter Reed/etc- a gesture can never override an overarching belief) Unless she was misquoted the dozens of times she's used this general analogy, this is how she believes.

Stevie's words here reminded me so much of what she said about him when TISL came out. I can see why Lindsey believes in the power of cycles!

Now we are good. We are actually friends. He has two children, a little girl and a little boy. Needless to say, going from a selfish rock 'n' roll god to having two babies, it's very much changed his life. He can't be selfish anymore. And he is thrilled with these little kids; they are precious. He never thought he was gonna have children, so he is surprised every day. He is a much softer, sweeter man and I love that, because I knew that softer man a long time ago. So I'm seeing my old friend back again.

I must say the hostility on this board is quite comical.

Regarding the topic at hand, I agree that Stevie is out of touch. Her biggest fault is not thinking before she speaks. But as was mentioned earlier, she lives a life of cloistered celebrity and has for many, many years. She's not living in the real world, so why would anyone expect her to make statements that do not reflect this?

michelej1

Stevie does not believe that being in Fleetwood Mac is like being in the army. I think there are millions of reasons to fault the gal, but in this instance she was intentionally exaggerating for humorous effect. Was it tacky? I'm not one of those people who thinks any of her charitable endeavors make her Mother Theresa. But I do believe that when you have gone to Walter Reed and seen that degree of injury and pain (both mental and physical) that you are hardly oblivious or uncaring.

We all remember when she said Lindsey was the Ayatolla Khomeini and they were his hostages. I myself am always comparing things that happen at work to Gitmo and I don't really believe -- well, actually I am tortured and humiliated frequently, so bad example -- but the most Stevie can be accused of is making a joke some find in bad taste. She doesn't believe there is any truth or valid comparison in what she said any more than we do.

And you like Trisha Yearwood... Talk about out of touch...

i guess i need no more information to know that your musical/artistic opinion means absolutely zilch. thanks!

however i am curious to know why you trisha yearwood is "out of touch." or maybe i'm the one who's out of touch for listening to her?

if you've ever listened to one of her records, you would know that she has more vocal talent and class than stevie ever did, even in her heyday.

bitter old crone that i am, i give stevie her due. i think bella donna is a masterpiece and i just listened to it again last night. i think rumours is top notch. and her tusk songs are incredible. but overall, as an artist, her success had more to do with timing and sex appeal than "genius."

musically, her songs are almost painfully simple. the woman knows like 5 chords - C, G, F, Am, and Em. maybe a handful of others. but none that enable her to think outside the sonic box and create a chord structure that isn't the same old same old. and her seeming allergy to the concept of having a bridge seriously cripples her writing.

lyrically, stevie belongs to the "throw some sh*t at a wall and see what sticks" school of writing. for every "bella donna" and "beauty and the beast" there are 10 songs in her catalogue of released and unreleased songs that mean absolutely nothing. "gate and garden"? "bell flower"? what on earth do these songs mean? i am not a tori amos fan, so someone stringing together a list of "pretty words" does nothing for me. silly me, i actually expect words to tell a story. sometimes stevie's do, but i would venture to say that most do not. she changes person, number, and tense so often, who can keep track?

and vocally? jesus. stevie had a handful of good years. stevie had a pretty nice instrument, but she didn't know what to do with it, so she shredded it. she wanted to be janis joplin, but she never had the chops for it. she got about 6 good years out of her voice and that was it. she sounded excellent on the street angel and dance tours, but she had lost the reedy, almost oboe-like quality that gave her voice such beauty back in the 70's.

trisha, on the other hand, does not write her own songs. however, she has unimpeachable taste at choosing material. she has covered artists as diverse as melissa etheridge, emmylou harris, and rosanne cash - all esteemed songwriters and performers.

and vocally, there is just no contest. trisha has the ability to oversing and really go over the top, but she has the intelligence and control not to. i challenge anyone to listen to "down on my knees," "i don't paint myself into corners," and "the dreaming fields" and not come to the same conclusion.

i suspect, kennation, that you have not spent much time listening to trisha and therefore write her off as a stupid radio country artist. you couldn't be more wrong.

You hit the nail on the head, as far as I see it.

Is it the best possible analogy she could make? No. But it seems pretty obvious to me that she's not trying to belittle the sacrifice of the men and women in the army (she's seen that first-hand), or literally compare what Fleetwood Mac does to what they do.

You hit the nail on the head, as far as I see it.You the the nail on the head, too, Stew. Melodramatic Stevie speaks in hyperbole. It's sort of a campy hyperbole -- "It's faabulous" she often says. And we should all be used by now to taking what she says with a grain of salt & making the necessary interpretive adjustments. We're all Patrick Dennis & Stevie is Auntie Mame. We're patient & loyal & we sometimes roll our eyes at our batty old aunt, but we love that aspect of her style, too.

But here's the nail whose head you hit for me, Stew. You've made me able to verbalize my indifference to her songwriting: I don't believe the tropes in her songs any more than I believe the rhetorical embellishments in her speech.

In my distress
I wanted someone to blame me
In my devastation
I wanted so to change
In my way
Disaster was the only thing I could depend on
_____
The promise has been broken
As you walk through the shadow of death
You try to see no evil
But you are heartbroken
You say, "Dear God, make it stop"
_____
The tragedy of one's own soul
_____
There is no fire burning
It's just a soul crying

All these sentiments seem like bunk to me. I don't believe the writer means any of this deeply. I think it's all dressing things up in narcissistic & phony drama. Most of Stevie's songs -- lyrically -- strike me as hooey. I still like them (I like the horse**** Stevie speaks, too). I just can't consider her a great songwriter & liken her to other great writers.

Agreed. She is dramatic and she is in her own bubble, but there is no need for that. Back to the "curls" comment- Every morning that I do curls I will think of her. I am gonna start telling people that I am working out again so that I can enjoy playing the tambourine LOL... I love that woman. Hey- I wonder if she is on P90X, like Sheryl Crow?

I'm sorry but I don't feel sorry for Lindsey. I think he has plenty of money as do the rest of them. I already knew they were doing this for money but to come out and say it so blatantly is unecessary, IMO. Try to feign a little interest. At least appear to enjoy playing together. That's all I'm asking for!

Actually, I feel the opposite. I find his honesty refreshing, and pretty damn cool. Given how annoyingly redundant and cliche his interviews tend to be, I embrace his sense of frankness with open arms. Man is just speaking the truth and maybe some others should follow suit. I refuse to believe that most of these old-time groups tour non-stop because they love their fans so much. Please. I was born at night but not LAST night.

If you do this in any written composition class at a high school level, it's an automatic F!!! I often wondered if Stevie realized that this is a HUGE blunder in writing.

Also... "For You and I", drives me crazy. You would get major points off for that blunder as well....

I don't think you can say that to Bob Dylan. Stevie could give a rat's ass what tense she's writing in. She writes what she wants and it's served her pretty well all these years.

You and I? Was'nt that a crappy Lindsey/Chris song?

What is with all the nitpicking.

1. We know Stevie is dramatic and living in another world.

2. We know Lindsey is a self centered ass

3. Their music is more about feeling than grammar

Why all the bitching when these things are confirmed?

I wasn't born yesterday either. If he has these supposed principles then he should stick to his solo tours (which my pocketbook would appreciate). Yes I knew this tour was a cash grab, but as I think bikerchic said he doesn't need to come out and say it. How is it cool and refreshing? It just makes him look like an ass. I'm a fan of Fleetwood Mac first, and will probably enjoy the 1 show I plan to attend, but really these interviews are getting out of hand. They need to shut up and get on with it at this point. I doubt any of these interviews are helping sell tickets.

Erin, I explained in my post why I thought it was cool and refreshing. I totally respect that you have a different opinion and don't agree. I was not starting a debate, merely stating how I felt about the issue. And that is that Lindsey's comments do not bug me. What bugs me is when he repeats the same stale phrases verbatim using pretentious, overbearing language. I always knew he/they were doing it for the money, so the fact that he went and said it really didn't bring about an adverse reaction. It's the simple, plain truth.

However, I understand how some people, yourself included, are offended. I understand and I am not arguing with you over that. So you have your feelings, I have mine. We'll agree to disagree and enjoy the music instead. :wavey:

Wow this is a good and interesting thread so far. Personally, it was refreshing to read Lindsey's comments in this interview. I think its nice that someone actually stated the facts about this tour. Not like as if I didn't think it was all about the $$ to begin with anyway. He just totally confirmed it. Besides the really nothing new (to me anyway) setlist and the high ticket prices...the reasons I will not support this Fmac tour or another Stevie solo tour.
I do think Stevie's comments are not right. Give me a break. Its so wrong to compare Fmac to anyone serving in the Army. I don't care if she being humorous or not. I do think that its insensitive to all the men & woman serving our country right now. I don't care how bad Mac was in the past with Lindsey or anyone....I don't think that would ever compare period. She really is out of touch period. I do think they should all not give interviews with the crap there saying. Yeah, I can't believe it's helping them with ticket sales either. I don't feel bad for any of them if they've all blown all of there $$. All of them should have net eggs by now and if not than its there fault. Most people don't have jobs right now. This whole tour does leave a bad taste in my mouth as well. That is IMO.....I think everyone has made some great points in this thread. If Stevie doesnt get the arm back to Tambourine playing capacity, I'm scalping my tickets. How COULD the show go on!?

When I first read the part of Lindsey's "cash grabbing" statement, I was somewhat dissapointed in him. But then you have to think, he's put out three albums and gone on tour twice, just to do his thing. Obviously those wern't cash grabs. If anything, the other members are more dissapointing for taking part. I don't fault John, because he'd be there regardless of a new album, and I'm pretty sure he didnt mind putting his solo career on hold. ;)

Frankly, I got amped for the tour when they announced it. I was going to buy tix for DC and Philly in addition to the Pittsburgh ones I already had, but I'm not anymore. Opening will be enough for me. A new album would be interesting, but I really dont care. IMO Stevie's work on SYW was sub-par (and a few of Lindsey's too) so I have very little faith in a new effort.
I'd be much more eager for the tour to be over, for Lindsey to get active again. But maybe we're all spoiling ourselves with anticipation. Im sure people couldnt WAIT for the follow up to OOTC....

I don't really get why people are offended by the fact that Lindsey admits he's partly doing this tour for the cash. He did offer other reasons too afterall but it's pretty obvious that's the main motivation for all of them, I mean, will the concerts sound better pretending that's not the case? I'm sure they will put their heart in soul into it regardless.

I don't know. I think, in some ways, they are all trapped within the confines of characters they created for themselves, if that makes any sense.

They most certainly get asked the same freaking stupid questions time after time. And circumstances kind of dictate slightly different answers nowadays. But, the fact is, John is still the quiet one who just wants to shut up and play (God bless him!). Mick sees himself as the English gentleman (no comment). Stevie is the self-professed Ancient Diva Fairy Grandma lately (!!!) and Lindsey is The Artiste.

They are going to answer questions through those filters. So, no. I'm not taking them as seriously as I once did. There are going to be things that piss me off, and things that make me laugh. The tour is what it is. There is, really, nothing much to say about it. Even if everyone agreed with Lindsey and said it's all for the money--where do you go from there? Follow-up question would probably be about their love affairs and just how hard Rumours was to make. The interviews are geared for the casual fans, not die-hards who've heard it all before.

So, they don't want to be together? Isn't that weird  The more I read about it, the more I think that this tour won't be worth a visit. On the other hand, Lindsey has been "teh force" for a long time, and if he's bored with that I can imagine. Why not songs written together with John & Mick?

I'm not saying that, if there had been a new album, they HAVE to play 8 or 10 songs from it, but 3-4 is kinda ok with me, and ONLY the stronger ones lol.

I think this interview pissed me off more than usual for a couple of reasons. First this was in my local paper, so I kept getting emails from friends and coworkers pointing out what asses they are. I'm getting tired of having to defend them, I guess. Second, with the majority of us worried about whether we're going to be employed tomorrow or not, I really didn't appreciate the lets milk Fleetwood Mac fans by doing this lame ass tour attitude. Perhaps Lindsey didn't mean to sound as cold as he came off. I'm used to them making asinine comments, but I guess my tolerance level has reached its limits.

I've decided that "fan" isn't a marketing category -- or one with any distinct meaning. From the perspective of the music market, there are no fans. There are consumers & there are non-consumers. Fleetwood Mac's in business. It uses market principles of supply, demand, cost, and contracts to be successful. Like Chevron. Fleetwood Mac, like Chevron, wants to make consumers satisfied, of course, but that's a lot different from the view that "fans" shouldn't be "milked" -- for reasons of loyalty or love or support.

Also wanted to add something about Mick. Someone said earlier that Lindsey is the only one in the band who has put out some albums in recent years. But Mick has, too -- two or three albums, in fact, in the past five years or so.

I don't know. I'm more offended by Mick and Stevie saying this tour is "for the fans" and then offering up virtually the same old stale set list for inflated prices (people worrying about these hard economic times will be soothed, they say, by the familiar songs on offer, forgetting that those who actually have money worries won't be able to afford to go). At least Lindsey is honest about his motives.

At least Lindsey is honest about his motives.

What justifies Lindsey's comments for me is the fact that he spent the past couple of years releasing albums and touring behind them, knowing full well that they probably wouldn't chart and he would most likely lose more than make money. He did it for his art and his fans and he was honest about his intentions there. So the fact that he blatantly says, "I'm doing this for money" really does not bother me. I'm grateful he's honest and I'm still going to see the concert and cheer for the band. Really, I am going for Lindsey. I love him dearly and he's my favorite. Yes, he's capable of being a bit of an asshole, but I enjoy parts of that side of him sometimes as well. It's an interesting combination with Stevie's airy personality.

You could say I am biased, but actually I'd probably applaud any other artist if they said what he said after they'd spent the last few years doing what Lindsey has done.

Stevie can always make money touring, but it doesn't compare to the big pay day that they can make as Fleetwood Mac. Even divided four ways, it's more money in 45 dates than Stevie could probably make doing a couple of years worth of solo dates.

Lindsey can't make money touring like Stevie can, but I would hope that he hasn't spent all the many millions he made from the SYW tour and the profitable sell of his home just 5 years ago, so that he needs the money today. I mean, I know he's got 3 kids and a wife, but do they really go through $15 - $25 million that fast? From what Mick and Stevie say, Lindsey is a fairly frugal guy . . . although I've never heard anyone say that about Kristen. Still . . .

There's no doubt that he wants the money and I sincerely hope he puts it to good use and funds another solo tour in the future.

I hope he's not at the financial point where he "needs" it though.

I'm going to have to jump on the bandwagon and say that I'm glad Lindsey said it. I wish he wasn't doing FM at all if that's the main motivation behind it, since it makes him a hypocrite for all the times he slagged the Eagles, but at the very least he is being honest.

Any knock on the Eagles by Lindsey was always BS anyway. As if Fleetwood Mac during his entire tenure has been some revolutionary avant-garde touring machine. Sorry, but ever since the Tusk Tour ended, his tours with the band haven't exactly been earth shattering as far as pushing envelopes, especially with new material. The Mirage Tour had a lowly four song representation from the album it supported and The Dance Tour had another set of four new songs. I will give him some credit for pushing the his own songs for the Say You Will tour but the fact that many of Stevie's "new" songs were eliminated almost immediately after their initial outing kind of ruins it.

Musicians are always out there to make money and they, nor their fans, should really expect much else. It's almost as if, because they call themselves "artists," we expect more from them than we would from someone in another profession. Lindsey or anyone else mocking the Eagles (or Fleetwood Mac, or the Stones, or any other "classic" band) for touring to make money is laughable. People work because they have to make money to live. So they make more money than us, who cares. It was kind of refreshing to read that he said that as opposed to some song and dance about creative juices, cycles and restatements of previous works and so on.

Stevie can always make money touring, but it doesn't compare to the big pay day that they can make as Fleetwood Mac. Even divided four ways, it's more money in 45 dates than Stevie could probably make doing a couple of years worth of solo dates.

Lindsey can't make money touring like Stevie can

There's no doubt that he wants the money and I sincerely hope he puts it to good use and funds another solo tour in the future.

I hope he's not at the financial point where he "needs" it though.

Michele

Why do you think that Lindsey can't make money is true? I think the past couple of tours Lindsey has gained a lot of ground in building up his fan base and has purposefully reached out to fans. I think it's possible the band, if they invested in the stock market, etc, could have some financial problems, but, it seems unlikely, as they seem totally clueless as to what is happening with most of America in terms on the current economical status.

I think the exact opposite is true, actually. Lindsey toured SO often from Fall 2006-Fall 2008 that he over-saturated his product. As a result, what ended up being his best tour (this past fall) was also his least attended. Promoters (as well as G4-lovin' Lindsey) lost money.

I enjoy Lindsey's solo stuff immensely..but it is largely not marketable. He will never make much money off it. I don't think it's due to oversaturation per se, although that is a great point. I think he has a definite target audience - and that audience will never be part of the commercial masses because it is primarily made up of those with a discerning ear and a taste for true art.

TOTALLY AGREE... I am sure that Stevie is with us on this one. ;) Could you imagine what it's like to be her? Having to hear him go on and on and on... (Just playing... I thought we would spread the heat on to Lindsey the way we do Stevie.)

Still . . .

maybe he didn't spend it - I assume he must invest. Maybe he got screwed on the stock market. You never know.

is this your first time seeing them? If so, yeah, you'll probably LOVE it!! Come to think of it, I've only seen the Rumours lineup (sans Christine) once in 2004 so it's pretty new for me, too. I am in eager anticipation:blob1:

It'll be my second time seeing the MAC, but I am sure I will be insane. I am already talking about how I will not be able to sleep the night before. LOL I wonder if Stevie has something I could take for that? Hmmm... I am so excited. I don't know what I will say to Mick. I think I am just going to keep my mouth shut for fear of sounding like a freakin' idiot, lol!

I really think most people who see the show will say it was fantastic. Although there will always be things they wish had been included or done differently.

The fact that the setlist might largely be the same as it was in the past is disappointing, because there are many songs I know they could do with little effort. Of course, the fact that the setlist doesn't change is more of a conversation point, rather than a deterrent to me. I do like to see the same show over and over again and I like to get to the familiar stage where the songs and stage movements are second nature, so I don't have to focus on those any longer or I can get enjoyment in wondering about the small deviations in same.

The best thing I could come up with is to ask him if I can hold his wooden balls for the photo... LOL I am sure that we will just LOVE that- NOT! I am a total dense case on any given day; so, this should be interesting. The things that fly out of my mouth when I am nervous would make George Bush feel well spoken,

This article mostly culls from the telephone press conference they gave, so we've seen most of the quotes in it, but I think this little one from Stevie may be new:

The Eagle Tribune:

http://www.eagletribune.com/pulife/local_story_065160009.html
"As far as just the personalities have been going, to everybody, not just me and Lindsey, everybody has been getting along great," Nicks said, when asked how rehearsals had been going. "Everybody has been very kind to each other this time around, and when it's going like that it's a pleasure."

you know
i always get the impression when they're talking about each other, they ONLY mean each other...like Lindsey knew stevie was ****ty with him last tour and Stevie has said she didn't like being on tour because of his attitude towards her etc

that quote makes me wonder if it's not JUST S&L that had an issue with each other. i mean...would there be **** with Lindsey and Mick? or Mick and Stevie? I dont like thinking there's all this band hate just coz S&L weren't getting along or because Lindsey was "boss" as producer etc last time. maybe Stevie pissed everyone off and she's had to change her 'tude too?

Well that time she said that working on her songs for 6-9 months (I think that was her time frame) grated on everyone's nerves. And she said Lindsey too, but she added him afterwards. Initially she said it was hard on everyone.

Also, Lindsey was complaining because all of them went to Hawaii. Other than Mick, I can't see him wanting anyone to be there for SYW's post-production, so I don't think he was whining about John and Stevie being in Hawaii. Well, he may have meant Stevie too, but I think he's just used to Mick being with him for that sort of thing. So, I think maybe they were all a little fed up with each other right after the album. Regarding the tour itself, that friction may not have involved everyone.

Reminds me of Stevie talking about FFG. She said it was about FM and then clarified that by FM on stage, she means mostly her and Lindsey.
