Cigarettes that is... we know she still likes the wacky weed  . I ask because it seems her voice has improved some since Trouble In Shangri La. I was just listening to some interviews from the Trouble In Shangri La era, and it's very obvious she was still a heavy smoker then... she sounded so gross! But it seems her speaking AND singing voices are both clearer and higher these days. Anyone have the 411? :wavey:

From what I understand she use to smoke 2+ packs of KOOLs a day, but she has quit. I read that she used the patch, or something... Maybe it was the gum... Either way, she doesn't smoke anymore. (FROM WHAT SHE TELLS US, lol)

I suspect that after she went through her "change of life," she probably started up with some kind of estrogen replacement therapy. Ask Suzanne Somers- it sure has kept her all perky and girly after all these years.

She suposedly has not smoked in years. (cigarettes that is)

Maybe she thinned her rib cage & her upper torso by fasting, & then took treatment for COPD.

She quit in '98. I remember because she did Mix Fest that year and had just quit smoking. She'd lost weight too and looked and sounded so wonderful. It was like, "She's baaaack." Awesome. She did use the patch.

YAY!!! I love Stevie as a smoker. I saw a picture of her smoking and was like, somehow that seems to fit her. I know it's bad for the health, but it seemed to fit her. A girlfriend of mine tried to convince me that she was still on drugs after we watched a couple of videos together one night. I saw her point in one video that's on youtube, but she could have just been really into the moment... I will post video when I find it. I am sure she is all clean, sober, and smoke-free. Surely ;)

P.S.
Why is it everyone thinks that she smokes grass? I would have never pegged her for that.

Oh, she totally smokes weed. I think the reason is the demos that are out where she talks about it. LB hit the pipe a few times on the DR doc, and I'm sure he shared... ;)

Lindsey clearly hits the pipe when they are in the studio with Mark Needham. The segments are sped up so you have to watch it in slow motion. It's near the end of the segment, I believe the music for Miranda is playing over it, and Stevie has left the control room. It's John, Lindsey and Mick sitting at the table and Lindsey reaches back behind him to his left, gets the pipe and lights it - you can see the smoke rise and he does it a couple of more times.

I believe the date that she has mentioned as when she quit smoking was January of 1997 ..5 months prior to the taping of The Dance..not certain if she has relapsed since then,

Watch the Destiny Rules doc. When she is rambling about who buys records and double albums and such, she's as high as a kite. Just look at her eyes. If you've ever smoked pot, or known anyone who has smoked pot, that look is unmistakable.

There is also a demo of The Dealer where she says, and I quote:

"Alright, where's the dope? I need to smoke a joint, at least a little bit of a joint. Hey, so I'm a rock and roll hippie."

Ok... I thought that you saw an actual pipe lying around. I knew Lindsey would be way tooo on top of things for that. I will agree with you- the woman does look a little stoned there. HAHAAA  She total does.

I have never heard The Dealer... is it good? If anyone owns the demo where she asks for a joint, I would love to hear it!!! Please post it!!!

HOW ON THIS GREEN EARTH DID YOU NOTICE THAT?!?!?! I just spent the last half hour of my life rewinding, fastforwarding, zooming, analyzing that dvd... YOU ARE RIGHT!!! How did you notice that? He is totally hitting that pipe! I love the fact that he still has a little grass every now and then. Not my thing, but rock on, LB! Seriously, CADreaming, you have eyes like a frappin' hawk. What's more? He didn't even hide it. It was out there for everyone to see. Lindsey, you sly cat, you! Bless his heart. I could imagine what days with Stevie and that band is like. I would have to hit a pipe, or two, myself- Well done, CADreaming! Well done! KUDOS TO YOU! I am only this psyched because no one else would have, or has- to my knowledge, noticed it. Wow... I zoomed in on my 73" television so it was like, I could smell the weed it was so close, lol. I also do that with Stevie's Soundstage blu-ray... I zoom in so she is life size, lol. Thanks for the LB/Grass point out! Well done!

ROFLOL! Thanks, I guess I've just got good eyesight? The smoke caught my attention the first time I saw it and so I slowed it down and voila! Funny stuff, isn't it? It's also funny before that where Stevie picks up her dog and leans it over to Lindsey while he's laying down on the sofa, I guess for him to pet it or I could just hear her making "doggie" talk to Lindsey with it..."Hi, Linds. Pet me!" LOL.

This is a funny subject. Stevie's voice has improved a little not because of cigarettes. Cigarettes don't improve your voice, they make you sound like Marianne Faithfull. Stevie works with a vocal coach now. That's why she sounds so good. I really don't think that she was "high as a kite" in that Destiny Rules Doc. She was probably exausted from recording and arguing with Buckingham. Hell, arguing with that man could make anyone exausted. LOL! I love him to death, but sometimes, he can be a little strange. LOL! I've gotta check out that "pipe thing" with Lindsey on the doc. though. LOL!:blob2::]

Well, my recollection is that Stevie started working with a vocal coach ever since The Dance era in 1997, so I don't think that could explain why Stevie sounds better now after sounding a bit "off" between the TISL and SYW eras. I think there could be a number of factors:

-Weight gain/loss
-Hip/back/foot issues necessitating the use of corticosteroids (which helps to explain the SYW weight gain)
-Menopause
-Better management of her chronic bronchitis/asthma

I also suspect that non-stop touring has forced her to maintain peak form on a constant basis; remember, no moss grows on a rolling stone.

You're not getting what I'm saying: her STOPPING SMOKING seems to have helped her voice tremendously. She was supposedly seen smoking during the SYW tour, and her voice was kinda ragged during that and the TISL tour. She's sounded better since. I agree with Hejira too though... I think it's a combo of things contributing to her improved voice.

Regarding her smoking pot, she's said in several interviews that she quote "hasn't done any HARD DRUGS since 1986." She's a baby boomer, hippie, rock star... if she DIDN'T smoke pot, I'd be very, very surprised.

Maybe they thought since it was speeded up, no one would notice.

With her dog, I like the part in rehearsal where the dog is running around during GYOW and Lindsey follows it a little and he runs away. I don't think the dog cared for the shackin' up part:p.

I was just listening to some interviews from the Trouble In Shangri La era, and it's very obvious she was still a heavy smoker then... she sounded so gross!

I think what you're referring to here had to do with menopause. Hormones effect changes in women's voices throughout their life. When she was in the thick of it, she openly discussed (and we all noticed) a drop in her energy level, at which time her voice may have been a bit more gravelly. Now that she is through it and feeling better (and possibly taking some type of supplemental estrogen), her voice may be more youthful again.

I believe that Stevie did 'officially' quit cigarettes in '97, but as for pot.....who knows?! If she has had some minor cigarette relapses since then (the alleged SYW smoking sightings), that would not be at all unlikely or uncommon. Everyone I know who has quit smoking has relapsed anywhere from once to multiple times. They say the main goal is to stay on the path of not becoming a full time smoker again, because cigarettes are so incredibly addictive on so many levels and therefore incredibly difficult to stay away from! I'm sure it's likely still a challenge that rears its ugly head for Stevie sometimes, especially given that she has a variety of many addictions in her past.

I agree with most of what you said. I remember reading concert reviews for the Say You Will Tour, Atlanta 2004, specifically and fans said they saw her smokin butts before the show. Im sure its just for her nerves. As for the pot, I have full confidence that Stevie Nicks still gets high. She lives alone (basically) and has tons of money, im sure a joint or two gets the creative juices going for her.

IMO, she still tokes up. I saw her when she toured with Tom Petty a few years ago and her eyes are soooooo glassy and heavy - and she so got into American Girl, look at the tour pics and her eyes - who could blame her? toking with Tom & the gang - good times for sure!

I personally don't think she smokes, however she may give in and have one every so often. I know I personally saw her smoking, as did others, at the July 30th 2001 Chastain Park show in Atlanta. We watched the Soundcheck through the wood fence, and she DEFINITELY smoked in between songs. Now, what she was smoking? Who knows, the way she held it looked like a cigerrette though.

'I was one chain-smoking, coffee-swilling mess while I was there' at the Betty Ford Clinic"

Mark and Brian Show, 8/15/97:

MB: So your body goes through - you lose that much weight, - your body goes through all these changes. What about your voice? Did it improve it? Did you have to rework it, almost?

SN: Well you know, you can be very heavy, and have a great voice.

MB: No, no, no. But you -

SN: You could be a opera - opera singer, you know. So its like that doesn't. . . No. Actually, I think my voice is really a lot better is cause I stopped smoking January 1st.

MB: (simultaneously) Hey, way to go/oh congratulations.

SN: That was hard. >unintelligible banter<

MB: That's beyond hard.

SN: That was harder than losing weight.

MB: Its close to impossible. You know, its easy, almost, to say no to the dessert, or to this or to that. But to not pick up that good looking Marlboro Red, and fire it up, baby.

LB: hehehehehe

MB: Lets go - lets celebrate this one with a smoke. What do you say?

I STAY ON THE LEDGE. I feel a little concerned sometimes. I have to cut myself off from this, but I really like seeing differences in opinion- different ways of looking at things. At the end of it all we seem like a happy group of people who like sharing different mac pieces i.e. downloads, stories, art.... I just think that it's great. I love how we sometimes get short with one another and heavily express ourselves. It just reminds me of, well, Fleetwood Mac. LOL I am glad that I am here. Where would I be without The Ledge??? It's from the DR doc. She partakes before Lindsey does, watch it in slow mo, she even does it a second time, and you see her tilt her head back and blow smoke up into the air. Then Karen comes in with her food, she munches out, leaves, and then it's Lindsey's turn.

My thought is that she only smokes cigarettes sporadically but tokes regularly... ;)

Yeah, my first clue that she was still toking was when she said several years back that "I haven't done any hardcore drugs since 1986." Then came the Destiny Rules doc... where she was clearly high when she was sitting on the couch talking about "this is not about art." I have to admit I'm kinda surprised Stevie is a pipe girl... she seems like she'd be more of an old school rolling paper kinda gal . The fact she's still smoking pot definitely explains why her voice has continued to degrade the past 15 years... pot is rough on your vocal chords!

Stevie has always smoked pot. There is an old demo of, I believe it's Mistress Of My Fate, where she says something like "Ok where's the weed? I need a joint, at least a little bit of a joint. Hey... so I'm a rock and roll hippie!" Pot is probably what degraded her vocal chords more than smoking, cocaine, and her old school Rhiannon exorcisms combined. It's tough on your throat and lungs! More power to her though... nothing mellows you out and makes you happy like Ms Mary Jane!

I think what's in that picture is a pipe, but when you mention that, I do remember her using a vapor thing for her voice back in the day. It was a machine and she put her head over it and let the steam come up. It was almost like giving yourself a facial.

What I remember the most about that video clip was that she and Robin were using the vapor machine and Lindsey was across the room and he started walking over and she seemed really distracted by the fact that he was coming over in her direction. When he got there, he just said something like, "hey" when he passed them, but she seemed like she was on a spring. She could hardly inhale the vapor for looking at his approach.

Well, I agree. I'm just saying it now has added benefits, perhaps. I wouldn't say that's the reason she does it. I know it isn't Lindsey's reason and I didn't even think it was Melissa Etheridge's after I heard her give some pretty cock-eyed rationalizations to Anderson Cooper about her post-chemo use of weed.

Are you kidding? Of course, it's recreational.

I, for one am not surprised that she's still smoking. My sense is that she's a practical minded, progressive person at 61. A little old lady who shops and probably eats cake when she's bummed out. In Stevie land, she's would be a lot more Greta than Alice. But I digress - she smokes dope and watches The Office - be real, folks.

Hmm...no way anyone in the immediate circle new it was in the movie, eh? I doubt that. FM not in control of every single thing they produce or create? I think not. They've got a billion "people" (lawyers, marketing people, etc) who would have gone over every single piece of footage on that DVD so...I'm pretty sure they would know it was in there...I'm surprised that none of those "people" thought to take it out, that's all.

I hope Stevie doesn't have any sort of degenerative arthritis type disease...I think any pot use now is totally recreational, and why the hell not!? It's not a hideous drug. It's fun, it's relaxing, it's a social drug if not taken to real extremes...I myself would gladly sit back and share a joint, pipe or bong with Stevie and anyone else who's around!! :D

Pssst - - This is just opinion but I think it's very possible that he doesn't really have epilepsy - - I've wondered sometimes if he took
too much coke and it triggered a brain seizure. Seems entirely possible to me.

I have an audio tape of her in-studio 2001 radio interview (done in Toronto with a radio host named Marilyn Denis) where Stevie talked about quitting smoking. My memory’s fuzzy, but basically she said that her therapy involved her quitting before New Year’s, and she had to make the cigarette ‘her friend’ (yes that’s what she said!) and then figure out why she was friends with the cigarette that she depended on it so badly. I think she also mentioned because her whole family smoked, she started.

Me either! Or used any other illegal drug. I guess I'm a goody-goody! Speaking of Lindsey and marijuana, I have that book that Jenny Boyd wrote (Musicians In Tune) and in it Lindsey talks about pot helping out with the 'creative process'.

Remember, Lindsey never really was a "big drug user". Atleast according to him...

Lindsey does have a tendency to try and distance himself from a lot of the drug use that went on back then

He's not the only one who says he wasn't a big drug user -- at least that he didn't use as much as the rest of them. The others confirm that. I mean, if you don't count marijuana.

I don't think John did as much coke as the other 3 either. At least they don't count him in the heavy coke discussions. He chose liquor. And Christine was third in line, doing less coke than Mick and Stevie and more alcohol.

Oh yeah, some people can't handle it. It screws up their brain. I had a friend back when I was about 19 (she was 17) and we all had a night of tequila and pot, and it was her first time ever trying pot, and she FREAKED OUT!!!! We eventually were forced to call for an ambulance (there was no physical emergency, but she was so insane we had no choice). Ugh...what a total nightmare that night was!!

I myself have always had good experiences with pot.

it happened to me when I was 19. Horrendous. I still can remember the horror. To this day, when I have panic attacks I am transported back to that bad night and wonder if I unleashed something irreversible back then.

It gave me sleep apnea. I used to think the way you do.
She has asthma. She shouldn't be smoking at all.
Healthwise, weed is worse for your body than cigs, did you know that?
Lecture over.

I'm going to have to disagree that they are worse than cigs, completely and totally. But i hate arguing more than anything. So if you want to be right then I will let you. All i'm going to say is elementary school knowledge will tell you otherwise than what you think.

Also, happy birthday!

Thank you for the B-Day wishes!

I don't like to argue either and I don't feel the need to be "right." It's all good. It's all open for discussion. The reason weed is worse is because when we smoke it we want to suck as much of the smoke as possible into our lungs. When we smoke cigs, we inhale too, but not as much smoke as we would with a joint. Cig smoke does nothing whereas weed smoke gets you high, so I can see how one would think that is a benefit. However, smoking is bad for your body, no matter which way one looks at it.

:wavey:

Absolutely no cigarettes.

I don't know where people got the idea Stevie quit smoking in 97, she didn't quit for 2 years after that. Anyway I have 2 interviews with Stevie about smoking. In one interview she mentions she smoked 3 packs of kools a day and drinks very strong coffee. In the other interview she says once again that she smokes 3 packs of kools a day, and on December 31, 1999 she stayed up all night and smoked one cigarette after another and drank a lot of whiskey and on January 1, 2000 she slapped on the patch and never looked back. Now she may have relapsed if people saw her smoking in 2003. I also don't see a vocal coach wasting his time working with you if you smoked. Smoking does nothing good for your voice.

I remember an interview where she talked about smoking a bunch of cigarettes right before quitting, but I don't remember her providing dates. I thought I read it around the time she was promoting Enchanted. She was performing in Las Vegas on December 31, 1999.

Here's the Destiny Rules pot incident slowed down... Thought someone might get a kick out of it. I sure did!

Interesting! Do you think you could post all of the speedups slowed down? Cuz my DVD player doesn't do that nor does my laptop.
BTW, how do you tell the difference between a weed joint and a cigarette?

Well with Stevie seeming to be obsessed over her figure I would think she'd refrain from a drug that makes you eat more:sorry:

How could that surprise you? Stevie and Lindsey were teenagers in California at the height of the hippie movement! They were heavily "influenced" musically and othewise by that era. Of all the band members, I suspect, in large, Stevie and Lindsey were the stoners, and the English members were the drinkers.

It's fairly well known that Stevie had a panache for partying far beyond normal bounds. Many personal accounts cited in various books attest to that. Anne and Nancy Wilson spent time with Stevie in the 1970s and were amazed about how much coke she would injest. I'm grateful that she was eventually able to overcome the addictions and live a more sustainable life. While I believe she now lives more healthier than ever before, she may very still inbibe in a little drink and smoke here and there.

Watching the Destiny Rules documentary, I was very surprised that a particular clip made the cut. In a brief shot you see Stevie in the recording studio, sitting at a mixing board, listening to a playback. She takes a hit from a glass bong and blows out a big pillar of smoke. The scene cuts quick.
