I'm just seeing this now on tv. About 10:30 pm a plane going from Neewark to Buffalo crashed into a home in a Buffalo suburb killing all 48 people on board. No word yet on the occupants of the home.:distress:

Tragic. I'm about 5 miles away. Nothing like this has ever happened here, but living near the airport I can't help but wonder "what if" every once in a while.
The final count is 50 people dead. :distress: One theory is that ice developed rapidly on the wings. The plane nosedived right into the house.

 Wow. Did you hear anything? I understand the explosion was like a bomb going off. You must be more than a little rattled being so close to the situation. :distress:

^ I realized this morning that the sound I thought was a snowplow hitting something in my neighborhood last night was probably the crash.
Names are being released little by little as families are notified. I can't believe the woman & her daughter got out of that house.

Chuck Mangione's Bandmates Die in Fatal Crash
Posted Feb 13th 2009 1:10PM by TMZ Staff
Two members of Chuck Mangione's band were among those who died in the plane crash in Buffalo last night.
A publicist for the famous jazz musician identified the band members as Gerry Niewood and Coleman Mellett. Through a rep, Mangione said, "I'm in shock over the horrible, heartbreaking tragedy."
The band was supposed to play a show in Buffalo tonight. That show has been canceled.

NTSB: Plane crew saw significant ice before crash
AP CLARENCE, N.Y. – A federal official says the crew of a commuter plane that crashed near Buffalo discussed "significant ice buildup" on the wings and windshield before the crash. National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Steve Chealander also says the twin turboprop aircraft went through a "severe pitch and roll" after positioning its flaps for a landing.
Continental Connection Flight 3407 from Newark, N.J., was coming in for a landing when it went down in light snow and fog late Thursday. It was a few miles short of Buffalo-Niagara International Airport.
It crashed into a house. Forty-nine people aboard the plane and one person on the ground died.

Whenever I've flown into/out of Chicago's Midway Airport, I'm always surprised to think that there has yet to be a major takeoff/landing disaster at this airport. Anyone who's been to Midway knows exactly what I'm talking about- the entire airport (runways, terminal and all) sits on one square mile of land, with densely populated residential neighborhoods surrounding it.

It can be pretty unnerving, especially in poor weather.

Horrible and scary. One of the passengers was a widow of 9-11 based on what I heard on the news earlier today...

.
Miami Airport is in the middle of the city too. Each time I've been there is like landing on the highway

Yes- in the middle of a snowstorm. If the plane continued even a hundred feet further, it would have crashed into at least 2 or 3 (multi-unit) houses.
The other incident - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Airlines_Flight_553 - miraculously, only two people died on the ground.
If anything resembling what happened in Clarence Center happened on the takeoff/landing approach at Midway, it would be catastrophic, with several dozens of victims on the ground.

I have changed planes at Midway and noticed this ..it is comparable to Lindbergh Field in San Diego where I grew up also in the middle of the city ..back in the 1970s when I was a kid they had always talked about moving it but there it still sits ..Incidentally there was a terrible accident there when I was in high school when a PSA passenger jet was hit by a Cessna as it was nearing the airport crashing into a city neighborhood of North Park killing all on the planes and some on the ground.
