With tour looming, Fleetwood Mac unleashes a barrage of opinions

The Morning Call (http://blogs.mcall.com/lehighvalleymusic/2009/02/the-members-of-fleetwood-mac-have-been-known-to-go-their-own-way-and-during-a-94-minute-teleconference-today-band-members-o.html)

The members of Fleetwood Mac have been known to go their own way, and during a 94-minute teleconference today, band members offered a variety of explanations about why their first tour in four years is being called "Unleashed."

"It's unleashing the furies, unleashing us back into the universe, unleashing an amazing musical entity back into the world," said always ethereal singer Stevie Nicks. "You might have to wear your armor."

Drummer Mick Fleetwood said the tour name was inspired by a comedic "mantra" uttered before Mac live shows on an earlier tour: "Every gig before we would walk on stage, one of our guitarists had this thing he'd say, 'Unleash the hounds! Unleash the hounds!' ... I was remembering that little mantra [when coming up with the tour name] ... It's about not being restricted. ... 'This is us, let us go out and do it.' It's not really that complicated."

"Stevie [Nicks] and I had a go-round on this," said usually reticent bassist John McVie. "I don’t think there was any thought of us being stifled or held back."

The 44-city greatest-hits tour, which begins on March 1 in Pittsburgh, will stop at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia on April 15. Tickets are $49.50, $79.50 and $149.50. But people trying to buy tickets through Ticketmaster have been re-directed to a site that charges between $240 and $1,065 apiece.

When it was my turn to pose a question, I asked if the musicians if they were aware of the ticket scalping. The generally cordial exchange grew tense. Singer-guitarist Lindsey Buckingham said the practice "was a pretty typical thing," adding that "Irving Azoff was quoted in the paper as being against that" and that Azoff, who is part of Fleetwood Mac's management team, "will make sure that kind of thing didn’t happen."

Things got a little more uncomfortable with a follow-up question from a Minneapolis Star Tribune reporter. In light of the bad economy, why did Fleetwood Mac raise the top ticket price to $150, compared to $125 four years ago?

Nicks replied that touring now costs "a gazillion dollars more than four years ago." The last time out, she said, the band and its entire entourage flew in a 738 jet. This time, only band members will be flying in a Gulfstream 400 business jet becausd of fuel and rental costs. "Everybody else will be on the bus," Nicks said. "We wish we didn’t have to charge anything. I wish we could just play. ... But you can be sure that the people on the phone will be making phone calls after we hang up" to find out what is going on with ticket prices.

Fleetwood said the band is "somewhat informed, but not fully informed. ... We're trying to do this the best way that makes sense for our audience. ... We are more than aware the people around us are doing their uppermost to make this a possibility."

This being Fleetwood Mac, there also was talk of the combustible personalities that have fueled both the band's music and tabloid columns. For the moment, there seems to be harmony.

"Lindsey's been in incredibly good humor since we started rehearsing on the 5th of January," Nicks reported. "When Lindsey’s in a good humor, everybody’s happy. Our only problem is that our rehersal time has been messed with a little bit" by family matters.

Added Buckingham: "Knowing that we did not succeed as well as we could have last time we did an album and tour together and on a personal level ... we have something to shoot for that is a little higher. ... We are a group of contradictions ... [but] the whole being greater than the sum of its parts."

Buckingham also said at another point, "Unity is waiting in the wings."

While the tour set list has not been finalized, "Dreams," "Go Your Own Way" and "Don’t Stop" will be performed, said Fleetwood, along with "special songs that aren’t considered massive hits but are emotionally connected with Fleetwood Mac."

Going on the road without a new album to promote "frees you up to enjoy each other as people," said Buckingham. "Let’s have a good time and value the friendships and history ... It takes the pressure off ... and allows more fun than we would normally be able to have."

In conjunction with the tour, Fleetwood Mac's Grammy-winning 1977 album, "Rumors," will be re-issued as part of a special CD/DVD boxed set with uneleased tracks recorded during the making of "Rumors," as well as a DVD with never-before-seen footage of the band.

The album reflected the turmoil of the previous two years -- Fleetwood separated from his wife Jenny; so did McVie and keyboardist-singer Christine McVie and Buckingham and Nicks, although all five remained in the band.

Asked if the re-release might re-open new wounds, Buckingham replied, "Even though we were drawing on our own experiences, I don’t believe the songs on 'Rumors' were so starkly autobiographical. ... It was three writers cross-dialoging with each other. ... The tabloid (quality) of it was only revealed to us by our audience after the fact. ... [Now] you tend to see the irony in the songs ... the heroicism we possessed. We saw ... the music had redemptive power and could be a symbol for other people. The whole struggle had a meaning to it that was symbolic."

Since its original release, "Rumors" has racked up 30 million in sales. Buckingham said he expects the re-issue will sell about 100,000 copies, "maybe."

[B]Here are other comments on various topics made during the interview:

Fleetwood on the possibility of recording a new Fleetwood Mac album:
"My heart believes that all will happen."

Nicks on Christine McVie's continued retirement:
"I’ve been the only girl in Fleetwood Mac since 1998, so I’m used to it now. ... But I miss Christine ... The loss of Christine as one of my best girlfriends was horrific to me ... Not a day goes by that I don’t wish she would call up and say, 'I’m back.' "

Nicks on working as a solo artist versus playing in a band:
"When you’re in a band, you’re not the boss. ... You’re part of a team. ... Do I like not being the boss? No, I really do like being the boss ... After 11 solo albums, you get used to being the boss." But she enjoys being in a band, too. "It's good to be knocked down a little like that. ... It makes you think a little more. ... It makes you humble.

Nicks on when she will record her next solo album:
"Not for a long time. When I am in one relationship, I am not in another one. ... I’m a fragile old grandmother at this point, even though I don’t have grandchildren. I need to stay focused on one thing....

Fleetwood on U2:
"They were an Irish pop band that made all the right moves ... [The group's success] makes me feel good about the music business ... because they are able to do what they do with some sense of integrity."

Nicks on whether she expected to be playing rock 'n' roll when she was 60:
"The answer to that would be yes. I joined Fleetwood Mac when I was 28. I went on tour with my normal street clothes, we didn't have any money. It was a three-month thing. I opened my suitcase and found out I had gained five pounds. I sat down and started to draw an outfit. I said to myself I am going to have a uniform I can wear it today and wear it at 60. I remember it like it was yesterday."

I have to say, that the Philadelphia article made them seem like less heartless bastards than they did in the first article we read.
They did expound on the money issue, even if not giving out concrete info.

So, editing is everything.

Lindsey's in a good mood so everything flows well. Nice to hand over your power to another person's mood. Way to be enlightened, Grandma! (and, I'm saying this because I'm really slightly annoyed with the fragile granny routine because one of the reasons I love and admire Stevie is because, in spite of appearances, I've always considered her a strong, independent woman. Not some shrinking violet in the corner, depending on the moods and whims of others. I don't know where she's going with this new image of hers).

And Lindsey didn't retire the whole is greater than the sum or its parts speech. For some reason, I knew that one was going to come out!
ha! Any day now, we'll be back to cycles.

Yes, believe it or not, the media is biased! Shocker, eh?

It's remarkable that this went on for 94 minutes- I can just imagine all of the juicy tidbits that we have not heard/read about yet. It seems that we have been hearing only the most sensational, scandalous quotes thus far. A bootleg of this tape must emerge...

Also, I am sure Stevie is kidding about the grandmother thing. I'm sure it reads much worse than it sounds; I suspect she offered her trademark dry chuckle after saying that. However, I am just puzzled by her response to the question about her next solo album. It won't be for "a long time?" WTF??? Is she aware that time is running out??

Well, nice to suggest that no one else is moody and no one else's mood interferes with band interactions. But she's always been like that. Lindsey was angry with me. Lindsey was not happy with me. Lindsey was mad at me. It's like the emotion only goes one way, when we know that's not the case. It's a 2 way thing. Well, three or four way. Of course, I think Mick is always good to go, but John loses patience and wants to be elsewhere. Everyone has feelings/moods that effect the others.

Neither of the recent interviews have answered the question I'm DYING to know.... are there any plans to bring the tour to the UK/Europe???

Has anyone heard anything on this?

Isn't it more wasteful only to carry the four of them on a jet?? I mean, as long as you're going to have a private plane and are paying for that fuel, you might as well load as many people on it as possible.

I guess you can get a really small one that just holds the 4 of them. Oh my goodness, I would love to be a stowaway on that plane. Such close quarters would have to bring out the drama. On the way home, I'm sure they just sleep, but on the way there, I'm sure there must be frolicsome times.

I wonder if Lindsey would try to bring that little hand held camera he used with his own band, when he's flying with FM. Turning it on all of them. Of course that would really be annoying for the others. Heck, it's annoying to me.

I like what John said about not thinkng "unleashed" would fit because there hasn't been any question about them having been held back.

I think they will.... In the press release for Micks cd release for North America that came out today - it mentions that Fleetwood Mac are about to embark on a World Tour (for whatever that's worth). Most press mentions a North American Tour. But I'm sure it all depends on how the first round of dates go attendance wise.

Plus, why would they invite an Australian Media outlet to these conference call interview things if they had no plans to possibly go down under? If some of these interview segments start showing up in the British press you can bet they'll be heading over there.

This is just my opinion.

I would imagine the little Jetstream they're flying in will probably be partitioned into little warrens where everyone can hide from each other. I seriously doubt Stevie and Lindsey would be sitting next to each other solving crossword puzzles. But it would be so cool if they used this opportunity to get up there with a few instruments and spend some quality time composing. Ah... one could only dream...

Added Buckingham: "Knowing that we did not succeed as well as we could have last time we did an album and tour together and on a personal level ... we have something to shoot for that is a little higher. ...

I take it LB is referring to the poor sales performance of SYW and the inner tensions of the band during the making of the album and the following tour. The SYW tour itself was a success, was it not? They couldn't have played 135 dates if it weren't making $$. Still it's comforting to hear that they're trying to kick it up a notch, but, judging from his comments, I wonder if he and the band were happy with the way the tour played out.

I'll defer to Luke.... But I remember the album didn't break 1 million in sales... and they actually had to add more dates to make up for the lack of sales (tickets and album units)....

Am I accurate?

They did fine on ticket sales during the SYW tour. They had to take a samller guarantee on the 2004 legs which had a lot of sheds, but overall they made plenty of money touring in 2003-2004.

That reminds me of something that always made me laugh was that old tour footage we have where they're on the plane and Lindsey comes in with Carol Ann and Stevie is musing about whether he should be in first class or not. He goes and sits right in back of her. Couldn't he have found a seat on the other side of the plane?

What was so wrong with SYW? Did they expect it to really sell?? Are they (LB) talking out of both sides of their (his) mouth by praising Tusk because it wasn't a "Rumours II" and not selling a gazillion (to borrow a term from Stevie) copies ... and yet totally dissatisfied with the numbers from SYW? I don't get it. I think SYW is a great work. They should be proud of it. Stevie's menopause must have sucked big time for LB to be complaining about that tour now...

Exactly. I went...10 times? 12? I forget already but A LOT (and I know people who went MANY more times than that).
I think he may be talking about record sales and then hindsight about the personal stuff. I know I was there during the Camden performance (either the last or next to last show of the tour...again, I forget!) and I think he was very nostalgic and thought things were hunky dorey. But, if he has been reading anything, or having heart-to-hearts with Stevie now, she was an unhappy camper and he was a cad, and all that jazz...so, history might not seem as lovely as it did that warm late summer evening.

that's a good point. He did seem really happy and exuberant during that tour which is why his comments now are somewhat perplexing. But it is very possible that, in the moment, he didn't realize a lot of what was being felt around him. You're probably right that these issues came up later, when it was "safe" to bring them up without disrupting the performances.

I agree with Lindsey, I think SYW has some good tunes on it, but as an album it lacks that spark and magic I usually get from a FM record. I thought it was sloppily put together as well. Not to mention the opening track is very un-inspiring.

Also it was painfully obvious that he put his "B" material on SYW and saved the "A" stuff for his solo albums. You would think he would have saved his epically long and eccentric tunes ("Red Rover," "Murrow," "Come") for the solo albums while bringing the more accessible tracks to the band- "Down on Rodeo," "I am Waiting," "The Right Place to Fade," etc. But no... he almost seems to have intentionally sabotaged SYW. That, or he was trying too hard to push FM into experimental territory. In any case, I think if you cherrypicked the best of UTS and GOS and replaced most of Lindsey's songs on SYW, I think it would have been a much stronger album, if not one of their best ever.

I agree - "What's the World Coming To" is weaker than anything from LB's subsequent solo albums.

I completely agree... although I don't think Fleetwood Mac would have included a Rolling Stones cover ("I Am Waiting") on their album.

I agree - "What's the World Coming To" is weaker than anything from LB's subsequent solo albums.

"What's The World Coming To" was a weak early incarnation (or "first draft") of what ended up being a trilogy of kiss-off songs to David Kahne & the meanies at WBR. He subsequently finely tuned his message/sound on songs on his solo albums ("Not Too Late"- its not a coincidence that WTWCT and "Not Too Late" were both album starters- and, to a lesser extent, "Underground")

I'm gonna bite my tongue here. But agreeing on LB "almost intentionally sabotaging SYW" is the most outrageous dumb assumption I've ever read. Ignoring the artistic choices that made Fleetwood Mac Fleetwood Mac is simply brainless. This assumption can only be made by someone who hates Tusk too. The man did NOTHING else on Tusk than he did on SYW. I just can't believe some opinions over here.

Oh, and yes: this is my way of biting my tongue. Don't get me started on this, because I'm about to explode.

Well, I've already elaborated on the petulant biatch Stevie was in '03-'04 (and still is, for that matter), so what's wrong with me acknowledging and agreeing with a post that accurately summed my thoughts up?

I know right. The Stevie bashing is kinda pathetic considering she is a 60 year old woman. Calling her a bitch is by far wayyyyyyy over the top.

There was no way he sabotaged anything.
He was completely involved in SYW-the record and the tour.
I think he has assumptions about what falls in as a more Fleetwood Mac song, as opposed to a Lindsey Buckingham solo effort, but he's not all that wrong about that stuff either. And, if he put some mainstream stuff on there--that's because FM falls under that category lately.

The man was not jaded before the tour. Not at all. I think he was very excited about creating new music with these people. And I don't think he was jaded at the end of the tour. He may be now. He's had a few years of solo work--on his own terms, without anyone playing games with him or giving Mood-O-Meter readings of him to the media, and now he's going back to that. Willingly, but with a different motive this time around.

So, anyway. Now, instead of the music everyone is bitching about here (and I love SYW so I have no complaints), we get rehash of the Hits 2009! Whoo-freaking-hooo.

If you're comparing Tusk to SYW... then What's the World Coming to...

And you know in your heart of hearts... as long as we've known each other and thensome.... I could fart the themes to Tusk and it would still be better than SYW...

"We wish we didn’t have to charge anything. I wish we could just play."

Oh no she didn't. What a lazy ass dishonest b*&#$! It was just last year that her sole stated reason for not doing another album was because fans were stealing from her, OH NOES!

"I can do a solo record, but what will happen is 1,000 hard-core fans will buy it and push the send button and send it to 5 million others. That makes me wonder, why bother? People are stealing our songs."
link (http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net/showthread.php?t=36334)

If she had this "just play" mentality in a studio, she would make an album for creativity's sake, without regard to units sold. And "When I am in one relationship, I am not in another one." might carry more weight if she hadn't been free in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. Hopefully she just is avoiding the truth about why it has been a decade since recording an album, because her stated reasons are caca.

I've pretty much given up hope on another solo record from Stevie so her comments about the subject no longer affect me. However, I thought the exact same thing when I read her latest excuse. Yeah, she recorded and edited Soundstage and put out Crystal Visions but she's had MORE than enough time since 04 to record a solo record, if she truly wanted to. She clearly doesn't. Mr. Buckingham managed to record 2 outstanding records in the same time frame and followed up with 2 tours. Those CD's didn't even go gold. I"m sure personal motivation and career goals differ between SN and LB but my point is almost anything is possible if you're heart is in it.

I don't think she wants to do another solo album - and I'm fine with that.

Fleetwood Mac: On writing, new tour, upcoming album
12:17 PM Tue, Feb 10, 2009 , Posted by: Vanessa Franko

http://blogs.pe.com/features/2009/02/fleetwood-mac-on-writing-new-t.html

I am on a conference call with Fleetwood Mac and I wanted to share some of the tidbits from the call.

The band is doing its first tour in about five years, and its first without a new album. They hit the Honda Center on May 23 and the Staples Center on May 28.

Stevie Nicks said that taking time off for everyone to do solo projects keeps everything going well and the balance keeps everyone happy and uplifted and excited to work together again.

Mick Fleetwood said that there has been talk about an album, but it would come down to "the biorhythms to how everyone is feeling."

Nicks did say that her lyrics come from her journal and that writing lyrics is the hardest part of the song. She doesn't go to the piano until she has her "poems" done.

Also, Lindsey Buckingham just said that Radiohead is a band that means a lot to him, the way they straddle the line between commerce and art.

There does seem to be at least a little bit of that tension that has made Fleetwood Mac timeless (ahem, "Go Your Own Way"), when Nicks talked about how she wouldn't get another woman in the band to act as a buffer between her and Buckingham.

"If Lindsey and I can't work out our problems on our own, we'll throw in the towel," Nicks said.

Buckingham also said that Fleetwood Mac is still "a work in progress."

I guess that's why I refuse to shell out any more of my $$ to see her or Fmac /Eagles in concert (or anyone else for that fact)....They want our $$ but would love to just do 'business' as usual for them. Change nothing do nothing. Boring show. Spend tons of $$ on tickets and merchandise for a crappy show. I don't think so. This may bother some but this kinda attitude bothers me as a music listener. If you can't care to do your very very best than sorry as a listener what's in it for me. I've heard the same songs over and over again ...You have this wealth of material that like never gets played....I'm tired of it and saddend by it all at the sametime. Unfortunately, Stevie & the rest of the band (and any band for that fact ) esp them since well they had made so much $$ at one time....they are in it for the $$ not for the love of 'art' anymore. Or so it seems. Its really a shame. I'm not inspired to see this tour or any. She could release tons of stuff and 'never' have to record anything new ever again. There are all the Masters from her solo lps....demos/outtakes/alternates....etc....but or course 'hell' would have to freeze over for that to happen for her to do that. (her brother probably will though as soon as he can).....No she doesn't owe us anything....but she could 'if' she wanted too. Than there's all her outtake photos too.....endless options really......but we are gonna steal everything.....I don't do anything like that ....even though she probably doesn't recall anything she says after she says it in an interview that one still stings me.....whatever Stevie....whatever.....give me a break....

She says in that interview that it was in El Paso during the first FM tour that she couldn't fit into her dress because she had gained five pounds. El Paso was only her second live show with the band, on May 15, 1975. I bet the reason she gained weight was because she was finally eating right after years of making Hamburger Helper taste different. I recall her saying that after they joined at the beginning of that year, her and Lindsey both started receiving money every week.

I'm with you. This is the first time ever that I have decided to opt out of buying tickets to see them. In a twisted way, I almost want this tour to fail badly. Given the state of the ecomony, and the ridiculously high ticket prices, I don't doubt that at some shows they will be playing to half empty arenas.

I've loved and appreciated Stevie for decades, but I've always known she talks a heck of a lot of sh*t. I can't understand the fans who hang on her every word and think it's the truth...about her relationships, her songs, her history...it's all filtered through her mindset at the moment, and has absolutely no bearing of actual reality.

In regard to her issues about releasing new music: She has mentioned that she gets bummed out when her friends request hearing the demo versions of her songs. She questions why, when she's spent all this money, time and effort in creating the songs in a studio with dozens of musicians.

Well Stevie -- get a damn clue!! Perhaps figure out that your fans would be very happy if you actually released some of these demos. Maybe you could release some albums that feature your songwriting and singing without making a huge production out of it.
