What song lyrics really meant a lot to you, touched you, or you felt identified with?
I enjoyed a lot Escape (Pina colada song) lyrics, It's about a man who, disenchanted with his current relationship, reads the personals and spots an ad that catches his attention: the ad of a woman who is seeking a man that, among other things, must like piņa coladas, and he answers her So I wrote to the paper, Took out a personal ad, And though I'm nobody's poet, I thought it wasn't half bad, "Yes I like Pina Coladas... And getting caught in the rain..."
But 2 songs really touched me. One is Silver Springs, that you perfectly know, and the other is Elton's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. With both songs I felt kind of identified, in different times of my life of course..
It'll take you a couple of vodka and tonics
To set you on your feet again
Maybe you'll get a replacement
There's plenty like me to be found
Mongrels who ain't got a penny
Sniffing for tidbits like you on the ground
So goodbye yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough

Mull of Kintyre
Rhythm of my Heart (by Rod Stewart) even though it has a different meaning. With the bagpipes underneath the lyrics mean something else to me and "never will I roam for I know my place is home" makes me so homesick.

It's a 5 o'clock world when the whistle blows
no one owns a piece of my time
there's a long haired girl who waits I know
to ease my troubled mind, yeah
What a lady....
also I like the line that says: "livin' on money that I ain't made yet."
also: "sounds of the city running through my brain
while another day goes down the drain, yeah, yeah..."

Definitely Grace (the album) has a good few songs where the lyrics just spoke volumes to me... Especially 'Dream, Brother' and 'Lover, You Should Have Come Over.'
Sometimes a man gets carried away, when he feels like he should be having his fun
And much too blind to see the damage hes done
Sometimes a man must awake to find that really, he has no-one..
..I feel too young to hold on,
I'm much too old to break free and run,
Too deaf, dumb and blind to see the damage I've done.
so beautiful...:)

Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5JkHBC5lDs
Very haunting and emotional.
These mist covered mountains
Are a home now for me
But my home is the lowlands
And always will be
Some day youll return to
Your valleys and your farms
And youll no longer burn
To be brothers in arms
Through these fields of destruction
Baptisms of fire
Ive watched all your suffering
As the battles raged higher
And though they did hurt me so bad
In the fear and alarm
You did not desert me
My brothers in arms
Theres so many different worlds
So many differents suns
And we have just one world
But we live in different ones
Now the suns gone to hell
And the moons riding high
Let me bid you farewell
Every man has to die
But its written in the starlight
And every line on your palm
Were fools to make war
On our brothers in arms

Turn down the lights, turn down the bed
Turn down these voices inside my head
Lay down with me, tell me no lies
Just hold me close, dont patronize - dont patronize me
Chorus: cause I cant make you love me if you dont
You cant make your heart feel something it wont
Here in the dark, in these lonely hours
I will lay down my heart and Ill feel the power
But you wont, no you wont
cause I cant make you love me, if you dont
Ill close my eyes, then I wont see
The love you dont feel when youre holding me
Morning will come and Ill do whats right
Just give me till then to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight
Chorus: cause I cant make you love me if you dont
You cant make your heart feel something it wont
Here in the dark, in these lonely hours
I will lay down my heart and Ill feel the power
But you wont, no you wont
cause I cant make you love me, if you dont

Nick Cave, "The Ship Song"
Come sail your ships around me
and burn your bridges down.
We make a little history, baby,
every time you come around.
Come loose your dogs upon me
And let your hair hang down.
You are a little mystery to me
every time you come around.
We talk about it all night long.
We define our moral ground.
But when I crawl into your arms
everything comes tumbling down.
Chorus: Come sail your ships around me
and burn your bridges down.
We make a little history, baby,
every time you come around me.
Your face has fallen sad now
For you know the time is nigh
when I must remove your wings
and you...you must try to fly...
Here's a clip of Nick doing this song live on the Songwriters Circle he did with John Cale and Chrissie Hynde:

There is a song by the Sundays, one of my favorite bands, called Life Goes On. I can totally relate to its lyrics on many levels. Life goes on was a b-side from the Static and Silence sessions, goes like this:
Build me up, don't get me down
weather the storm
well, life goes on
feelings ebb and flow by hour
you're up in the clouds
then you sink like a stone
so do you feed yourself with pills
oh to deaden your ills
or are you only one love short of happiness
and in a picture on the wall
no glimmer of yourself at all
you've left yourself far away
build me up, don't mop my brow
weather the storm? no
because life goes on
it's my only hope right now
to soar like a bird
and not to sink like a stone
so do you feed yourself with pills
oh to deaden your ills
or are you only one love short of happiness
and in a picture on the wall
no glimmer of yourself at all
you've left yourself far away
oh do you feed yourself with pills
to cure you of your ills
or are you only one love short of the happy days to come
and in a picture on the wall
you can' see the face at all
so untie yourself
because that's all you've got to do
and I can grow a pair of wings
and I can take up flying
ther'll be no crying
up in the air looking back down
and let me tell you
if I talk about gloom
i don't get out of feeling down
it strips you of yourself
and splits you from the self that you know

There's so many from Fleetwood Mac, but one that springs to mind is from Destiny Rules.
'It's not being together, it's just following the rules'
Pure brilliance that one

I love this song and most of Nick Cave's music. It reminded me of another song that gets me every time.
Come on up to the house - Tom Waits. Here's a clip someone made of it.

I especially love the lyrics "come down off the cross we can use the wood" and "the world is not my home I'm just passin' through"

Yeah! Come on, come on, come on, come on
Now touch me, baby
Can't you see that I am not afraid?
What was that promise that you made?
Why won't you tell me what she said?
What was that promise that you made?
Now, I'm gonna love you
Till the heavens stop the rain
I'm gonna love you
Till the stars fall from the sky for you and I
Come on, come on, come on, come on
Now touch me, baby
Can't you see that I am not afraid?
What was that promise that you made?
Why won't you tell me what she said?
What was that promise that you made?
I'm gonna love you
Till the heavens stop the rain
I'm gonna love you
Till the stars fall from the sky for you and I
I'm gonna love you
Till the heavens stop the rain
I'm gonna love you
Till the stars fall from the sky for you and I
Stronger than dirt

Oh, I love Tom Waits, too! Excellent choice.
I can listen to Cave forever and not run across anything I don't like (unless it's his cover of Leonard Cohen's "Tower of Song," because that was just WRONG).

Everytime I hear WHY by Annie Lennox, I am deeply moved.
WHY was a song that followed me all my Europe backpacker trip, in may 1992 when I was 25. I traveled alone, I enjoyed it, but being alone abroad one month is hard. At cities where I stayed in a room with TV (not several) or watching at the lobby, at the end of the day, MTV Europe that month played WHY lot of times, and it became my favorite.
Sorry for bringing them up again, but the Connells, '74-'75:
Got no reason for coming to me and the rain running down.
There's no reason.
And the same voice coming to me like it's all slowin down.
And believe me -
I was the one who let you know
I was your sorry-ever-after. '74-'75.
It's not easy, nothing to say 'cause it's already said.
It's never easy.
When I look on in your eyes then I find that I'll do fine.
When I look on in your eyes then I'll do better.
I was the one who let you know
I was your sorry-ever-after. '74-'75.
Giving me more and I'll defy
'Cause you're really only after '74-'75.
Got no reason for coming to me and the rain running down.
There's no reason.
When I look on in your eyes then I find that I'll do fine.
When I look on in your eyes then I'll do better.
I was the one who let you know
I was your sorry-ever-after. '74-'75.
Giving me more and I'll defy
'Cause you're really only after '74-'75.

It's such a beautiful song. Most of the time though, when I hear it come on iTunes, i have to skip over it. It punches me in the stomach every time I hear it.
