January 20, 2009

I wrote this poem last February while I was in Chicago editing my PBS soundstage film. For two months I watched the race for the Democratic nomination in his City and decided in my heart that he was the one. I went to bed one night and had this dream about the Kennedy Brothers and Martin Luther King. I sent this poem off to Senator Kennedy when I heard he was ill~ I wanted him to have it. People have asked me “what is this dream about~?” My answer has always been “something about Barack Obama made me feel the hope and love I felt from the Kennedy’s and from Dr. King. My subconscious mind created this amazing dream. The dream hands the torch to Mr. Obama.
“Do not forget what we were fighting for!”
I believe he will not forget.

And so, as a poet and a writer of songs~ I dedicate this poem that was inspired by him~
to him~
Our brave new
President…

John and Bobby and Martin
Would be so proud~

With Love,
Stevie Nicks

The Kennedy’s

I had a fragile dream
In a great house in the Hamptons
I’d been there before
Singing songs ~ doing benefits
I was in a room alone
Putting on my make-up
Like so many things have come to me,
The dress ~ came across the Persian carpet~
As I fell into the dress
A thought came to me
Into my heart~
“I have a dream”
And a door opened~
It’s time now~ they’re waiting
I turned around to face the music (the dreamers)
“I’m ready for the Kennedy’s~”

I don’t know if it was 1960 or 1963
Everything was timeless ~ even me
I wasn’t old~ I wasn’t young~
I was just ~ part of the dream.
A shadow walked with me ~ down the hall
It was Martin Luther King~
All in shadow ~ all before me
Overwhelmed by destiny
Someone said, “sing us a song”
“There’s the piano..
And handed me a drink~
The room was full of hope~
A song would set them free…

I sat at the piano
I stared at the shadows
I sang the words “I have a dream”
He wasn’t my old friend John ~ I didn’t know him…then
But he smiled at me
And I sang these words
“What ever it takes to be free”
I didn’t know these men~
But they knew me~

It was all symbolic,
Nothing was as it seemed.
They all left us in a single shot~
But they didn’t take the dream.
They were there in that house,
Discussing the future~
Drinking champagne.
I was just the piano player~
The voice ~ part of their dream.
I was 35 ~ or maybe I was 15~
It was just a night in the presence
Of Martin Luther King~
I was just a dreamer;
I was ready for the Kennedys…

I got up from the piano
I bowed my head
As I walked thru the room
They touched my hands
Write about hope and a change of plan~
Light up the world if you can~

Light the fire ~ start it over
Tell the world about the dream
Change the world ~ begin again
Start it up ~ make it real~
Back in the room where it all began
My heart began to hurt~

I remember the beauty of the Hamptons
The shadows playing in the sun
And a voice said “The dream is not over~”
“The dream has just begun~”
I spun around to another shadow
Slipping through the door~
My eyes opened ~ wide …
What is all this for?
The shadows said ~ “Don’t forget ~”
“What we were fighting for…”

She is abstract in her thoughts. I followed her words, but got lost in the symbolism. This, amoung many things, has me in tears today. I know that things will change. I have praid for this new day.

THANKS for bringing this poem to my attention. I had visited the site earlier and didn't notice. This completes the experience. I am thankful that Stevie shared it with us. The dream.

It's a new day, my friends. I don't think change will happen immediately, it will take time. I do think that this is the beginning. I am glad to be apart of this world and know that I am sharing it with so many others. On any level, Bush is gone. For that, I am thankful. LOL

Did anyone else notice how nervous President Obama was? I felt bad for him. At one point, I think, I noticed him shaking. I laughed, between tears of happiness.

Great to see she can grasp the whole thing within her poetry,
She is amazing and writes beautifully.

It is amazing that that is a year old, but seems so appropriate for a historic day like today!

Now if only she could get around to recording that would be a momentous change!!!!

Wow... I'm just speechless... I don't know whether this is brilliant ~ or incredibly ~ self-indulgent. In any case, this is classic Stevie- writing a poem in her inimitable surreal impressionism. The individual lines are obtuse and indecipherable, but in a bizarre way, by taking in the poem as a whole, I get what she is trying to convey. It's almost brilliant how she can blur the lines between dream, reality and even persona, e.g., the way she goes in and out of MLKs body ~ like a ghost... And I like the way she indirectly compares herself as a singer/pianist singing songs of hope to a preacher preaching about hope or a president speaking about hope. Again, very odd, very self-indulgent... but also kinda brilliant. And I love how she dropped in that line from "Straight Back" oh so effortlessly. :p

I could just picture Ted Kennedy reading this poem and wondering whether it was the tumor talking...

Oh... and what's up with all of these Hamptons references? Yes, the lesser-known Kennedys have a compound in East Hampton. Ted and John were based in Hyannis... but maybe Robert was from East Hampton? I dunno... My only recollection is that a few years ago Stevie, Don Henley and Roger Waters performed at a Hamptons benefit for the Southampton Youth Tennis Foundation (or something like that)... So maybe she was having a dream about that concert that somehow got mixed in with the dead Kennedys and MLK...

Anyway, Stevie is welcome to perform at my Hamptons house anytime!

I was driving to work today and having my mother who was on the phone (hands free) describe what people looked like on tv and I asked her about Ted Kennedy. She said he looked well, but was using a cane. He had a bald spot on one side of his hair after his surgery and I asked if she could still see it and she told me he was wearing a hat.

So, I thought about him all the rest of the way to work and I was crying, but not in a sad way, more like a daydreaming way. I was thinking that the family has already lost Eunice, essentially, because the last strokes have disabled her so much. So, I was thinking that Jean Kennedy would be the last one and what a sad, lonely feeling that must be, even though she has children of her own. The loss of Ted, basically her last sibling, will be devastating.

Anyway, thinking of that all the way to work, then getting to the office and learning that Ted Kennedy collapsed and NOW reading this poem. It all feels surreal.

I like the way the dress kind of floated across the room, over the Persian carpet, and she fell into it.

Oh and as for Straight Back, since it has so recently been in her memory, maybe that increases its odds as a setlist candidate. It would be great if Vegas took bets on the setlist.

Hours and hours of waiting this way . . .

A little clunky and wandering poem, and self-serving , as is the expected Stevie style.

I just wish, with all the liberties she takes with the English language, that she would understand the use of an apostrophe by now. Instead of the title, "The Kennedys," she writes the posessive "The Kennedy's...which means The Kennedy's something or other. I'm a little embarassed for her.

I like the poem because it's a challenge:

What is all this for?
The shadows said ~ “Don’t forget ~”
“What we were fighting for…”

The dream is that of a person steeped in a particular American mythology and set of associations (and, as always, particular experiences -- the dress thing is actually quite wonderful). But the idea of challenge, not to forget and to continue the fight, is not banal. In other words, it's a poem about how one confronts these new images in the political atmosphere and takes from them an enduring meaning. blahblah.

If she is so inspired politically to write am extensive poem, I hope that inspires her write, record and release new songs. Given the inspiration Obama has provided her, maybe she'll put out an album something of the sorts like Bruce Springsteen's 'Born in the USA."

Obama is refered to as an agent of change. Stevie is long due to be a songwriter of change, because, in her words, "It's all the same. All the same. All the same!"

You do realise you have just criticised her for the misplacement of an apostrophe, something that could easily be a typo, and you yourself have just misspelled "possessive" and "embarrassed"?

Oh the irony.

But anyway, Born In The USA was about Springsteen's disillusionment with the American dream so unless Stevie becomes disappointed with Obama it's unlikely she'll be inspired to write a similar album given her endorsement of him in that message.

Well, that could be a typo from whoever transcribed. Let's not assume Stevie screwed up the punctuation. I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt on that one.

I agree completely. I really doubt Stevie posted the message herself on the Nicks Fix.

I think it's really cool to see that she DOES still care about us, even if her website is really ****ty. And that it's true that she DOES write, no matter how bad/good it is. Keep the creative juices flowing!

I think it was a little choppy, but there were parts of it that were really great. I like how she used a little bit of the "Straight Back" lyrics too.

And as for the apostrophe thing ~ it's not really a big deal. And I agree, it isn't like she went on her computer and typed that up. :/

Cheers everyone!

I had a similar experience today, like you did about Ted Kennedy. This afternoon when I was watching the coverage on t.v. when they announced that Ted Kennedy was there, I was axiously waiting to see him and to see how good he was getting around. She probably waited because she didn't want to sway or upset her fans who did not agree with her politically. I'm glad she waited, because as someone who voted for McCain, i would have been a bit peeved that she didn't wait until after the election to express her opinion of Obama. I respect her alot for doing it the way she did.

I know what you mean, but at the same time, I wouldn't refrain from discussing my political views just because I thought someone would be influenced by them. I think the fault lies in the people who chose to believe certain views just because they like a celebrity, unless of course the celebrity takes advantage of that.

What do they mean "where was she during the campaign?" I hate artists when they stray into politics. Bono, Crow, Striesand have all managed to make me throw up and I'm a Democrat. Just because they are creative does not mean they have good judgement and I'm always suspicious of their motives. (Do they want press time? Are they trying to network with other like artists to further their careers? Do they think they are smarter than everyone else?) At least, Stevie kept her opinions to herself until now, which shows she was sincere.

I personally respect that Stevie as a celebrity was able to keep it personal as to who she voted for...I felt no compunction during this election to reveal to anyone who I intended to vote for, that's why the ballot is secret...democracy should never be swayed by the masses, each vote should be independent and not unduly influenced...

It does still show a willingness to share experiences with her fans.

I don't think you can automatically assume that she chose one or the other- all she is saying is that she knew instinctively in her gut that Obama was the one, regardless of her personal political beliefs. And on a historic day like this, when the country and the developed world is quickly going to hell in a hand basket, all we can really do is just hope that somehow the president can get us out of this mess, regardless of who it is.

I think that she was talking about a feeling she had that he would be the one. At least she wasn't out there promoting Sarah Palin. Honestly, I am just glad that Stevie wasn't being political with us. She kept us where we belonged at her concerts... enveloped in her love and music. It's supposed to be "The Kennedy's HOUSE." It's a common short-hand method of talking in a friendly manner. The dream concerned events at a fictional house belonging to the Kennedys in the Hamptons - And so, "The Kennedy's [house]."

The Kennedy's dream?

She probably waited because she didn't want to sway or upset her fans who did not agree with her politically. I'm glad she waited, because as someone who voted for McCain, i would have been a bit peeved that she didn't wait until after the election to express her opinion of Obama. I respect her alot for doing it the way she did.

Yes, the best thing Stevie can do is stay out of politics. She has fans who did not vote Obama as well and don't see this election as a fabulous thing. But we still love Stevie.

Well, that's if you believed it to be unbelievable. I never doubted a person of color could be our president. This has not amazed me. His politics concern me, not his skin color.

Besides, the vision of Stevie hanging out with MLK playing the piano is kind of hilarious. I think Stevie just has a good heart and isn't all that into the details of politics.

I don't even live in the US. I also don't assume someone is politically ignorant just because they have different views to myself. I'm not saying that Stevie is an intellectual by all means, but I'm pretty sure it's documented that Stevie has donated to the Democrats in the past, so at the very least they represent her political leanings and she made an informed decision to actually give them money.

If so many of her fans were so sensitive about it I'm surprised more of them didn't throw out their collections when Fleetwood Mac allowed Bill Clinton to use their song for his campaign and appeared at his inauguration. But if it makes you feel better and allows you enjoy her music more believing that Stevie would have the same views as you if only she were more informed, then I'm happy for you.

Can we please not turn this into a political issue? This isn't the place. Stevie doesn't discuss her political views publically 'cuz she's about music and not politics. Bill Clinton chose a Mac song as his campaign theme and the band was there to represent the song, not the political views of the Clintons.

Comments had been made about nothing new in terms of songs and poetry from Stevie and she brought one out to share and that's what I thought this thread was about.

Lol, like you have to live here to have an opinion. This is a woman who thought the "Paper or plastic?" question from Jay Leno meant cash or credit card.
Hello? We're talking about Stevie here.

Well it is an amazing event even if you had no doubts that a black man could be elected.

Stevie has this airy fairy rep but watch her speak in the Destiney Rules doc. She could be running a record label no doubt. Smart woman. I believe a lot of people underestimate her hence her problems with men/record labels, etc.

Lol. Oh don't worry, unless Stevie was walking around waving a Nazi flag, I could give two hoots about where she stood politically. Which is kinda the point. Just like you and I, she still has the right (and this is after the election afterall, when most people are hopeful) to say what she believes or even write a (rather eye-rolling) poem about it.

She has always had an eerily prescient quality in some of her songs. Trouble In Shangri La for instance fit the citcumstances of 911 perfectly IMO yet was supposedly written in 1994. So did Space Needle.

TISL the *song* was about 9/11?
she wrote that in 94? seriously?

No no...TISL was released in 2001. Even though the song was in part based on the OJ Simpson trial, to this listener it seems that somehow Stevie has managed to release a song that fit perfectly with that period of time. Stevie herself has never said anything about TISL and 9/11. She has said that at times her writing does seem to be portentous. Here are the passages from the song that I feel fit in so well with what I (and probably many others) felt post 9/11:

I hear there's trouble in Shangri-La
I run through the grass
I run over the stones
Down to the sea
Show me the way back, honey
I hear there's trouble in Shangri-La
I run through the grass
I run over the stones
Show me the way back...to the sea

With honor be it spoken
To understand this light that we carry
And let it light your way
Of course, you know, I generally take it

(snip)

You can consume all the beauty in the room, baby
I know you can, I've seen you do it
And it brings up the wind
And it rises around you in pillars of color

But the promise has been broken
As you walk through the shadow of death
You try to see no evil
But you are heartbroken
You say, dear God, make it stop!

Before the dawn of separation
Brings up the wind
Rises around you
I hear there's trouble in Shangri-La
Pillars of color
Trouble in Shangri-La
I make accommodations for you

I guess we don't believe
That things could go that far
We all believe in people...
That we think believe in God
Somewhere in the night...
Someone feels the pain
The ones who walk away
Try to love again...

Yeah, she said she did that as early as Rose Garden. Her words came true. Or POTU she said it's funny how she has always lived alone.

Yes, Jannie, she often cited the Simpson case. Once she said:

Well the whole, actual concept of the record came from the last two months of the OJ Simpson trial. And it is not about OJ Simpson. It is about the situation of how sad it is when people, you know, make it to the top of their field. Whether it’s, you know, a doctor, a lawyer, an Indian chief, a rock star, a disc jockey, whatever it is, you know, when you kind of make it to the top of your field and how difficult it is to stay there and how hard it is to hold on to that. And I thought, well, you know this would be a good concept, because I know a lot of people who have made these mistakes, in a much lesser degree, but, nevertheless, similar. And so I just said, 'I’m going to call this record "Trouble in Shangri-La"'.

I agree on several levels here....and of course no purposeful offense to anyone :)

ONE...I don't think that poem was great...she has done a million times better. It sucked.

TWO....(Though I am personally sick of hearing Obama crap everywhere i go)....
I agree that this still should stray away from any political issue.

Kinda like when Linda Ronstadt opened her mouth at a live show a few years back....people and critics hounded her for it, since fans come to hear the music....tht is all.

As far as this poem/dream goes, I don't really know what to make of it. The imagery is beautiful and I guess it's one of those things where if I'm meant to get it I will. ;)
To paraphrase Christine from about ten years ago, it sounds great but I'm not sure what the hell she's talking about. :o Although I do relate to the "dream" theme.
