My pledge is that by Feb. 15, 2009 I'll lose ten pounds from my

I'm 5'5" and damn near 180 - I gained five pounds over the Xmas holiday; this is the most I've ever weighed.
On the other hand, I am exercising more now than I probably ever have in my life (which may not be saying much). 145 is about where I want to be - haven't been to that neighborhood in at least five years. :distress:

Wow. My best friend is 5'8' and 130 and she is skinny as hell. She was down to 124 at one point and she looked sick. A bunch of us convinced her she need to put on a few pounds. 5'8" and 120 usually doesn't look healty. I saw you at the LB show in October and you looked healthy then. Everything ok?

^Well, since you've chimed in... I never said she wasn't fit. I said she looked healthy. Healthy is a positive word. It's my opinion that gals who are 5'8'' and 120 pounds usually look underweight and sometimes even ill. I didn't think she did. That's all I'm saying.

I aint telling my weight under any circumstances but the "impossible to miss" comment made me laugh. I am going to the Mohegan Sun Concert with someone I have never met, but who's nickname is "Morris the Fat". Lord knows I'm no one to talk, but I imagine he/we will be hard to miss. I do feel sorry for the people in the seats near us, he asked me to get aisle seats but I couldnt find one within reasonable distance of the stage so I advised him to start dieting immediately.

I've lost about 50 lbs since around this time 2006. I think I'm around 165 n0w. I was very, very unhappy back then and would just stuff my pie-hole with all the wrong stuff (donuts, cakes, pie, bottles of Coca-Cola) etc. Horrendous. Oh, and never exercise either.
I decided to try to take control, and I think I did a good job so far.
I cut back on sweets and fat dramatically, only eating them as occasional treats. I eat loads of fiber, fruits and veggies. Plus, I do TONS of walking for exercise. True, I probably should do some weight-bearing exercise too, or get my heart rate up higher. But, it seems to be working and I feel great.
I actually had to be worked up at a cardiologist at one point: I used to get chest pains from climbing stairs and other exertion. Arteries are clear based on a catheterization they did, and he said "try to lose some weight".
p.s, I'm around 5' 10"

I'm trying to lose weight, but I keep gaining it. I lift weights twice a week & do cardio the other days. The more muscular I get, the heavier I get. But there's a spring in my step, a lithe bounce & boing! I'm a lot like Tigger now.

Ugh, I know exactly what you mean. Even when I'm down to my Auschwitz/Ghandi weight I still have what looks like "love handles"... but it's really just my broad hip bones.
I'm not entirely sure what I weigh at the moment. My guess is 205-210. Which is damned close to the most I've ever weighed. But I am 6'3", and have a large build... broad shoulders, thick chest, etc. My ideal weight is around 180ish. I've been down as low as 160 looked like a Stage 4 cancer patient... and I've been up past 220 too. Oddly enough, I don't look that much different when I gain weight... being tall has it's advantages. More area to spread out all the fat, more places for it to hide!

5'7 and 120. I'm kind of torn on what to do with my body at this point. 125 seems to be the weight that I float at if I don't eat well or exercise. My body naturally has an exaggeratedly small waist, but at 125, my legs aren't as toned as I would like, and my stomach not quite as flat. I can get myself down to 117 fairly easily with exercise, but I can't decide if I want to put in the effort to be noticeably that tiny, or if I want to eat whatever I want for the rest of the break and still be in good shape, though not as impressivealy so, when I get back to school. I realize this whole post probably seems ridiculous. Practical application: I can't decide if I want to go downstairs and have homemade chocolate chip cookies for breakfast. I think I do.
Edit with a question: Has anyone's base weight that they float at changed? I used to be naturally heavier than I am now, not by much, but without exercise, I would be around 135. In college, though, those ten pounds just disappeared. Is it an age thing? My lifestyle hasn't changed at all.

I'm the happiest with my body, that I've ever been in my life!
I'm 5'10". And since I was about 10, I've always been at least 15-20 lbs overweight(usually about 180-185). Well, **** rolls downhill. Cut to three years ago, and I was up to 215. Now, I don't really have a big frame, although people actually (did) think of me as a pretty big guy. Well, three years ago, at a family dinner, my big mouthed aunt(one of those, who blurts out anything that crosses her mind), said, "David, you're just getting too fat, and you need to do something about it!" Well, god bless her big mouth! So, I lost about 30-35, and got down to about 180. Much better, but still not where I wanted to be. But, I lived with that weight comfortably, until about last August. Relationship-wise, I'd been alone forever, and finally decided that I was tired of being alone. Well, that decision alone, allowed me to REALLY start calorie counting, and laying down some Nazi laws for myself. I only eat red meat about once a week now. I love salad anyway, and about 5 days a week, I only have a big salad for dinner. And I drink at least 2 liters of water, every afternoon.
I just woke up now, and got on the scales........151!!!!!!!!! I've not weighed 151 since probably 7th grade. Last weekend, I had the ultimate compliment of my life, when a friend said, "look at you....you're scrawny!" And while "wonderful humanitarian" would be a nicer compliment....for someone who's had a lifelong battle with weight, "scrawny" felt like victory!:blob2:
I've become a clothes WHORE, in the past couple of months, finally able to buy clothes that show my body, not hide it! No more black shirts for me! My favorite shirts(that I've been scouring Goodwill's for,) are American Eagle Outfitter polo shirts, "vintage fit". They fit snug(without being too snug). And no more XL's for me...mediums, and some SMALLS fit! And in jeans, I'm wearing 29 and 30" waist. Again, hello 7th grade size!
I've made a new me, and I'm thrilled with this new chassis!
Btw, no drugs(I've heard several "lay off the cocaine" jokes), no diet pills, nada. Just a Nazi willpower, to reinvent myself.

NO idea what my float weight is anymore. Having a kid screws everything up, you have no clue what's normal anymore.
As for you, missy, 117 is too thin bordering on unhealthy, IMO. What if you focused more on weight training for health reasons/toning as opposed to cardio? Do you still lose weight with just weights?

I think I'm ready. It's just finding someone. And I don't know where to go or start. I just keep telling myself it's gonna happen when it's supposed to.
And I'm not a BIG girl... but I'm not skinny like I used to be. I want to lose weight because I'm built just like my dad, and now I'm seeing him turning into a diabetic and have heart problems. I don't want that problem.
Yeah, I know.
I can't help it, in that I like em younger than me. Do you know what I told my friend, the other night? I said, "I feel good about who I am now, for the first time in a long time! And I'm willing to endure some rejection, for the possibility of meeting the right one." So I'm just throwing myself on their mercy:laugh:, letting them know that I'm a nice, trustworthy guy. And it's been paying off for me. Slow and steady wins the race.
I lack self-confidence....when I was heavy, I COULDN'T do that. I couldn't!
And after a three month breakup, with the one I've liked the most, we had an email makeup, over Christmas break. I picked her up at the airport in Indy, last night. And things went well. Thus, my lack of sleep today.
And I know you're not obese. You know, look at my cholesterol numbers. The #1 health issue in this country, is the obesity epidemic! And believe me, I know how hard the battle is! I've fought it since about 8th grade!
Do your girls have weight issues? Because I'm sure it makes it harder, if they love to eat, too!

Well, I'm happy for you that you "kissed" and made up! haha!
The girls... well, both of them took after my husband. When he was a kid, he was BIG!!! He started slimming down when he was about 16/17. Samantha is 17, and she's starting to slim down. She was what she called "the fat kid" in elementary and junior high, but I think she looks great now. Sara is just like the both of them. She's a big girl for 11. I just measured her, and she's 5'1", and last dr. visit she weighed around 130. So, she's a big girl as well. But I know she'll grow into that, and be thin in a few years. What kills me is that I don't feed them junk, cook with grease and butter, or buy cookies and candy.
(I couldn't believe I just measured her at 5'1"!!! 2 more inches and she'll be as tall as me!)

Hmm, I've never tried weights, but that's not a bad idea. You were right to guess that I usually just do cardio, and the pounds fly off when I do. It's not about the number, though, I'd really just like to be toned.
Paula, am I right to remember that you made a big effort to get in shape a few years ago and really kicked ass doing it? I haven't read this whole thread, so maybe you've even already talked about it here, but I'm sure people would be helped by your story if you wouldn't mind sharing it.

Dude, all I can say is, I was not getting laid by 21 and 22yo's, before. I now have no problem. I'm rollin' on about 3-4 hours of sleep today! :D
Let me improve your quote, "Nothing tastes as good as a 21yo pie*e of ***!"
AND, btw, let me add, my doctor has been threatening me with cholesterol meds, for the past year. Went two weeks ago.....guess what? I don't NEED EM! Cholesterol has dropped 41 points, through weight loss only. Doctor said, "whatever you're doing, keep it up!"
So, you're a nurse, is there actually something wrong, with getting too thin?
I really shouldn't have been so negative in my response to your post. Better to be on the lighter end of normal weight than overweight, that's for sure. And my husband isn't skeleton skinny or anything, he's just not beefy. :D Course, I like tall thin men who look like they're 17, so it's all good with me.
And too thin? I would only worry if you started obsessively watching every single thing you ate & freaked out if you gained 5 pounds. The fact that you kind of forgot about it & lost the rest of the weight is probably a good thing. Sounds like you simply changed the way you live/eat & this is now your normal. Good for you. The lower cholesterol is awesome. As long as you're eating a pretty balanced diet, I personally don't see an issue.
Maria, thank you so much.
Maria, I had my heart broken, yeaaarrs ago. And completely just gave up. Well, I was on vacation in August, and I just woke up one morning, and all of the sudden, I KNEW, that minute, that I was wasting my life, and that it was time to move on. The decision was that quick, like a light bulb being turned on!
I hope that you find that light bulb, as soon as you're ready! :xoxo:
You know....not that someone wouldn't/shouldn't/couldn't love you, just the way you are. For me, this weight loss has nothing to do with "them". F*** them! :D (I'm kidding). But it IS about me. Only me. Feeling better about myself.
Good for you, dude. Seriously.

The Core Secrets workout did wonders to tone my body. I suppose any similar routine would do the same thing. You really only need 20-30 min 2 or 3 days a week in my experience.
No, you recall correctly. I was between 10-20 pounds overweight pretty much since high school. I'd lose a few, gain it back eventually. Never was obsessed with my body or depressed about it or anything, but about 3 years ago I realized I just didn't feel good. Felt out of shape & weak. Didn't want to follow my parents down the road to obesity, high blood pressure & diabetes.
I started doing Weight Watchers - didn't join, just figured out the points system (well, copied it from a few friends that had joined) & followed it. Started doing 30-45 min of cardio 4-5 days a week, and weight/resistance exercises 2-3 times a week. Do most of my workouts in front of the TV, watching shows on the DVR.
I wanted to lose 15 pounds initially & ended up losing about 23. Reached an ideal weight for my height, and my cholesterol levels dropped too. I got so toned, I saw muscles I had never seen on my body in my life (literally!) After about 6 months it wasn't a weight loss program anymore, it became my normal life. Still is. Kept the weight off for over 2 years.
Now I'm back at it to lose the baby weight. Doing well so far - slow & steady wins the race. I'd like to get back into all the clothes I bought over those 2 years. Not too concerned with an exact number on the scale, but I figure about 10 more pounds should do it. If I drop it by my birthday in April, I'll be quite happy. it's been a lot easier than I thought it would be. WW really did make me change my lifestyle - it's NOT a diet anymore. Hasn't been for a long long time. This is just the way I eat now.

I'm 5'7 and somewhere around 150 - 154. (I've just had to convert this from stones to pounds!) I'm not overweight, I've just worked out my BMI to be 24.1 - I definitely feel overweight though. I'd like to lose about 28lbs. I've got really skinny legs and wrists and a relatively thin waist. I tend to get bigger boobs and hips when I put weight on straight away, so I can always tell when I need to cut back on food!

Even though I'm a guy, that's me, too. For years, people "thought" I was a pretty big guy, until they'd see me in shorts, and call me "chickenlegs" My arms and legs are really pretty small, so I never carried weight well. All gut, neck, and face.

I think what really upsets me is the fact that when I was young (oh God) my proportions were literally perfect. 36-26-36. I was 118, 5'3", and a size 7. Between not losing the weight from when I was pregnant, and then getting a job where I sat on my ass and ate all the time, I've managed to put on an extra 60 pounds, give or take. It's awful. I need to become motivated again and lose the weight. It's upsetting...

I think that's probably a plus as well though, because legs and arms are harder to lose weight off than the belly or face. My love handles are evenly distributed all over my body.
Like I said, I've got big hips and boobs. The sad thing is, if I lose any weight (like I have the past couple of weeks off being ill, so I could be lighter than what I said) it comes straight off the boobs.

I would guess, that it's probably harder, losing weight, when you have kids. So, even if you don't have a love life, you still have a family life, so your time is consumed, just being with them. Being alone, I think, makes it much easier. Also, you have to cook for them.
One thing that helped me, I think, is that I've continually bought new clothes as I've lost weight. Sometimes, clothes that are a little too small. I call that, a "motivational shirt"!:p (I've not spent a whole lot.....I've learned that I'm not too good for Goodwill - plus, if you really watch at GW, you can get some nice clothes, cheap)

I'm actually very underweight right now - around 125 pounds - I lost a LOT of weight when my Mom was ill. But it's starting to come back now; I'm eating well and beginning to think about working out again and beginning to feel stronger. My optimal weight is probably around 150 pounds and I think I'll probably be back in that ballpark by the end of the year.

Yes, to those who asked I had a baby girl in September.
I find that increased protein helps me too - keeps me full longer & helps with toned muscles. I don't really do "low carb " but I try to eat more whole grains & stuff like that, while increasing my protein.
Higher fiber foods keep me full longer too. If I eat cereal with less fiber, I'll be hungry in an hour. High fiber cereal? I'm good for 3 or 4.
Also, I eat something every 3 or 4 hours so I'm not famished & gorging myself. A piece of fruit, some yogurt or cheese, etc. between meals holds me over.

Marissa.... stop bitching. Of all people on this earth, you are the one who is not allowed to complain.

There's one thing that I have to admit I have difficulty understanding.
Don't get me wrong, anyone, I know it's
often difficult to lose weight, etc., and I realize that some things
are genetic and can't be helped. Here's what I have to honestly
admit that I have a little trouble with though - - -
It's after the first one thousand pounds. Now . . . 750 pounds I can undersand... Even one thousand. But somewhere between the neighborhood between 1,000 and 1,500 pounds, I start to become a little politically incorrect and start to run out of sympathy. Sorry, but shouldn't the first thousand pounds be a little bit of a waker-upper? A sign that maybe one should get to the doctor or something???? Even, I dunno, go on a DIET or something? :blob1:

Yes, more or less. There are a lot of "green itineraries" in the woods for those who want to walk, run or something else. I used to walk my dog there when he was alive but since he passed away there's noone that barks until I go out anymore (if I don't count my sister every once in a while).
