HOLD THE PHONE -- There's going to be "Fleetwood Mac" night on American Idol?
Granted, I haven't been watching this season because in my opinion I don't see any standouts.
But if they're going to be singing FM one week then that will be the week I tune in!!

They lip-synch every group number.
Good-bye: Caw Caw.
I can't believe Alison was in the bottom 3.

What is that caw caw business anyway- I think I missed the inside joke on that one. I'm actually glad to see her gone- her attitude sucks. I'll bet she was regretting her words when Simon told her if she didn't care, they didn't either.
I was surprised about Alison, too.
I wonder why I've never noticed the lip synch thing before.

I'm glad she said that to Simon. He's a pig.
As for her "caw caw," that was her bird call (complete with flapping arms) she made at the end of her rendition of "Rockin' Robin" during Michael Jackson week.
That's what got her the Vote for the Worst endorsement, so every week she wore a bird on her outfit or hair as a shout out to Vote For The Worst. (Every week except for the week she went home -- she probably got yelled at by the producers just like Sligh did when he said, "Hi, Dave!" on the show). So on her last night, she flaunted it. Good 4 her.

I think Megan went out in a blaze of glory. Good for her! She not only showed that she was in on the joke, but she also showed that she realizes that the whole competition was a bit vapid compared to the quality time she could have been spending with her kid. So she got her 15 minutes of fame, she's going to make boatloads of cash this summer on the AI tour, and now she can go back home where she belongs. Life is good for Megan.

I was wondering whether I was hallucinating out of the corner of my eye (since AI doesn't command my undivided attention), but didn't Matt completely forget to lip sync one of his lines in the song? For a few seconds there, you could hear a guy's vocal, but there was nobody actually "singing."

I'll miss Megan, since I am a Worster.
I'm still not feeling this year. Adam is good, but it's getting tired. I'm sure he could hit the high noted, without adding his screech to it. And Danny? If he shouts a song one more time, while the judges ooze for him, I might puke.

I get this, but I also think that she was a teensy bit arrogant when referring to her "fans". Also, she is the one who chose to be on this show and I think her tune would change drastically had she won. I think the show itself it bullsh*t but I do think that it is a vehicle to help talented kids get really really famous. Megan has a cool voice and she certainly is beautiful, but her song choices did nothing to show off her talent. And while Simon definitely can be an ass, Megan didn't seem capable of accepting criticism from any of the judges.

Same here- I watch while doing other things. I missed Matt's (and actually had to google him because I couldn't figure out which one he was) lip synch faux pas- but I definitely caught Scott's-lol. I just find it interesting that I'm noticing the lip synch business now, after watching this show for so long.

I think they just started lip synching the group numbers this season, but I could be wrong. Thought I read that somewhere. If not, then these contestants are just particularly bad at it so it's the first time I noticed.

Yeah, she's a hippie chick, she doesn't fit the mold of "pop star" and she knows it. She's weird & cool & awkward & original, and trying to do an act isn't going to work for her. I definitely got the feeling that at this point she just wanted to go home to her kid.

I think Lil is overrated. I don't think she's that good. She's bland and choses the worst songs. No one could ever compare to Kelly's version of "I Surrender" in Season One...and Kelly was hoarse! Lil should be in the bottom three, not Allison.

It's still funny to watch Anoop try to be sexy and I'm counting on Scott to forget - again - to lipsynch his part of the group song. Alison and Adam are my favorites.

They start back next Wednesday. Unless they tape a mentoring session this weekend, I highly doubt there will be a 'Mac Week. Seeing Adam sing 'Rhiannon' would be priceless, though.

He would totally rip into the "Rhiannon, won't you take me to the ska-high... dream on... try hard... you can't leave her" part!
I always thought FM week was implausible, especially since la Nicks owns her publishing completely and is not one to liberally whore out her songs to just anyone. Lindsey either. Plus it would be hypocritical for Mama to participate in something like this when she has been so critical of these manufactured pop tarts in the press. That leaves only Christine's songs, but I don't think they could do an entire show with just her songs.

^Well, Edge of Seventeen was sung on the first season and Rhiannon has been included on the Idols Tour. Go Your Own Way has also been performed, as has Holiday Road during one of those FORD Commericals. They must have released the rights for those songs to be played on television.

...another missed opportunity for the band to possibly gain more ticket sales.
I don't think Fleetwood Mac has ever crossed the minds of the producers. The want to boost viewers with big name stars of the moment. Sorry, but the name Lindsey Buckingham isn't as big as Miley Cyrus.

^ That's how I felt, but it was pointed out to me that there were several Mac references at the start of this season & that seemed oddly coincidental to me. Playing "ROF" after that Stevie chick's audition, Cook & Underwood singing GYOW, more that I can't recall right now.

Indeed, Stevie could have done her own Idol as a solo artist- and she certainly could have squeezed it into her promotional blitz for SS. And if anything, I think she would be one of the more relevant mentors they've had on. I mean... Randy Travis? Neil Diamond? Dolly Parton? Smokey Robinson? Certainly they've earned their places in music history, but they can hardly be considered "big name stars of the moment."

Adam Lambert essentially swiped Gary Jules cover "Mad World," which was a huge overseas hit for Jules. I don't know why he irritates me so much, but I'm Team Lambert if it's between him Danny The Golem.

As soon as she started imitating the Tina strut, I knew it was all over. Karaoke/impersonation at this stage? No thanks.
Scott was awful. His high notes were literally painfil.

Alison & Matt were my faves last night.
Kris was OK, but really? "All She Wants to do is Dance?" Really? Not Boys of Summer or even Dirty Laundry? Um, ok.

American Idol - Season 8
Top 8 (Songs from Birth Year)
by John Demetry
Last night proved that either Idol's catalogue of available songs is either dangerously limited or that the contestants know nothing about music history. Most likely, it evidenced that both are true. Adam Lambert rejected the treasures found in 1982 -- off the top of my head: Elvis Costello, X, Kate Bush, Roxy Music, Scritti Politti, Associates, Bruce Springsteen, English Beat, Prince, Michael Jackson, Fleetwood Mac, Stevie Nicks, Simple Minds, Chic, The Au Pairs, Madness, Dexys Midnight Runners, and on and on. Instead, Adam chose to do a Tears for Fears song ("Mad World") because there's a handy "contemporary" arrangement from the movie Donnie Darko -- a movie that nearly equals Idol's damage to our pop heritage.
If Adam Lambert had done Gang of Four's "I Love A Man In Uniform," he would have revolutionized Idol. Instead. . .
The Good
Adam Lambert -- "Mad World" -- . . .he merely stood out from the pack through superior vocal range and control, along with a flair for the dramatic (seemingly emitting a blinding blue aura). Really, for me, the competition is over. Adam is the Idol. And he deserves it. But will he win?
The Bad
Scott MacIntyre -- "The Search Is Over" -- Finally, Scott goes electric and brings out his "punk side." For the first time, I enjoyed his rousing performance as much as his post-performance banter. He's the wittiest contestant of the season. Bravo!
Kris Allen -- "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" -- Underrated: I liked the horns and the vocal.
Allison Irehata -- "I Can't Make You Love Me" -- Allison is going down in a blaze of boring.
The U-G-L-Y (You Ain't Got No Alibi)
Anoop Desai -- "True Colors" -- Brilliant song choice, mediocre vocal, bad r&b arrangement, sleep-inducing performance.
Matt Giraud -- "Part Time Lover" -- Wretched over-performance, bad dancing.
Lil Rounds -- "What's Love Got To Do With It" -- Why is she hobbling around like a victim of domestic abuse? She can't sing. And I hate this song.
What's Grosser Than Gross?
Danny Gokey -- "Stand By Me" -- It goes through three levels of awful -- each one more repulsive than the previous. He is the worst contestant in the history of the show. I think he'll beat Adam.

adam didn't do bad, but honestly i don't see the hype about him. :/
danny is blech. please send him home next, please?
allison was ok.

however his part time lover rendition was good.
scott didn't do bad, but of the contestants left, and we all know its rigged for danny to win, id rather him go over anoop and kris [my two faves this season]. and allison has more talent, hence why she hasn't gone home yet.

Ricky Braddy was from this season. He was in the Top 36.
Unlike Curtis (Still love ya though. ;) ), my fave is Anoop. I love his warm voice. It's soothing and comforting, even very sexy at times. Yes, I realize he will not win and I realize his stage presence lacks greatly, but that can come from experience. If you listen to his a capella group from UNC (Clefhangers), he's VERY good. He's used to having the guys singing with him, so him up there alone, I feel like he's lost.
I like Adam, when he's not screechy. My second fave studio song this year is his Ring of Fire (Ooh Baby Baby by Anoop is my fave).
Don't care about anyone else really, although Kris is okay. Gokey needs to quit yelling and acting like he can't breathe (a la Archuleta). Lil...SUCKS. Matt is okay, but he's too much like Timberlake to me. Alison is good too, but man does she look like Kelly Clarkson.

American Idol - Season 8
Top 7 (Songs from Movies)
The Idols not only don't know music, they also don't know movies. How appropriate that the man who ruined movies for a generation -- Quentin Tarantino -- mentors on the show that ruined pop music.
The Good
Adam Lambert - "Born to Be Wild" - More on Adam when I have more time (particularly in response to that recent New York Times piece on him). I rocked out to Adam's theatrical performance. He's perfected excitation, but I'm not convinced he's an expressive artist. Last night was junk food. He's like Quentin Tarantino: better than his lessers. But he's no Sanjaya or David Archuleta. Yet.
The Bad
Kris Allen - "Falling Slowly" - In a way, I'm glad Kris picked this song. Within the context of a contest, it shows how such indie drivel as the Once soundtrack fails to delight or to move. It's sentimental because it sells silly notions of romance with silly notions of art -- no beauty, no intensity. This is Kris without Dylan.
Anoop Desai - "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)" - Anoop's best-ever performance. And it was totally dull.
The U-G-L-Y (You Ain't Got No Alibi)
Allison Irehata - "Don't Want to Miss a Thing" - You know you're in trouble when the only good parts of the song are the screeching runs on the power notes. Of course, Simon loves it. Allison is really falling apart.
Lil Rounds - "The Rose" - I voted for Lil last night because I appreciate any contestant who calls the judges out on their lame, "broken record" advice. Her total lack of talent (she's NEVER sung a song on pitch on the show -- including her auditions!) exposes the show's stereotyping casting process. Good on her for fighting back against attempts to pigeonhole her. After all, the judges are the ones who put her no-talent behind on the show -- why act surprised now?
Matt Giraud - "Have You Really Loved a Woman?" - What a pretentious mess. It was like a satire of a lounge or bar performer.
What's Grosser Than Gross?
Danny Gokey - "Endless Love" - Danny whipped out the dead-wife card last night to solidify his frontrunner position. He keeps getting worse and worse as a singer, but that doesn't matter. Paula noted his manipulative song structure (at the end, he "slays" us) that has been the key to his success. Piggy-backing on the motif, Simon applauds Danny for sticking to the script and showing us more of his grief. In the savviest move of the night, Danny performed sans glasses (apparently he has some 18 frames that he alternates each week). So while Simon criticized Danny for his boring rendition of the song (complete with harp), Danny's beady eyes glistened, moist with crocodile tears. Stay Tuned: The frames will be back next week.

Allison did great, although I do worry that she may not have impressed the audience enough to get them to vote. Kris was a nice surprise. I must say I was not thrilled with Adam this week, but I think we all know he's safe.

I didn't like Kris at first, but he impresses more and more each week - I can't wait to see what he does next - same with Adam.
I love how they got rid of Lil swiftly - no Ryan "after the break" crap with her being cut.
I'm worried about Allison too, but doubt they'll have an all-male top 4. She's a way better singer than Matt or Danny.

Same, she's my favourite. I don't get why she's being a bit overlooked this year, well I guess everyone is a bit in Adam's shadow. Allison is a kick-ass performer with a great voice, she rocked Alone, not an easy song to pull off!

The rocker chicks never, ever seem to do that well on Idol. Carly Smithson from last season, that Nadia chick with the afro from a few seasons back (I LOVED her! I still remember her doing Dusty's "You Don't Hvae To Say You Love Me") Kim Caldwell. I don't get it.
I was thinking they wouldn't want an all-male top 4 or 5, but who knows. If American really votes (and the votes are fair & counted) then it's possible. If the producers rig it, I'm sure she'll be top 3.
I predict an Adam (eh), Danny (barf) & Allison (yay) Top 3. Adam has it in the bag, IMO.

You're right and it is strange as pop/rock seems to be what sells well for female artists at the moment. To be honest I find the guys in this contest pretty bland, with the exception of Adam who just doesn't do it for me.
I agree about Adam having it sewn up already -I know a lot of people who love him but I, personally wouldn't buy his CD. It might actually be better for Allison not to win and get a deal with another record label who'd offer her the chance to have more of a say in the music she's making, she seems like much too strong an individual to be mouled, it'd be sad for her to lose that.

American Idol - Season 8
Top 5 (Rat Pack)
by John Demetry
They couldn't get Morrissey, so I guess they settled for Jamie Foxx to mentor on Rat Pack night. I wasn't sure why until Foxx brought out the flirt when mentoring Kris Allen. His best bit of advice was reminding the cast that the Rat Pack sang "a lifestyle." I don't think ANY of the Idols lived up to that challenge. They don't sing a sensibility, they sing marketability.
The Good
Kris Allen -- "The Way You Look Tonight" -- Last night, I decided I want Kris to win. He's represents the kind of moderately talented white-bread cuteness that should win a voter-based Idol prize. He was so well-lit and confident last night that I felt like he has come into his own as a performer over the course of the competition. Earlier this season, I erroneously attributed Bryan Ferry's version of Bob Dylan's "To Make You Feel My Love" as being from his standards album As Time Goes By. It was not. It was on his album of Dylan covers Dylanesque (the most beautifully produced album of all time). Ferry DID cover "The Way You Look Tonight" on As Time Goes By. Kris' version did NOT remind me of Ferry's this time. To understand what Jamie Foxx means by singing a lifestyle, one should study (and thrill to) Bryan Ferry.
Allison Irehata -- "Someone To Watch Over Me" -- I think this was her best performance. Her raspy melisma touched me. And, for the first time since the Top 13 began, she didn't bore me.
The Bad
Adam Lambert - "A New Dawn" -- For the first time, I would call Adam's performance screechy and pitchy. It's also a shame he didn't really tackle the song's jazz challenge -- instead going a more theatrical route. His performance of "Black & White" proves he has the capability to creatively interpret -- punch and kick -- a song in his vocal phrasing. I would have liked to see that applied to this jazz standard. He should have asked: WWFD?
The U-G-L-Y - You Ain't Got No Alibi
Danny Gokey -- What did he sing? -- I left the room and when I came back, Danny was yelling at me again through his TV set. Why is he always yelling? He must be in the "anger" stage of grieving, as he reminds us with his "Sophia's Heart" plug at the end of his song.
Matt Giraud -- "My Funny Valentine" -- A horrendous mess (with a couple of ok parts): jazz done by a fool. Simon called it "brilliant."

American Idol - Season 8
Top 4 (Rock)
During Friday night's annual Night of 1000 Stevies concert, the thought hit me: NO episode/season of American Idol has ever matched this talent. Night of 1000 Stevies features performers of all ilks -- singers, musicians, bands, aerialists, dancers, magicians, female impersonators, tribute acts, talented fans, harpists -- interpreting Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac classics. Debbie Harry (of Blondie) even joined The Goon Squad for a tight rendition of Fleetwood Mac's anthemic "The Chain." Without any of Idol's competitive emphasis, Love unified the evening -- culminating in the "Battle of 1000 Stevies" set to the cathartic "Edge of Seventeen."
My dream of a Fleetwood Mac theme night for Idol seems doomed, but that's probably a good thing. As "Rock" night proved, none of the Idols got IT.
In the spirit of Night of 1000 Stevies, I won't rank the contestants this week.
Adam Lambert's last two weeks failed to impress me. For me, he's never surpassed his "Black or White," "Ring of Fire," and "Tracks of My Tears" performances. His rock performance struck me as indulgent, lacking the heart that Kris Allen felt necessary to bring to the evening.
Allison Iraheta got lucky being teamed with Adam for the duet.
Kris Allen proved himself to be the most accessible and engaging of the Idol contestants. His take on "Come Together" stood on his sense of conviction (earlier undercut by Danny Gokey's sabotage on the duet). I want him to win. Therefore, he is doomed.
Danny Gokey earned the votes of Vote For The Worst last night. First, he crippled Kris Allen with a duet song choice and then tried to ousting him while basically pretending he was the only person on stage. Then, in his solo song, Danny finally made obvious what was always true: he's a terrible singer. FINALLY, he claimed after hitting the ugliest note -- the sound of someone being murdered -- in Idol competition history, that he thought he sounded good!
At the beginning of this season, I made a promise that if Danny Gokey wins Idol, I will never watch the show again (unless there's a Fleetwood Mac night, of course). Let's make it happen! I'd rather have one Night of 1000 Stevies, than another Season of 0 Stevies.

No point in watching now that Allison's gone, IMO. Both Danny & Kris sucked this week & I thought Kris would go for sure. I thought Allison was quite good Tues, but even better Wed. night. Her duet w/Adam was fantastic, miles better than the other 2 twats.
Whatever. As usual, the rock chick doesn't get into the finals. I'm sure the judges would have picked a Stevie or a Heart or an Airplane tune for her to do next week too. :( That would have been cool. Well, maybe she'll get a good solo deal & be better off, ala' Daughtry. I will now be rooting for no one.
BTW - Paula's "performance?" Are they kidding? Great, she can still dance - good for her. Thanks for sharing. Wasn't thrilled w/ No Doubt, but at least Gwen actually sings. American Idol - Season 8
Top 3 (Judge's Pick/Contestant's Choice)
Last night revealed that the Emperor has no clothes. But in our culture, who will call him out?
The Good
Kris Allen -- "Heartless" -- Owing a debt to Mia Carruthers' Taking The Stage acoustic stairwell version of the Kanye hit, Kris Allen towered above the competition and solidified his placing as the Top 13's single best competitor -- against all odds.
Kris Allen -- "Apologize" -- Criticized for not changing the arrangement, his faithfulness to the One Republic album version instead highlighted the power of his PHRASING (while showing off some piano skills for variety's sake next to his acoustic guitar reimagining on "Heartless").
The Bad
Adam Lambert -- "One" -- Adam's gay experience -- highlighted by his father's knowing/loving joke about the lack of appeal sports had for a young Adam -- just doesn't relate to U2's overbaked story of a gay son rejected by his father. Consequently, he highlights the song's protest by transforming it into a cabaret/broadway tune. That's right, when Randy chastized Adam for dropping the song's melody, he really meant he was disappointed by his "theatrical" rendition. Rumour has it that Simon's alternative pick for Adam would have been Chris Isaak's glorious "Wicked Game."
Adam Lambert -- "Crying" -- It would be funny if Adam chose this Aerosmith song to show up Danny's attempt last week at a Steven Tyler scream. Too bad: Adam was nearly as unlistenable -- but not nearly as fun. So everyone bows. But: Unlike Gokey's "Scream On," this won't go viral.
The Gokey
Danny Gokey -- "You Are So Beautiful" -- Surprisingly, this stands as Gokey's best performance. It resides in his range, it was not flat, it showed off some overdone delicacy (heightened by his "church" rendition of the song).
Danny Gokey -- "Dance Little Sister" -- Paula knows Gokey's growl could fit into Terence Trent D'Arby. Why not "Wishing Well"? I suspect that the chosen song's theme of dealing with grief through the experience of common catharsis appealed to Paula's idea of Gokey as the Grieving Widower. Too bad Danny didn't interpret the song in that way. Still, props to him. I thought it was his second best performance of the season. . . up against Adam's worst.

Gokey was awful. Nothing else to say.
I HATED Adam's version of "One." HATED. One of the greatest songs ever, IMO. Butchered. And "Cryin?" Really? How about a classic, like "Dream On" or something? I thought it was 1992 for a minute there. *shudder*
Kris did well on "Apologize." They would have torn him a new one if he didn't do the falsetto part, since that's the song's main hook. So it's BS that they bitched about how he didn't "make it his own." It wasn't a carbon copy, it wasn't a karoke imitation, so I thought it was good. I loved his version of Heartless. Really, really great.
I stil don't give a **** who wins this season, but I supoose I'm rooting for Kris now even though he's kind of boring. I can't always tolerate Adam's screeching - sometimes it works, sometimes it grates on the nerves. And Danny's just gross.

Both of them have achieved "artistry" as Kara Dioguardi means it -- they fit a market niche -- but will either of them rise to the bar of real aristry set by David Archuleta last year, in which he summed up his entire life and personality in three songs?

Totally hoping for Adam to win, he's clearly better suited to a rock style gendre and could well do with being a band frontman! Singley, his screaming would probably get to me after a while!!
Also thought Katy Perry is so quirky she's brilliant :blob1: No guessing her favourite hey.Whats more she sang LIVE and was far more entertaining than No Doubt, the week before (who were just plain weird).Oooh, a Katy and Adam sing song would be .........

I'm with you on the idea of Adam fronting a band, that would work well. It might actually be better for him to come second so he has more options.
Katy Perry is pretty cool, I thought she was better than No Doubt too (Gwen's voice is biziarre live). I love Katy's quirky dress sense too.

The Not-So-Friendly Skies
The journey to the AI8 Promised Land has been one to forget. Except we won't allow it.
17 May 2009
If American Idol were an airline company, then this weekend you'd be landing on a sunny Caribbean island surrounded by crystal blue water, perfectly manicured beaches, and a staff of locals standing by to cater to your every whim. Ah, paradise! Mind you, along the way your plane would've been delayed on the jetway at takeoff for five hours...you'd have made two unscheduled stops for repairs...the airline would've lost your reservation, your luggage, and your spouse...all of the in-flight magazines, not to mention every square inch of the cabin, would've been filled with nothing but ads...you'd have ordered chicken and rice for dinner but the flight attendant would've served you liver and turnips and insisted it was what you really wanted...the cockpit crew would have come on the loudspeaker every five minutes arguing furiously with one another about which one best knew how to fly the plane...and, after a harrowing landing that could not, strictly speaking, be termed a crash because the plane finished right-side up, the airline's CEO would've greeted you at the gate to remind you how enjoyable the entire experience had been, and that you could purchase MP3s of your fellow passengers' terrified screams on iTunes the next day. Not to mention that your intended destination would've been Chicago all along.
Such is the feeling today across Idol Nation. On the one hand, the series has never produced a final matchup as compelling as Adam Lambert vs. Kris Allen two men who could not be more different in style or personality, but two who could not be more alike in understanding what it takes to succeed here in the Second Idol Epoch. On the other hand, thanks to the producers' scheming antics right from the get-go (and continuing even as we speak), the itinerary felt like something between a triathon and a death march. Season Eight, the highest-rated one in our database, was also, at least in our eyes, the least enjoyable. Yes, that includes Season Six. No, we never dreamed we'd ever write those words.
So shall we focus this weekend on the journey or the destination? Let's do a little of both. To fully understand how we arrived at this point, and why the popular and όber-talented Lambert is in serious jeopardy of losing on Tuesday night, we need to rewind the calendar to January and take this long trip over again. Don't worry, you're flying WNTS Airways now. We're a turnip-free airline.
Cleared For Takeoff On Runway Eight
In hindsight, it's all Sara Bareilles's fault. Coldplay's, too. See, until Jasmine Murray and Matt Giraud coughed up back-to-back hairballs to kick off the Group Two Semifinal episode, everything had been proceeding smoothly according to the producers' master plan....
Everyone noticed that AI8 started off strangely. Many of we viewers wondered why the audition shows seemed so unusually focused on a handful of contestants. Why the four Hollywood episodes featured so much irrelevant backstage footage and so little onstage singing. Why the producers had mysteriously upped the number of semifinalists from 24 to 36. Why they brought back the unlamented groups-and-wildcard format that nobody, save for Leah LaBelle and her immediate family, ever thought was a good idea.
All of those changes were puzzling to be sure, and we suppose they should have aroused more suspicion than they did. True, the ever-entertaining folks at TelevisionWithoutPity.com's legendary Grassy Knoll had an inkling that something was up, but no one there could quite put their finger on it, and besides, the Knollers always think that something is up. Here at WhatNotToSing, like almost everywhere else around the Idolsphere, we mostly wrote it off to 19E acting like drama-worshiping doofuses again.
This time, however, the conspiracy theorists were on the right track. In past seasons, the producers would choose a handful of contestants who'd test-marketed very well and give them ample screen time before the semifinals began. That allowed their favorites to build a fanbase that would help propel them deep into the competition; we fairness-minded fans pretended not to notice. Still, there were always accidents along the way. Oftentimes, those accidents would leave Idol with a field that was, from 19E's standpoint, too unpredictable, too demographically unbalanced, too fragile for the grueling long haul, or filled with too many contestants whose on-screen popularity was unlikely to translate into post-competition record sales.
For 2009, the producers apparently decided that accidents were no longer acceptable. At the least, if mistakes were going to be made, then they'd be their own and not America's. Essentially, they pre-selected all of the finalists for Season Eight, not just the usual handful. It appears that 15 contestants made their initial cut, though two of those, Tatiana Del Toro and Nick Mitchell, may have been included solely for comic relief. All received extensive "pimp piece" promotional segments in January, and most (but not all) were given airtime in Hollywood as well. The expanded field and one-and-done Semifinals format ensured that no contestant except their chosen ones could build a big enough fanbase to advance out of a Group round. Finally, the Wild Card Show, the first vote-free competition episode since Season One, was there to clean up any loose ends and fine-tune the field before the Finals got underway. Foolproof!
Group One played out exactly as scripted. Five of its twelve singers had received the full spa treatment of pimpage. Of those, three Danny Gokey, Alexis Grace, and Michael Sarver advanced safely to the Finals, and the other two posted above-average web approval ratings, making their Wild Card callbacks seem perfectly normal. (And as a bonus to the producers, they'd get to torture America with Del Toro one more time.) All of the remaining contestants came in under 50, save for a dorky-eared nobody from North Carolina named Ricky Braddy who cracked 70 but was easily forgotten. So far, so good, and no one was any the wiser.
But one week later, 19E's carefully-constructed house of cards began to come tumbling down. The adorable but musically immature Murray couldn't come close to handling the difficult phrasing required on Love Song (25). Moments later, Giraud, an accomplished piano-bar singer, overreached badly with Viva La Vida and paid the price (21). Had both promoted contestants performed to expecations, it's almost certain that the fifth and sixth singers of the group, a scarlet-haired rocker girl from L.A. and a cute but pint-sized Arkansas newlywed, would have been sent back to obscurity the next night along with the rest of the cannon fodder. As it was, Allison Iraheta and Kris Allen joined show-closing Adam Lambert in the Finals. That most definitely wasn't in the script, and neither was the fact that a pair of expendables, Mishavonna Henson and Jesse Langseth, had also outsung most of the producers' chosen ones.
And now for a brief interlude. The next weekend, two seemingly innocuous stories appeared on the Idolsphere. First, several sources (we think MJ's Big Blog was among them) reported that an Idol fan had waited on Giraud while he was out shopping for clothes in Los Angeles. He told her shh-h-h! that he was going to be singing Motown on the upcoming Wild Card Show and that he needed a hat for the performance. "But how could he possibly know that he'd...??" Well hang on, there's more. Here at WNTS, we'd recently launched a new Idolmetrics study on the effects of pre-semifinals exposure, and our reader-researchers had started to submit their data. Hey, we announced cheerfully, whaddya know: those control-freak producers are finally starting to spread the spotlight a bit. There were 15 pimp piece recipients this year, by far the most of any season. Their names were still listed on our home page when Group Three took to the stage....
On the surface, round three also unfolded to plan. Three of its four prepackaged finalists made it through safely (Lil Rounds, Scott Macintyre, and Jorge Nunez), and the fourth, Von Smith, posted a solid 58. But a few fathoms below, more trouble was brewing. The producers, whose Achilles heel has always been clock management, had ineptly scheduled the Wild Card show to take place on Thursday, two days hence. Hold on a sec, many bloggers wrote, how in blazes can a contestant who learns he's been eliminated on Wednesday possibly prepare a new, life-or-death performance in under 24 hours? Evidently 19E had thought of that too, and as such they stocked Group Three with their least promising, most anonymous, most foddery of their cannon fodder, expecting none of them to make a splash....
...except Felicia Barton (76) did. And Ju'Not Joyner (66). And Kristen McNamara (59). Even Kendall Beard (45) comfortably reached three stars. Our friend Leo The Idol Guy immediately observed that at 51.7, the show was the highest-rated semifinal episode ever under the Group format. E-v-e-r. The show generated some cautious optimism across the Idolsphere, a sense that after two disappointing and underachieving weeks, Season Eight had finally gotten rolling. How many of those surprisingly good kids would be invited back for the Wild Card? Three? Four? Five?
One.
The 'Wild' Blue Yonder
By our estimate, Wednesday, March 3rd, 2009 was when Season Eight came off the rails. It may someday be remembered by TV historians as the date American Idol jumped that well-worn shark. The producers had to make an executive decision, pronto. Seven of their preferred finalists had tickets in hand, but Iraheta and Allen had unexpectedly crashed the party. That meant there weren't nearly enough spots in the Wild Card round to accommodate the remainder of their inner circle along with all of the unknowns who'd sung well enough to deserve a callback. Something had to get tossed into the wastepaper basket: the producers' credibility, or their script.
In the end, they kept the script. That night, after Group Three's results were announced, six of the eight Wild Card invitations went to their pre-chosen ones, including Giraud and Murray. Only Kalama and Mitchell were booted from the club, in favor of Braddy and Langseth. Group Three may have produced two-fifths of the Top 20 performances of the semifinals, but they got just one-eighth of the Wild Card slots (Smith, naturally).
Across the web, bloggers and forumists everywhere cried "Foul!" Suddenly it became easy to piece together the clues. The uncanny correlation of pimp piece recipients to Wild Card invitees was easily seen by anyone who visited our home page. The story of Giraud's shopping trip took on a new significance, particularly when the next night, there he was on America's TV screens wearing a hat and singing Who's Loving You. Obviously he'd been awarded his spot in the Wild Card round long before Group Three had even sung, making a mockery of the assertion that this was a legitimate singing competition. A horrible realization began to set in: we loyal Idol fans, all 25 million of us, had been played for bigger fools than usual.
There were few surprises on Thursday's kangaroo court show. The judges predictably sent Langseth and Braddy packing, even though the latter reached 4-stars for the second straight time. The only off-script moment came at the very end when the judges, forced to choose between Giraud and Anoop Desai for the twelfth and last slot, kept both. No doubt both had test-marketed very well. Why get rid of either when the faceless, fanbase-less Allen surely wasn't going to last terribly long in the competition? (We have to wonder: had Del Toro sung even passably that fateful night instead of doing her embarrassing reprise, would there have in fact been 14 finalists in Season Eight?)
So now that the producers had the "cast" they wanted for the Finals, save for two interlopers, would they put down the script and let the rest of the season play out organically? Fat chance. It was time to raise the curtain on Act Two.
The Final Approach
The three contestants who'd been given the pimp spot in their respective Group episodes Gokey, Lambert, and Rounds quickly became the judges' clear favorites when the Finals got underway. Go figure. Paula Abdul announced that she'd see the two men in the Finale at every convenient opportunity. While in past years most Idolsphere analysts might have written that off as Paula Being Paula, the wounds from this season's Semifinals were still raw. Signs of a major backlash were beginning to turn up across the web; the producers, as is their wont, ignored them. They probably never change the batteries in their smoke detectors, either.
Meanwhile, America was busy weeding out the weak links in the Final 13, of which there were plenty to choose from. Quite a few of the producers' November seedlings didn't perform up to snuff come spring. Murray, for example, immediately joined AI3's LaBelle in the exclusive but embarrassing category of contestants who performed three times on the show without ever being advanced by the voters. Grace was a surprising boot in the Final 11, after which the electorate really got serious. For the next six weeks, they sent home the contestant with the lowest or second-lowest approval rating in our database, each and every time.
Rounds fell out of favor with the Idol Machine along about the Final 10. The judges basically told her to sing Whitney Houston in every code known to mankind. (Randy: "Ingsay Itneywhay Oustonhay!") When she bravely but stubbornly refused evidently, Celine Dion was the wrong shade of diva for them and her performance quality began to tail off, they turned on her viciously. That settled it: the Finale would be Lambert versus Gokey. Period. End of discussion.
Lambert, for his part, held up his end of the bargain. Sometimes exhilirating, sometimes infuriating, never uninteresting, he delivered a string of excellent vocal performances coupled with the commanding stage presence of a seasoned theater veteran. His frequently way-over-the-top style, however, earned him plenty of critics. Gokey, in contrast, was consistently good but rarely great. Unique among all historical Idol front-runners, he never delivered a 5-star (80+)rated performance, missing by just one point on his Semifinals effort and slowly retreating from there. But with one notable exception (Lambert's controversial Ring Of Fire), the judges' comments to both were unswervingly, overwhelmingly, incontrovertibly enthusiastic, no matter where their approval ratings happened to fall.
While the judges were busy pimping at the top, and the voters were busy weeding at the bottom, something very strange was taking place on the midcard. Allen and Iraheta were still alive and still singing strongly, week in and week out. Neither dipped below 47 throughout the months of March and April, and both occasionally turned in a 5-star masterpiece. Although their fans constantly kvetched that the judges' critiques of the twosome were too lukewarm, we'd say they were right on target: enthusiastic without being obsequiously fawning after their great outings, critical without being unduly harsh after their so-so ones. (Neither came close to turning in a train wreck.) Most likely, the feedback seemed middling because of the over-the-top praise heaped upon the frontrunners and the savage beat-downs given to the stragglers. When exaggeration becomes the norm, true normalcy is easily mistaken for indifference.
Giraud, who'd acquitted himself quite well indeed after being granted his questionable Wild Card reprieve, wound up finishing seventh. And later, fifth. He was the puzzling beneficiary of the Judges' Save, another new twist introduced by the producers to keep an iron grip on the script. As Idol innovations go, this one turned out better than most: it took eight full days before it became a nationwide butt of jokes when the judges' declined to use it on Grace's behalf. (Honestly, that's pretty good for them, so stop snickering.) When it became clear that the Save was a gimmick exclusively for Lambert's and Gokey's benefit, and that neither would need the insurance policy before it expired after the Final Six, the producers evidently feared they'd look like complete fools if they didn't use it. Such is what we AI loyalists were forced to endure this season.
The Final Four comprised Lambert and Gokey, whom everyone expected to be there, and Iraheta and Allen, whom nobody in his right mind did. (Well, Ryan Seacrest predicted that exact Final Four in an interview around the time of the Final 10, but that sort of proves our point.) From where we sit, that seemed to be the most deserving quartet under the circumstances, though we'd strongly qualify that statement by reminding you of the many semifinalists who were denied a fair opportunity of making it this far. Nonetheless, an anti-Gokey backlash was in full throttle across the Idolsphere. Many of his detractors felt he'd received overly lenient, kid-glove treatment from the producers and judges, and they were ear-splittingly screaming mad about it. That night, Gokey returned the favor. It took a week before the consequences of Dream On caught up with him (that's about normal for a strong and popular contestant), and America passed the time by reluctantly making their decision between the two Accidental Finalists. They chose Allen.
Gokey went home in the Final Three week, having been upstaged by Allen on Heartless and pwned by Lambert on Aerosmith. And with that, we've landed at the Finale and are taxiing to the gate. You can turn on your cell phones and pagers now.
Baggage Claim
The purpose of retracing our steps this weekend isn't to express further outrage about how the season went down, nor to throw cold water on the Tuesday's Finale. It's simply to remind Idol fans that sometimes all that ends well is not well. This is one of those times.
Recall that Season Seven suffered from many of the same over-domineering ills as Season Eight. Not only was there a script, but Paula was caught red-handed reading from it at one point. But in the end, David Cook and David Archuleta put on a terrific Finale, everyone left the theater smiling, both singers went on to enjoy commercial success, and the producers mopped their brows and said, "Whew, did we ever just dodge a bullet. Let's never put our thumbs on the scale like that again." Er, well, three out of four isn't bad.
Sadly, Idol's masters seem to have gone in the opposite direction this year. Instead of promoting the story, the producers have foolishly made themselves part of the story. Along the way, the judges somehow came to the truly sorry belief that America tunes in to watch them, not the contestants. Season Eight is like a recombinative virus: the DNA of the singers has been corrupted with that of the production staff, producing a new and wholly undesirable organism. Just want America needed: a remake of The Fly, starring Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul. Be afraid, be very afraid.
The Idol Guy sums this up brilliantly in one word: hubris. 19E has forgotten what made American Idol such a smashing success in the first place unknown but personable singers competing head-to-head in a nationwide sing-off, with America (and not them) making the final call.
Most of the baggage from the producers' missteps appears to be piling up on Lambert's shoulders. There's no question that 19E dearly wants him to win because they believe he'll bring in the most revenue, particularly overseas. We'll defer to them on that, because they know the music business far better than we do, and also because we think they're correct. Still, we concur with the perception that Lambert has received noticeably favorable treatment this year, and that at times it's been very off-putting. (Case in point: if there's no rule that a contestant can't appear on the cover of a major entertainment magazine while the competition is going on, there really ought to be. Three months ago, Ricky Braddy's parents were forced by 19E's lawyers to take down a website they'd started to promote his candidacy, on the grounds of unfairness. Uh-h-h...)
Regrettably, the backlash might cost Lambert just enough votes to lose what looks to be a very close Finale. How ironic is it that one of the most rebellious, fiercely independent artists in the show's history is being portrayed in some quarters as a company lackey? And, the contestant whose backstory was granted less exposure than any American Idol finalist in memory has made his enforced anonymity into a compelling story? Say it with us: That can't have been part of the script.
* * *
So who will win on Tuesday? We're not entirely sure. Lambert has the showmanship, the vocal chops, the media buzz, the far more passionate fanbase...and, not incidentally, the higher average approval rating on the season (72.2 to 62.5.) Allen's fanbase isn't nearly as deep but our database says that it's wider (if there were a one-vote-per-person limit this week, he'd win), and he has the underdog story and the momentum on his side. Both men have produced plenty of memorable performances, and both are clever and imaginative, though that hardly helps when reprises and Original Winner's Songs make up two-thirds of the program.
Our guess is that the outcome is mostly in Allen's hands. Owing to the judging quirk on Movie Night, he has a golden opportunity to produce the first reprise performance in WNTS history that rates higher (maybe substantially higher) than the original. If he chooses wisely, and if he turns his third song into anything resembling another "Heartless", he'll win. Lambert's best chance is to stay restrained on his new song (there are no new voters to be won at this late stage by wailing), bring the competition down to the show-closing OWS, and then outsing Allen head-to-head by such an undeniable margin that even his critics will concede he's a deserving winner. It worked for Jordin Sparks. Lambert also has to hope fervently that the judges do him no more "favors" in the overpraise department, since that might motivate enough fed-up viewers to call in for Allen and swing the result.
Regardless of how it ends, the show needs a massive shake-up for 2010. We for one have no intention of following Season Nine if it's anything at all like Season Eight (and if we're thinking of bailing on the show, considering all the unpaid hours we've spent over the years cataloging it, can the casual viewer be far behind?) "Is American Idol Fixed?", screamed the web headlines this week. Well, it may or may not be fixed, but it's sure as hell broken. Over the next few weeks, we'll look at ways that AI might start digging out of the hole it's dug for itself, one shovelful at a time. (And, we'll be fair and turn our crosshairs on ourselves, too; there are quite a few things we need to do better at WNTS to serve the Idolsphere, which we'll cover as well.) Pre-boarding begins in seven days. Get here early if you want an aisle seat.

FYI:
2008 American Idol finalist Carly Smithson recorded a Sandy Stewart song for her 2001 major label debut, "Ultimate High" (2001). She recorded it under her maiden name of Carly Hennessey.
Sandy Stewart co-wrote "Young Love" with Dave Munday & Gregg Alexander. Stewart appeared on both of Alexander's solo albums.

American Idol - Season 8
Top 2 (3 Rounds)
Simon's "big ding dong" got deflated by judge Kara Diogaurdi's song, "No Boundaries," an amelodic train wreck (sorry, Randy) of a victory song. Only Kris Allen saved the night when he explained that for Adam and him, this isn't a competition, they just wanted to put on "a good show." That spirit -- that unity -- through their differing, yet complimentary, styles of masculinity. That sense of brotherhood made Round 1 sizzle, Round 2 inspire, and Round 3 bearable.
Round 1 (Repeat)
Adam Lambert -- "Mad World" -- Adam opened the show with Broadway aplomb but Randy -- shockers! -- got it right when he shot down Simon's diss -- "Phantom of the Opera" -- by exclaiming: "Twilight." That book/movie's mystical, celestial expression of longing and loneliness fit the song's slo-mo tone. . . setting the stage for:
Kris Allen -- "Ain't No Sunshine" -- Kris raised the sensuality quotient (where Adam fears to tread), synching with Adam's male delicacy but more directly touching the audience. Arguably his best ever performance.
The Winner: Kris Allen
Round 2 (Producers' Pick)
Adam Lambert -- "A Change Is Gonna Come" -- The Producer decided to jump on the Obama bandwagon and instructed the contestants to sing socially conscious r&b songs from the 1960s and 1970s (neither of which represent the best of the respective artist's catalogue). Adam Lambert traded in Sam Cooke's vocal sumblimity for campy vocalizing. Because it's him, it works. Kinda. I suppose it becomes a Prop 8 update of the song. But that's another issue entirely . . .
Kris Allen -- "What's Going On?" -- Kris finds the folk essence -- for better or worse -- of Marvin Gaye's critically-beloved protest song. I think he sings it very fine. Again, he gains for following Adam, as their opposing styles and sense of commaraderie give concrete form to the songs' (in this Idol context) banality -- which Randy, back to being pointless, stresses relates to our current situation. . .
The Winner: Adam Lambert (barely)
Round 3 (The Worst Song Ever Written)
Adam Lambert -- "No Boundaries" -- Adam is so "pitchy, dawg" that I found this totally unpleasant. The back up singers were terrible. The arrangement inane. Kara Diogaurdi ruins everything.
Kris Allen -- "No Boundaries" -- I actually liked Kris' off-key attempt to carry over the song more than Adam's attempt to blast through its banalities (mountains, hurricanes).
The Winner: Kris Allen
OVER-ALL WINNER: KRIS ALLEN (2-1)
When Kris and Adam put their arms around each other and pointed to the other as the rightful Idol, it expressed "No Boundaries" more than Kara's atonal egotism and the producers' pompousity -- and structuring of the show to ensure their desired outcome. Adam will win the title, but Brotherhood was best in show.

Boring finale. Glad I DVR'd & fast-forwarded through most of the crap.
Adam's first song was excellent, as it was before. Fuller's choice was OK, but I thought sure that Simon would say he oversang/shouted it. The Kara song was painful when he sang it - literally hurt my ears.
Kris's first was great again too. Fuller's choice was OK, but not great. Not his fault, though, it's just not an exciting tune for a finale. The kara song sucked, but slightly less than when Adam did it.
I called every number last night @ 9:20pm to see what was up. The only number I didn't get through on right away was Kris's #2 line. Don't know if that means anything. Doubt it.

I totally coincidentally read online today that Paul Rodgers and Queen split up. I seriously doubt that Brian May and Roger Taylor were there by accident tonight!

I was shocked that Adam didn't win,
but I do think Kris deserved it more.
Comparing Kris to Cook though, Kris wins. I think he has the potential to be much more sucessful than Cook if the label doesn't mess around with him, and they just let him do what he wants.
My mom predicts Adam will go on to 'bigger and better' things. She loved him. It was a house divided tonight.

KRIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't believe my favorite of the Top 13 actually won!
to Kris & all the Idols. I figured that he would win. I mean, he's multi-talented. Not only does he sing, but he can play the guitar & piano. And the type of music that he'll probably sing is what is going to sell the best. Maybe Adam can get a gig with Queen. And not that he can't go off on his own. But it would suit him or even doing plays.
On another note two thumbs up to Kara :thumbsup:. She really did show up Bikini Girl. Why does she just write songs? She doesn't really sing half bad.
And I would love to see Stevie on a finale show or any other Idol show for that matter or even Lindsey.

The best thing for Adam to do is to join Queen. No one could take Freddie's place, but he sure could rock out those hits.
The look on Brian May's face said it all. The kid was robbed, IMO.

Yes, I'm a day late and no, I didn't look here, to see the results first (the show was on tv last night).....WHAT ON EARTH??????!!!!!! How could Mr bland and boring, beat Mr fun and entertaining is beyond me! I'm sure Kris is a lovely person, but he has now become the equivilant of X factor winner Leon Jackson (1 album later and he's fish food) Adam, like runner up Rydian will be much more successfull....Kris did do a good job with Keith Urban (country is obviously where his voice lies) but Adam got dumped in front of TWO massively popular groups and outshone everyone (dare I even suggest, I thought he reminded me of a young Freddie Murcury:shocked:) and shoulder pads aside, he was well suited singing with Kiss....
urghhh!!! I shall be stewing over my coffee for at least the rest of the day.. and pity any poor customer who interupts my thoughts on the shop floor !

Why do people always ask me that. Of course I'm serious. I love watching Kris show his MJ love.
