Didn't know to post this in Stevie's forum or the Rumours, since my first thoughts were abut Stevie's hair (()), but the interview is interesting, speciall Stevie's and John's words..
This confirms Mick's book was not far from the truth. Fortunately S&L are friends again.

This is from a BBC series called Rock Family Trees, the episode featuring the Mac was shown in 1995 I think, so they hadn't all kissed and made up by that point and Stevie was yet to have her Dance makeover!

Everytime I watch this video I imagine the following picture: stevie and lindsey trying to choke each other in front of everybody, looking in each others eyes...electric sparks. then she running away, with her dress and scarf floating...very Catherine and Heathcliff. But he can't kill her...
Although the video is so dramatic, the fact is that some parts are hillarious. John saying: but what I ment was...why don't you just leave the room?
or Stevie: my father and my brother will kill you (sounds like a mafia thing...La famiglia Nicks).

And yet, in spite of Stevie's "out-thereness", she still manages to be the very model of sanity when compared to the guitarists in Fleetwood Mac.

All accounts say Lindsey flipped his lid at that meeting and "went for her" as if he were mad. But context is everything. Here's a guy who wrote half of the new album, produced and arranged it, fit three of Stevie's songs in at the last minute, and then is being told, by Stevie that he's welching on his commitment to the band, that he cares for no one but himself: I can see why he might have snapped.
Under much less intense circumstances, Bob Welch left the band feeling similarly drained and frustrated, as if his commitment to FM was keeping him from creating the music he really wanted to make. Peter Green left too, because he was beginning to feel trapped (the drugs couldn't have helped)...
Lindsey' meltdown at Christine's house has to be understood in this context. I'm sure he's no picnic to work with, but he also gave A LOT to a band of people who, to him, must have seemed, at the end of his first tenure, grasping, greedy, and mercenary.

Besides that, Stevie ADMITS to attacking Lindsey with the intent to "kill" him. Certainly I doubt that she would have actually been able to physically kill him or even do any serious harm, but I know if someone came after me and attacked me, male or female, I would fight back.

Indeed, when John makes the strangling motion, it's not clear to me whether he meant Lindsey strangling Stevie or Stevie strangling Lindsey, because she describes grabbing Lindsey first.

Well, the quotes Mick attributes to Stevie are interesting. One has her saying to Lindsey, "You're breaking my _______ heart" and the other is "You'll never love anybody but yourself." Whatever triggered the argument, it ended up not being about the band really. But Stevie said that herself. She said that that was the day they really broke up and everything they had never said to each other before -- everything they had held back, because they might reunite -- they didn't hold back anymore.

Yeah, in his book.
Oh, since we are talking about books in this forum, I just wanted to point out to new fans that Mick has two books. One is My Life and Adventures in Fleetwood Mac which has extreme problems, but probably should be read for reading's sake.
The other book of his is essentially a coffee table book (albeit a small one), with some narrative, but his words largely serve as captions. The book is most valuable for its many beautiful pictures of the group. I find it a historical treasure. That book is My Twenty-Five Years in Fleetwood Mac.

To date, there is no one excellent history of the band. The best one, by Samuel Graham, was written in 1977 or 1978.
Although parts of Mick's My Life and Adventures in Fleetwood Mac are valuable--especially when he's allowing band members past and present to speak for themselves--it's not a reliable, objective account. The whole bogus band section is a tad too mysterious, and one senses Mick's leaving out some incriminating information that might make Davis look a little better than he ought to. What's more, anyone who thinks "Oh Daddy" was written for him is capable of all sorts of little delusions. But when compared to Bob Brunning's book, Mick's tome is a masterpiece.

Correct me if I am wrong, but in the Classic Albums Rumours documentary doesn't Christine mention that Oh Daddy was written about Mick. I think she says something about him being the manager during the late 70's early 80's period, but that for a while he wasn't the Big Daddy in the band (I assume she is referring to his bankruptices drug abuse etc) ,but now he is again.

Yes, but all of this happened long after Mick insisted the song was written for him. I get the feeling Christine is just being polite and going along with his assumption because he wanted so badly for one of those songs on the album to be about him.
The lyrics to the song are very much about a love relationship, a woman struggling with an archetypal "daddy" figure...

I dunno. I could easily see "and I can't walk away from you, baby if I tried" being about Mick/Fleetwood Mac. Maybe the song is like Sara, where there are many topics covered in one song.

Rock and no water and the sandy road

Yeah, that's what I mean. It seems like the whole fight turned quickly from Lindsey leaving the band to being about Lindsey and Stevie breaking up - again. In the video that started the topic, Stevie says "because of all the guilt I had for not leaving the band"... so what is she talking about? SnL had some kind of deal worked out from the beginning to leave at a specific point or they were going to leave at this point and she backed out?

I doubt that Lindsey and Stevie had some sort of a deal put together if one, the other or both left the band. I think it's a case of Stevie jumping on her high horse and acting like she was doing Fleetwood Mac a favor by sticking around rather than jumping ship and leaving. John says it best in this documentary, "Everything Fleetwood Mac did to her was bad... It's kind of boring... and untrue."

Yeah, I see what you mean...but it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibilities to think that SnL did have a deal when they first joined as a couple - and as the duo of BN - to get the notoriety in FM for a year or two and then go back to BN. It makes sense to me that Lindsey would have only agreed to do FM if Stevie agreed they could go back to doing their thang. Plus, I could see Stevie making that her arguing point for joining the band in the first place - "Linds, they're established, they've got a contract (which, by the way, if you haven't noticed we don't have), and they've made like a bazillion more albums than we have. Not that our stuff isn't SO much more superior - because I know it is hon since you're a genius and all that. Besides, I mean we can totally add something to this band that they desperately need. And, really we would be helping them out more than they would be helping us out. Let's give 'em two years and then we'll go back to BN. Pretty please."
Besides, I can't see why she would say she felt "guilt" over not leaving to go solo. Lindsey's solo album came out the same year as hers and he didn't leave. Neither did Christine leave when she could have or should have for all intents and purposes. I think if that was the time frame then the guilt could have been divided three ways. But, she made it sound like it was solely between she and Lindsey - this guilt she felt. That's why it sounded like a BN deal to me.
But, who knows? I'm just speculating.
michelej1
01-04-2009, 10:22 PM
- because I know it is hon since you're a genius and all that.
Too funny.
I just think she misspoke. Well, actually I think she was talking in Stevie speak, so it was normal for her, but not what anyone else would have said. I think she just means the guilt that made her stay with FM, not guilt because she didn't leave.
But yes I also think that she and Lindsey might have had a conversation or two about staying with FM long enough to get established and then returning to BN. Stevie said that it was a struggle to keep the relationship together as long as she did. So, I could see her using that as an enticement for him to help cement things together just a little longer.
Michele
I take it to mean that she didn't leave after Bella Donna became a huge success and just concentrate on her solo career.
This is how I always took that statement of hers. I don't really think there is another way she could have meant it. Look, maybe at first they thought of leaving the Mac and going back to Buckingham Nicks (you know, before the whole Mac thing became a success) but after the success of the first album and especially once Rumours came out, there was obviously no way they were going to just leave and go back to Buckingham Nicks.
These two have some of the biggest egos in music. I think Stevie means exactly what it looks like, "hey, I went back to the Mac after my solo thing even though I was on top of everything right then and could have just remained on my own!" For Lindsey to turn around 6 years later and pull out of a planned tour after recording a successful album just infuriated her because she felt that she put her own plans on hold for Fleetwood Mac and how dare he not do the same and screw them all over.
Keep in mind that at the time this documentary was from, Stevie wasn't real big on Fleetwood Mac at all and probably wasn't going to look back on things (especially the late 80's/early 90's era) with a real positive point of view.

You wrote your point so funny and novel-like that it's so great to believe it hahaha. (I have a "gone in the wind"-like scene with L&S in my mind).
And another "crystal vision" :D : lindsey singing "but if you don't love me now, you will never love me again, I can still hear you saying you will never break the chain". Stevie, you prefer to stay in FM, not to break the chain than being a musical duo with me, than being my other part in all aspects?
my god, re-interpretating songs can be quite dangerous because you may step in the kingdom of the untrue.

Yeah, I see what you mean...but it wouldn't be outside the realm of possibilities to think that SnL did have a deal when they first joined as a couple - and as the duo of BN - to get the notoriety in FM for a year or two and then go back to BN. That was apparently their intention -- or at least that's what they told the press, as indicated by an article from a Birmingham entertainment rag I posted here some years ago.

There is just a lot of Stevie hating because she is that great. For all of her "out-there-ness" she remains THE MOST successful member of that band. Just something to remember while you are all being bitter and crying for your wolf, LB... Who I also adore, but you all are ready to put him on the label for GREATNESS magazine... It's laughable. So I will, "HA!"

Err, Lindsey is great. If you are measuring "success" in terms of number of solo albums sold, then no, he doesn't sell as well as Stevie has. Doesn't make him any less of a musician - he's just not as commercially appealing on his own as Stevie is.
I love Stevie as much as the next person, but I have a lot of respect for Lindsey and his work, which he absolutely deserves. And Stevie and the rest of the Mac owe him a lot for the hard work he's put into the FM albums - without that work, those albums wouldn't be what they are.
I have no doubt that he can be very accessible to the mainstream when he puts his mind to it, but he's always appeared to be much more content doing what he wants to do, how he wants to do it, whether it sells a ton of albums or it sells no albums. And to me, that's pretty damn successful - being able to do what you want to do for a living, how you want to do it. That's definitely something I aspire to, even though I'm not a musician.
Besides, the only person I see being bitter here is you. Everyone else was having a good time. Project much? :)

Besides, I can't see why she would say she felt "guilt" over not leaving to go solo.
The "guilt" one feels when they walk away from any relationship. Im sure many of us have walked away from situations (whether good, bad or indifferent) and have felt guilt over doing so.

"Linds, they're established, they've got a contract (which, by the way, if you haven't noticed we don't have), and they've made like a bazillion more albums than we have.
LMAO! This is great!
You should write a novel on this. I would totally buy it.

Well, she broke them up romantically, but I think in that sentence she was talking about breaking up the Buckingham Nicks team and, from what we know, she did not break them up that way. But it plays into what we don't know, but suspect, about whatever early plans they had to return to BN after gaining a little exposure with FM.

But even within Fleetwood Mac, she did basically break them up. She chose to go solo. She was no longer an "ally" of Lindsey's within, or out of, the band.

Yeah, that's why I think she meant BN with her "guilt" statement. I think her going solo was more a point of contention with LB because of it not being BN - not because he was so bent out of shape about her career. I mean, hell, that had to be part of the attraction in the first place...So, in 1981, instead of a BN 2 album, there is a Nicks album and a Buckingham album.
I wonder how much of it was industry dictated though...

I think Stevie's unforgivible sin to Lindsey was that she was so very successful with her solo career. He's the musician and studio rat of the two after all and she was just the singer whose songs he always had to help her with. How could she possibly be more successful than he was? But she was and I don't think he's ever gotten over that. And at this point, it's obvious he never will.

This is a discussion of the past, not the present. I haven't even heard him bring up her name in an interview, unless asked. Unlike Stevie, I might add. And I'm a huge fan of hers, but ...
I think it's time to let all this junk go. They both have the careers they want at this moment in time.

I am sorry I didn't get the joke. It was irrational, and jerk-ish. I just get so angry when people are being sarcastic a-holes and try to make it look like a joke. I guess people from Kentucky carry a HEAVY chip on their shoulders. It's one of those, "yeah, we having running water, yeah, we are educated..." It just gets old. The other thing is that so many people on here are high and mighty and it offended me to the point that I quit coming to this site. So, I decided that I would stop caring and I guess that wasn't the right choice. Especially, to someone that didn't deserve it.

I'm feeling a little misty-eyed myself. I love that story!
I was a senior in high school and Lindsey was a junior. And we went to a Young Life meeting ~ which was a religious meeting that simply got you out of the house on Wednesday nights ~ and um, he was there and I was there and we sat down and played California Dreaming. I thought he was darling. I didn't see him again for two years and he called m eup and asked if I wanted to be in a band... And so, I was in this band with him for three and a half years ~ a band called Fritz.

The thought that Lindsey would behave that way is scary and VERY saddening. He was so good looking and is sooo talented- the thought of him going to a place like that hurts. I am sure she said something REALLY out of line for him to go to there. She kinda acts like she understood it was about to, "cost her life."

Why are people so apt to go to this place whenever there is a constructive discussion of the never-ending drama that is Stevie and Lindsey? It's pointedly clear that Stevie is the most commercially successful, and popular member. Fine, that's accepted and I'm not sure anyone would argue otherwise. But is there really a problem if some of us want to put Lindsey "on the label for GREATNESS magazine" anyway? I'll put him there. Right on the cover. Shoot, why not make the whole magazine about him because he is great and he deserves it.
I totally respect Stevie's talent and input in the band, but without Lindsey I couldn't see myself being the fan that I am. It is mainly because of him that I'm here and because of him nowadays that I even care about this band anymore, to be honest. Yes, he was a bitch when he was younger. He probably still is. A little. And I certainly don't condone physical abuse but, like everyone else here, I wasn't there to see what went down to speculate further. I love the music first. All that crazy mess is just icing on the cake.

If Stevie is the most commercially successful and popular member of Fleetwood Mac (and I agree that she is), how is it that she doesn't have nearly as much money as the wealthiest member of Fleetwood Mac?
Oh, that's right.
