Okeydokes, so I don't have all (or most:() of the Fleetwood Mac albums, and I need some more Stevie albums too. I need some help deciding what I should get next. I was going to get the expanded version of Rumours today (I have the normal one), but I decided against it, because FM's supposedly re-releasing it. I have a lot of songs from the albums on iTunes though. :D

As for the SYW question, I found a 2-disk edition too. Does anyone have it, is it worth buying? Is Christine on it? (I feel stupid asking that one.)

Another question, I found this "Fleetwood Mac - Unbroken Chain" DVD. Anyone have that?

I don't think Chris is on the 2-disc edition of SYW. The second disc is just live tracks.

Haven't watched "Unbroken Chain" either, but I thought of getting it too.

Well since Tusk being on this list means you dont yet own Tusk, my choice was easy. You need to go right out (immediately after you read this post) and purchase Tusk.

When you get around to buying SYW, just get the cheapest one you can buy. The two disk is not worth it. Just 4 extra songs 2 of them are live versions of songs will eventually be on LIB.

Are you kidding? You need to buy Tusk before anything else. It's easily the equal of Rumours, although many, including me, think it's superior.
I'd say the live albums + all those Stevie Nicks compilations and Street Angel should be last on your list.

Buy Tusk, then Tango, then Mirage, then Say You Will, then Behind The Mask, then Fleetwood Mac Live. I don't know what Stevie albums you already have but you need Bella Donna, The Wild Heart, Trouble In Shangri-La, Enchanted before anything else, then Rock A Little and The Other Side Of The Mirror and finally Street Angel if you must. Timespace and Crystal Visions are only if you don't like albums and just want the singles.

The SYW two-disc edition only has two extra songs, Lindsey singing a cover of Bob Dylan's Love Minus Zero and a pretty good Stevie track called Not Make Believe, and there's also Peacekeeper and Say You Will from the AOL sessions. It depends on how much you want those tracks. If it's really expensive I'd go for the regular edition. If it's not much more then it's probably worth it. And no Christine isn't on SYW.

The DVD Unbroken Chain isn't really worth getting imo.

Tusk, hands down, no competition. I wouldn't even bother buying Street Angel, TISL, Behind the Mask, and Timespace... or at least not right away. :D Can you tell I don't like those albums? If you get Crystal Visions, get the one with the DVD!

Okey dokes. Looks like I'm getting Tusk. :D

I'm a fairly new fan. I've known all the words to the entire Dance CD most of life, but I didn't really know who Fleetwood Mac was. Then I discovered the Bella Donna CD, and fell in love with Stevie's music. :D And of course I knew Rhiannon, that's my name. :)

Tusk absolutely changed my life. I listened to it daily for years... I think it took that long to absorb for me to appreciate it's every little facet, and for me to appreciate it fully. Tusk will always be Fleetwood Mac's creative pinnacle to me. Unfortunately (sans Tango), it has all been downhill since then for Fleetwood Mac :( .

ABSOLUTELY get Tusk next.

"Unbroken Chain" is pretty much worthless - you can get it very cheap, but it's not an authorized DVD, so there is no music in it, no concert footage, some pics you can easily see elsewhere, interviews with a fan club woman and some historian with lots of factual errors, no interviews with band members except some folk from way, way back, etc.

Unless you already have one of the greatest hits albums, then avoid the original CD version of Tusk, because it edits down "Sara" from 6 1/2 minutes to 4 1/2 minutes. The 2004 enhanced CD has the full version.

I have greatest hits, but I think I'll get the expanded version anyways.

Another question: I know for a fact, that I'm buying from Amazon. However, should I buy directly from Amazon, or one of the cheaper 'new' CD from the sellers?

I always buy used. I've bought about 20 things from Amazon in the past year, over half were either cds or dvds, and haven't had any problems, as long as I check the seller's feedback. It saves me money.

Well I'd buy tango over tusk but that is just me. Except Stevie's stuff on Tusk is absolutely amazing and pretty crap on Tango. I'd make Tango your second pick if you are going for Tusk firstly.

I have to disagree on all the Street Angel bashing. Agreed, there are some real stinkers on it, but what Stevie album DOESN'T have it's share? To me, Street Angel is the album where Stevie put aside her shawls and airy fairieness and made a simple, straightforward, rock based album that she had always needed to make. Blue Denim sounds as good to me today as any of Stevie's songs, past or present. Greta is a fun little song; the title track is heartbreaking; Listen to the Rain, Love is Like a River, and Kick It are great little rockers. Destiny and Unconditional Love are real soft rock stinkers, and Jane is just plain embarassing to listen to ("the children of the world, the forgotten chimpanzee..." UGH!). But overall, Street Angel is a solid, undervalued part of Stevie history. I wish people would give it more of a chance, including Stevie herself. I hate the fact even she writes off this album, because there really is some good stuff on there.

I have to disagree on all the Street Angel bashing.Street Angel is pretty cool. My favorites are DESTINY & LISTEN TO THE RAIN.

As for the original question: Just buy RUMOURS. That's all you need. That's the classic late '70s Mac album right there.

Some of us actually like Street Angel, Say You Will, and Stevie's songs on Tango. You might, too. And I'm starting to think that the hype of "TUSK not being Rumours 2" overshadows the actual songs themselves (much the same way Lindsey says that the "relationship drama" overshadows the actual songs on Rumours).

One thing about TimeSpace:

All of the mixes on TimeSpace are different than the mixes on the original albums. All of the songs were remixed for TimeSpace.

Buy Rumours first. But then buy Tusk! You need both of those albums to get a clearer picture of the capabilities of THAT lineup. (We need not mention the five or six other necessary FM records from previous lineups.)

Similarly, one couldn't figure out the Beatles with Sgt. Pepper alone, the White album shows the more experimental side of that group.

I agree that you should NOT avoid Street Angel. It's worth having eventually for sure. There's just no rush. Like Louie said it's maybe her most straight ahead rocking album out there. If she made something like this at a better time in her life it could've been way better.

Tusk is the best in the list since is one of the 3 albums of the late 70s era/Rumours lineup and that era was IMHO the best Fleetwood Mac one. But it's hard to choose, since I love Tango and THE DANCE.

About live albums, I'd choose THE DANCE.

SYW? well from the 2 discs edition I only like the Bod Dylan song Lindsey sings. It is not that worth it I think, but if you don't mind to the price difference, get it.

We are not sure yet if the new Rumours edition will include all the bonus tracks of the last reissue, check it when they announce the complete content.

I voted fot Tusk but.. is it the equal?? I don't think so. I don't think it's superior or less, it is just different. Less commercial, maybe more artistic, more "Lindsey".. Well the 3 first (Rumours lineup) albums are great, hard to choose though my favorite would be Rumour. Actually it depends on the day I listen it. Sometimes the white album is my fave, sometimes Tusk, and sometimes Rumours. ;)

Anyone who says to buy Street Angel but not Behind The Mask is an ignorant fool. If I listened to other people, I would have never bought Behind The Mask nor would I have branched out and listen to the likes of Billy Burnette whose music has become an integral part of my life. I'm not saying that it will work that way for you, but you have to give something a real honest chance rather than just taking the advice of someone else.

That said, you haven't gone wrong purchasing Tusk, Mirage, Tango In The Night and Say You Will. All are fantastic albums.

Well, that's your opinion, I just stated mine. I didn't say it was a universal truth, everything is subjective but I personally think it's superior to Rumours.
And of course you can rank music like that otherwise the song by the bad karaoke singer slaughtering Foreigner down the pub isn't inferior to the original, it's just "different".

I recommend you buy 'Mystery to Me' and 'In the Meantime' by Christine McVie.

I agree with that fully! Mystery To Me is absolutely the best quality Mac record. Each song is worth it's weight in gold, and can hold water on it's own. The album itself has more continuity and better flow than even Rumours Era Mac to me.

In The Meantime is much the same way... very high quality songs, one of the best Mac member's solo albums. The only Mac member's solo album that's in the same league quality wise is Lindsey's Gift Of Screws. For Christine anyway, there is some real envelope pushing material.

And Matt, I didn't discourage anyone from buying Behind The Mask  . Much like Street Angel, it's kind of a mixed bag for me though. However, there are some truly great songs... Freedom and Save Me are amongst Stevie and Christine's strongest Mac career offerings in my opinion. I do like Billy and Rick's harmonies on songs like Hard Feelings and Do You Know. But overall they just never seemed to really assimilate into the band... on this album they simply feel spliced in. Their own material seems totally unrelated to the rest of the album, much like I'm a Roadrunner and The Derelict were out of place on Penguin. Stevie's offerings here are almost sad too... but how terrible they are kinda shows just how low she was when this album came out, and makes them great artistic expression to me. But truly, I wouldn't discourage anyone from buying this (or any other) album. I wouldn't necessarily recommend anyone buy it first... but it's definitely a chapter of Mac history that is very interesting, and must not be looked over.

In the end I can't say I DON'T recommend ANY Mac offering, from any Mac era, or from any of their solo members. I can't say I've ever really warmed up to Bare Trees, but still it's a link in the chain that every hardcore Mac fan should have, simply because it's another piece of the puzzle. And these are my rambling, unabridged thoughts lol.

My comment wasn't directed toward you, but to another person who said to not even bother purchasing BTM. But I definitely agree with you about Billy and Rick being "spliced in" on the album. My bad! I must have missed that post. I just know we've 'butted heads' over the years regarding the 1990-1994 years, so I assumed that was aimed at me lol. I agree with you that Rick and Billy were absolutely talents which probably weren't given the fresh page they deserved. Rick's solo song "Intuition" is proof alone for me, and shows where the band really could have gone with him as a member. Billy, to me, however is always going to be a bit of an odd fit in my eyes. That's not to denigrate him at all... it's just how he fits in the context of the band, past and present members and their combined music included. But again, he and the 16 other members of the band past and present, are what keeps the Mac marching on (well, hobbling these days... I'm just waiting for them to Hoveround on LOL).

Hello All-- I firmly believe that BTM is the most under-rated CD in the FM legacy. "When the Sun Goes Down", "Do You Know", "Behind the Mask", "Save Me", and "Hard Feelings" are all good. I'd go for Tusk immediately and then Say You Will and Tango In The Night. Only then would I bother with Behind The Mask and Mirage.

This may get me into trouble on here but I'm really not keen on Mirage. With the exception of Gypsy and possibly Oh Diane I think it's a pretty weak album and you can get those two tracks on other compilations.

As for Stevie's solo work, I love it and can't believe anyone has said anything negative about Trouble In Shangri-La, haha! I LOVE it! It's her best solo record since her early days, and I say that even though I really like The Other Side Of The Mirror. Street Angel is best avoided, just get Maybe Love Will Change Your Mind from itunes if possible. It's the best track on there.

Hope this helps - and sorry if I've offended anyone! lol;)

I'd rather listen to ten seconds of HOLD ME than anything on "Trouble in Shangri-La." The latter is all ridiculous gloom & doom, not a minute of it believable with me.

Why are Stevie's albums so unrelievedly dour? Is that her idea of "poetic"? One critic years ago said of a Fleetwood Mac track that it "bristles with randy fun." Another critic enthusiastically called a Buckingham solo album a "sublime whoopee cushion." Can you imagine anything like that being said of Stevie's solo work?

Why doesn't she ever lighten up in her own work?

Because 'light' is not what she is about. If you want 'light', there are thousands of artists out there to listen to, but not Stevie.

I personally can totally relate to the 'gloom and doom' of the Trouble In Shangri-la album. I'm thankful for it's reflection of doom and gloom, which I prefer to call 'angst'. I think it's a great reflection of life as I know it. I think you are lucky that not a minute of it is believable to you; but for some of us, it is more than believable; it reflects the angst we go through every day, and it helps us get through. It's strange, but the negativity actually does have healing powers. For me, a song like "Hold Me" helps you get through nothing, it's just something to listen to in the background.

So obviously the world needs both. Light and angst. Balance.

Hold Me has gotten me through quite a lot and with the longing throughout, I'd say it's anything but light. Between the plea in the lyrics and the complexity of the instrumentation, it's like falling through depths of emotion. Of course, the simplicity of Stevie's voice, it's knowing and casual ache, in I Miss You and Love Is, has its very own depths. Both kinds are real enought to get buried in. Michele

I can hear the angst you describe in the vocals of this tune.. a craving... a need.... the haromonies so closely match the feelings that I derive from it... the interchange between the piano and guitar... those notes from the acoustic guitar and acoustic upright piano dancing so close to running over each other but never stepping on each other.... so Pristine... so elegant... so far from a background tune...

Both kinds are real enough to get buried in. Michele

YES YES YES YES YES. So well put. And you totally picked the right songs from TISL -- and perfectly described their "knowing and causal ache" -- one with assist from Lindsey.

Hold Me is a great thing. Thank you for this.
