Hello Dearest Friends,
There is a lot of speculation as it relates to what songs are appropriate for FM to do on this tour. It sounds as though most fans want stevie and lindsey songs exclusively. I want a little something more. I know that sounds bad, but the Standback from the SYW tour was FABULOUS!
Should Stand Back be included on this year's tour? Should ANY Stevie solos be included? What are your thoughts?
Love,
Kenn
Honestly, no. I never cared for any solo stuff in FM shows. Have they not got enough FM material? I mean, give me a break. Yeah, of course, I've danced along to Stand Back at many a FM show but it's the principle. You want Stand Back? Go to a Stevie show. Where's "Crystal" or "Gypsy" AND "Sara" in the same set? How about "Sisters of the Moon" all these years? That song used to be such a show stopper and it's never been done since '82. Of course, it could never have now that level of intensity from the old days.
To me, Stevie's material that was used for FM is a bit more ethereal and mystical. There's a certain "mood" to the songs. The solo stuff, albeit some of which was passed up by FM, tends to be edgier and maybe funkier. There's an attitude to it that is different from the FM songs. The Stevie/FM songs still hold that vision, to me, of Stevie being the "baby sister" (as she has referenced herself) in the group. Stevie in Stand Back is the baby sister leaving home! "So, I walked on down the road away from you..." In other words, I'm outta FM for a while. See ya suckas! Plus, I recall back then that it was sorta disco-ey and funky. Very Prince-ish. Of course we know why. So, on that level, it doesn't belong in a FM set. FM is not disco or funk.
But, I guarantee it'll be there since it was a "hit."

It'll be there, it has since 1987 so why change things now? Once again you'll get to see the major difference between Stevie and Lindsey. When Stevie does "Stand Back" she knocks the roof off the place, when Lindsey does "Go Insane" and "Big Love" (back to back) it's a major beer/bathroom run and half the crowd disappears.
The only time I've seen where "Stand Back" was placed in the set wrong was at the 1997 reunion tour. It was done right before "Oh Daddy" which was really bad placement. First you have the crowd up and really into it, then you bring everything to a screeching halt. Done live "Oh Daddy" is a great song, but not when it follows a barn burner like "Stand Back".

I agree, it will be there along with all the same other songs albeit they may switch out one or two and I guess that's a big change for stevie!
I saw on the FM website that they are going to release a 'NEW CD/DVD PACKAGE OF 'RUMOURS' TO BE RELEASED SIMULTANEOUSLY'
including Never Before Seen Footage and Previously Unreleased Tracks
sheesh, how many more times can they re-release the same stuff??

Nope. No, no, no. Anything but Stand Back again. Even anything solo. Just not Stand Back. Please. Not again.

Which is what made EFO such an unlikely surprise. Michele

I think they ought to do STAND BACK again, only this time use a speed oscillator onstage to manipulate Stevie's voice so that she does the whole damn song in an Alvin Chipmunk manner.
Fleetwood Mac concerts have always been weak on laughs, & it's high time they start throwing banana peels.

It really gets me, everytime I go to a Fleetwood Mac show with my family they are totally caught off gaurd when they do Stand Back. My family has seen every tour since the 70's. I mean Stand back has been played on every Stevie/FM tour since the song was released. Its not much of a surprise anymore hehe.

I am ALL about Gypsy, Sara, and Angel!!! I want to hear ANGEL! That is my jam! I was watching my Tusk DOC, the other day and it was so refreshing! I do love standback, it is one of my favorites. I want it in the set IN ADDITION to so many others. I can agree that certain Stevie solo stuff, i.e. Edge of 17 and Stop draggin, does not fit, but in the end... She is a HUGE reason that the sales are as reasonable as they are. I understand that the sales aren't good, but she is a force of the sales being ok...

Although I'd sell a kidney to see Stevie sing Stand Back live before my eyes, I don't think it fits in a FM set. The only solo song that does belong in a FM show is Go Insane, just because it sounds so damn good with Big Love.
Consider why Stand Back was included in the first place. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that it was first put in the set on the Shake The Cage tour because without being able to do Lindsey's songs, they needed some hits to fill up the set. Is that still an issue without Christine?

Probably more so, since she's responsible for a majority of the band's hits.
This is probably what the set list will look like:
The Chain
Dreams
Second Hand News
Never Going Back Again
Rhiannon
Gypsy
Big Love
Landslide
Gold Dust Woman
I'm So Afraid
Silver Springs
Tusk
Go Your Own Way
World Turning
Don't Stop
I Know I'm Not Wrong(?)
Sara(?)
So you almost have to have "Stand Back" to have a whole show. Some have speculated that maybe "Seven Wonders" will be added, but I doubt it.

Probably something along those lines. I wouldn't be surprised if Mick was the one who wanted to do it. It was 1987, just a year after the ROCK A LITTLE tour, which Mick camp-followed for a bunch of shows & played congas onstage during. In L.A. he was wild & crazy for STAND BACK. When it came time the following year for Mac to tour, I wouldn't be surprised if he was the one who said, "Let's do STAND BACK."
Stevie probably said, "Well ... OK."
And Chris probably said, "Whatever. I don't care any more."

I have a good idea for a setlist thread. What do you think the setlist for the Tango in the Night Tour would have been if Lindsey had participated? Would we have heard a full band performance of Big Love? Do you think they would have played Family Man since it was a single?

Although if it means leaving out a FM number I would say cut SB.

Man, I certainly hope the set is longer than 15 songs.
As for Stevie solo material, I would prefer it not be in the show. FM has plenty of amazing songs that they could put in this set. They don't need Stevie material.

I hope that Lindsey does Big Love in the same manner he did Go Insane on his last tour -- with a full band. The acoustic version, though impressive, has been played into the ground.
Though highly unlikely, I wish they would do some Buckingham Nicks songs.
"Stand Back" should just take a break and stand back! I agree that it ,stylistically, really muddles the lines between the group aura and Stevie's "thing." The worst example of this is when "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You" was performed when Billy and Rick were in the band.
With no new material, this would have been the perfect time to re-release the Buckingham Nicks album (deluxe version!) and tour behind it. I think that would have spurred more interest than the strikingly contradictory Hits/Unleashed theme.

"Standback" is great. Don't get me wrong. But if I'm going to a Fleetwood Mac show I really just want to hear Fleetwood Mac songs. JMO. I mean pull out "Sisters of the Moon" or "Angel" or if they want to really mix it up hey throw in "Frozen Love" while your at it. Like I said JMO but I would rather have a lesser known Fleetwood Mac song than "Standback". If they play "Standback" will I be up dancing? Hell to the yes! Would I rather they did "Tango in the Night"? Definitely!:D

I think we'll probably see it once again, since it fits into the "Hits" theme. I actually prefer FM's Stand Back to Stevie solo. It seems to have more energy and, since she doesn't have a whole show to carry, I think she puts a bit more into it...

I'm really torn here. I want her to just do Fleetwood Mac songs on Fleetwood Mac tours. But its hard for me to watch Live in Boston and wish "danm I wish she didn't do that song!" It's easily my favorite song of hers along with Gold Dust Woman. And really As AWSEOME as Gold Dust Woman, it rocks, but in a slow burn way. Stevie needs at least one song in her set that is that fast paced all out rocking numbers. And really none of her Fleetwood Mac songs fill that void (Dreams, Sara, Gypsy, GDW, Landslide, Beautiful Child, Silver Springs) Rhiannon SHOULD be rocking, lord knows it rocked harder then anything in the 70's but the sad reality is it just doensn;t anymore. Stevie's solo set is filled with rocking songs (Fall From Grace, Stand Back, Edge of 17, I Need To Know, Rock and Roll, Face the Promise etc.) but she just doesn't have an arsenal of fast paced Fleetwood Mac songs. Even if she brought back Sisters of the Moon, it rocks hard, but it has that slow build-up and isn't fast paced from beginning to end like Stand Back. So unless they do Rhiannon completely different complete with the guitar solo, Stand Back almost has to be there for Stevie.

Of course, the live "Stand Back" WAS released as part of The Chain box set, so. . . . I guess it could count now as a Mac song.

Well said. I happen to love the energy it brings to every show I have ever been to.
The friends that I have brought to solo and FM shows over the years, who are not serious fans, all seem to know SB and recognize it and really get into it more than any other song.
It is such a signature Stevie song that at this point to leave it out would be the equivalent of her leaving out Dreams in her solo set. Aint gonna happen, ever.

I tend to think that if Lindsey had toured, we would have seen several different songs: Family Man, Big Love, Eyes of the World, and certainly a much better representation of the Tusk album than what was actually played (I believe only Brown Eyes?). It would have been completely different than what was actually played, that's for sure.
Edit: As for Stand Back, I am mixed. I guess it's sort of become a Mac staple at this point and the performance is usually good. I just would rather have one of Stevie's FM contributions over something solo. I wouldn't really mind if they did about 25-30 songs and each showcased one or two solo songs as well as one or two Buckingham Nicks songs and even one to two pre-1975 Mac songs. If they do play SB, I really hope the 2 minute drum intro is gone though. Not a fan.

I agree, well said. SB just brings that level of energy up a few notches.
Plus since she does not have to carry a whole show, Stevie's energy level should be higher to carry off some of these songs like SB or even SOTM which is one of those slow burn songs but then can kick into high gear if so desired. I mean she proved she can do it with FFG and Rock and Roll, so there should be no reason not to have a couple of really rocking songs in the set.
Edit: I know this thread is mostly about SB, but am really wondering how they will treat Rhiannon in this upcoming set. Will they use the screen art or will she wear her top hat/scarf? Will the guitar be more rocking? Will they get rid of the piano intro and just rip right into the song? The same could be said for GDW. Solo is so much different than with FM. I so want Stevie and Lindsey to interact at the ending. But I digress... SB fits into an FM set without it being too intrusive. And as mentioned earlier though, if they remove SB and replace it with a kick ass version of SOTM, then I can most definitely live with that.

I would hope they put the longer guitar part back in Rhiannon. One move that I would like them to steal from Stevie's show is the way the drapery fell when the fast part of Rhiannon started, that was quite a rollicking effect. It sort of reminded me of the Proud Mary build you see so many performers use. They start off slow and then kick into high gear. The contrast creates instant energy.
Also, something I'd like them to steal from Tom Petty's show is using the strobe light on Stevie. The way it creates that stop/start movement. Speed. Almost spastic. It made it seem like Stevie was moving a lot, when she actually wasn't. I loved that. I don't know what song they could use it on, but it excited Petty's audience.
Petty's show also made me wish FM had a call and answer song, where the audience alternated singing part of the chorus with him (i.e. "learning to fly is the hardest part.") With FM, the audience sings along with Landslide, but having a call and answer interactive was a fresh spin for me. Michele
