I suspect it's some kind of combination. . . but it's great to get another perspective, and such a touching one. Wow! Imagine!! How close we were to almost getting Sheryl in Mac. THANK YOU GOD FOR THAT BABY!!!!

She had all these really important plans, because it was her first Mother’s Day, and she was also on the road, so she had to escape out of that for three days. I said, 'You have to do it, you have to come.' That was on a Thursday. She said to me, 'Are you trying to talk me out of this by telling me how difficult this is going to be for me?' I said, 'I'm not. I'm just being truthful with you. Imagine this, when we went on the Say You Will tour, we thought it was forty shows. It was 135 shows. Nobody knew that, but that’s what it was. And that was for an unhappy tour.'
If Stevie honestly thought the tour was only going to be 40 dates, she's even more oblivious than I thought. If she didn't want the tour to be any longer, she could have refused to sign off on any of the additional legs that were already pre-planned and ultimately added- bringing the insanely profitable tour to a screeching halt (like Chris did with the Dance tour)
I'm sick of her complaining about the SYW tour- whether it be the old "boys club" excuse, or how being in Fleetwood Mac is like being in the army (a heartless, reprehensible comparison in the time of war... comparing a pampered rockstar life to a term of combat service for your country) or now the "it was too loooooong! I was sooooo unhappy!". She took home an average of about $150K for each and every one of those 135 shows. I don't know, Stevie, what would you rather have? $6M and be home after 2 1/2 months with no complaints, or $20M+ over a period of less than a year and a half (with numerous extended breaks) and the "right" to complain and bitch about unhappy it all was?
In three years, Stevie's going to say "I thought it was just the 40 dates for the Hits tour, but then we recorded the album, did another 150 concerts around the world, and Lindsey got on my nerves the entire time! Poor meeeeeeee! I had no idea that would happen! Time I could have written my autobiography and released my Rhiannon movie, but I had to serve in the army instead!"
Boo f'ing hoo, Stevie.

Stevie has the right to complain about anything she wants to at this point in her life because she's earned it as far as i'm concerned. Whether people like it or not, Fleetwood Mac is all about Stevie, and that's the way it is...especially with Christine out of the picture.

While I don't disagree that there are times when Stevie should tone down the complaints (even if I don't see it as severely as you do), where do you get that she was whining about the length of the tour?
All she said was that even an unhappy tour can go for an exceptionally long time -- the implication being that a happy one could go on even longer than that.
Sounds like it was just something she wanted to make sure that Sheryl was aware of.

Okay THAT I disagree with... There are plenty of Mac fans that enjoy Lindsey over Stevie, and likely Mick and John over the both of them... I can tell you that much.... I'm not one of them per say, I like them both and all together... But I know they are out there in greater numbers then you might think.
I actually like her complaining.... She's actually pretty funny with some of the stuff she comes up with.... If it were all rosey and happy... We'd think she was on crack!

Luke chill out its just an article. ;-) We all know stevie can be a bit demanding and flighty at times. I always give her the benifit of the doubt.
For a woman in the rock n roll world it must be relly hard for her. She is pretty much on her own and yet commands a lot of power. But like a good "witch" she uses it compassionalty and wisely. I think she feels like she needs to be a peacekeeper and that many many people depend on her for their livings which she feels responsible for.
I bet it is like being in the army and I am an ex military person and take no offense what so ever witht the analagy. I do not see any derogatory connection between using that term and being at war.
Just sayin. :-)

Yes, you're absolutely right. What i meant by that was, if you go to, let's say your workplace, and ask 10 of your co-workers at random who the individual members of Fleetwood Mac are, i can almost guarantee that 8/10 will say Stevie Nicks...and then give a pause to think of the other 3. It's mostly because to the masses, Stevie is synonymous with Fleetwood Mac as a whole.

Stevie Nicks Talks Fleetwood Mac + Sheryl Crow Drama!!!!!!
December 12, 2008 11:50 AM
Photo: Miller/Getty
Last night we had the extreme pleasure of chatting with Stevie Nicks, who in January will release a DVD titled Live In Chicago, featuring takes of many of her greatest hits with Fleetwood Mac and her stellar solo career. It's truly awesome.
In conjunction, Nicks is releasing a companion CD titled The Soundstage Sessions, offering live renditions of her lesser-performed cuts like "Beauty and the Beast," "Fall from Grace," and her covers of Dave Matthews Band's "Crash" and Bonnie Raitt's "Circle Dance."
As one of our greatest singers ever -- and a rock star of the highest order -- Stevie couldn't have been sweeter, funnier or more down to earth.
We talked about her recent 60th birthday (she took her mom and her friends to see a production of the play Wicked, of course), the upcoming Fleetwood Mac tour (she can't wait), as well as the drama surrounding Sheryl Crow's involvement in the Mac.
As you may remember, last March Crow announced that she would be joining Mac, saying, "We definitely have plans for collaborating in the future, and we'll see what happens. I think that's going to be next year."
Although it appears to fly in the face of what Lindsey Buckingham told us, Stevie told us that Crow was, in fact, invited to go on the Mac's first trek in nearly five years. (Look for the rest of the interview in the next issue of Rolling Stone.)
Heres what Stevie had to say:
"What happened is that it was absolutely discussed and [Sheryl] absolutely was invited to join the band. The reason was I wanted another woman in the band, because I missed Christine so bad that it was just really hard for me to be in the boys club. What happened was, really... everybody thinks it was just because Sheryl got really excited and told the world about it a little bit too early. That wasn't what it was. I started explaining to Sheryl what it was going to be like to be in this band. It's all-encompassing, and for somebody with a new baby...for a woman in her forties with a new baby, and as loving and as nurturing as Sheryl Crow is... if you know her, you know that she just is a caretaker. We had a conversation at the beginning of this year. I said, 'I rented a studio,' and it was around Mother's Day. 'You need to come in and we need to play music for two days, because we should. It's not an audition for us, it's not an audition for you, it's just us to play music. We'll set it all up and we'll be on a stage and have great monitors, and all your pianos and everything will be set up. We're just going to rock for two days, go out to dinner and hang out. We need to do that.'
'So it is kind of like joining the army. Personally, it's going to be very hard for you. I'm not trying to talk you out of it, I'm just trying to let you know what it is.' So she said, 'Okay, I'm going to think about it,' and she called us back two days later. We were in the car, on speaker, and she said, 'I think I'm going to have to pass.'
I said, 'Honey, as Stevie, your friend,' who spent three solid years with her working on Trouble in Shangri-La in ’98, ’99, and 2000, I said, 'I think you're making the right decision. As Stevie Nicks, I'm disappointed. But as your friend, I think this is the right decision.'
Sheryl Crow passed on Fleetwood Mac, and I want that out there, because people seem to be getting different stories about this. That’s what happened."

You do have a point, but, the way I read the passage, it came off that the length of the tour and the fact that she had no idea it would be that long was what made it untenable. I don't think its unreasonable to think that by saying this, she was also somehow insinuating that since something so unhappy went on for so long, she had no real choice in the matter (responsibilities to those "lesser" in the FM food chain aside), when she obviously did. It was never too unhappy or untenable for her to stop signing off on as many dates as possible until the demand ran out (in early Summer '04)

I honestly don't think Stevie was trying to play the martyr here.
The gist of what she was trying to convey to Sheryl, as I read it, is that you never really know how long a tour with Fleetwood Mac might last. You can assume that you'll probably only do X amount of shows, but soon find yourself committing to far more -- even if you aren't necessarily having the best time.
It's the old "Fleetwood Mac is bigger than all of us" thing.
At any rate, I'm not saying you're wrong -- you and I just viewed her intentions differently.

Well, if the only reason Stevie could give for going to that studio for two days was "because we should", then I'm not surprised that Sheryl questioned its importance. And yes, Stevie does act like the number of tour dates is determined by drawing a ping pong ball from a bingo cage. "We drew 135! What bad luck!"

Well, Lindsey's response to it came off kind of mildly horrified. I know I was horrified when I read what Sheryl said, like, nooooo, you can't do that!
So perhaps it wasn't quite that the whole band really thought bringing Sheryl along was a good idea...

Well, she was. And Lindsey had to throw in that Stevie was mad at Sheryl too. So, I don't think Stevie's version of what happened is the truth, but I know why she put it out there, because Lindsey just went loco with his scenario. Stevie said that people were getting a different story about Sheryl's involvement and she wanted to counteract it, she just didn't say where they were getting that story from: Curly.

I wouldn't get offended by this. Stevie wasn't comparing touring with serving in any branch of the armed forces during war. She's made similar statements for years, and in the context of this article she was trying to explain to Sheryl that being in a band like Fleetwood Mac is like being in the army because you can't "call out". You can't not go to rehearsals because it's mother's day. You can't sleep till noon when the bus leaves at 9 am for the next venue, just because the baby was up all night. She was basically saying, unlike a regular job, and similar to the Army in this case, the commitment doesn't stop when you leave the arena to go back to your hotel room. As others have said, she wasn't even doing it to complain, but to be straight forward with Sheryl.
I think Stevie has a very clear understanding of the sacrifice and commitment the people serving in all the branches of the military make, and has shown her support publicly in a time when it perhaps is not that fashionable to do so

She's saving face with Sheryl. Lindsey even said that Stevie and Mick were pissed with Sheryl for the announcement, and I wouldn't be surprised if they were, but in public she's trying to sound more like it was friendly advice that meant she didn't join the band over band democracy.

In case you don't find it at the grocery or bookstore, what I highly doubt, try the news stands at big train stations or at the airport. At least that is where I get all my (foreign) magazines from.
