How could someone writing a paper like this manage to have numerous misspellings (i.e. Lindsay, Rumors, and Carol instead of Carole King)? Am I just too much of a stickler about that sort of thing?

Definitely not. If you're going to write a paper like this, you need to get your facts right.

"...let’s face it, that Fleetwood Mac tour
[1998 Dance tour] was all about Stevie Nicks."
(Dunn, 1998, p. 30).

bogus.

Hmm...lets hope the person who posted that link wasn't the person who wrote the paper or they may be feeling hurt right about now...

Well, I could've said worse, lol - that might not make me NICE, but it'd be true. The misspellings are pretty silly, and other things, like word choice, sentence structure, and the way the thoughts are laid out leave a lot to be desired. There's a grammatical error right out of the gate with that unnecessary apostrophe after Stevie's name in the very first sentence (second word, even). Either my high school English teachers were A LOT harder on me than everyone else got, or this is not a very good paper. I'm voting for the latter, particularly since it appears to have TWO authors. ;-)

None of the sources cited are any later than 1998, and no mention is made of TISL, SYW or Crystal Visions, and the way it's set up lead me to believe this was something written in the late 90s and just an old paper the OP stumbled across.

Actually I noticed the "Nick's" which has always annoyed me when people talk about Stevie.

Sadly teachers don't seem to be as hard these days as they once were. The amount of people who can't spell scares me. Sure I might make a typo or two but I can generally spell.

Funnily enough my sister-in-law is a teacher and her spelling is awful. What hope do the kids have?

I blame it all on the fact that kids don't read books these days.

Okay I'm wandering off topic now. :sorry:

Hahaha.

I get alerts in my email, so when this came through, the "gotcha" part was well below the fold, and I thought, "Well, now I have to confess to being the devil, but all's fair in poorly written college papers and...war...or something..."

But oy - I agree about the reading and such, Chris, and my kids end up with teachers that can't spell for **** from time to time and it drives me up a tree. In kindergarten, my daughter's teacher had her class each make a little book about volcanoes, which they had been learning about. Mimi wrote a sentence using the word "volcanoes," and her teacher crossed it out and "corrected" it with "volcanos."

I was tempted to go up there, whack her upside the head, and be like, "Seriously? I mean...really? And you are the one with the degree that is supposed to help you shape young minds? Crap in a hat."

It's a rotten paper, but you can't blame the authors. Behind the whole silly idea of gabbing about Stevie Nicks under the guise of serious rumination on some middling lit-crit theories lies what Richard Mitchell used to refer to as a "porseffor of Englinsh." He's to blame. This porseffor of Englinsh doesn't teach his charges to think or write well. He passes out some mimeographed twaddle from his U. press book on Kenneth "Who The Hell Cares" Burke, & then assigns them all to write a paper "analyzing" any old pop-cultural twaddle of their choosing "through" a "reading" of Burke's theory on this & that. I swear, when porseffors of Englinsh aren't grandstanding or indoctrinating, they're wasting time (the students') & money (the students' parents').

It's all so numbnuts.

My English teacher would probably line my class up against a wall and shoot us if someone wrote a paper like that. Even if my spelling does suck, it's not my teacher's fault. My twin Roxanne is in the same class and she spells perfectly well.

I don't know - I think I can blame the authors, too. Even if their porseffors of Englinsh (fantastic term, going to steal it, k thx bai) are grandstanding, indoctrinating and wasting time, the students can still apply some basic grammar to their prattle.

I've never been to university, so I don't what all goes on there, but I do make a living via scribbling, and I would never dream of releasing something into the world with basic mistakes like that - even if my ideas sucked and I couldn't think my way out of a wet paper bag.
