Just got back from the Nokia Theater.
Lindsey put on a great finale.
I’m not sure if there was a sound problem during Great Day or not. Lindsey did seem to be looking at his guitar and I noticed that once Love Runs Deeper started, the sound was 10 times louder and the base throb 100 times thumpier.
I don’t think I’ve seen the show since Anaheim and it hasn’t changed much. At the close of Go Insane, I noticed Lindsey turned away from the audience and was taking his giant, tip toe steps towards the back of the stage, to give the song a more dramatic ending.
At the beginning of Tusk, the lights came on when Lindsey murmured the “why don’t you tell me” lyrics and then went off again during the silence, creating an ominous vibe to go along with the drum beats.
He said the album has been out about a month, taking me back to the very first concert when the album wasn’t out at all. It seems wrong to end the tour just a month after the album debuts.
His voice continues to be beautiful. In the past, so often at the end of Big Love he would just be screaming instead of singing. But not these days. His tenor is so sweet. I wonder where he got it from, because it seemed to be completely lost by the time the SYW tour ended. I hear about the way they steal organs from homeless men on the street. Lindsey may have stolen a true tenor from one.
For “Shut Us Down” he seems to take special care to enunciate every word. The ending guitar riff is even longer than before. He takes his time getting to the “look ma, one hand!” close. He hugs his guitar to the applause that falls afterwards. He loves SUD so much, I’m rather surprised he hasn’t divorced Kristen and married it.
The introduction to Did You Miss Me is now about 30 minutes long, it seems. He talks about the big machinery of Fleetwood Mac and the small machinery of an artist who specializes in “esoterica”. He says that Warner Bros. favors the big machinery and he doesn’t blame them. If he was a record executive, if he had to choose between his work and Fleetwood Mac's, essentially between big sales and “no sales” he thinks he would choose BIG sales too.
He says being part of Fleetwood Mac made his small career possible and he’s at a point now where he doesn’t care about the outcome. He knows his work has only a few listeners and those listeners are us in the audience. Having become accustomed to Warner Bros. not being enthusiastic about his career, he says we can imagine his surprise when he gave them GOS and he got a call a week later and the record company said, “we love it, babe.” I think Lindsey assumed a British accent for the “babe” part. He says he was surprised and happy when they told him they wanted Did You Miss Me for the single, because he didn’t even expect to have a single. Yet, they chose this song to start sending out to radio formats.
Watching Lindsey sing World Turning, I start to think that the next time I see him, he may be with Fleetwood Mac. What it would mean to me to see him singing those lines while sharing the mic with the other guy who wrote it, as he did in days of yore. Just one more time.
He sits down for the drum solo in World Turning, but then leaves the stage a few minutes into it and doesn’t return until it’s over. Wally has increased his antics. Doing drum pantomines, slapstick. He’s got a whole routine ago. If you’ve ever wanted to see the return of the mime, then Wally is your guy.
When Lindsey did the band introductions, he went and hugged each guy, even climbing onto the drum kit to hug Wally. He says that when Wally came aboard, finally their family of 4 was complete.
Brett said that it feels bittersweet to mention how great Lindsey is at this point of the tour. He tells Lindsey, “it’s been a great ride.”
Lindsey says, “there’s much more to come.” Brett says, “that’s right brother!”
When Lindsey later tells the audience this is the last concert in support of GOS, a moan of disappointment rises from the crowd. Lindsey then says, “this MAY be the last show in support of the album.”
After Treason, when the band takes its bow, Lindsey pulls all the men into a circle and they hoot together. A final hurrah. Then Brett, Neale and Wally leave the stage. Since some of you have gotten BTLH, I was hoping for that, but he ends with Time Precious Time. The last setlist in the tour is the same as the first. It reinforces my belief in the power of cycles.
As Lindsey sings the final words to TPT his eyes search the audience as he chants “Remember, remember, remember, remember, remember . . .” with a pronounced choke in his voice. Of course, the melodrama makes me want to “forget, forget, forget!” However, he’s perfect even when he’s annoying. He’s perfect because he’s annoying. Maybe he’s just perfect.
To the left, to the right, up and down, and around. That’s right baby. That’s right.

New York Daily News, October 17, 2008
http://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/music/2008/10/17/2008-10-17_lindsey_buckingham_has_gift_of_screws.html
The fastest fingers in the West belong to Lindsey Buckingham. The digits of this L.A.-based musician fly over the fretboard of his guitar in a furious blur. His forte remains the manic arpeggio. In fact, Buckingham kicks off his latest solo album, "Gift of Screws," with a classic one, letting his fingers flick through the notes in a flurry that will make your head spin.
Guitar wizardry ranks as just one of Buckingham's talents. He's best known as the lead architect of Fleetwood Mac, the guy who shapes the basic songs written by Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie and himself into sterling pop formations. Yet only on his solo albums can he delve as far he desires into the quirks of production and the eccentricities of song form.
By those standards, "Gift of Screws" ranks as one of Buckingham's most pop-friendly works. It follows a satisfying, mostly acoustic CD, "Under the Skin," from two years ago.
While the new album opens with another low-wattage/high-velocity foray, it includes some songs frothy enough for Mac to cut (like "Love Runs Deeper"), as well as one that taps into the band's deeper blues roots ("Wait for You.")
It's no mean feat to balance pop craft with fancy production as well as Buckingham does. But he impresses even more with his playing, as in the opener, "Great Day," where the fingerings rate as equally furious and agile.

It was fun. I only hope I can see the first and the last show for FM over the next two years.
I forgot to mention that tonight at the end when Lindsey said that the audience was wonderful and it's gratifying to play rock for appreciative listeners he smiled and said, "there's that esoteric **** again."

Great show tonight! I didn't expect to be so sad it was over, considering I only went to two shows and they were my first solo Lindsey experiences. But by the last song, as he was getting noticeably more choked up, I couldn't help be really sad that it was ending. While we may see Fleetwood Mac again sometime soon, nothing can ever beat leaning on the stage for the last half hour, having Lindsey stradle the amp to get closer to the edge of the stage, so close that I was looking directly up at him as he soloed the end of GYOW. How can that be beat? He owns the stage, he is completely in his element when he is up there. It still blows my mind that I was able to experience this at all, to be so in the moment with a favorite musician and to find myself flashing back every once in awhile to other versions of him that I've watched and listened to for years and years before he was ever right on stage in front of me. I'm being real corny now, but I'm very happy I had a chance to see him this way and hope beyond hope that it's not the last time he goes out on his own in the near future.

You know, that is what really grabs your heart, the being able to flash back. I attended my first concerts without my mom when I was 16. One concert was the Jacksons. The other was Fleetwood Mac. I look at Lindsey and I see so many other images of him from the past and I guess I see images of my younger self as well.
And that's sort of what I meant about World Turning. You know, I enjoyed it all this tour. But tonight, ,maybe because it was the end, I saw him standing there saying he just wants someone to get him through the night and in my mind I saw Christine sharing that mic, from days past and I felt this wave of nostalgia. I was so thankful for GOS and how Lindsey has grown so much, just in the last few years. Yet, I was thinking of the past and all that's irretrievable too. I was overcome with such satisfaction and such wistfulness at the same time.

Great review, Michele!
I saw Lindsey twice the last tour - once in the front row of Town Hall (directly in front of a huge speaker), and then again in the Starland Ballroom, which is essentially a bar, where it's GA the entire place. Neither one was great - sound sucked from where we sat at Town Hall (way too loud, speaker was about 2 feet away), and at Starland, the crowd was horrible and really didn't give him a break.
Last night made everything right. Our seats were as close to dead center as you can get without actually being there , and the crowd was great. He and the whole band seem way more tighter and together than they were the last time we saw them. He did seem wistful that this was the end of this run, but I really look forward to the FM tour next year (is that really happening?).

Michele I can't believe you were there in my town! lol. Sorry I missed you. But SO glad you got to see Lindsey and that I also got to see Lindsey. He was amazing last night. And I agree with you about the change in his voice -- as a singer. During Shut Us Down there parts of the verses where he added new vocal twists, lilts that just devestated me. I actually cried.

You have summed up the Lindsey experience very well. I didn't see FM in Lindsey's afro stage, I saw him right after that, but I became a fan when Rumours came out and I look back over the years with great fondness. Lindsey represents all the different phases in my life as well and I'm glad for the growth he has made these last few years.
I saw him at the Keswick on Saturday and I was blown away by nostalgia too..

I wonder if Lindsey feels and thinks that way, when he's up there or if he's firmly rooted in the present. Well, when he has flashbacks, I guess it's more likely to happen when he's onstage with FM rather than solo. When Stevie's beside him, it could be 1979 or it could even be Fritz.
Last night I laughed when Lindsey introduced Big Love and said it was the last single before he left the group to regain his sanity. Then he emphasized, "I did regain it," as if we needed convincing.
To his persistent questions, I answer:
Yes, in the morning.
Yes, in the evening and especially when I'm bound to dream!

There was a lady who was able to make these chortling calls which started in her throat. It sounded almost like an internal yodel. They got Lindsey's attention and a tall guy in the audience took out his flashlight and turned it on the lady so that Brett and Lindsey could see her from the stage. She then made the warrior calls again and Lindsey marveled that he didn't even know how it was possible.

It was probably my most favorite concert I've ever been to (though both Iris Dement shows and the Scritti Politti were even beyond. . .). It'd be hard to describe the energy that was generated, the sense of being in awe of a live talent, and the emotional revelations (the "sweetness" of his singing and phrasing on "Shut Us Down" was so astounding, and he got soooo emotional during it -- and not even in that obviously acting Lindsey way -- that I just burst into tears!).
And of course being so close. I had great seats and I was sure to get right up against the stage in time for Go Your Own Way. I SWEAR at one point Lindsey looked over at me and chuckled. Can't imagine why!? Maybe it was when I said "Wagner would be proud!" Anyway, another nice bit was when Lindsey thanked the audience for being so great and mentioned it was the last show, somebody yelled out: "Thank you for saving us a place". . . Lindsey was impressed by the pun.
ETA: Oh, yeah, and who was that woman who got engaged at the previous night's show (during "Shut Us Down"?)? Is she a Ledgie or anything? Anyway, if she's reading: Congrats! I remembered you from the AC show when you kept saying: "It's going to be a great day!"

Buckingham Wraps Tour in New York
Lindsey Buckingham wrapped up his third solo tour last night (October 19th) in New York City's Nokia Theatre in the heart of Times Square. In addition to songs from his solo catalogue including numbers from his latest album, Gift Of Screws, Buckingham tore through such Fleetwood Mac classics as "Tusk," "I Know I'm Not Wrong," "Never Going Back Again," "Big Love," "World Turning," "I'm So Afraid," "Go Your Own Way," and "Second Hand News."
Buckingham's new album, Gift Of Screws, features songs co-written with his wife Kristin and his 10-year-old son Will. We asked him if after becoming a family man later in life, there was a specific moment when he realized that he had made his wife and kids a priority above his music: "I found myself in the situation before I was fully acclimated to it, I think, y'know? It just... It didn't sink in right away because old patterns do die hard. I can't say that I remember a particular moment, but I do know that one of the great joys and comforts of being a father in particular -- and a spouse as well -- is that you sort of have this biological imperative that you know that you would put them first in any situation."
Gift Of Screws, which was released last month, features appearances by Fleetwood Mac bandmates John McVie and Mick Fleetwood. After a five-year hiatus, Fleetwood Mac is expected to hit the road sometime in 2009.

The Nokia is totally built for sound, I'm sure the vid this guy has is amazing.
I thought AC beat for energy, but for sound quality this can't be beat. And Time Precious Time ... well I'd like to revote GoS now after experiencing that last night.
One sad note. One fan felt it necessary to snare Lindsey's setlist. The roadie was really upset about it, even called security, so I'm sure it really means something to LB. I collect setlists, but I would never do that without being handed it. But if the person who got the two "legal" copies from the roadies lives here at the Ledge, please post a scan!

He turned my blues purist bf into a card-carrying LB/FM fan.
First with the AC show (bf is the one who took the cool "Go Your Own Way" video) and then again at Nokia (particularly with the righteous "Time Precious Time"), he has been brought into the web of understanding and enjoyment.

At one point, he leaned over w/the guitar and no one was reaching out to touch it like they had at the other end of the stage, and he said "c'mon! c'mon!" to me, motioning that I should "play," which was amusing. (So, of course, I obeyed. ;))
I've had guitar solos played right over my head before, but I don't think I can describe last night's solo-over-head experience without sounding, well, in Lindsey's words, "rude." Suffice it to say, I will be blushing if there's footage of this on YouTube.
In any case, his intensity (and his dedication) can't be beat. I'm not much of a fan of "Time Precious Time," but last night's "remembers" had me, for a moment, hooked. And "Treason" is beautiful live.
Please, Lindsey, just a couple more months of the "little machine" before you go back to the "big machine"?

A couple set lists were given out. However the one in front of Lindsey's mic was stolen and the main roadie was really upset about it.
Wow. That's horrible.

What's with the people stealing setlists? Some guy did that in Kansas City too and the bearded roadie was pissed. People really need to get a grip.

Honestly, I never did understand why setlists are such a demanded thing. After the show, Lindsay (not Lindsey) gave michelle and I a fake setlist as a joke since we'd spent a total of about 2 hours chatting with him over the weekend.
If any of you ever get the chance to meet him, he's a GREAT guy! He's the guy that plays offstage behind Brett

An up close and personal view of The Crotch. I don't mind being rude!
(And sharing in the experience. Although, really, we were trying--very hard--to look up at his face instead. That had to count for something, right?
But, that was...one for the books!)
It was an awesome concert. I've shared this with my buddies at the concert, but I was so into Time, Precious Time (which I love anyway. I must be the only one!) and how choked up he got, that by the end of that song, and the end of the concert--after seeing him four times this tour, I was shaking like a leaf. I've never had that happen at his concerts before.
Very emotional. And very wonderful. I'm so proud of him for keeping his promises about his recordings, for sharing so much new stuff with us and for being his wacky (and verbose) self. I am a HUGE FM fan, but even I would give up the idea of an FM tour if I could continue to see him do his solo stuff on a regular basis.

People really need to get a grip. I think it is strange. I notice in shows I have attended, after the lights are up, peeps dart to the stage seemingly scavanging for anything they can get hands on...picks, setlists, dna, etc.
If one wants a momento of the show, there is afterall the ticketstub...ahhhh the good'ole days... remember...

I actually collect setlists just cause I like to ... that actually started with the Derek Trucks Band because the drummer creates a work of art every night around the setlist ... but I would never Never NEVER just rip it off the stage like that.
Maybe I like them because I forget too quickly what order everything was played in, haha.

I had already seen him do that live in Cleveland, but when I heard that Keswick version, I nearly died. I say this a lot about his stuff, but that is among the most beautiful things that I have ever heard.

I touched his guitar at the Arrowhead Pond in 2003. It felt funny: warm but firm, kinda sharp, slightly bent, still vibrating from the previous power chord.

You press the attar from the rose or flower to get perfume. That's the lyric that LB took from Emily Dickinson. So, I was just saying NY after the concert, after all the essential oil was wrung from Lindsey:laugh:.
