Legendary actor Paul Newman dies at age 83
"Paul Newman, the legendary actor whose steely-blue eyes, good-humored charm and advocacy of worthy causes made him one of the most renowned figures in American arts, has died, his spokeswoman told CNN today. Newman was 83. He died of cancer Friday at his home in Westport, Connecticut, said spokeswoman Marni Tomljanovic. "
"Paul Newman's life and legendary career included ten Oscar nominations, a 50-year marriage and generous charity work."

I liked Paul best in the two southern cornpone Tennessee Williams adaptations he did with Richard Brooks in the '50s: CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF & SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH.
However, excellent as Newman was in both of those, he was essentially support -- to Judith Anderson & Madeleine Sherwood in the former & to Geraldine Page in the latter. Those performances shook the very foundations of the craft of acting & the art of impersonation.

Very sad. I am not sure I've even SEEN any of his movies but I always buy Newman's Own products. They're delicious and the proceeds to to his wonderful charities. A friend's daughter went to his camp, she was very ill needing a double lung transplant soon, and it was a wonderful experience for her. She even got to meet him and get a photo with him. Anyone who reaches out to sick children is an . Rest in peace, Mr. Newman.

Some of our most fragile Hollywood legends currently living are Olivia de Havilland, Joan Fontaine, and Luise Rainer. They were working in the 1930's. Any more we can add to the list? Anybody who was working in the 1920's?

Amazing to think he was 83. What always struck me as special about Paul Newman was his long and loving marriage to Joanne Woodward. So rare in Hollywood. He was a wonderful person and actor. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid is a classic.
RIP.

My dad used to work as a Parts Rep. for Nissan Motor Corp. back when Paul Newman was racing Datsuns. H called our house a couple of times to talk to my dad about parts for his cars. My brother spoke to him on the phone once and didn't know it was him until our dad told him afterwards. My dad said he was a really nice guy. Unfortunately my dad died almost 3 years ago from cancer as well.

Even though it was reported he'd been gravely ill for months, the news still came as a shock. :( I have admired him for years. He was a wonderful actor and humanitarian and a remarkable man. RIP, Mr. Newman.

He was such a wonderful actor and person. . :(
Yes, great person. I think he also lived a great life and realized most of his dreams.. God bless him
Paul Newman was from my hometown...
It's very sad to hear this. Not because I was a huge fan of his films, because I won't kid you I never paid them much attention aside from "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "Butch Cassidy," but because he was just a really good guy. He saw beyond the glitz and pretension of fame and Hollywood and led a very normal existence. And he cared enough to do things that weren't self-beneficial and gave something back to humanity. There are so many people out there with big hearts and generous spirits who give a damn, and I count Paul Newman as one of them. He never made any show of it; he was what he was.
And good on him for that life philosophy, his beautiful marriage, and the great things he left for people who loved his movies. He will be remembered very, very highly.
