View Full Version : Poll: Favorite LB Solo Album
Now that Gift of Screws has had some time to sink in, I thought this would be interesting. I don't know, maybe this has been done before.

The real test will be how much we like GOS after a year or so. Will it stand the test of time? Well, aside from the fact that some of the songs are alredy over 10 years old:laugh:!

I agree. I can't right now vote for it for certain for Best Lindsey ever, even though part of me feels that it is. This is a tough call. I voted Law & Order.

For me it was between L&O or GOS.
GI has my favorite ONE song, but the other two are stronger albums as a whole.
Honestly, OOTC is not on heavy roation in my iTunes like the other 3.
I like UTS live, not so much album versions.
Am I really the only one who is feeling the UTS love? That is one of my all time favorite albums!! Why has no one else voted for that? Maybe it is just that that was my first LB experience.

To answer this question would be an impossible task.
Although I could say that I know which one is not my favourite.
OOTH, GOS and UTS are all favourties in their own way. Its a very Mood Dependant question.
So I didnt vote because tomorrow that might not be what I would choose

It's kind of a toss up between Out of the Cradle, UTS and Gift of Screws for me. GOS is too new for me to make that judgement yet. So between OOTC and UTS...OOTC edged out Under the Skin.

Feck it I voted for Screws, I think its Lindseys Best Album.
I wish though he could have put a few more songs on to the cd though.
Got to Get Away, Given Thing and Wear you Down really would have been a great addition to the existing ten songs.

I voted LAW & ODOR. It's always been my favorite owing to its cartoonishness & kazoos. I also think it demonstrates an ebullience in recording (the act itself rather than the technology) that the other albums don't fully have. I also prefer Lindsey's voice at that time -- a hillbilly with immense tonal control.
Finally, L&O has the most interesting cover & sleeve art.

Got to say OOTC. It's the most serious work he's done and you can tell he put the most effort into it. It all works as a cohesive unit the best, besides UTS. GOS is great, he just didn't put as much effort into it as OOTC. The ORIGINAL GOS would have been by far his best, but it was cannibalized.

I'd have to say Out of the Cradle, but GOS comes up very close behind. Under the Skin was also a very good album, but not quite as good as OotC.
Am I really the only one who is feeling the UTS love? That is one of my all time favorite albums!! Why has no one else voted for that? Maybe it is just that that was my first LB experience.
Nope, I love it as well. But OotC is simply my favorite...my favorite album ever, actually. It has some other-worldly quality to it that really lifts me. And I honestly can jog to the whole thing, all the way through- even the gd slow songs for goodness sakes.
But one of my best friends happens to LOVE UTS. I've given her every LB solo album, including GOS and, though she admits that she enjoys many of the songs on them, her favorite still remains to be UTS. She loves the acoustic quality and she thinks his songwriting is extremely strong on it. I think it's strong on all of them...maybe less so L &O but who am I to judge?:o

I feel that UtS is really the first time his lyrics were amazing. Before that, he was okay (still better than most) but he hit a series of homeruns with UtS. I could love OOTC more if it had less of that electronic quality to it. It is a close second to UtS though. I love how sincere the music is of UtS. It is the one CD by anyone that I never get sick of (though I might have to include Quadrophenia here).
I was never crazy about Law and Order. I mean, I like Trouble, It was I is chatchy, and how can you not like That's How We Do It It In LA, but the album as a whole never seemed too amazing. But that is just me. No one who reads this board can claim to have any sort of "normal" musical tastes, we all like Lindsey Buckingham .

This is too tough. GoS is too new for me. Love UtS but I picked what the majority did.

I LOVE UTS. The only song I don't really like on it is I Am Waiting. As for picking my favourite LB album, I can't do it. Too many good songs on each album.

All of Lindsey's solo albums are interesting and rewarding. He is, to my way of thinking, the most artistically successful of all FM artists gone solo. He may not be the most lucrative or commercially viable, but all of his records have moments of genuine power and energy. I was initially disappointed with UTS and still feel it is his weakest effort, but even then it has exceptional moments.
OOC is flawless...
Law and Order runs it a close second, in my book. But I'll have to give GOS a listen.
Go Insane was so underrated.

Don't kick me to hard... I am new to this board...
This is such a hard decision… OOTC was such a breath of fresh air… and some of the songs hit the easy breezy sound that LB is so good at. Soul Drifter is a dream… and only days floating in a boat off the Florida Keys could compare…and it has.... and the guitar open to/and Don’t Look Down… yikes! OOTC WAS the quintessential 90’s breezy sound that he had defined for the 70’s .
It’s always the feeling he does in a song that makes the song so right. And that is what he does. I could care less about the “production” or if a metro dome ( is that what it is??? The rum is getting to me now) was used… it’s what the sound evokes!
And here comes the 2000’s with UTS… Oh my… regardless of what songs made it to which album, albeit FM or solo, they found their way when they needed to be heard. I found UTS to be the most intense, personal album – be it the lyrics or the sparse instrumentation-- or the video on the DVD – and by the way, if you didn’t look down or pull to sheet over your head out of shear compassion or sickened by the current state of the record industry or on some of the latter scenes of him talking on the phone about WHO would actually distribute to album, you’re nuts…. Well… I thought that whole documentary WAS part of the actual album… UTS was cohesive and brilliant… and showed WHO LB is/ was/ is … as should any work of art should. It is whole.
Then there is GOS…. So many songs that I absolutely love! Twist of Fate – sorry, Right Place to Fade, is just too cool… And Great Day will always remain a fabulous memory – ( side note: I got a confirmation on my first Obama gig, literally seconds before I popped in my GOS CD and Great Day blasted out of my car speakers. It was a great day!)
Anyhoo… Of course there is always “a line" and "thought cohesiveness ” that runs thru an LB album – the esoteric meaning always catches my ear, lyrically or otherwise, GOS has some… but not as much as UTS….
So the disagreement of catchy tunes that tap your toe with a grain a linear thought….. or…… the artist’s cohesive vision of pouring out their soul thru lyric and sound…… hmmmmmmmm…. He did say, ”Follow the sound”
Decisions, decisions……
But as the ole’ American Bandstand’s collective tally was… “ It had a good beat and…..”
Oooppsss… time for a refill…:woohoo:

GoS is my favourite, even though it's a little on the short side. I can hear the best of his other albums in it -- Time Precious Time could have come from Under The Skin, Gift of Screws is a bit Go Insane and songs like Underground represent OOTC. (I can't comment on Law and Order since I don't actually own it :o) It's just brilliance from beginning to end, there isn't one track I'd skip.

For me, GOS wins out over OOTC by quite a stretch, because it's much more consistent, has more strong songs per total album length.

Seriously, why does everyone seem to love Out of the Cradle so much? It was one thing when all we had were two "uneven" unpolished experimental albums and OOTC, but now we have two additional albums that also *far* outpace that dated POS. I mean, are there people out there that actually think, for example, that "This Is The Time" is a better song than "Wait For You"?

Perhaps not, but I think it's hard to find better a better song than Wrong, You Do or You Don't or the other stellar songs on that album.
Right now, I am feeling GOS more, but that is probably because it is new. I feel OOTC is rather timeless.

Probably Out Of The Cradle. But I always thought Go Insane was rather wonderful.
I think Gift Of Screws has some of his best individual songs. It doesn't hang together as an album as well as Out Of The Cradle though. Or even Under The Skin.

Law and Order is experimental and silly at times.
Go Insane is personal and emotional. Sad/lonely.
Out of the Cradle is whole and satisfying
Under the Skin is mature and complete and the words express deep felt emotion
Gift is Screws feels incomplete (would have liked to hear a few more songs) but thoughtful. It ends too soon, just as you are really getting in to it.
OOTC/UTS are a tie for me.

GOS. The key to good music for me is actual musicianship, and I feel that the songs on GOS exhibit more and better musicianship than most of Lindsey's other material.

Well, I'll just list mine in order here:
Joint 4th: Under the Skin and Law and Order.
For me, these Lindsey albums just don't have the same replay value as the others do. I listened to L&O repetitively like I did to all his albums when I first got them, but now I kind of find it a bit grating. UtS, was a slightly unexpected album, I come back to it for some of the amazing guitar playing moreso than the actual songs, if anybody else can relate to that.
3rd: Go Insane. Love every song on this album, this is the one album of his where I have to listen to it through from start to finish each time I put it on, and I've never lost interest in doing so yet.
2nd: OotC. Favourite until GoS, no need to explain anything here.
1st: GoS. My favourite memory of this was actually when I gave a friend of mine a listen of LRD on the bus one day. He nearly cried when he heard it  He was so overcome that Lindsey "still had it". But yeah, it's just a rocking album, can't really explain why I prefer it to OotC. Just floats my boat a bit better I suppose :blob2:

Out of the Cradle is a masterpiece.
But Gift of Screws came out the day of Lindsey's concert in San Diego.
That was a special moment for me, because of the people that I spent it with.
So, those two are my fav's.

I would say GOS, but in my mind I look at UTS and GOS as two parts of a double album. Like what the Foo Fighters did with In Your Honor
GOS is the more main line electric one and UTS the acoustic/experimental.
I always thought that if Lindsey could have done what he wanted to, he would have released them together as one large project.
The track order might have been different though. :)

I like all his albums. But GoS was the first one in which he didn't feel like he was "experimenting." It seemed like he had fully inhabited his rock style and was just going for it. The laughter in the title song says it all. He was always too calculated and/or restrained to do that sort of thing before. I love that maniacal laughter.

I bought "Out Of The Cradle" when I was at a very low emotional point in my life and I have to say that it (along with other music, good friends and deep faith in God) helped bring me out of it.
I used to listen to that album over and over again. For me, it had/has a very uplifting spirit in it. It sends a message that things have been bad, but there is something better out there. "This Is The Time" is one of those songs, "Soul Drifter" is another, "Countdown" is yet another.
So, yes, I do love "OOTC" and I really, really mean it. It is outstanding.
My humble opinion.

I like Out Of The Cradle a lot, but Gift Of Screws is my favorite. OOTC seems rather dated - it has a certain early 90's sound.. But it's still a terrific album.
Since I've discovered Lindsey's wonderful solo work, I've noticed that he doesn't fail to deliver with his vocals. Of course he's always brilliant musically..but I feel like people overlook his voice.
There are a lot of nice moments of glory in Gift Of Screws - Bel Air Rain, Did You Miss Me, Wait For You, Right Place To Fade..
I almost wish a lot of these songs had made it to a Fleetwood Mac album because so much of Gift Of Screws sounds Fleetwood Mac-like to me..but then, GOS wouldn't be as great.

For me it's Out Of The Cradle and it isn't even close. I can't believe how many votes Gift Of Screws is getting. Listen to Out Of The Cradle next to that album, folks. Street Of Dreams carries an emotional power absent from anything on Gift Of Screws. It was a heavy time for Lindsey and he really managed to channel that emotional pain and power onto tape.
Street Of Dreams, Soul Drifter, Surrender The Rain... lyrical masterworks
Countdown... pop masterpiece (with some nice lyrics of its own, i.e. "how the madness fades")

I'm personally amazed at how little attention Go Insane is getting on this thread! It is seriously awesome (and the one I voted for)!
I've just been listening to Go Insane and Law and Order, and am currently listening to Out of the Cradle (which I finally bought three days ago). They're all great albums, simply because Lindsey got so creative for all of them!
It'll come as a surprise, but I put off buying OotC as I'm mostly a fan of 50s-80s, and I didn't expect Lindsey to still be as creative as ever. As soon as I heard Don't Look Down I realised how wrong I was! To think that all that time I spent deciding whether or not I should buy it ('twas slightly expensive) I could've been listening to it! The shame!

It's really hard to chose, because for me, they all offer something totally different:
Go Insane is fabulous for it's far out in left field zaniness :D. I can put this album on if I'm really frustrated, and by the time it rolls around to DW Suite I'm thoroughly grinning and happy to be alive again . I just love this one for it's sonic experimentation, and lighthearted nature.
Out Of The Cradle is the soul searching masterpiece album that I put on when I really need to "feel" something, if that makes sense. It's a wonderful album to put on when I'm on solitary road trips, definitely cleanses me. The instrumental intros and sort of operatic nature of this one are just fantastic. Definitely Lindsey's deepest and most powerful effort to date.
To me, Gift Of Screws is about the perfect quintessential rock album. It is paced perfectly, remains chugging in nature despite ubiquitous slower songs, and it just about the ideal length overall for what it is. There's nothing on there that shouldn't be, and nothing has really been left off. I think it's the perfect culmination of a 35 year pop rock career.
If I had to chose one at this moment, I'd probably say Gift Of Screws. But that's subject to change at any time :p.

I have 4 of his solo records, still haven't bought Go Insane. I keep meanong to but then something else comes up that I have to spend money on. I love the title track from that album in whatever form he plays it so when I finally get the album I'll be really excited to hear the whole thing!
At the moment I'm listening to Out of the Cradle and Gift of Screws a lot. Love them both and can't choose. Under The Skin is great, really chilled and relaxing. Law and Order is ok but not brilliant but hey, it's a first solo album.
As for a favourite, at the moment I think I'd have to go for Gift of Screws.

I still haven't voted on this because when the thread was first made I could have voted for now any album except L&O as my favourite. At the time I didn't think there was anything wrong with L&O but it just wasn't as good for me as the other four.
A month ago I went back to L&O and now instead of being unable to pick between four of the albums I can't pick between five of them! :o
I lean slightly more toward GI or GOS at the minute but not enough to even commit myself to making a choice on something as important as an internet poll. :p

I would say GOS is definitely my favorite right now, but it's not really fair to the other albums, since I haven't lived with it as long. When it's as old as OOTC will I still love it as much? That will be the test.
Also, I implore UTS not to feel too sad or downhearted about it's poor showing in this poll. Yes, I've moved on, but the memories remain strong. I loved it deeply just 3 years ago and I still say Show You How is one of Lindsey's top 5 songs of all time.

Yeah, that's kinda the crux for me too. Right now I like GOS because it seems to be the perfect combination of all his albums: rock, experimentation, pop, and acoustic, all tied into one tidy, concise little package. Then again, I felt Stevie's Trouble In Shangri La was her best effort when it came out, but after 8 years of wear, I'm not as thrilled with it. I guess time will tell! :D
