NEW YORK — Former President Bill Clinton said Monday he understands why Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is popular in the American heartland: because people relate to her.

“I come from Arkansas, I get why she’s hot out there, why she’s doing well,” said Clinton, who supports the Democratic ticket headed by Barack Obama.

Speaking to reporters before his Clinton Global Initiative meeting, the former president described Palin’s appeal by adding, “People look at her, and they say, ‘All those kids. Something that happens in everybody’s family. I’m glad she loves her daughter and she’s not ashamed of her. Glad that girl’s going around with her boyfriend. Glad they’re going to get married.”‘

Clinton said voters would think, “I like that little Down syndrome kid. One of them lives down the street. They’re wonderful children. They’re wonderful people. And I like the idea that this guy does those long-distance races. Stayed in the race for 500 miles with a broken arm. My kind of guy.”

Palin, the governor of Alaska, became an overnight star when Republican presidential candidate John McCain tapped her for his running mate. Her family, including her Down syndrome baby, Trig, her pregnant 17-year-old daughter, Bristol, and her husband, Todd, four-time winner of the 2,000-mile Iron Dog snowmobile race, have garnered intense media interest.

“I get this,” Clinton said. “My view is … why say, ever, anything bad about a person? Why don’t we like them and celebrate them and be happy for her elevation to the ticket? And just say that she was a good choice for him and we disagree with them?”

The global initiative, a project of Clinton’s foundation, will hold its four-day annual meeting in Manhattan starting Tuesday.

After that, Clinton said he will be busy campaigning for Obama.

I do not think Clinton said he liked her peronally. Rather, I think his point is Palin's connection to the ordinary person makes her likeable and that makes her a wise choice for the McCain campaign. I think his broader (no pun intended  ) point is that all the BS rhetoric and name calling on both sides does no one any good in the end. He thinks they should be talking about their position on the issues instead.

Note - he is full of cr*p in that no politician I have ever seen can talk about the issues with smearing the opponent by lying and distortin their record, etc. Moreover, neither can lay people. Just look around here for proof of that

Would his position be great in a perfect world - yes, it would. Sadly, the average American is interested and has always been interested in the kissing babies kind of thing. So, they play to what sells. Note - that Rove said this as well (in the similar but more expansive cnn article below) is laughable as he took smearing to a new level, just ask John McCain

Bill Clinton says Dems shouldn't attack Palin

(CNN) — Bill Clinton said Monday the Democratic ticket should steer clear of launching personal attacks on Sarah Palin over her relatively thin resume, and instead acknowledge she was a "good choice" for the No. 2 spot on the GOP ticket.

"Why say, ever, anything bad about a person? Why don't we like them and celebrate them and be happy for her elevation to the ticket? And just say that she was a good choice for him and we disagree with them?" said Clinton, who faced repeated charges during the primary season he was overly negative toward Obama on the campaign trail.

Clinton's comments appear to echo advice Karl Rove gave to Barack Obama in his regular Wall Street Journal column last week, when the former Bush strategist noted attacking the VP candidate has rarely proven to be an effective strategy.

In one of the former president's few extended comments to date on Palin's surprise VP candidacy, Clinton also told reporters in New York Monday he knows why the Alaska governor is attracting massive crowds on the campaign trail.

"I come from Arkansas, I get why she's hot out there," Clinton told reporters in New York, according to the Associated Press. "Why she's doing well."

"People look at her, and they say, 'All those kids. Something that happens in everybody's family I'm glad she loves her daughter and she's not ashamed of her. Glad that girl's going around with her boyfriend. Glad they're going to get married,'" he said.

Referencing Palin's 5-month old child who has Down Syndrome, Clinton also said voters will think, "I like that little Down syndrome kid — one of them lives down the street, they're wonderful children.”

Earlier Monday, Clinton suggested his wife, Sen. Hillary Clinton, would have been a better political choice for the Democratic VP spot than Joe Biden.

“She would have been the best politically, at least in the short run, because of her enormous support of the country,“ he said on the daytime talk show The View.

that, other than his little sexual escapades, Bill Clinton is a class act. He is not one to get down in the gutters and dog other candidates out, etc. I really dont remember him doing that too much during his presidential campaigns either. I agree with him...the focus should be on what the candidate stands for...not the candidate's personal life. However, sometimes those things do reflect each other. I guess more than sometimes. Palin's personal life is the direct opposite of what she claims to believe in. I hear now that she had an affair on her husband with his business partner a few years ago. To me, she was just put on this ticket because she was a woman...plain and simple. She will bring down McCain single handedly and that is all a good Democrat can ask for...lol.

I do not think Clinton said he liked her peronally.

Exactly. It would be poor form and a bad pr move for him to trash her in any way. She can fail all on her own and he knows that.

 Some of us were asleep.
Edited to add: I didn't see Clinton's comments on this until I saw a clip of Larry King last night.

You must have gotten that affair story from The Onion. If it were actually true, the mainstream media would have been all over it. They haven't been.

Seems a bit overboard to call her names, don't you think? I think this is a left thing almost exclusively. As much as I dislike Obama, I think he genuinely loves his country and is trying to do what he thinks is right, even if he has to flip flop all the time and be disingenuous to do it. The left doesn't seem to allow that the right actually might have good intentions.

It's be a GREAT thing to have a TV station devoted to nothing but alternating sermons from Obama's church and Palin's church and let America decide which one is more radical. Yes, Pentacostals are out there. However, I don't think they're destructive and they are generally positive people. I saw nothing but negativity coming out of Flueger and Wright. I mean, if Wright was so positive and inspiring, why aren't people posting his "great and uplifting" sermons on their own on Youtube? He tapes them, after all.
