http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIL1ougLsqcI found this song on youtube. Has anyone ever heard it? It's an unreleased demo from TISL, called "Space Needle"

Ivory Keys says just this:
The first copyright for “Space Needle” is from February 11, 1997, with an indicator that Stevie wrote the song in 1996. Several new songs were submitted for copyright on that date, as well as older songs that were newly re-recorded (“Goodbye Baby”, “Blue Water”, and “The Charmed Ones (The City Of Hope Song)”.

It's a great song and I love it...but I think it suffers from being too long. This is a good example of Stevie needing to "self edit" but obviously she's not going to because she's...well...Stevie.

Even if she dropped one verse and a couple of choruses (ESPECIALLY the REPEATING choruses at the end), it would still be long, but at least it would work better. I find myself singing along to this one all the time but by the time the 5 minute mark comes and another verse starts, I get bored and skip to the next song. JMO.

The online fan community has long surmised that Space Needle was about Stevie's stint in rehab for Klonopin in the 1990s. The song is about going through chemical dependence withdrawal and the cast of characters she encountered during the experience. For instance: "The tar people are back again. Sad, very true" is likely a reference to black tar heroin addicts who relapsed during their recovery phase, and were admitted back into rehab. "Through the long hard summer, I remember feeling cold in the heat" is most certainly a reference to the chills one experiences during chemical withdrawals. Space Needle is definitely a powerful work, and it's a shame it never saw the light of day. Unfortunately I don't hold any hope this song will ever be released, though.

You're so right about that. But I take account in that this is a demo. If she ever considered releasing in on an album (another Nashville outing?!) , I'd hope reasonable heads will prevail, and the song would get concisely rearranged and edited. It does get tedious, but it deserves to be released. A verse or two could be cut, as well as a few choruses.

i HOPE to the chiffon god this demo makes Songs From the Vault 2
it's one of my top 5
it's dark and sad and brilliant ... and def WAY too long
if it could be condensed without losing all the best bits of the song ...
get rid of the whole middle bit and it would be nicer

One day comes
And then it goes
It’s all the same to me, now
Another day here is like another day closer to
Getting out of this town
One thing I said I would never do
Was come from a place of fear
Fear is nothing
Nothing to me now
I no longer care
Fear is nothing to me now
I no longer care
Beautiful faces
Not so beautiful anymore
When it began I was standing at the crossroads
That was then
This is now :nod::nod::nod:

Didn't really happen, IMHO, on 24karat or on IYD where, in both cases, Dave Stewart let her make things as long and repetitive as she wanted.

Those repeating choruses at the end have been the downfall of many of her songs produced by Dave. Clearly he doesn't see the need/ have the fortitude to tell her a song is too long and sabotaging itself by being too long.

Lindsey, of course, had no such qualms, and *mostly* (though not always) it made her songs better. If only he'd learned diplomacy a lot sooner, we'd all be benefitting. :sorry:

I also love this song but I disagree with most of you. :) I love all the lyrics in the verses and think that they are pretty vital to the overall feeling of devastation in this song. I'm not as fond of the chorus though. I don't think it's very melodic. Maybe they could cut the number of times that it is sung? Anyway, I always have mixed feelings about wanting demos to get released. The quality of the version I have is very high, and I kind of like it that only true fans know this song, though maybe the same could be said about anyone buying her Songs from the Vault, which is too bad since it's so dang good. :)

You are so right! For me, the song that comes to mind for winning 'The Most Repetitively Annoying Award is "Lady."

For decades the demo circulated around as "Knocking on Doors". It's hard to know if that was her original title; a collector may have assumed that was the title. It certainly seems more expected and obvious than the less appealing "Lady."

It's a nice song, but it suffers from too many repetitions, and just drags on way too long. And the time keeps going on by and I wonder when this song will end.

Annabelle Lee is a bit of an endurance run too.

You have great instincts! This is the exact same the passage I thought would be appropriate to edit out, and wouldn't be missed.

:laugh:Perhaps, but it's a much more pleasant, upbeat song, unlike the drone of Lady.

You May Be The One is also one of her longer songs that could be paired down. But I love it the way it is.

Don't be sorry - you're right.I think this is why she went on and on about how wonderful an experience it was to work with Dave, because he LET her go on and on....I really don't like Bucky myself and he is a real thorn in Stevie's side but he's a thorn that keeps her on her toes IMO.

Love this!

And I stop the song after the first repeat of the first verse...before we get tortured by the first of multiple repeats of "And the time keeps going...." There's a nice pause there where you *think* it will end, and where it *should* end. So I put it out of its misery and end it there.

LOL. When we had 45s, maybe the single would have ended there.
