View Full Version : MTV's VMAs - I'm officially old

I guess this means I'm officially old, because I can't believe how atrocious every musical performance has been. Even Pink seemed more concerned about stuntwork and explosions than what her vocals (strained) sounded like.
Rihanna was dreadful.
Jonas Brothers - Hanson 2.0 without the hooks.
T.I. - garbage.
Katy Perry was augmented by overdubs and still managed to sound like crap.

I just love Russell Brand, though! I have no idea who he is, but I loved his rant about how we should, 'for the love of god,' vote for Obama :D
I don't like very much of modern music either, but I watch the VMA's anyway because it's tradition and fun.

Most "new" music does tend to be a bit boring.. at least to my ears.
And Russell "dress up like Osama Bin Laden the day after 9/11" Brand, the host, was sure a hoot!

OMG! I was about to post this topic! The whole show sucked major ass! More like the "Crack Head Awards"! The performances were dull and what was up with Christina Aguilera lip synching and that outfit! hahaha!
And then Jordan Sparks came out and said how the people who wore promise rings didn't want to be sluts.
The host looked like he was from another planet.

That's part of the reason I never watch these things. It can never be just about the music anymore. I've wondered why we all have to be so socially conscious about everything? I thought music was supposed to be a diversion from everyday problems. Shows like this leaves people with little to no escape from work and politics. I like what Matchbox Twenty says before shows where they say to forget about what's going on outside these doors and to just listen to the music.

Same here! Same age and I don't have much of an interest in any of it. I think most good music stopped around 1999. I don't like the hip-hop era or the over-commercialization of music today. It seems stuff happened in the 90's, 60's and 70's that would never happen today. If something like "Bittersweet Symphony" or "Classical Gas" were released today, neither would never have gotten past the college station circuit.

I thought the Britney/Jonah Hill thing was kindof wierd, but I was glad to see Brit win a couple of awards. [That thing with the mic though...wtf?]
I like the Jonas Brothers. I admit. I thought they did ok at the VMAs. I just find it hilarious that little 10-12 year old girls try to be sexy for them, when its not like the guys will even have sex with them in the first place...
IMO Russell Brand should have kept his fcking mouth shut about the politics. 1st off, it is a MUSIC AWARDS. [VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS], so why mention politics instead of something that has to do with the show/people at the show. and 2nd, not everyone likes Obama, yes there are racist people in America, and its not like one person voting matters anyways. The POTUSA is picked by the Electoral College, which is a group of elite members of each state. The popular vote means nothing and even if Obama did win Pop vote, if McCain wins Electoral vote he gets in. simple as that. And I doubt that the EC watches the VMAs. [And for that last rant alone is why I'm not registering to vote when I turn 18. Thank you APUSHistory for that :)]

Hey Christine..
I can't say I blame you in the least. It's SOOO sad how everything is "geared" toward politics, where it shouldn't, IMO.. And as someone else mentioned, why can't a 'Music Awards show" be just that? It's really sad that people who turn 18, and who can legally be registered to vote don't want to, and I SOOO see and feel your frustrations. I remembered when I turned 18 (i think-- lol) :p I was SOOOO excited as I couldn't wait to go and actually register to vote! Can't even remember who I voted for back then in 76'- but all I know is, that's when times were SOO simple, and the people running for President back then, were actually "President worthy" on both sides.. LOL.. Again IMO..

Well to be fair, politics and social issues have always been a part of popular music. Back to Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie and the blues. Even further back with classical music. It's not exactly a new thing to combine the two.

The thing about music and politics is that what you are saying is that the music itself was about politics, which is all well and fine, but turning an awards show into a political event is different. BTW I am a huge fan of some of the musicians that are also political, like the Smothers Brothers. Their show made no bones about being political and I thought it was great, because it wasn't supposed to be anything else or impartial in any way. An awards show is supposed to be about the musicians being honored. I mean, if Neil Young wins an award for his work on FarmAid and he says something during his acceptance about US farm policy, that's also okay because that is what he won an award for. What is supposed to be an impartial host giving unsolicited opinions is another. BTW another little known fact about Mason Williams is that he was the first guy to book Pete Seeger on a TV show after he was blacklisted.

The Jonas Brothers weird me out live, but their music is pretty catchy. I oddly like their first album the best (the one that tanked when originally released) and I really can't stand most of anything Joe sings lead on but the dudes know how to write pop music. As a Hanson fan though, I must throw in that they have a ways to go to be as good as Hanson was and continues to be. If they're making albums as good as Hanson's most recent in the next few years, I'll happily be buying.

I'm sorry, I am just not a Britney Spears fan anymore.
I thought the opening skit thing was very unfunny, her 'intro' was terrible (Especially since she held that mike right in front of her face. C'mon, she knows better then that!), and I feel like her awards were, to be frank, out of pity. Video of the year? Really. Really? I truly think she wouldn't have gotten that award if people didn't want her to have a huge 'comeback'. The song itself is just machinery, she sings one note over and over again, and in the video all she does is hold her arms up and sway back and forth. What a joke.

To me, for Brit winning any awards here lately seem like steps in the right direction, you know? Not too long ago we were watching her flake out and going to the hospital on some stretcher, so from that point "A" to last night's point "B" I think that's what I consider a pretty good come back..IMO

annother midtwentees frustrated with music here:laugh::wavey:
Nice to know theres so manny of us here on the ledge. k, so My Biggest complaint, and largest annoyance. the show was soooooo totally "unprofessional" were was the mike for Demi Moore? she actually had to ask for a mike. Jamie Fox coming in waaaaaaay before que going "are we ready" and lookin around:lol: I dont know, the whole thing was just SLOPPY.
ALSO? fall out boy's vid singing... "beat it"? Katy perry singing "like a vergin"? kid rocks new song? a shameless rip off of warren zeverons warewolves of london!
I remember when people used to have "ideas". Not rehash. Christinas new mix of jeannie in a bottl was a cool one, but common, jeannie in a bottle, what is this 98?
I LOVE "Superstar" by lupe Fiasco, and they cut off him and that other guy who was singing to advertize for TACO FREEKIN BELL!!
THEN!!!! Cut to a comercial of Chris Brown selling a new flavor of gum.
THat weirdo host cutt off that guy from Twilights intro. and IM SOOO freeking sick of Lil Wayne, and that other guy it was like watching two guys in their living room on youtube. only thinking good lord, THESE two are MILLIONARES.
THe positives..
Pink was pretty cool, so was Rhianna, only her preformance was short. THE Jonas brothers handled themselves with class. they really did. and good for Jordan Sparks too. ALSO!! (last one i promise:lol:) Brittney Spears did nothing wierd or cooky, and uttered compleete sentences and was the most normal ive ever seen her. good for her.

Yeah, I just don't think that politics really have a place 100% of the time. I like that some SONGS have political messages [Like in the 1960s and 70s], but now? Most people write about sex [or in the JoBros case, not having it], Love, Money, or Drugs [from Alcohol to any illegal]. I wouldn't have cared if someone like Kanye West came out with a rap to endorse Obama or McCain, but Just the fact that Brand [someone who's from Britain...and as far as I know not a US citizen] had to go out of his way to say 'elect Obama' while reading his monoluge for a music show just bugged me.
I still though stand by my point as one vote doesn't count, it doesn't matter in anyway. Therefore I refuse to vote until something is done about the way the president is elected. [They aren't even inagurated until Jan, so if in Nov they do pop vote and it takes 3 weeks or whatever to get the final count, then what the hell? then its what the country wants, not the EC].
Besides that I want someone who agrees with me on all my issue standpoints...yet I am wayy more republican than Demo, except on abortion.
Phoenix, thank you for saying wtf about Lil Wayne...I can't believe that someone who wears his pants so low makes so much money...plus it bugs me that kids at my school think hes 'fyne' [quote from like 10 kids myspaces that go to my school].
I really truthfully LOVE the Jonas Brothers. I used to be ashamed to admit this, but not so much. I was 5 when the Hanson thing came out, and I didn't like them very much, but the JoBros are like the OP said, Hanson 2.0, but IMO with better songs. I listen to 'Burnin Up' like every day. It is seriously my favorite song of the year. [and should have beat Brit in the best video of the year catagory]. I hate Joe with a fiery passion. I hate how the girls think he's cute, he's not. He thinks he's the leader of the group, and it's actually Nick. I like Kevin the best though. I think he's the best looking [plus he always has the guitar *sigh*...I have a thing for guitar players...yeah...], and he stays out of the spotlight unlike his two attention hungry brothers. Plus Kevin is the only one who isn't dating some high prof teen idol. [Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez]. I am seriously going to check them out the next time they tour around MA. [I can like the music but not the people :P]
I skipped out before Miley Cyrus. I think she's a little skank. [My mom and I make fun of her sooo much...]
I wish I would have saw Brit win her other two awards though. I loved her when I was 8, and I love her now, 8 years later. :)

The problem with the Clinton economy is that it was largely based on Real Estate and Technology, which either has crashed or is crashing currently. It should not reflect on Clinton. The president has very little to do with the economy at all, other than setting tax policy.

That's taking it a little further than I meant it, it was just a very easy example. My point is that the Axis Powers liked Chamberlain because he was hesitant to use force and he was easy to push around. I think Putin, Ahmadinijad, Hugo Chavez or anyone else would prefer Obama because they could get away with just about anything and he'd be more than willing to run to the negotiating table and he probably would never use force. Obama doesn't have the same kind of "My country is best" attitude that McCain does, which is something I like about McCain. Obama would prefer that the US not be the superpower that it has been and would probably end up joining the US to the EU, whereas McCain wouldn't do something like that. That's my point.
I've explained it well enough and I've had enough discussions with you to know that if you want to take it further, you're probably just being bellicose. :)
I do have a question though, which is WHY exactly do you want Obama to be president? What is it exactly that you think he'll do and why do you think he's in any way shape or form qualified, or what in his record is attractive? I mean, is it just the fact that he isn't Bush that makes you like him? In all due respect, he's really done very little except run for office his entire career. He seems like a nice enough guy, I just don't think he's quite ready. Give him another 4-8 years in the senate and he may be a very good president then, he just seems basically ignorant of some very important issues like military strategy, political history and economics. I just don't know what his appeal is to Europe. Maybe he can run for president over there. LOL!

Well, I am kinda toying you. But yes, a big part of it is to do with the fact he's not Bush and McCain looks like he would be more of the same. The American election is being covered heavily in the press here, probably more than a UK election would in the US.
But back to more important matters: the Jonas brothers. Their perfect eyebrows and girly hair kind of scares me - they almost look like anime characters.

Just bear in mind that there is no such thing as a neutral press. As far as similarities go, they are both members of the same party, but I don't see much of a resemblance on major issues otherwise. Bush is much more of a centralized government fan (examples are the "No Child Left Behind Act" etc), McCain is what is called a "Federalist" where he'd rather see the states control most issues and the federal government doesn't decide matters of social policy. A lot of it ends up being misunderstood because the press doesn't understand the political philosophy of the federalists, so they say a bunch of stuff like "McCain wants to outlaw abortion" because McCain has said Roe V. Wade was bad law, when repealing Roe V. Wade doesn't make abortion illegal, it throws it back to the states to decide how to govern abortion. So, the press ends up needlessly frightening people out of basic ignorance. Basically, the press is skin deep and doesn't understand anything that doesn't fit on a bumper sticker. The foreign press is even worse most of the time. I regularly have European friends that send me news articles and they frequently refers to things like "American State-Controlled Press newspaper The Washington Post" and there aren't any state run media outlets, that's also despite the fact that the Post brought down Richard Nixon. So, it is obviously not state run.
