LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former "One Day at Time" television star Mackenzie Phillips was arrested on Wednesday morning at Los Angeles International Airport on suspicion of drug possession, police said.

Police arrested Phillips, the daughter of The Mamas & the Papas lead singer John Phillips, after she went through airport security screening.

"Following a secondary screening, she was found to be in possession of what appeared to be cocaine and heroin," said Sgt. Jim Holcomb of Los Angeles Airport Police.

Phillips possessed a "small amount" of drugs packaged in balloons and plastic bags, according to Holcomb.

She was immediately transported to the airport police station and later to the Los Angeles Police Department jail in Van Nuys, California. Phillips' bail was set at $10,000.

Phillips, 48, starred as Julie Romano in the CBS comedy "One Day at a Time" that ran from 1975 to 1984. She battled drug addiction during her time on the sitcom and was later fired from the show because of her drug abuse even after undergoing drug rehabilitation.

More recently, Phillips starred as a rock star mom in the Disney Channel series "So Weird."

Sad to see she's still struggling with her addictions.

That is sad.

I hope she doesn't get prison time (as long as it was for her own use).
There has to be a better answer for drug addiction than prison don't
you think?

Truly. I was disheartened to hear that she's fallen off. I hope she gets well.

I do, but this country hasn't been socially progressive enough with this issue to deal with it.

me too. Years ago I watched an ETH special of her, and she was supposedly clean. But this sickness is very hard to get rid of. Same happened with Dana Plato, ended tragically with her death. Hope Mackenzie can be clean some day for good.

My stomach just turned, I had no idea. Recover is a lifelong process/battle. Addicts are never cured and this just underscores that fact, as sad as it is. Steven Tyler recently relapsed, he'd been on painkillers for his hip replacement which led to him abusing them. Tatum O'Neil also was arrested on drug charges a few months ago. Steven went into rehab and has probably left by now. I hope the other two can get back into recovery.

But Stevie Nicks is still clean, as Elton John is, and Anthony Hopkins, and I hope also Mick Fleetwood. Many people could control their addiction, cause I agree there is no definitive cure, but at least they kind of made it !

However Mackenzie, Andy Gibb, Whitney Houston, David Ruffin, Boy George didn't clean themselves. Some of them already passed away. Is it genetic? Some experts say it is a genetic thing, others say that they don't stop drugs cause they don't want to.

Most all addicts relapse; it's actually part of the recovery process. Because the unfortunate folks you mentioned didn't make it doesn't mean that they didn't get clean. It usually means that their relapse killed them. All it takes is one time and one never knows when that time will be. I think it's very important not to be judgmental when discussing recovery. There is most certainly a genetic component to addiction, however like most other diseases it is not definitive.

Some might say that Stevie's addiction to Klonopin a relapse. She traded one addiction for another.

Some might say that Stevie's addiction to Klonopin a relapse. She traded one addiction for another.Hers is a troubled soul, an anxiety-ridden soul. Consider the way she tours every year. She is troubled in her life at home, & she wants to live out of a suitcase & to constantly move from hotel to hotel.

We see it in her life. We see it in her songs. We see it in her actions. She is a spirit in torment. :distress:

I'm not sure how true that is anymore. I think she's made peace with herself and her choices. She finally got herself into therapy. And recently admitted getting hooked on cocaine was a mistake. She was hugely in denial about that saying she had absolutely no regrets about her life. I think maybe therapy is helping her. Who knows. I do agree that she lives with a lot of anxiety, hence playing it safe with song choices, being excessively meticulous and perfectionistic with her released work, etc.

Yes, there's a genetic predisposition for addiction which isn't the cause of it but certainly helps keep the user hooked once they begin abusing substances. I agree about not being judgemental. We all love to think we are completely in control of our behavior. But everyone does compulsive things at times to which they later wonder, "WTF was I thinking?"
