Hurricane Gustav is expected to make landfall today in Haiti before heading toward Cuba and potentially taking aim at states along the U.S. Gulf Coast.

Hurricane Gustav topped Google Hot Trends today with related results (Tropical Storm Gustav, Hurricane Gustav projected path) found throughout the Top 100 most searched terms.

With current maximum sustained winds of 85 mph, Gustav could develop into a Category 2 hurricane later today and a “major” Category 3 or 4 storm by the end of the week, according to AccuWeather forecasters.

Forecasters warned Gustav's eye could pass near the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince, home to nearly 3 million people.

To avoid the storm, Carnival Cruise Lines diverted one of its ships today to a Mexican port instead of Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Crude oil prices rose today as Hurricane Gustav threatened major oil operations in the Gulf of Mexico, home to more than a fifth of U.S. oil production.

How long before the media makes it Bush's fault if it does hit New Orleans? 3 days is my guess.

I think its GOD's fault, He is (supposedly) punishing us AMERICANS for being SUCH sinners...

Personally, I think He is mad because the CUBS are in first and the Yanks & Red Sox may neither not make the playoffs - thus the ALMIGHTY's punishment (That, and maybe if He can get the Saints to cancel a season they wont suck like they do year after year)

I know, I am praying for all of my friends and family in Louisiana and elsewhere on the Gulf Coast. That region is finally coming along fairly well since Katrina. This could be a horrible thing for those people.

I have a feeling that it wont be as bad as Katrina was. If you all will remember, Katrina was a cat 3 I believe 2 or 3 days before landfall and I remember watching the weather channel and thinkking the mofo covered the entire gulf of Mexico. Gustav, at least at this point is a great deal smaller and not even a hurricane at this point.

Mayor Nagin will evacuate NOLA if Gustav heads for land rated above a Cat 2:

Good for him. I hope the people actually listen this time! To be fair, they listened for Rita.

Imagine how disastrous it would be if a tsunami hit at the same time as the storm surge.

Well, they do, though I am unsure of the exact name for it. In other words, what is the difference between a 20 foot tsunami and a 20 foot storm surge. to me, they looked the same in effect when I saw the tsunami that hit off India a few years ago. I suppose one diffference is the tsunami waters recede quickly, carrying out to sea many objects -- while the storm surge just keeps coming in.
