I suppose we should put all the DNC chat in this thread.

Of course I wasn't joking about his illness.

But the "last" of an outstanding generation? Ted Kennedy?

I didn't get to *see* him speak, but the convention was live on NPR so I heard it as I was driving home.

Whoever was speaking used the sea as a metaphor (was it Caroline's speech or the videoclip?)

...about how the water meant a lot to Teddy coming from Massachusetts and teaching the younger Kennedys how to sail, etc., etc.

My mind began to wander -- and remember 1969 -- and how water figured so dramatically in Ted's life.

But the mantra about Teddy being a senator from Mass and being everybody's advocate, brought me back to 2008.

The NPR guys described the scene as everyone in the hall having a Kennedy sign and that it was very moving....the highlight of the night.

When I asked my husband about the signs, he said, he never saw one. (He was watching CNN's coverage.)

Enough of my rambling...here are a couple questions.

1. What was the visual like? The TV coverage of the convention hall...did the delegates seem interested in listening to the speeches, or did they look tired and bored?

2. On the radio, the announcers kept interrupting to talk amongst themselves...which I hated. I wanted to hear the convention, not the radio-know-it-alls....and the topic was if and how the Clintons are gonna upstage Obama and take over the convention. Was anything along those lines mentioned on TV?

BTW... #3. Anybody read Rolling Stone? Here's two interesting articles:
August 21, 2008 Michael Moore "How the Democrats Can Blow it"
Sept. 4, 2008 - How Bush Destroyed the Republican Party by Sean Wilentz

You mean JFK escalating our military and political commitments in Vietnam?
Look how that war ended.

And as far as the other political dynasty, how's the Iraq thing going? Oh yeah,
we are winning no thanks to the Democrats.

1. A blunder on his and his advisors part on the Mission Accomplished.
2. Don't worry about the polls, they change all the time. You can't lead
the country by them like Clinton tried to do.
3. We are not far away from this yet to truly judge whether this is one of

I wish everyone would be a little more careful about putting down the Guard.

. . . And as far as the other political dynasty, how's the Iraq thing going? Oh yeah, we are winning no thanks to the Democrats.

Actually, it seems to me that if people like the D's did not start to balk at W's half a$$ed invasion of Iraq (against all military advice regarding number of troops - thanks a lot Rumsfeld) with absolutely no coherent lan to win the peace, we would not still be there with no end in sight, our blank, signed checks, and our dead and injured soldiers? I get that we are winning because of the surge, but to congratulate W for that is like congratulating someone for saving your arm when they are the reason you lost your hand in the first place. Are we supposed to now just forget the disaster Iraq was before the surge, which was directly caused by W? I suppose:

1. Losing OBL in Afgan.;
2. Lying to force an unnecessary invasion;
3. Thousands US soldiers dead in Iraq.
4. Tens of thousands of US soldiers brutally injured with no adequate medical care;
5. Hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians dead, and;
6. A bankrupt country

are all just forgiven in the end because W finally, for some unknown reason, determined it was time to get serious in Iraq. Do you actually believe that

In the end, don't you find it at the least interesting that W is now apparently going to get the conbat troops out of Iraq in roughly the same timetable as that espoused by Obama and Hillary, which W and his cronies, including McCain, have consistently called the strategy for losing or "they, the D's, want America to fail by setting a timetable for Al-Q to take over." Yet, when W does it with essentially the same plan, it suddenly is a "win" You may buy that rhetoric crapola, but I sure as hell do not. Can you not see that W is using this as a campaign strategy for the R party.

Then again, people actually believed W when he said Iraq's oil would pay for the invasion. That anyone believes anything out of W's mouth amazes me.

strandinthewind
08-26-2008, 09:06 AM
Yes, we are winning. At the highest cost. War is Hell.

The point is we never had to go in the first place. There was no Al-Q presence in Iraq. In fact, they hated each other. To suggest otherwise ignores that facts.

Maybe we are there to kill terrorist

The terrorists who attacked us were not there at all prior to the invasion. Moreover, had W put enough troops there to begin with, Al-Q would not have the alleged foothold it now has there even if we toppled SH, which was a good thing at too expensive a cost when the people that attacked us were and still are running loose.

and yes for the OIL!

and - we were too stupid even to get that now weren't we. Because, if we have it, that's news to me. Why the hell isn't Iraq paying us back for this instead of having huge surpluses when all we have is debt incurred to get Iraq on its feet.

It it wasn't for the Banks & Mortgage Companies loaning money to people who don't qualify for loans, and people just over extending themselves, you wouldn't be hearing about how bad the economy is.

Actually, the economy was in bad shape prior to then.

I blame the Bush Admin. because it knew that was going on (Greenspan continuously warned about it) for years and passed no law to stop it. But, they could not because that phantom wealth was driving the economy since W took office.

But, even if you take that fiasco out of the equati0n, the bottom line is W spent a trillion or so dollar surplus and then borrowed at least that much to pay for Iraq. That tab would has to be paid despite the housing crisis

I get that you are passionate about W, but surely you see these facts

Again, if W were your employee and he bankrupted your business, made most of your customers hate you, and he never succeeded at anything -- would you keep him employed or would you fire him? I think you know the answer to that.

I know. And, if toppling SH and setting upp a govt. were our goals, I suggest we successfully did that a year or two ago.

Again, I think it is interesting now that W says it is time to leave with an established timetable that all but mirrors the timetable the D's have been screaming for, it suddenly is a win

Obama faces twin task in wooing Clinton backers By CHARLES BABINGTON, Associated Press Writer
Tue Aug 26, 3:43 AM ET

DENVER - Meet Cindy Lerner and Leeann Ormsbee, the two faces of Barack Obama's struggle to win over Hillary Rodham Clinton's most fervent supporters — a task that could determine whether he becomes president.

They travel in different social and economic circles: one white-collar and financially safe, one working-class and less secure. They have different educations, backgrounds and reasons for backing Clinton's presidential bid.

But both are self-described Democrats who say they may not vote for Obama this fall. And in that, they personify the complexity and urgency of his efforts to close rifts left by a marathon primary.

The most striking story line of the Democratic convention's first day was the tenacity and emotion of Clinton backers. They unapologetically threatened to disrupt the four-day event's unity theme, demanding that Clinton be honored with a prime-time nominating roll call vote on Wednesday — whether she wants it or not.

In conversations with die-hard Clinton backers, it became increasingly clear that her campaign was at least as much about them as about her. With 10 weeks to go to Obama's showdown with Republican John McCain, they remain loath to turn it loose, even if their doggedness might help the GOP keep the White House.

"I'm not there yet," said Lerner, a Miami lawyer, as she sat with fellow Florida delegates Monday wearing a Clinton button and a frown. "I hope we can use this convention to help Obama's campaign and his administration understand what millions of women in this country live everyday in terms of a lack of respect."

Lerner, 55, cited unequal pay, unfair workplace promotions and a "good ol' boy network that is still alive and well in the corporate world and in the political world."

"Delegates all over the country feel like I do," she said.

Ormsbee, meanwhile, was far away, cleaning houses in Waterford, Ohio. Single, 29, with a high school education, she might have trouble relating to Lerner's anger. Her concerns are mostly pocketbook and kitchen-table affairs, she said.

Clinton won her heart more by promising to fight for the working class than by talking of glass ceilings. But Ormbee's doubts about Obama are no less pressing than Lerner's. And she, too, feels Clinton has been disrespected.

Obama "made a foolish choice" in picking Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate, Ormsbee said in a telephone interview. "He could have been president if he had picked Hillary. How stupid can you be? It seems like he did it to spite her."

In battleground states such as Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Florida, Obama needs to win the vote of every Clinton supporter he possibly can. But he must appeal to them with different themes, to address their varying grievances and fears.

Lerner and many professional women like her saw Clinton's campaign as a chance to redeem their own struggles against sexism and hundreds of slights, large and small, over the years. They want empathy and respect from Obama, and Clinton is their surrogate.

Eleanor Strickland, a Florida delegate and Clinton supporter, has a master's degree in advertising and a successful career behind her. But she remembers a Chicago ad agency directing her to train a man with less education and fewer qualifications to be an account executive.

"There was no thought that a woman could be an account executive," she said.

Hearing that Clinton might not seek a full-blown roll call of her name in nomination, Strickland said: "I think she's being pressured. It's disrespectful. ... I think she was robbed."

She shared a Denver taxi with Florida delegate Catherine Leisek, an art professor and fellow Clinton backer. When Leisek worked at an art institute in 1980, a male co-worker said, "Honey, can you type this?"

No, Leisek had replied, adding that her secretary might.

In Garretsville, Ohio, Susan Carroll also is a Democrat and Clinton backer. But she can't match the college degrees and salaries that Leisek and Strickland have enjoyed. She packages cheese in a factory, and worries about paying bills and obtaining affordable health care.

Carroll, 44, said she is not sure how she will vote in November. "I want to start reading and learning more" about what Obama and McCain are proposing, she said.

While Obama addresses the feminist-related resentments of women like Cindy Lerner, he almost must speak to the economic worries of the Susan Carrolls. Polls show him struggling to attract significant numbers of white Democrats without college educations who supported Clinton in the primaries.

In Denver, Clinton admirer Chris Lomas, 45, has reconciled herself to backing Obama. But she thinks she knows why so many of her sisters have not.

The contest between the two "was so close, and went on so long," said Lomas, a first-year law student and Florida delegate. "People got so emotionally involved."

Obama has 10 weeks to speak to those emotions and, if possible, keep McCain from stealing a crucial number of voters who call themselves Democrats.

Nah - I like McCain as a person. I just do not want the R party in power anymore. I think the idea of a religious state is too repugnant. And, the ironic thing is the far religious right is too stupid to realize the R's are just using them. Let the tide change from religious sectarianism, and the R party will follow the money to the other wherever it goes. They all do that. That is why the idea that McCain will somehow buck the R party on these currently vogue religious ideas is ridiculous. McCain will follow the money, which is the RNC.

I also do not get when people say Obama wants to raise their taxes. All the evidence shows that Obama is raising taxes back to the Clinton levels for those making $200,000 or more a year. Thus, the vast majority of Americans will feel nothing from this tax "increase." Moreover, at the Clinton levels, the nation had a trillion + dollar surplus. So, I just do not see how Obama's tax plan is such a bad thing and I HATE the current income tax system. Again, I am for the Fair Tax because that way every hooker, stipper, waiter, drug dealer, and any other cash based business has to in the end pay tax on their cash transactions.

As for winning in Iraq - do you not see that McCain, W, the R party, and its mouthpieces cried for the last two years and as recently a few weeks ago that any talk of withdrawing the combat troops in Iraq was an admission of defeat, the D's just want America to fail, etc. Now, W is doing just that based on the same set of facts and clearly because the American public is done with this ill thought out and planned war; McCain likely cannot win without W's current withdrawal scheme. Yet, when W does it, America suddenly is winning in Iraq and no one better talk against W or how he alone got us into the disasterous situation in Iraq in the first place. All suddenly is forgiven for W, but all of the D's who dared to raise this issue are traitors and hate America. To me, that is BS and rank hypocrisy, which I have to say the facts support is all the R's have been about since 1996.

Again, if W were your employee, would you have fired him long ago?

Today in Denver:

[Bill Clinton] said: "Suppose you're a voter, and you've got candidate X and candidate Y. Candidate X agrees with you on everything, but you don't think that candidate can deliver on anything at all. Candidate Y you agree with on about half the issues, but he can deliver. Which candidate are you going to vote for?"

Then, perhaps mindful of how his off-the-cuff remarks might be taken, Clinton added after a pause: "This has nothing to do with what's going on now."

I made up my mind when he was appointed President by daddy's supreme court abetted by his brother the Governer of the state in contest! (please)can we say nepotism?I guess I buck the trend as I am not only for a pullout I believe 100% that we should never have gone in.The only way we can "win" is to stay there and occupy that nation interminably and we had a profound lack of understanding of the culture of that region and still do..Iraqi or Iran for that matter is not Germany .Japan or South Korea. And I am not so blindly partisan that I will throw out the baby with the bathwater ..I have maintained all along that I like John McCain as an individual and as misguided as I feel he is about many of his policies I feel he has the best interest of America in his heartI am however very concerned about his running mate given his age and health history ,if he were to win which I hope he does not .As for Bush he is an imbecile ..sorry.

Yeah I think my distaste for him actually predated the election theft of 2000..I remember thinking to myself how did an inarticulate cretin like him beat a great lady like Ann Richards in the Texas gubernatorial election..an early dose of Rovian style smear and nepotism I'd imagine.

Charles Krauthammer said Hilary's speech brought remorse to the Democrats, making them think they've got the wrong candidate for President.

I think her speech was more about her than Obama.

Cant wait til November to see who Oklahoma sides with...A Democrat has yet to win this state in my lifetime (Last being Kennedy) during a presidential election (Which is odd since OK is a Democratic dominated state)

When Clinton was in the ORAL Office the economy (Along with jobs) in this state went 'bye-bye' faster than you can say NAFTA - But the past couple of years Oklahoma has been (According to Forbes magazine) the #1 'recession proof' state to live in.

Oklahomans favored Hill-Billy over Obama by 2-to-1 (Whites and Blacks favor Hill-Billy whereas Indian Tribes favor Obama) so I think Oklahoma may be an interesting state (of confusion) come November since those Hill-Billy fans feel slighted since she is not the VP candidate.

On the good side, At least we can vote without confusion unlike those in Michigan and Flor-i-DUH

I agree with you, David. This is more of a mega-Rotary meeting where they hand out awards for being Rotarians. In any of the speeches, especially Kucinich, I haven't heard anything worth hearing. I laughed so hard I had to pull over at Kucinich saying that the national debt was due to oil companies. Again, when he said that Wall Street was run by speculators. Duh! Wall Street is speculation?! Is he against people saving for retirements, buying homes, buying commodities in the futures markets, earning interest, etc? All of that is "speculation", which is how most people fund their retirements and make money besides from wages. Like most political discourse today, being against "speculators" sounds good to people who don't understand the term and are paralyzed from class envy, but it curbing it would overburden the government in future when people can't save enough for retirement. I mean, statistics show that over 50% of the country is currently invested in a 401(k), which is speculation. Where do these people come from? Then again, this is the guy who claims to see UFOs.

Clinton went on about how her husband presided over 8 years of peace and prosperity. (conveniently not mentioning the run up to 9/11, the first WTC bombing, the numerous attacks on our embassies, the short Iraq war and missile strikes, the war in Bosnia and Kosovo, Haiti, and Somolia. As well as the recession of 2000, the dot-com bust, the lead up to the housing mess, etc. Granted none of that was Clinton's fault, but her description was a mischaracterization of her husband's presidency). I thought one phrase from her speech summed up the entire democratic party platform, "will you please help take care of me?"

No one has really addressed the experience deficit here. I mean, Biden or any other pick has a far superior resume. Seriously, this ticket should be reversed. I could live with Clinton, but I think Obama is dangerous because it seems he actually believes the redistributionist ideas he throws around. Clinton, at least, has been around long enough that she knows she has to compromise.

The reality is, as mentioned earlier, Obama's tax "increase" will not have any effect on anyone making less than $200,000 a year and the proposed "increase" for those making over $200,000 a year pretty much is to take the tax rate back to the Clinton levels, during which the US had a trillion plus dollar surplus, that the R's spent and then borrowed  What utter cr*p as usual from the R party

How do people feel about the delegate voting process being predetermined and orchestrated? Because I'm weird, I thought the Democratic party would support. . . democracy ("count every vote!" that sorta thing in the post-2000 era). I'm just curious how people feel about this. Obviously, Obama will win a proper Delegate count, I'm just surprised that that democratic process (and the process of delegates voting for VP) is being so overtly disregarded (obviously back-room deals probably always decided these things for all I know).

In other words, is the spectacle of Democracy less important than the spectacle of a "unified" Democratic party? Why are they incompatible?

I apologize for not being clear. I was referring to the actual delegate process which is being pre-orchestrated as opposed to a delegate process that is not pre-orchestrated. That's all. GROAN! This is econ 101. Has any poor person ever hired you? Oh yeah, I forgot, you are a public servant who doesn't work in the private sector. If you tax the wealthy, the middle class end up paying for it with less jobs, lower wages and less raises. True! Although, the president, generally speaking, has very little to do with economic performance. He sets the stage to work with, IE taxes, regulation, etc. However, what we do with it is our fault and not his. Clinton did not "create" a great economy, it was happening because of private market innovation and the growth of the tech industry, as well as payoff's from investments from previous years. It started to go bad because some of the growth wasn't legit, IE the dot com bubble and the beginning of the housing bubble. My point is that the economy was going to grow or contract anyway, Clinton's taxes dampened the growth that there already was. It would have been much greater without the taxes, partially because of the money multiplier effect.

I was at a party sponsored by Pepsi for the delegates. It kicked off around 1:00. There weren't a lot of people there. I started talking to a couple of delegates from Washington state who told me Hillary had called a meeting with her delegates for 1 o'clock and that the roll call vote had been moved up. I didn't know until I hit the street that Obama had been nominated. I saw Governor Ritter and Howard Dean's wife, Dr. Judy Steinberg.
I left around 4:30 and the streets were still hopping. There were cops, cops and more cops. There were police escorted motorcades. I have no idea who was in them. Here are some of the folks I ran into along the way:

This guy was calling himself Pope Grope. I'm not sure what his agenda was. With that, I decided to head towards Union Station, where I knew that MSNBC had set up camp. This thing came driving by:

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=DemocraticConvention014.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/DemocraticConvention014.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Union Pacific decided to bring in some vintage trains for the occasion:

And when I walked a little further I saw it:

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=DemocraticConvention015.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/DemocraticConvention015.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

MSNBC

Miss America was there:

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=MissAmerica.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/MissAmerica.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

And so was Chris Matthews! Here he is getting ready to interview Senator Jon Tester of Montana.

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=DemocraticConvention005.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/DemocraticConvention005.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Then this nice lady from Code Pink came along and gave me a "I am a delegate for peace" sticker. Great outfit too.

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=CodePinkgal.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/CodePinkgal.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I hung out and watched Chris Matthews do his interview. Then he came over and talked to us because the lady in front of me kept yelling "We know you vote Republican". He grinned a little and mouthed the words "So what" to her. He walked up to her and jokingly said "You're a loon aren't you?" It was too funny. the he had one of the staff come over and give us all t shirts and hats. I waited to see if I could get a glimpse of Keith Olbermann, who was doing his show on the second story of the that platfrom thingy. It was hot and I was ready to go. So I walked over the pedestrian bridge that crosses the Platte River and I 25 towards home. There I ran into the Renewable Energy Roadshow. Al Gore you are not forgotten:

The city was so full of people that for a minute I felt like I was in New York again. Needless to say, I had a fantastic time. there were a lot of people on bikes so I may ride down tomorrow morning and see what else I can see. Also, everyone was being cool and peaceful. It was a good vibe.

This guy was calling himself Pope Grope. I'm not sure what his agenda was. With that, I decided to head towards Union Station, where I knew that MSNBC had set up camp. This thing came driving by:

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=DemocraticConvention014.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/DemocraticConvention014.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Union Pacific decided to bring in some vintage trains for the occasion:

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=VintageTrains.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/VintageTrains.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

And when I walked a little further I saw it:

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=DemocraticConvention015.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/DemocraticConvention015.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

MSNBC

Miss America was there:

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=MissAmerica.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/MissAmerica.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

And so was Chris Matthews! Here he is getting ready to interview Governor Jon Tester of Montana.

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=DemocraticConvention005.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/DemocraticConvention005.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Then this nice lady from Code Pink came along and gave me a "I am a delegate for peace" sticker. Great outfit too.

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=CodePinkgal.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/CodePinkgal.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I hung out and watched Chris Matthews do his interview. Then he came over and talked to us because the lady in front of me kept yelling "We know you vote Republican". He grinned a little and mouthed the words "So what" to her. He walked up to her and jokingly said "You're a loon aren't you?" It was too funny. the he had one of the staff come over and give us all t shirts and hats. I waited to see if I could get a glimpse of Keith Olbermann, who was doing his show on the second story of the that platfrom thingy. It was hot and I was ready to go. So I walked over the pedestrian bridge that crosses the Platte River and I 25 towards home. There I ran into the Renewable Energy Roadshow. Al Gore you are not forgotten:

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=PolarBearExpress.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/PolarBearExpress.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The city was so full of people that for a minute I felt like I was in New York again. Needless to say, I had a fantastic time. there were a lot of people on bikes so I may ride down tomorrow morning and see what else I can see. Also, everyone was being cool and peaceful. It was a good vibe.

Wow! How exciting is all this Chris?? You looked like you were having a BLAST!! Thanks for sharing all of this with us! You look cute in pink, and LOVE the gloves! :p

Hugs,

Arlene

ajm when people talk about how great our economy was under Clinton they always fail to mention that Clinton inherited an economy that was on a upswing. And when he left office it was on a downswing.

Well, Bush I had to saise taxes in 1990 to pay for the huge budget deficit caused by Ronald R. Thus, came the alleged upswing, which really wasn't anything to brag about. Nice try though :wavey:

Here's an article on it http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2004/08/b134891.html -- I get the source, but I cite it for the raw data as I haven't time to pull all the cites.

Correcting A Picture In A Thousand Words

By Gene Sperling | August 5, 2004

On Wednesday August 4, the New York Times printed a chart constructed by former Treasury Secretary George P. Shultz which purported to illustrate the following: "President Clinton inherited prosperity; President Clinton bequeathed recession." Shultz's "Op-Chart" is extremely deceptive and misleading. The following memo explains the misleading components of his analysis and attempts to clarify the record:

1. The economy Clinton inherited: Shultz's contention that Clinton "inherited prosperity" is misleading; an objective assessment of late 1992 and early 1993 reveals a weak and highly uncertain economic environment.

Overall economic growth was extremely shaky in late 1992 and early 1993: GDP growth when President Clinton took office in the first quarter of 1993 was essentially flat – recorded as negative for most of the last decade, and revised to an extremely anemic 0.5 percent growth in a benchmark revision in December 2003.

The unemployment rate stayed persistently high during 1992 and early 1993: Shultz's piece conveniently chose to ignore the unemployment rate, which hovered in the 7.6-7.8 percent range for much of 1992 and was at 7.3 percent when President Clinton took office. [BLS]

In some states unemployment was 10 percent or higher: For example, in West Virginia the unemployment rate in January 1993 was a whopping 11.1 percent and in California it was 9.7 percent. [BLS]

While job growth resumed in 1992, it was anemic: Average monthly job growth in 1992 was 118,000, half the 236,000 monthly job growth averaged for all eight years of the Clinton presidency. [BLS]

Many of the nation's top economic analysts concurred with the interpretation of a weak and uncertain economy in the second half of 1992:
James Cooper and Kathleen Madigan, Business Week: "To be sure, President-elect Bill Clinton inherits a struggling economy." [BusinessWeek 11/23/92
Bruce Steinberg, Merrill Lynch: "The economy is comatose and shows only the faintest signs of life right now." [Quoted in the Washington Post, 9/26/92]
Allen Sinai: "There are real signs here that the economy is sliding badly, surprisingly badly." [Quoted in the Washington Post, 9/26/92]
Fortune Magazine's Annual Economic Forecast: 11/2/92 "Everywhere executives are grumbling in disappointment – they had expected things to be better by now…The economy could be even weaker than the official figures show."
Washington Post, article by Steven Mufson and John Berry, 9/10/92: "Americans have been unable to mount a convincing economic recovery … the economy is crawling forward so slowly that it appears to be standing still … In some statistical categories .. there has even been a "triple dip."

[B]2. The economy under President Clinton was exceptional, historic and record-breaking, not just the continuation of the status quo. Shultz's visual representation of the Clinton administration's economic record as somehow flat or ordinary is grossly misleading. President Clinton not only presided over the longest economic expansion in our nation's history, but broke from the previous period's trend and oversaw exceptional progress on nearly every major economic indicator:

Sustained income growth, broadly shared: After seeing family incomes stagnate from 1979-1993 (growing only 0.7 percent over the entire period) family incomes rose 17 percent – or more than $7,000 per family – from 1993-2000. This growth represented a clear break from the preceding 12 years, not the continuation of a trend.
In contrast to 1979-1993, when families in the bottom quintile saw their income decline by 13 percent in real terms, the period from 1993-2000 saw family incomes in the bottom quintile grow by 24 percent – faster than the median family. Again, the broadly shared quality of growth in the 1990s was fundamentally distinct from growth the 1980s.

23 million new jobs created – the most of any administration: The Clinton administration created more jobs than any administration in American history; 22.6 million, 92 percent of which were in the private sector.

Revived growth in manufacturing jobs: After losing 1.9 million manufacturing jobs under Presidents Reagan and Bush I, President Clinton oversaw manufacturing job growth of 303,000 from 1993-2000.

Near doubling of productivity growth: The fiscal discipline of the Clinton administration helped usher in a virtuous cycle of lower interest rates, stronger investment, and a shift in productivity growth that has been sustained in recent years. Between 1973 and 1995, productivity growth averaged 1.4 percent a year. Between 1995 and 2000, productivity growth accelerated to 2.5 percent a year, or nearly double the rate of the earlier period.

Unemployment to its lowest level in 30 years – below 5 percent for 43 straight months: The unemployment rate fell by 42 percent over the course of the Clinton presidency and remained below 5 percent from July 1997 to the end of Clinton's second term in January 2001. The 4 percent unemployment rate in 2000 – the lowest in over 30 years – stands in contrast to an average unemployment rate of 7.1 percent under Presidents Reagan and Bush I.

Record deficits turned to record surpluses: Under President Clinton, we went from a record nominal deficit of $290 billion in 1992 to the largest surplus in history – $236 billion in 2000. This dramatic fiscal turnaround was by no means a continuation of the status quo – In 1992, the Congressional Budget Office was projecting a $455 billion deficit in 2000.

3. Schultz distorts the recent recession and ignores the implications of his own chart:

Inaccurately portrays 2001 recession: Further underscoring the biased nature of his chart, Shultz incorrectly displays the most recent recession as beginning in January 2001 – the last month President Clinton was in office – rather in March 2001 as the independent NBER Recession Dating Committee has established.

Ignores the historic weakness of the current jobs recovery that his own chart displays: Shultz fails to acknowledge that by his own calculations, we are experiencing the weakest jobs recovery since the Great Depression:

For nearly two years after the recession officially ended in November 2001 our economy continued to lose jobs – something that has not happened since the 1930s.
The 1.4 million jobs created in the last year – the 20th to 31st months of the recovery – represent the weakest job growth for this period of any sustained recovery since before World War II.

As a result, we are 7 million jobs behind where the Council of Economic Advisers projected we would be – a projection made in February 2002, after 9/11 and the recession. [Council of Economic Advisers, "2002 Economic Report of the President," February 2002.]

_____________________________________________

Again, any growth, and there was a little, came after a tax raise. That does not in any way support you all's arguments

Look I could care a less about Clinton, but the facts clearly state the economy soared in his Presidency and although when W took office the country was headed into a downturn, according to most economists, the spark caused by W"s tax cuts was quickly extinguished by W's insane spending of borrowed money.

What's amazing to watch about the DNC (and it's the same for the R's at their convention) is how the people eat it up. They know what's coming, and still they eat it up. The looks on their faces, the crying. Lambs being led to the slaughter.

Hearing the truth at these conventions would be a revelation.

Again this is for both sides.

I have to say I agree. It drives me crazy when both sides make these sweeping generalizations that do not tell the whole story and make these mostly unfounded insinuations. But, people love it I guess, disappointing really.

I watched it and had a chance to be in the stadium but passed.

The message I got was the Democrats answer to the Republican commericals, saying Obama isn't ready to lead,.

Obama's response McCain doesn't have a clue how to lead.

He's not middle class and never has been.

Did you see the McCain commercials congratulating Obama?

I will be interested to see what the Republicans come up with. I want to hear what music they choose. I didn't identify with some of the tunes the Dem's played.

So I hopped on my bike and went for a ride towards the Pepsi Center yesterday morning.

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=DemocraticConvention025.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/DemocraticConvention025.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

They had reopened Speer Blvd. and Auraria Parkway so I was able to get close.

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=DemocraticConvention026.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/DemocraticConvention026.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

I rode up to the CNN Grill looking for AC but they were packin' up shackin' up. The party had begun to move to Mile High.

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=DemocraticConvention027.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/DemocraticConvention027.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Apparently one of the perqs of coming to the convention is being able to use the "Royal Toilets."

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=DemocraticConvention029.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/DemocraticConvention029.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

They Young Republicans in their togas had begun their march to Mile High:

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=YoungRepublicans.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/YoungRepublicans.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

With that I decided to go home and get ready to go to Mile High. When I got there, the line was unbelievable.

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=Theline.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/Theline.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

It wasn't moving very fast. The cops handed out water to everyone.

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=Watercops.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/Watercops.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

The city workers did too.

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=DemocraticConvention032.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/DemocraticConvention032.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Finally the line started to move and we saw people hawking all kinds of stuff but this guy is one of my faves. He was selling a t shirt that said McCan't. I love it! The other guy's said "Run DNC."

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=McCant.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/McCant.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

We were led through a zig zag route to the entrance to the stadium. We started at 17th (Dick Connor Way) and back down to about 19th then back again through a parking lot and finally down and embankment where Colfax meets Federal Blvd. There were elderly people behind me and I was worried for them as I had a hard time getting down the embankment. Why they did that, I do not know. That was the only bonehead move I saw as far as crowd control. Then the fast walk sprint was on to security. We went through the same set up that we would go through at the airport except we didn't have to take our shoes off. Then off to find seats. I ended up in Section 533. I collapsed into my seat because it felt as though we had climbed Mount Evans by the time I got there. Those stairs at Mile High are steep! But I was afforded and incredible view to the west and of the setting sun.

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=DemocraticConvention036-1.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/DemocraticConvention036-1.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

President Eisenhower's grandaughter came out to speak.

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=DemocraticConvention035.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/DemocraticConvention035.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Then they had some military generals (who are Dems) come out and do a little presentation. A loud cheer went up when Wesley Clark was introduced. Then, surprise, Joe Biden came out to introduce some regular folks that were going to speak, including that one lady who was a life long Republican until her husband had a heart attack and the Barney Smith/Smith Barney guy. They were both a treat.

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=JoeBiden.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/JoeBiden.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=JoeBiden2.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/JoeBiden2.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Another loud cheer went up and I looked down to see Michelle Obama, Sasha and Malia.

<a href="http://s15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/?action=view&current=MichelleObama.jpg" target="_blank"><img src="http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a397/peekingsleeping/Democratic%20National%20Convention/MichelleObama.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a>

Then it was time for the video. It went into Barack's life story. And then at the end of it with no introduction, he just walked out onto the stage. The place went crazy. If you watched then you know the rest. I'll never forget what it was like to watch history in the making.

WOW...I admire you. You had the guts to go to the stadium. When I sit that high up, I have the feeling of falling out of my seat. Incredible photos. Thanks.

The news said people were lining up 24 hours in advance at the stadium. A local bank (in Castle Rock) was trying to get rid of 12 tickets...I was tempted...but chickened out.

I believe in the spirit world and would like to think that you have captured "energy orbs" aka spirits, but skeptic would say you caught reflections from the lights at Investco Field.

Again -- Great photos!
