i think storms is a very underrated song...what is it about, i don't think every song is about lindsey or mick, which seems to be the interpretation we give most of her songs

Not gonna lie, there are times when I like this song, and others when I don't. Sometimes I feel like her vocal is a bit puny and weak....Not enough strength to carry it in my opinion.

i agree, i go through modes with this song, where i can't get enough and than i can't stand to listen to it...lyrically, absolutely beautiful, vocally i think a little weak...but definately a hidden gem in the extensive nicks catalogue

I don't know what Storms is about but I used to listen to it at my old apt. with Noah my cat nearby and I'd smoke a cigar and have a little brandy, this was during the wintertime and my thoughts are that its a song about someone left behind but I am not sure it was desirous. I think the parting was caused by something external and still there is a love affair. I don't think its about Lindsay or someone that the public knows, but I am just guessing. Thanks for the post!

I think this song is about Stevie~
with a little Lindsey thrown in- Personally it is one of my favorire songs~

The reason I say it's about Stevie is-
"Never have I been a calm blue sea, I have always been a storm" I think she really is describing herself, the way her personality and emotions rule her. Same thing with Angel another Tusk song , although that song is clearly about Lindsey as much as Siver Spring is-I don't care what she says it is about!
(I think she was at her peak creatively during Tusk)
Sister of the Moon- Sara- Beautiful Child...all about Stevie

Even more recently- when she wrote Fall from Grace..."Why am I always so intense?"
I think some songs are about her, she writes about herself like she is a character, in her songs I think we see the insecure Stephanie.

Remember there is "Stevie Nicks"and then there is Stephanie two different people and I think she questions her own choices more than she lets on-
And she writes about that. \However she is Stevie Nicks, she sounds very confident in interviews about being a Rockstar- Not a mother or living a normal life. She is an actor playing the part of the Fabulous Rockstar

But in her heart she is Stephanie~~still asking herself how she let Lindsey get away...
and why didn't she stay home and have babies and the normal life he wanted. With music as a second priority.

I think she spends many hours thinking those thoughts whie she is staring at walls or stairs or hallways and doors ;)

I personally love Storms. It's one of those songs I listen to when I am feeling a bit down and even though it's a melancholy song, it gives me some hope. It's probably the song of Stevie's that I can best relate to and see myself in. When I listen to it, I feel optimistic knowing that someone else has felt the same way as me once upon a time and gotten through it. I would love to hear her sing this live just once in my life.

i definately agree that this song should be pulled out of the FM catalogue and put in a show, kind of like what they did with Beautiful Child during the say you will tour

I enjoyed reading that. I definitely think we can all assume that Stevie is talking about herself during Storms, especially the blue calm sea part. However, I do not think that she is still hung up over Lindsey and whatnot. I don't think she's living that double life. I mean, I could be wrong and everything, but that's just my opinion.

I agree
I loved the song. I would have chosen this far more instead of Beatuiful Child for the last tour.

About the interpretation I don't know and don't care much, honestly. Whoever it was, I thank him because he inspired to Stevie such a song. I think it's Stevie's masterpieces with Sisters of The Moon, Trouble in Shangri La, Fall from Grace and Illume ( and some other six or seven :p).

Lyrically I think it's the most powerful song she's written, and the arrangement is impeccable, even though in the demos there were some very good ideas too.

Lyrically, I think this is one of Stevie's very best songs. Once upon a time, I didn't care for the vocals much. But these days I really like them... sounds like she just finished crying when she sang them. And that song is most certainly about devastating heartbreak... so it totally fits. This truly is one of my favorite Stevie songs ever... wish she'd perform it live before she retires.

i honestly think in my heart of hearts, the mac will be pulling out some great material for their tour next year...songs that haven't been performed live much...so hopefully stevie will pull out storms or even dare i say...straight back???:blob2:

My favorite Stevie song..

I tend to love the "demo" version.. with Lindsey's guitar strumming, Mick on drums, and Christine on b3 organ.

It's just a wonderful, beautiful, heartbreaking, somber song!

I saw an interview on youtube.com where Stevie said that she is very proud of the the lyrics for Storms. She said something along the lines of that they are complex and intricatelly woven..great writing. I also heard that this song is about her affair with Mick. An absolutely beautiful song! Did they perform it on the Tusk tour???

i literally just remembered something about storms... in a magazine interview, stevie said the most sad, intimate and personal line she has ever written was from song storms..."every hour of fear that i spent...my body tries to cry...living through each empty night...a deadly call inside..."

No they never did ..I disagree with the posters who think the vocal is weak..it suits the song and arrangement perfectly IMO.

Storms is one of my favorites and totally got me through the suicide of my boyfriend when I was 20 and still such a child dealing with grown up problems..."every night that goes betweeen I feel a little less"....and "i'd like to leave you with something warm..." Some of the most deeply felt and touching lyrics I've ever connected too....LOVE IT!!

I personally think the lyrics are brillant!! My favorite Stevie era is during the tusk album. Wish I was alive back then to see it in person!!! Her voice is AMAZING and I LOVE the songs she did for the album!!! SOTM is one of my absolute favorites!!!

I can truly appreciate STORMS now but it took awhile. When Tusk was first released I didn't care for this song at all! It was my least favorite of Stevie's songs on Tusk. Over the years, tho, I've really warmed up to it. As for the lyrics, from what I know she's referencing a few people in this song. Lindsey is almost always a part of every song she writes so he's def. in there. Others, too.

I always was fond of this song too, since the first time I played it (on a cassette!) in the mid 80's.
I think she sounds so devastated when she sings "So I try to say goodbye, my friend..." and also the "...not all of the prayers in the world, could save us..." parts.

It's a bit long though, and the demo is way longer. FM (well, I guess LB's production) did the song great justice, the way the arrangement slowly builds up and finishes with such a layer-y and lush sound.

This song is about her affair with Mick. She said in a radio interview before her vegas shows in 2005 that is was about Mick. I think it was an interview with Jim Ladd. I'd have to find the exact interview to be sure.

Tusk was my first Fleetwood Mac record, didn't care for Lindsey's songs at first.
How crazy was that?

Tusk was my fist Fleetwood Mac record, didn't care for Lindsey's songs at first.

Tusk was the first FM album I bought, though I had heard singles from the other 2 records. When I got it, I got it because of Sara. I remember I liked the single Tusk, but I didn't like any of Lindsey's other songs on the record at the time either. Took me awhile to warm up to them. Michele

Michele, Sara was the song I looked forward to the most. Even though I'd heard some of FM's earlier singles from the other two albums Tusk was the song that really grabbed my attention on the radio. What a unique experience it was listening to the Tusk album. Nothing like it before or since.

this song really touches me too

when I graduated from high school in 1987, this verse was printed in my "autobiography" in the back of the yearbook... along with other various kinds of info about me

So I try to say
Goodbye my friend
I'd like to leave you with something warm
But never have I been a blue calm sea
I have always been a storm

These words meant, and still mean a lot to me

There's no thunder in any version of Storms I have ever heard. You must be thinking of the wall of sound version of Thrown Down.

Oh, the demo is unlistenable. It's interminably long. But the album version is perfection. It has remained one of my favorite Stevie songs, even as I've gotten tired of others I used to love.

TUSK is such a great album it's hard to limit myself to just one fave. If I had to choose just one, I'd have to say SARA. Everything about that song is just so peaceful and ethereal.

Stevie has said she wrote the song about her relationship with Mick. It's really hard for me to fathom how someone like Mick could inspire some of Stevie's greatest songs.

I think you should listen a little closer. Toward the end at around 5 minutes into the song there's a low rumble which I thought was thunder. I don't believe it's really the recorded sound of thunder, but maybe some studio trick. Maybe it's more pronounced on the vinyl. I know that "I Know I'm Not Wrong" sounds a lot different on the vinyl version.

Anyway, a thunder sound would fit in the song Storms, wouldn't it?

Paleshadow and Strand I'm glad you heard it too.

I just listened to it on the various CD's I have and heard the sound on all of them,
except of course the alternate version which appeared on the 2nd CD on the newly
remastered Tusk (2 CD set).

"Storms" is about her trying to deal with herself in a way. Trying to deal with her break up with Lindsey.....

I am very fond of this song because of the words she expresses about herself. I sing this song for my cousin who died 10 years ago next month, and let me tell you, she was the blue calm sea and I deffinatley and even still to this day am a storm. Every word that is sung is sung with such sencerity and pain that Stevie really brings the song to life in a way were you can feel what she's feeling. And she does a great job expressing it. I love the song, and everything it means and stands for. To me that's what the song means. It is about Stevie expressing how she's trying to deal with herself and her break up with Lindsey. Was the song written during their break up? I believe it was.

i wish the song got more credit i guess, considering sara was her main single, and sisters of the moon was so loved during the live performances during tusk...i think storms was kind of forgotten...and i would of loved if the song cecelia was included on tusk!!
