View Full Version : Is this how we get Buckingham Nicks?

For those who prefer old-fashioned CD's, it can be hard to locate out-of-print items, even among small retailers plying the Internet. But Amazon's Createspace will parntner with EMI, Sony BMG, Rhino and other labels to list out-of-print items online and custom-burn them. This on-demand approach is already common in book publishing. (article printed in Home Theater magazine, Sept. 08 issue).
So is this how we finally get Buckingham Nicks?

There are already tons of bootlegs of this on CD out there anyhow, from the "official Austraila release" which isn't, to just regular homemade copies. But having said that, for years the record collectors magazine, "Goldmine" used to do it's annual "want list" on CD and "Buckingham Nicks" always topped the list. The people at "Goldmine" would then contact record labels with these lists, it actually got some of the titles issued on disc.
Rhino Handmade which is an offshoot of Rhino Records does nothing more than release hard to find out of print albums complete with top notch artwork and liner notes and are official releases. They had been approached several times about putting the album out, they agreed, all they needed were the master tapes and the ok from whoever had the tapes. Stevie and Lindsey have the master tapes. Stevie has been ok with putting the album out for years, at least the last twenty anyhow. Lindsey on the other hand feels the album isn't his best work so he's the one holding it up.
You don't need to work on record labels, you need to work on Lindsey.

There are some "rumours" (well, I recall, I THINK in a Keith Olsen interview) that the master tapes are in really bad fragile shape, that they'd only have one shot at dubbing them onto a digital recorder...that the tapes are in worse shape than the Dead Sea Scrolls.

I already have BuckinghamNicks on cd. I bought it at this record shop here in st.Louis that sells imports and bootlegs and stuff. The disc is painted to look exactly like the Polydoor lable. It's nice to have. I got it for like 30.00 though. It has a case and cover everything. Just not the lyrics.

this album would be a huge seller for them if it got a rerelease. The integrity of the music still sounds great so it must be an issue of money/royalties or a disinterest by record companies which would be foolish.
The sell of bootlegs is only hurting it.
I say release the damn thing already! My hair is graying.

La Nicks has repeatedly and relatively recently said LB is the hold up for re-releasing BN. LB somewhat denied this.
I personally think LB does not care for BN. He dropped Don't Let me Down Again after he played it once on the last FM tour and I do not think he plays it live. So, I tend to believe La Nicks here.
In the end, who knows.

I agree that Lindsey is probably the holdup- if only because Stevie is, as we all know, all about re-releasing/re-packaging the same old stuff for effortless $$$.
The band (not just Lindsey) dropped the song because it went over like a lead balloon that night in Madison. It sounded quite good, but you could tell by the looks on their faces that they felt their "experiment" had failed.

I don't know -- I was there on like the sixth row and the fans reacted positively from what I saw, though the key was awful
In the end, I think he is loathe to play it.
He did, though, include a little of the vocal at the Soundstage solo thingee he did - at La Nicks' prodding

Yes, it was then. It is on the released product as well. All of us who were there was immediately silent after she started singing in sort of a "OMG -- are they really going to do it" kind of way.

Stevie once said something to the effect of writing that book when the principals are too old to care any more. Since Mick, John & Lindsey all have young children, I doubt that book will ever happen.

She'll write a book when Fleetwood Mac is finished, I would imagine.
Lindsey and her still own the rights to BN right? Maybe when the Fleetwood Mac thing is over Lindsey can take the source material and remaster it. They probably won't release it because there's not much money in it. Or they'd have to front their own money to get it out there. A small BN tour to support it would be cool.

well, okay, maybe. IF she gets mad enough at Lindsey on the up and coming tour.
I wonder how much interest ($$$$) there would be in such a project. Sure, we'd have an interest here on The Penguin, but would it be more broad based?
Out of curiousity, I just checked Don Felder's book out on the NY Times Best Sellers list (The Eagles). I was surprised to find that it's still hanging in there:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/03/books/bestseller/0803besthardnonfiction.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
It's listed at #23. It wasn't that scathing of a book.
Yes, according to Stevie, they alone own the rights. It's that 'old car' in the garage, I think she once said. She'd put it out as is. Lindsey wants to make something more of it. Hopefully he'll have the time. (but it's not looking good right now!)

Well if Stevie and Lindsey did a tour...I'm almost sure 6 to 8 of the songs in the set list would be solo/& or Fleetwood Mac numbers. We'd be lucky if the other 1/3 of the setlist would be Buckingham Nicks tunes. You've got all the Stevie fans that go see her solo tours that would go see her plus the Buck-fans.

That's what Lindsey was saying during UTS. He said that they need some kind of an event to release it with. Why he thinks that I don't know. Or why he decided to say he thinks that, I don't know. But he talked about a BN tour or some kind of publicity push to accompany the release.

I'd love it too, but if you can release the CD easily, while a tour takes a long time to coordinate and plan, then I'd say just give us the CD and fergeddaboutit.
Lindsey was suggesting that they needed to wait for an event that would give BN exposure, an anniversary or some such crazy thing. He doesn't have to sit around waiting for the next eclipse.

At this point, I feel WGAF about this. I have a bootlegged CD and a couple of original gatefolds. It would be nice to have, but I stopped caring YEARS ago. If it comes out, I'll buy it. If not, I'll just listen to the bootleg CD.
Now, I'd love to have a Vaudville Years equivalent to the first tour with Stevie and Lindsey. (Upon which the series MUST die.) I mean, they did stuff like Jumpin' At Shadows and Frozen Love on that tour, plus all of the then Mac classics. That's the type of stuff that gets me excited. But Buckingham Nicks? I'm over that.

But For How Long? All Of Us Here Are Always Goinb To Love It Cause We Know It And Talk About It All The Time. But W/ All Due Respect, All Mac Members Are Getting To The End Of Their "people Care" Rope. Combine Those That Recall Is As A One Hit Wonder Great Album W/ The General Mac Masses And That's About It. Gaining A New Audience Will Be Pretty Damn Difficult In Todays Music Arena, Imo Ofcourse. So, Again, Imo, If They Don't Release It Pretty Damn Quickly It's Going To Go Nowhere Worse Than When It Was Initially Released.

Its a total shame that 'they' haven't released it yet. The full package with extra notes and extra songs. Its like....us die-hards will still purchase it. I myself have some various boots of this cd but an 'offical' one would be special. Really there is no excuse they both can give for not releasing it anymore. They lose in my opinion. Heck it should've been put out after the Dance. Another wasted opportunity really by both of them. If they did tour...it should have most all the songs from that LP only plus some extras....we can 'hear' there solo stuff on there solo tours....IMO anyway....I think this would be a great way of releasing something special.....Maybe Lindsey needs to also get on the ball and do a box set of his own solo material as well as a DVD of his solo stuff (ex: like Stevie's Enchanted box set...he does need one )....well after this 'new' GFS comes out......and well there's a list of endless things Stevie could do as well...re-issue all of ther solo LPs with extra cds along with DVD's....special packaging...photos rare songs.....really the list is endless...same with FMac can re-issue from the'Live' lp on....no excuses really.....Its really a shame...thats all I can say.....another way to dis the true fans once again..........heck there Millionares what do they care.......except when they run out of the $$.......:rolleyes:

I believe MANY of us fans would love a tour with the Buckingham Nicks album, and there's a lot of former bandmates that would love a piece of that action, but I don't personally think it will happen. (I would like to be surprised.) If Stevie isn't too keen on touring under the name of "Fleetwood Mac" with Lindsey at the helm (with a bit of a checks and balance present), and hasn't been happy with the lack of--let's call it "control" (as she isn't a musician) with that band, I don't see her wanting to be in a situation where Lindsey truly has all control. "You will never rule me the way you ruled me" might sound haunting familiar when applied to such an outting. Does anyone else think this?

Why tour as Buckingham Nicks when a Fleetwood Mac tour would gross considerably more? Really, the only difference between the two would be the rhythm section. None of the others who were involved, save for maybe Waddy (who would probably take the place of Carlos in the mini-Mac), would even be considered for the tour.
If they were SMART, they would reissue the Buckingham Nicks album in conjunction with the 2009 tour, and add a few songs from that album to the set (provided they bring back a Peter Green or Bob Welch song or two).
BTW, I don't buy that the master tapes are in bad shape. Long Distance Winner sounded fine to my ears on Enchanted.

It wouldn't be about the gross, Steve- its about the publicity. Appearances on Letterman/Tonight Show, a few concerts in major, major markets at HOB type venues. Two week road commitment, tops.

As Ken Caillat/Keith Olsen have both said, the two-track stereo mix (which is what's needed for a basic CD release) has been re-mastered and is just fine. What's missing is the original 24 track recording, which is needed for a proper 5.1 mix.

I have heard that Stevie owns the whole rights to buckingham nicks and bought out lindseys part of buckingham nicks to me its up to stevie when she wants to release that. I remember her saying this on rockline in 1989 i heard her say they will go in the studio and tweek it a bit for release sometime in the future she wasn't sure when that will happen. I have a cassette of buckingham nicks and also on album original love it and someone burned it for me with some additional stuff they found on line that was done around that time frame.
So my guess she will release when she feels its the right time it would be great if they do release it and also tour with her and lindsey just themselves as Buckingham Nicks would be an awesome show together. well we can dream maybe sometimes dreams do come true so we all have to wait and see.:wavey:

Call me crazy, but I still don't see the point. I mean, does anybody believe that they won't do I'm So Afraid, Dreams, et. al.? They'd get considerably more publicity linking it to a Fleetwood Mac tour than as Buckingham Nicks. Plus, you know they'll put a sticker on the album that'll say "File Under Fleetwood Mac" anyway.
However, if they do go out as Buckingham Nicks, I think Mick and John should get Bekka, Billy, and Dave back for a two week reunion tour, too, and actually do a few proper shows for the Time album.

Good luck finding a promoter to take a risk on that- oh, and finding an audience, too.
Even after all this time, I still think (and I'm sure Stevie & Lindsey still feel) that the Buckingham Nicks album (& concept) is still pretty valuable and significant. If done properly, the promotion & re-release of the album can still be quite successful considering the required effort involved- I'm convinced of this.

Yes, they do own the rights jointly. Stevie discusses that often and Lindsey was talking about it too during the UTS tour. Even when one of them uses their own songs on an album as Stevie has, it's done with permission.
