in the song baby doll, shes says "what do i got to sell...a pink satin dress, a silk shawl, and a abolene shell..."
Where in the world did she come up with that, maybe she read it in a book or something
Any speculation?

An abalonie shell is a very expensive sea shell found only off the coast of New Zealand. She probably heard about it when Fleetwood Mac toured there on the Tusk
Tour.
As for the song lyrics, I hear, A big satin dress, a silver tray and an abo--lonie-shell.

I'm not sure how she came up with those items but I always thought it was a pink satin dress ,a silver tray and an abalone shell?

No "abolene" in the dictionary online or in my American Heritage hardbound 1st edition. I didn't bother checking the OED or Webster's 2nd.
Does she say "Abilene"? It's a city in Texas. Or does she say abalone (a tetrasyllabic name for a delicious marine gastropod)? The inside of the abalone shell has a soft, pastel iridescent finish that has been popular for decades as a decorative item. Maybe Stevie kept abalone shells propped up around her bathtub (a common California practice), or even made beads & necklaces out of the shell (popular among hippies in the 1960s & '70s).

I think they have the actual lyrics on buckinghamnicks.net. I really like that website, it;s good for lyrics and speculation.

i have a few different verions of baby doll, and she says many different things during that part...like a pink satin dress, a silver tray, a silk shawl... but she always ends that verse with a abolone shell

Maybe they were some things she gave to her mother that day to sell at the Silver Springs Emporium. ;)

My version: a BIG satin dress sounds completely stupid now that I see you and a few other people have said, a PINK satin dress.
I never heard a version with SILK SHAWL in it tho.

You can buy abolene shells when you're on that road all the way down to Emmeline.

For some reason, I don't think she wrote this song. Wasn't it credited to soemone else on one of the reels?

buckinghamnicks, credits Stevie for the song, so I'm thinking that maybe she did write it.

Why don't you guys ask Tom Moncrieff about the song? Penguin is running a Q&A with him soon. Maybe he remembers the song & can shed some compositional light on it.
The chords don't sound standard Stevie to me.
We can ask Moncrieff about dozens of songs we have from Stevie. But it would help if he were willing to listen to audio files so that we all know exactly what we're referring to. We could post audio files of some of these strange songs for him to listen to. Once he heard something, it might spark a memory that a mere title -- especially a phony title -- would not.

I think she's talking about Abilene. That was Mason Williams birthplace. By hooking up with great guitar men who imitated this greatguitarist, she was just trying to get to her true passion: Mason Williams! Who can't hear the essence of Classical Gas in Big Love? So, obviously Lindsey is a "shell" of the man from Abilene! :]

You'd have to give him some Thorazine first. He always jokes with me, when I ask him about working with Stevie, that he needs Thorazine to unblock his memory. He said he purposefully blocked out a lot of that period of time. After he's done remembering, he usually says he needs to stare at a wall.

After listening to those damn demos of hers for about thirty years, I'm more than ready for a thorazine infusion ... along with a morphine drip.
