About Lindsey Buckingham:
For more then three decades, Lindsey Buckingham has had a reputation among millions of fans and countless fellow musicians as an honored and singular...
"Troublemaker?" he offers, with a mischievous laugh.
Well, it was going to be creative force and innovator, a mad scientist experimenter mixing passion and craft into a distinctive and affecting artistry. But troublemaker will do. "The world needs more troublemakers," Buckingham says. Troublemaker, mad scientist, whatever you see him as, Lindsey Buckingham is behind some of the most beloved and creative twists in modern popular music. And with Gift of Screws he has made the kind of trouble only he can, more than ever before bringing together the broad appeal he shown as the main force behind the sound of Fleetwood Mac since he joined the group in 1973 with the restless spirit of experimentalism he's shown both with such Mac landmarks as Rumours, Tusk and in his own visionary solo albums.
Gift of Screws is, in fact, a bracing and immediate result of 35 years of exploration and growth, made by an artist who has against the odds found new confidence and new abilities to express himself in ways at once challenging and accessible. Rarely have the full array of his talents and all aspects of his scope and sensibilities been integrated so thoroughly and winningly as on this album. In some ways it's a rocking complement to his last album, 2006's acoustic-focused Under the Skin, balancing such layered guitars-and-voice contemplations as "Time Precious Time" and "Bel Air Rain" with the seductive rush of the title song and the opener "Great Day."
In some ways it's an extension of the renewal with his Fleetwood Mac legacy - Mick Fleetwood and John McVie provide the unmistakable foundation on several songs, including the embracing "Wait for You" and the gloriously mad title song. And linking the two are insightful examinations of love and belonging in "Love Runs Deeper" and the secure-yet-shadowed closing pair "Underground" and "Treason." Showcased throughout are Buckingham's noted virtuosity as a guitarist and producer, as well as his expressiveness as both a singer and writer.
"You could certainly say this album is a distillation of a number periods of time, some false starts to make albums, certainly some songs that go back a number of years, that took a while to find a home here, combined with brand-new songs and a whole other outlook," he says. "And the fact that there was a kind of tenacity and focus to want to bring all of this together in one place. The fact that as an artist I'm still, for better or worse, clinging to my idealism and to my sense that there is still yet much to be said. This is a culmination of that."
*Offer valid only with purchase of Gift Of Screws. This special offer is valid for DOMESTIC orders only. Pre-ordered CDs shipping with promotional material are limited to (5) per customer. Booklets will be available while supplies last, newburycomics.com will post information when autographed booklets are sold out.

I think the album cover shot and this one are designed -- even the way the camera is angled and focused -- is designed to make him look -- not good. They went out of their way to create a certain effect. I could take an unposed picture of Lindsey with a cheap polaroid camera and no special lighting and his eyes would be alive -- they wouldn't be dull and rheumy. I think they were aiming for that look deliberately. That's why I feel it is fake, just a different kind of fake than the "glamour" shots try to attain.

Crap, that's an ugly picture.
I mean, the guy is good looking (for any age) but really does look intentionally horrid in that picture.
And, of course he's posing. He's got this whole theme going with this album. This...oh, this is just me hanging out and being a tortured artist, aren't I just too real by showing you this side...look.
I don't like it at all. And I have liked all kinds of pictures he's taken (from dark and stormy to sarcastically smiling). But this is rather pretentious, IMO, and I'm not finding it real at all.
To me, these promo pictures should reflect who you are at a certain time in your life--as a person, and as an artist. By all accounts, he's more productive than ever, and happier than ever (per him). So, I'm not loving the Keith Richards Wannabe photos. No, let me take it back. As scary as Keith's pictures can be, he generally smiles in his.
Disclaimer: This is just my personal opinion. Please don't get your knickers in a knot. I'll be drooling over the real deal this fall along with the rest of you (well, provided he doesn't look like THAT on stage:laugh:)

On another note, I was worried about the one eye of Lindsey's in the colored photos. It isn't opened all the way or is *droopy*. He looks tired & stressed. It made me think aobut his health and his mild form of epilepsy...which probably have NOTHING to do with the photo.

Thank you. My God, people age. I understand everyone's point of view, however it's absurd to think LB or any of the Mac are going to be as "all that" as they were in the '70s. It sucks but they've aged. I'm glad they are still here regardless....considering the lifestyle, they've aged well, I think. Take Mick for instance, he looks a hell of a lot better now than he did then.
On the droopy eye subject, I wonder if it is a side affect of the dilantin. My dad was on that for a long time and I notice LB has the same mouth "tics" if you will...

Thank you. My God, people age.
Well, my view has nothing to do with Lindsey's age or aging. I think he was gorgeous and is gorgeous. I also think he chose a certain "look" for the photo we saw today and for the album cover. It's not just the way he is. He chose a certain look for Go Insane. He wanted to look wacko.
This time around, for whatever reason, he wanted to look woebegone. He doesn't look like that every day. He didn't look like that on the webcam shots Betsy gave us. That photo is an affected look. It's an image. I think it's fine for him to do that, because he's quirky and he always does things that make little sense to his bandmates or to the average Joe. So, I think it's in keeping with his personality to do something strange like that. I also think it's ripe for mocking.
It reminds me of something. When people take "before" and "after" photos, one of the tricks they use is to do many things to make them look awful "before" so that everyone will be amazed by the "after" image. So, if it's a weight product, they don't just show a person who is overweight, they show the "before" person in ugly clothes, a limp hair style, with a dour facial expression and poor posture. They really make them look bad for the "before" posed, so that the product will seem to have worked miracles when "after" is revealed. The person looks great in the "after" photo for reasons that actually have nothing to do with the weight they lost.
Well, those 2 particular photos of Lindsey look like his "before" poses. I just don't know what he's advertising.
The camera isn't even looking at him head on. He's shot from an angle that makes his forehead and eyes look quite different than they normally do.

WOW thanks for the side-by-side photos...yep, Lindsey definitely looks HOT in the new shot. s w o o n
I really like this picture. I haven't liked all his pictures, and I've also loved many, but this one is pretty cool. I think this shade of blue is a very attractive color for him. I say this as I spot some new candid shots of Bruce Springsteen, who is just 10 days older than LB. They both look incredible for their age, droopy eyes aside. They both could be my father and I say this without shame.
BUT, it looks to me like Linds is messin' about with the hair dye.Very cute. It looks good with the tips, but forgoodnesssakes he better not pull a Macca in the future. I might be horrified...

It's been a while since I wrote here, but I had to get in on this.
The Emily Dickinson poem from which the phrase "gift of screws" comes suggests the product of art is the result of hard work. If an artist were hard at work, would he or she not be exhausted and look pretty frazzled? The photos for this album support this--he looks like he's been hard at work!

That's what I thought! I was like, "yay, he's wearing BLUE!" I'm easy to please, I guess. And no matter what, his eyes are always that wonderful color.
Regina

I agree with Michele.
It has nothing to do with aging. I didn't see the lines or any drooping and--frankly--don't give a rat's fanny over them. He's nearing 60, he's supposed to have lines. I like that he looks like a REAL guy, as opposed to the plastic Hollywood ones.
But, he's hawking an album. Yeah, I get that he's a tortured, serious artist. But, we get all that in his songs. And all his songs, nowadays, are not even like that. Occasionally, he drops hints that he is (gasp!) happy! So, why sell an album using a picture that looks like he escaped from Riker's Island?
So, yeah. Put out a picture like that, and we have free license, IMO, to pick it apart, on the basis of what's presented in the picture. I don't necessarily think we need to berate his gray hair or whatnot. That is what it is. But the dour expression is a choice.

Exactly! I love the picture. LOVE his new shorter, lighter do! I think Lindsey is trying to portray that he's older, wiser, tireder (is that a word ). Sort of a mad genius. Maybe alittle "screwy", hence the title. As far as doing the nice pose, leather jacket, holding guitar, looking all perfect and all, he's been there, done that. He's just trying to do something different
Regina

Eh. Lindsey does what he does.
If he wants to sell something that screams "depressing songs! Within!" that's good. If he wants the average person to make the connection between his work of art, and some long-dead poet's subtext, that's cool.
I still don't like the picture, though;-)

What I don't like is the lense used. It's distorted his image so his head looks extra large, esp the forehead. Maybe he did this on purpose because the cortex is where your thoughts come from and things that make you you, your personality. It also makes his body look small. It's trippy. If it was not a zoomed in picture it would look better.
This pic isn't awful to me. I'm putting it in my "hot old Lindsey" collection along with some of these I found...

Yeah, his forehead is more pronounced. Maybe he's going to give birth to Athena. He loves to talk about the Gods on Mount Olympus.
That forehead reminds me of caricature pictures I've gotten drawn of myself at the fair. They always exaggerate my forehead. The shape of his eyes is distorted as well.

Newbury has changed their MO, the autographed booklets (Of the past) have ALWAYS been REAL handwritten autographs, not screen prints.
For those wondering, Newbury uses US 1st Class mail unless you pay/request "priority" delivery - so be patient.

I'm at school so I can't check my e-mail to see if my order was screwed up too....
ETA: I just checked (ooh, better not get in trouble) and I didn't receive the e-mail.

...and the "no dice" today (Sept. 16th)

I ordered three copies and just canceled the entire order when I got the email today...very disappointed, but I already have my free copy from WB from my tickets so it's not a total loss...
Also got the dreaded email. Gift of Screws just cost me $16.53 including tax over at Borders. Sigh, I hope the vinyl copy I ordered still arrives, hasn't shipped yet.

Best Buy - $16.23. It wasn't even prominently displayed w/ the new releases - had to go to "Buckingham" to find it. Bummed I'm not getting the Newbury one, but this way, I saved $4 or so.
They may start selling autographed CDs at the shows; autographed UTS CDs and Bass Hall DVDs are already being sold.

I was just looking at a tv interview Lindsey did and they said that the cd would be given out free to people at one of the concerts. I don't know if that's true of all of them.

I just wrote them back to remind them that they already charged me last week when they said they were shipping.

Yeah I just the same BS email. False advertisement. They should've had the CDs in hand. I asked for a full refund, and a free copy of the album. =)
I placed my order August 8 and received the shipping e-mail on September 10. WHY IN GOD'S NAME would they give out the shipping e-mail AND THEN SAY "sorry, we don't actually have the cds"?!?!?!
I haven't gotten the "sorry, we suck" e-mail yet..

So pissed at Newbury....basts! I still said send me the CD anyway. I just want it so a few more days won't really matter...it will just sweeten the anticipation...just as long as I get it before Oct 2!!!!

This is total crap! I had an awful day at work today and then to get this email about the booklet not being available just has taken it over the edge. Guess I am heading out to Walmart or Best Buy. I do feel bad for Newbury as I am sure they lost a lot of business today.
Grrr! Is is Oct. 2, 4, or 5 yet?

Why the hell are you all blaming Warner Brothers for this? Lindsey obviously didn't get around to signing the booklets- simple as that.

Without more information, I wouldn't assume that Lindsey couldn't set time aside to sign the CDs. Maybe he never even knew about them.
Last night, they were selling a guitar he signed for $7200 to benefit homeless children. Of course, that was just one guitar and the CDs involved were many, but just as he signed Bass Hall CDs for his concession stand, I'm sure he would have signed GOS cds, if he'd had them to sign.

I think Warners is too busy with their newer (Money making) artist to pay attention to someone known for a Grammy award winning album from 1977 to care...
Quick Warner employees, to the 'save Lars Ulrich from crying' headquarters, we have to make sure Metallica sells another 10,000 units to push the sales of "Death Magnetic" up from 490,000 in 3 days to the 500,000 plateau...Lars tears will melt through us faster than you can 'napster' if we dont succeed.

As a former Warner employee, I agree with you. When I worked for them from 2001 to 2003 I watched them ignore established artists to go for the quick buck with these new, much less talented bands. Truly pathetic.

Exactly. I believe that explains LB's bitterness and recent digs toward the industry.

In the Westword interview, Lindsey said when they put out UTS, Tom Whalley of Warner Bros. said, "don't expect us to do very much for it." I wonder what they told him when they agreed to release GOS. But although more exposure would have been nice, he said he knows he has a very small fan base anyway, no matter what he does.

What?? Haven't you been reading the reviews everyone has posted all over the Lindsey threads? His CD is being talked about all over the world. Maybe your local paper will mention it or maybe not, but they're out there to be read.

I had sort of written this off after keeping a track on this thread, so this was a pleasant surprise.

What a coup! Interesting. I have not received anything, but I never got the email that everyone else did. So, maybe there's hope. But even if they didn't send me a cancellation email, you'd think they'd send one saying that the shipment had been delayed. I got nothing.

GO Newbury's UK outlet!
In the US, they stated no overseas orders so I was buying for Irish friends. Had I known, I would have had those guys buy for me!

Hm? I never saw that. I ordered from Canada. The FAQ says...
"newburycomics.com ships orders of up to 3 CDs or DVDs via DHL Global Mail to the following countries - Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom."

Hope was not all lost, as I received GOS with a signed booklet! It actually came with two booklets: one in the cd case itself and one that was signed.

Cool, Maybe the label was late shipping the autographed booklets to newbury (Which could be an answer to the "the record label was unable to provide the signed booklets for this promotion" issue) and those who havent canceled their orders MAY still receive the autographed booklets.

I got a cd from Newbury Comics today, but it was not autographed. They sent an invoice with it and it said it came with "1 autographed CD Booklet" priced at $0.00 and 1 CD priced at $16.99. But the package only contained the unautographed cd.

No, because although I never got an email from them telling me they couldn't fulfill the order, I was wondering if they sent it out and it got caught in my spam filter or something. If so, maybe they felt my silence was their permission to send just the CD. I don't know . . . I guess I'll email.

Hi!
Newbury contacted me-after I emailed them about what was going on and they said they had a VERY limited amount of signed books- way less than they originally wanted- so only certain people received them. Dont know if that was determined on a first come first serve basis or what. But- my CD came- no book.
