Thanks for the heads up... Too bad you can't listen if you aren't in the US!! I would have recorded it.

Anyone planning on recording this? Aside from that, I hope they put something up to listen too on their site.

Thanks ChiliD for the heads up.

Can someone tell how to record it?

Can I use my computer?

Do I have to have specialized software?

(Otherwise it's me with a cassette tape in an old boombox....which can work...but I don't know how the hell I can share it with the rest of you guys.)

does this mean he will be IN Boulder??????????????

(Lauren is trying to figure out if she can skip her son's nap and haul him to Boulder and try to see Lindsey...)

forgot- Betsy to answer your question - if he's performing LIVE in Studio C- it will be released most likely for the KBCO Studio C Cds that come out each winter (I have a lot of them- they are special editions, you have to wait in line for HOURS to get them, blah blah and are a mix of artists that perform live in the Studio during the year) - Stevie's been on them a few times. I am surprised LB didn't wait until his Sept date here in Denver to do this though but am pleased either way and hope he will be on the CD!

Betsy

^^^

Geez, never thought of that. S'pose it's gonna be a radio/telephone interview with his songs played inbetween?

Lauren
08-07-2008, 10:58 PM
it doesn't say so I am not sure. I don't want to make the drive if he's not there and not sure if I can wait around with a 2 year old outside like a groupie- LOL!

however I will bet the song will be on the CD which we can get in CO easily and can burn for anyone that wants the song if they can't get a CD. I wonder what he'll do?

Lauren

i was re-reading the KBCO email and it doesn't say "performing live" just performing so I am not sure - I hope it's live cause the sound in Studio C is AMAZING!

Peestie

How else can you perform? Surely they wouldn't just play some of his songs? Do artists usually play live on these Studio C things?

Anyone able to record this for those of us who are outside the US?

Darn, I wish I was in Boulder and not Denver - i would have gone to try to sneak a peek! Anyone in that area get a chance?

It was neat listening to him talk about his kids and wife helping to write the songs and the FM tour next year, etc.

Thanks for the video screenshot Christy- he looks great! I was LOL at how long it took him to "get ready" for each song!

Well, he said something about Mick and Stevie being upset. But I don't know if they were upset with Sheryl or upset with him or what the deal was on that. I just heard, "I think Mick and Stevie were upset."

Then, he said that Sheryl spoke out of turn and he doesn't know why she chose to announce she was touring with FM. That was not how news to that effect was supposed to come out. He said that they continued to talk about her working with FM and, to Shery's credit, she realized it was a big commitment and she separated herself from it. He said, actually it turned out to be a good thing, because it got him and Stevie talking again and talking about what they wanted for the four of them and how they could make it happen.

It's up On Demand! Pretty wonderful. Time Precious Time had some lovely (heartstring)strumming; I look forward to hearing it on the album!

Surprised to hear that when he left the band after Say YOu Will, he said he would need three years to release an album, tour, live album, another solo album, and tour. That's an intense three-year plan. I figure he meant: "I will do with Gift of Screws what I please." But it's interesting that he knew it would lead to two solo albums. Do you think it's because he also wanted to be able to use the time to get back to writing new stuff? Anyway, I wish the interviewer had probed that answer more.

I Dont like that version of Time Precious Time. Its far too over engineered, there is no need for half of that guitar work.
I would say my ears and head would get sore if I had to listen to it over and over.

In contrast I could listen to the album version od DYMM over and over again. I think its really up there with the best of Lindsey's "pop" efforts

How's it over engineered? It's only got some delay on the guitar and that's it. Do you mean the guitar playing itself is over engineered?

I like it, apart from the fact that during the first chorus it sounds like he makes a bit of a mess of the guitar. It's a pretty striking song. I can't wait to hear the studio version of it.

I'm listening to Did You Miss Me right now... why can't he produce his albums to sound more like his live performances? This rendition totally nailed the essence of the subject matter of this song, IMO. His albums are often SO overproduced to the point they lose their own way. The crazy quasi digitized vocals and stuff just totally distract from what he's trying to get across.

I'm just trying to say that the silly digi vocals and overproduction of some of his work hides the raw talent Lindsey actually is. The overproduction also distracts away from the point of some of his songs, the subject matter of what he's singing about... you're focusing more on the production vs the meat and potatoes of what it's actually about. Just my humble two cents!

Lindsey is just doing what he feels a song needs, wants and deserves...nothing more, nothing less.

Granted you are entitled to your opinion, but just try to see through the "distractions" from time to time and the raw talent will seep through like delicious warm chocolate.

Sigh. Listening to this reminds me of why I love Lindsey so much! Terrific performance of Did You Miss Me.

Time Precious Time seems very difficult to perform live. It was ambitious of him to attempt it. His vocal struggled a bit as a result, but you can hardly blame him. Focusing on its musicality - I like the verses better than the chorus where the "Time Precious Time" seems a little too repetitive and a bit out of rhythm with the playing (deliberate or the result of it being done live?), but I find the guitar part exciting throughout. He puts a lot of emotion into the lyrics - he really sells them as being heartfelt.

louielouie2000 - I totally agree with you regarding overproduction. I've always felt that way whenever he chooses to make everything sound unnatural with his production.

I no longer connect with him because of that.

My basic thought on production is that it should not sound produced, but sound as natural as possible, and that you should be shooting to capture the raw energy that would be produced by playing a track live. I don't hear that from him lately. Too many vocal contrails and weird reverbs in the last two albums with wheezy vocals. It would have been better to do a short reverb for the vocals on most of these tracks. Sure everyone does it, but there's a reason.

John Run
08-18-2008, 11:55 AM
I don't necessarily think that studio production has to always be as close to the live sound as possible. Lindsey has always tended to produce things in the studio that could not be completely reproduced live, at least not without an army of musicians and singers. I don't mind that. A beautifully constructed song in the studio and then a more raw, simple version of that song live is pretty cool for me.

Now as many of my posts of have alluded to; the choices Lindsey made regarding production and engineering choices on Say You Will and Under The Skin did leave me kind of cold. Regarding vocals; too much distortion, effects, whispering and not enough singing.

Did You Miss Me does work for me. Right now, I like it. It has an updated Law and Order/Mirage sound that I am enjoying.

Too many vocal contrails and weird reverbs in the last two albums with wheezy vocals.Yes, it's his aesthetic choices -- his conceptions -- that repel me. Gielgud once said about Olivier that, while he (Gielgud) typically admired Olivier's execution, he often didn't care for his conception. I feel the same way about LB's recordings & orchestration from the '90s to the present (which I admit covers wide territory).

I've also heard & read about changing styles of mastering & compression in today's recordings, which create a sort of airless, forced gain. When I play SAY YOU WILL in any of my CD players (none of which is high end), the effect on my hearing is akin to being underwater: the balance & instrument delineation I expect (& loved in Fleetwood Mac albums of the '70s & early '80s) isn't there -- or if it's there, my various pieces of equipment don't reproduce it accurately. When you listen to concert recording these days, you can hear that something has changed in terms of both the technology & the desired conception. Listen to the Fleetwood Mac concert in Irvine that was recorded for the Westwood One Superstars Rock Concert radio show: the sound field is stuffed full, & even a subdued acoustic number doesn't breathe. It's like listening to a homemade channel separation mix off a DVD-Audio player.

The effect is so severe in my case that I haven't liked the sound of any Mac-related project since TANGO (although Christine's last album -- which Dashut worked on, I think -- had none of these aural blemishes).

If you go to any of the audio recording forums you'll see plenty of people (mostly professionals) complaining about this. That's why I'm looking forward to the vinyl/CD release which has a different master to the standard CD product. It calls it "uncompressed" but I'd be shocked if it really was uncompressed. What they probably mean is "less compressed" but considering just how compressed many modern CDs are it could still be very compressed.
