I think the only person who has covered Christines Songbird was Eva cassidy and my god I have to say that her version is the best ever! So beautiful!!

Worse song IMO was the Dixie Hicks 'Landslide"!!!

The worst Fleetwood Mac cover ever was Elton John's version of Don't Stop! I think I have to agree that the best cover was Eva Cassidy's Songbird.

That Legacy album was a mess wasn't it! I forgot all about Duncan Sheiks Songbird. I have to say I did like Sister Hazels Gold Dust Woman. I thought it was really cool that they added the little bit of Rhiannon at the end.

BEST cover....Jewel singing "You Making Loving Fun"

WORST cover...Cyndi Lauper singing "You Make Loving Fun" (and usually I like Cyndi..but she butchers this song!)

Worst Cover: Some dork on American idol singing Go Your Own Way.

Best: I Don't Want To Know (Goo Goo Dolls) only one that I feel is actually better then the original.

Worst: A lot suck but I got to go with the Elton John Don't Stop Band Wagon.

I have got to say that I really love Matchbox Twenty's NGBA.

I'm not saying it's better than the original or anything, but I'm saying that it has the alienated tone of someone who really is never going back.

Lindsey sings it a different way. In fact, he defines the song (as finding joy in love after thinking you never would again) in a manner that is exactly the opposite of what I think the song is about on its own. So, when he sings it he interprets it one way and Matchbox's version is on the other side of the spectrum. I really enjoy the different approach they bring to it. But I admit that I like Rob Thomas' voice anyway. So, he can draw me in rather easily.

Best: Faster Tiger's version of The Chain. They took the song, kept everything that made it so unique but also put their own personal take on it.

Worst: Just about every other cover I've heard.

I hate the Go Your Own Way cover by Wilson Phillips. It's so...slow and kind of annoys me.

I think the Dixie Chicks version of Landslide is very nice. Very true to the original, but I really, really dig Natalie Maines' voice on it for some reason.

I like Hole's GDW. But I am one of the few that like Courtney. It wasn't a true rendition of the song, but Clove's twisted take on it.
The worst imo is WP, GYOW. I can't stand them. I also love Corgin & the Pumpkins, but was never way smitten w/ his Landslide.

DITTO!

I usually like most covers (and allow a whole acreage of leeway for the others)...even the Patron Saints Of Pop album has some, well, let's say "interesting" takes on some songs, but I wouldn't fling the dung on 'em. ;)

Elton's "Don't Stop" isn't as good as I would have expected, but I wouldn't consider it "awful", either. Ditto with Cyndi Lauper's "You Make Loving Fun".

KC & The Sunshine Band's version of "Don't Stop" is pretty good (and really don't care for them as a band)

The only "bad" version of "Oh Well" I've heard is by Kenny Wayne Shepard...somebody should've taken a sledgehammer to his fingers for that one.

The Melvins do a really cool cover of "Green Manalishi".

Leo Kottke does an awesome cover of "World Turning".

Dennis Brown (RIP) reggae'd out a laid back version of "Black Magic Woman".

Moody Blues guitarist Justin Hayward does a very Moody Blues-ish version of "Man Of The World".

The Pointer Sisters (!?!?!?) did a killer version of "Hypnotized".

Annie McLoone (ex-Walter Egan band'er) did a great cover of Christine's "Spare Me A Little Of Your Love"

And, without a doubt, Santana's version of "Black Magic Woman" is the most LUCRATIVE cover of a Fleetwood Mac song ever.

I think the only person who has covered Christines Songbird was Eva cassidy and my god I have to say that her version is the best ever! So beautiful!!

Ummmm...no. There've been a bunch of "Songbird" covers:

Willie Nelson's being one of the more recent.

Rita Coolidge also covered it on her Love Me Again album from 1978...so hers is one of the first covers of the song.

In between those two have been numerous others. I would consider Eva's to be the best of 'em all...even give it a slight edge over Christine's own, as well.

That one is my favorite tune too. I liked how they blended it with "The Chain" at the end. That piano solo rocks! I mean, is there a BAD Matchbox Twenty song?

Yeah, I quickly learned that since starting this thread, I had no idea so many FM's songs have been covered.

Man, I think Eva cassidys version of SB is the only cover that could bring a grown man to tears. Damn, what emotion she brings to that song! Very moving.

I'd be curious to know what Christine thought of her cover---no doubt proud I would say!

[I haven't heard the cover, but I already resent the review. Lyndsey, eh, didn't just record the song, did he?]

Drowned in Sound review of Darren Haymen album:

http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/3756778

The other three see Hayman perform his own unique versions of Connie Francis standard 'V.A.C.A.T.I.O.N.' and, perhaps more impressively, the jaunty 'Holiday Road', previously recorded by Fleetwood Mac's Lyndsey Buckingham but perhaps better known as the theme from National Lampoon's Vacation flick, along with Chas and Dave's 'Margate', which compares the run-down Kent resort to the Costa Brava and naturally beats it hands down.

I would go with Judas Priest's version of the Green Manalishi. Most metal heads think that Priest wrote that song. When they hear it was a Fleetwood Mac song they start scratching their heads.

Not sure about the worse Fleetwood Mac cover.

Although it doesn't count, Rita also did a killer cover of Only You Know And I Know. Of course, she was on both D&B versions. While she wasn't on Mason's version, she was on Alone Together...For that matter, Joe Cocker's "cover" (hard to call it a cover, as it is so different from the original AND features Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi) of Feelin' Alright is legendary, to the point where Mason has done that version ever since he's been a solo artist.

I know this is a BN song -- but, I think this is a killer version of Crying in the Night. I think David turned me on to it way back when.

On edit -- I do not have it (and I do not know where it is damnitalltohell  )

David do you have a copy of it? It was by, I think, Firefall.

Yes, it was Firefall who covered "Crying In The Night".

Country singer Rusty Weir covered two Buckingham Nicks songs AND a Stevie Nicks song on his 1976 Stacked Deck album. (he sounds like a cross between Waylon Jennings & John Stewart).

He covered "Lola (My Love)", "Don't Let Me Down Again" AND Stevie's "Think About It"...which didn't have the middle bridge as was on her Bella Donna version.

You can thank the amazing arranging talents of Leon Russell for making Joe Cocker's the "definitive version" of "Feelin' Alright".

It's like Clapton's cover of Dylan's "Knocking On Heaven's Door", ever since, Dylan's done the song with that pseudo-reggae feel.

Tori Amos has covered a few FM songs in concert. The one's I know of are Dreams, Songbird, Landlside.

I also ahve to say that the Legacy Album just sucks. I wish someone would do a great covers album that actually does justice to the band. I could see Emmylou Harris or even Sarah Maclachlan covering Songbird. How about Melissa Etheridge doing Gold Dust Woman. She has that husky voice. I think the problem is allot of the songs have a personal meaning to the specific band members so It seems hard for other artists to capture that in a cover version of the song.

To each their own...other than Elton's version of "Don't Stop" and that God-awful trainwreck that is Duncan Sheik's "Songbird", the rest are pretty good, I think; although I HAVE heard better covers of a couple of songs ("The Chain" & "You Make Loving Fun" specifically)

The best cover of "Oh Well" has to be Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' from their 30th Anniversary concert. Not only is it played note perfect, but Mike Campbell's two guitar solos are blistering. You can tell the Heartbreakers (or back when they were Mudcrutch) loved the Peter Green era of the band.

The worst Fleetwood Mac cover ever was Elton John's version of Don't Stop! I think I have to agree that the best cover was Eva Cassidy's Songbird.

Yes I agree! Love Elton John, love the song. How did he manage to make it sound like sh*t??? Has anyone checked out Camper Van Beethoven's version of the entire Tusk album?? Not sure how to describe it. As they mention in the liner notes...they were on tour in the early 2000's and became fascinated with the album...and then just started recording the songs. The Stevie songs were the most questionable (worst?) ones. One of the band members was quoted as saying "No one wanted to take on her songs."

There is also "Fleetwood Mac -- The Patron Saints of Pop -An Apostilary Homage." Each song is done by an individual, equally obscure garage-like grunge band. An interesting song selection:
The Chain
Dust
I Know I'm Not Wrong
Tusk
Walk A Thin Line
Gypsy
Go Your Own Way
Hypnotized
Never Make Me Cry
Gold Dust Woman
That' All For Everyone
Albatross

Worst Cover: Some dork on American idol singing Go Your Own Way.

my thoughts exactly. campers version of tusk is different and unique, but also in line with the themes and musical identities that made tusk so special.

of course the american idol debauchery of go your own way is the worst. my TV was lucky it lasted through the broadcast....

I don't have a favorite Mac cover though I would choose "Walk A Thin Line" from The Visitor, but that doesn't really count -- so I'll try to check out Blake Babies' version. Songbird is pretty though, undoubtedly. I'd like to hear Iris DeMent do a Mac song!

Hearing The Visitor many times recently got me to thinking: Mick should release an Island Rumours Band album; would offer the chance for some nice "covers" there.
