Last week's Monday Dave Stewart visited "The Bob & Tom Show", a US comedy radio program, on which he sang and played "Here Comes The Rain Again", "Don't Come Around Here No More" and "Lily Was Here" with an acoustic guitar to a backing track live in the studio plus improvised a "Bob & Tom Blues" towards the end of his more than an hour visit. In between he told some news and personal stories.

Besides how it is working with Ringo Starr, The the old and new Traveling Wilburys and Annie Lennox, living with George Harrison and how experiences with his French teacher formed his sexual life, he explained that unfortunately his French solo album with singer-songwriter Carla Bruni is on hold for longer after she's even more busy now being president Sarkozy's wife. Regarding "Off The Record" he revealed that four different artists are talked with for future specials. Then Dave gave a first reading from his Songbook book about how "Don't Come Around Here No More" came around:

When he first met Stevie Nicks (who just split up with Joe Walsh as he found out later) in 1984, she invited him to a private party consisting of not much more than "marching powder" and three more women. The song emerged when she asked Dave the next morning to better leave her house quickly after she just had sex with him (twice according to her) which was followed by some explosive situations involving Jimmy Iovine and Tom Petty. So much for a first appetizer, don't worry, not all stories are as delicate - more about the Songbook book here soon. To download the Bob & Tom radio show (mp3, 57 min with Dave), you need to become a "VIP member" (cheapest: $6.95 for 1 month membership) and sign up here. https://members.premiereinteractive.com/pcd/document?ikey=99987IGTZ

Huh? I don't get it.... So is he saying Stevie believed she had sex with him two times or they really did have sex two times or at all for that matter? And what sort of explosive situations...about what??

I wonder if Stevie knows that song is about her as she sings backup on it. Considering how she complains about Lindsey saying she was "shacking up" in GYOW, and how she really wasn't shacking up with anyone, I would think she would be pretty offended by his account of this song.

Stevie doesn't sing back-up on that song. Tom Petty said he used Stevie's back-up singers on a day that Stevie was not in the studio.

I went to the website of this radio show, and they have shows available for download, but you have to buy a membership. I would like to hear if he gives details on the "explosive situations". Incidentally, this is the second time that some cad has gone on the radio to talk about Stevie's private matters. Apparently, Joe Walsh did the same thing on Howard Stern.

Well, I guess you could toss Don Henley into the mix as well in terms of "cads" who have aired out private matters. But Joe was an absolute raving drunk that Stern took advantage of at the time. Joe's cleaned up and been sober for quite a while. Stevie & Joe have managed to rebuild fences since that time. Stevie is "Sister Honey." 'Can we still be friends? The answer's always yes.' That's a Stevie Nicks trait that amazes me to this day.

I disagree with judging a potential lover/relationship on looks alone and actually consider Dave Stewart to be attractive - he certainly is a lovely guy, not to mention immensely talented - but if you're wondering about a physical attraction, legend has it that the guy is rather well built downstairs if you get my drift. Remember, he and one of the most incredible women in the world, Annie Lennox, were an item for quite a few years.

I remenber reading in 84 in the star magizine that Dave Steward hung out at
Stevie's house and it was a wild party. So you can only imagine what transpired,
but I think cocaine was talked about in a round about way. Also I listened
to the Joe Walsh interview with Howard Stern, the interview was shortly after
they perform for Clinton. He said some mean things. Howard wasn't nice either.
One question he asked Joe was, when you did Stevie was she fat? And yes he
said road F - - K, I got annoyed and stopped listening. I can't stand Howard,
however I wanted to hear the interview and what was said about Stevie. How she
can forgive him amazes me. But it is her life and I am sure we all made mistakes.

I think on the Tom Petty documentary they talk about the origins of this song. It was started by Stevie and I think some vocals were laid down but Stevie ended up not finishing it so Dave took over. I think those are Stevie's vocals on the song.

Maybe Stevie figures that they were all effed up on drugs and once it's out in the public what is she going to do? How many guys would she have to be hating on? lol

I remember Henley. I think I called him an enormous ass the last time we talked about it here years ago. I still think he's an enormous ass, no matter whether Stevie does or not. 'Tough mama' may have a little trouble coming to grips with the fact that these guys are asses. That would seem to indicate a humungous lack of judgement. Pride maybe? The power of illusion?

Or just being coked out and banging. I dunno which. But none of them are too pretty to look back on.

I like Don Henley's music and the Eagles as well....I don't agree with all the things they did back in the 'day'....just read Don Felders 'Heaven & Hell' book thats out.....very very interesting read....I'm up the the part of Hotel California....He only mentions Stevie a couple of times at this point in the book.....that she and Don (Henley) had dated on and off for 2 years.....he stated that he is friends with her (that is Don Felder) to this day....and it is seperate from her relationship she has with Don Henley....he said he never spoke about Stevie with Don H either.....You may not like Stevie's relationships but well there hers.....she has to deal with them...not us.....and well if she can be 'friends' with all the the past men in her life so be it.....it is her life after all.....and what does being mad all the time and pissed off accomplish really. It really only hurts 'you' in the long run really not them......just some thoughts.....anyway......

You don't have to go around 'pissed off' all the time, but I don't think she should be looking through rose-colored glasses and calling some of these guys friends. I don't think a 'friend' goes on to say you were a road f**k, or a friend blabs to a national magazine about an abortion. Who would keep guys like that in their life? And why? And write songs praising them. It smacks a little of twisted thinking. How about 'don't go away mad, just go away'?

Seems she was angrier at Lindsey for a long time for a LOT less. Humph.

Crazy.

You bring up an interesting dilemma, Luke, but it might be a faulty dilemma. I don't know that Stevie likes Joe better than Bob Welch, but she certainly spent more time with Joe in the past, calling him one of the "great loves in herlife," the only one that she would have given up everything for; but after their falling out, she didn't LIKE Joe for a long time. (although perhaps there's was some of that "tiny spark" somewhere in her heart for him; past relationships are so complicated!)

But regarding the incident that Bob brought up on The Rumours board recently, Bob has indicated he isn't absolutely certain Stevie even got his message. Stevie has helped Bob out on several occassions professionally, according to his Q&A here on The Penguin. Bob was already well known, building on his own name and career in his own right after leaving Fleetwood Mac. Stevie was a mega name in the biz at that time, even according to Bob, within and outside of Fleetwood Mac. I don't know if Bob ever offered help to Stevie on her albums or touring, as he had his own stuff going on. Joe was an opening act for Stevie.

Dragging other Eagles back in for a moment- Don Henley & Stevie have certainly collaborated over the years- and Don is on three of Stevie's songs that I can think of (Leather & Lace, Highway Man, Reconsider Me)--I don't know of any Joe musical collaboration with Stevie. Anyone see them on stage together at all during The Wild Heart tour for anything LIVE? And former Eagle Bernie Leadon helped Stevie out with acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, and background vocals.

I don't know of any Joe Walsh musical collaboration with Stevie.

I think he might be the one playing guitar on One More Big Time R&R Star. And on one of her tours, possibly TOSOTM, before performing Has Anyone Ever Written... she would say "this is a song about a real scary man in this scary world of rock and roll."

Joe definitely wasn't playing on any of The Other Side Of The Mirror tours with Stevie. They already had their big falling out by then (Stevie's done an interview about that), and, TOSOTM album's "Long Way To Go" was a not so nice song (according to Stevie) written about Joe Walsh.

I haven't heard about Joe on One More Big Time Rock And Roll Star before- anyone else know about that one?

I read Don Felder's book too and what he said about Walsh was rather illuminating and helped to explain (at least to me) how he could say some damn nasty things about Stevie on Stern's show. Anyway, Felder was closer to Walsh than the other band members and they hung out together, taking fishing trips, etc. with one another off-the-road (along with one of the guys from Chicago). When Walsh was at the height of his addictions, marriage falling apart, in danger of being fired from the Eagles, etc., Felder personally drove Walsh to rehab.

Yet when Henley & Frey fired Felder, Joe Walsh just stopped talking to him altogether. Now there may be a bit more to that story than is being told by Felder and maybe there were some things Felder did to end that friendship other than the fallout with Henley & Frey, but Felder seemed genuinally hurt that after being there for Walsh during his addictions and recovery (their daughters were also close friends), and when he most needed Walsh's friendship, Walsh vanished.

So that for me was a little insight into Walsh's "character" or lack therein.

But Dave Stewart???? Yeah it would ahve taken a lot of drugs for me to have done him. LOL.

I think he might be the one playing guitar on One More Big Time R&R Star. Don't say "I think." You didn't reach this conclusion on your own. Say "In the ENCHANTED booklet, there's a guitar credit for Joe Walsh on this song." Accuracy & clarity keep me happy.

I've been popping in every now and again but things have been crazy busy so I've not been able to post as often as I'd like but I HAVE to add MO to this: Joe Walsh is a
DICK - plain and simple. He's out for himself and will throw anyone under the bus if it means saving his own hairy ass or making himself look good in any way. He's a two-faced back-stabbing kiss-and-tell LOSER whose mental capacities are beyond repair due to his brain being saturated in alcohol for so long. Anything he says needs to be taken at face-value as he's also a NOTORIOUS LIAR!

Here are some pretty interesting quotes from Stevie regarding her relationship with Joe Walsh:

assuming this one is about Joe....
Reflections from the Other Side of the Mirror - 1989
(About 'Long Way to Go')"This song was not written in such a nice way. This happened to be an experience that I had with somebody that I did very much love who we had broken up a long time before, a year before, and I had just finished Rock a Little. And I walked into my house with Rock a Little under my arm and the phone rang and it was him. And he wanted me to drive two and a half hours to wherever it was that he lived. And I was very tired and it was very late, like three-thirty, four in the morning. I turned around to somebody that was living in my house at that time and I said 'Should I go?' And they said, 'Well, it's a pretty long way to say goodbye...again. Stevie, it has taken you an awfully long time to get over this. Do you want to go down and start it up again?' So I went back and forth in my mind and finally he said 'I'm sending a limousine for you.' And I said 'Alright.' And so, chump that I was, I got in the car and drove down there and played the record for him and he kept it, which I will never forgive him for. And I think the last thing that I did say to him was 'You know, it's a real long way to come to say goodbye again. I thought we already did that. Have fun, tell the world,' which basically means words you don't say over the radio. 'Goodbye, forever this time. Don't ever call me again.' And he put me in the car, and I was hysterical, in tears, and I cried all the way home. And I said to myself, I will never, ever, ever put myself in that position again. Nobody will ever do that to me again. As much as I loved him, I will never let that happen again."

BBC Interview with Nicky Horne ~ August 27, 1991
(about her relationship with Joe Walsh)"We went on the Wild Heart tour and after about a week I went into a bar and he [Joe] was sitting there and he just looked up at me and that was it. It was love at first site. You should have seen me, I went and yelled at people about his sound checks. I bought him incredible silk shirts and leg warmers that he wore! I took really good care of him and I think that is what scared Joe the most because I was too in tune with him and he was too used to being out of tune with everyone. I really understood him well. I was really hard nosed about him. If my house was full and Joe called I would tell everyone to get out.

BBC Interview with Nicky Horne ~ August 27, 1991
(about why she broke up with Joe Walsh)"What happened at the end was I was getting ready to cut two songs with Waddy Wachtel producing and we only had two nights to rehearse and Joe had been off in New Zealand or something and he came down about one or two in the mornting or something and he was real good friends with everyone in my band. That would have been fine any other night but I was really angry with what Joe had done because he completely screwed up that session. He just had everyone dying laughing because he just tells a hundred jokes and everyone was just rolling in the floor laughing and I was going “this is not fair” because he is not being sensitive at all to this whole situation and “you know I would give up anything for you, even my dammed career for you if he was serious enough." I had a limousine and I asked Joe if he wanted to take me home or come home with him and he said, “well, I didn’t tell you this but I’m leaving for Australia like tonight and I have to pack so I’m just going to get a ride home with Waddy” and I said “ok” and started walking towards the door and I turned around and said “Joe I don’t like where this relationship is going cause it’s not going anywhere and I don’t want to do it anymore.” And I started walking towards the door and he said “well you know, if you walk out the door, you basically cease to exist.” And I just din't stop walking."

BBC Interview with Nicky Horne ~August 27, 1991
(about whether she still loves Joe Walsh)"I will always love Joe. It will probably be hard for me to find somebody else that ever ever made me feel like Joe did. [After the breakup] At that point I just thought it was over, I thought that I would just be an old maid and just live with a bunch of dogs and cats in the mountains somewhere and that would be it because there just wouldn't be anything else for me."

Is he? That would make more sense. There's so much kiss and tell that could be done in rock and roll and you rarely hear any of it. I think that is a good policy, as much as I love hearing some of the details, it's just too much for those involved.

I do not think Dave is horrible looking either. Someone doesn't have to be gorgeous to be attractive.

Actually, in Petty's Runnin' Down A Dream documentary, Jimmy Iovine said that Dave Stewart wrote the music and he(Jimmy) wanted Stevie to write the lyrics to it and record it for one of her albums. She wouldn't or couldn't find the words, or wanted Tom petty to write the words. Petty wrote the lyrics, liked it, kept it, and it turned up on Southern Accents. It's such a good song!

Does anyone know if the video of this song is some kind of reference to Stevie, the "Alice" character?Nope. The video characters are a homage to Lewis Carroll.

I've always liked this video & the song. Musically, of course, it's unlike any other Heartbreakers recording -- which makes sense considering that the Englishman Dave Stewart composed it. I particularly love the rococo synthesizer riff, & I'd like to know whether Stewart or Benmont Tench composed it.

Here's a 10 minute segment of Rockline that Dave Stewart was on not long ago.... He describes how the song "Don't Come Around Here No More" came about - including his meeting with Stevie and spending the night at her house, the recording of the song, Jimmy Iovine, Tom Petty & the video...

Hey guys, take it easy on Joe Walsh! None of us know him personally. He seems like a pretty decent guy to me. All that trash talk about Stevie was done when he was having major problems and drunk 24/7.

Obviously, Stevie is cool with him now - how many interviews recently has she done gushing about him as the love of her life ? So I say, who are we to question her judgment in this matter? She knows more about Joe than any of us ever will.

Same for Don Henley. They are obviously very close nowadays. And why shouldn't they be close? Yeah, he blabbed about the abortion, but what else has he really done? I've never read him dissing her in any other article or interview - correct me if I'm wrong. Why judge him so harshly? You guys should've have seen how sweet he was with her at AHI 2005, when her father was so ill (he died a few days later). Don came down with her and stood by her when she did the meet'n'greet, even though he knew we were all there for Stevie. Stevie also says he comforted her when 9/11 occurred. He seems like a very good friend to her and I for one say, let's give the man some credit.

Some people are able to be intimate with another based on attributes not physical.

Often it's a matter of convenience. It's very reasonable for very famous people to co-mingle by virtue of the fact that typically normal situations to meet people are not available to them. They don't, and often can't operate in normal societal circles.
That said, I do have a friend who, years ago, hooked up (from online) with a Madonna's brother, and had no idea who he was at first! Granted, Madonna's brother is no Chris Nicks!!:]

Howard Stern always wants to find out about Stevie's love life. He did
that to Joe Walsh also. I bet Stevie will never be on his show. My guess would
be Stevie just blows them off. They should be thankful she went with him...
Also I heard he was gay, after his marriage to that girl from bananna.....

Dave Stewart was also on Howard Stern today. I only got to hear a few minutes of the interview so I cant say what he said about Stevie but if you go to the Howard Stern Site and select the Rundown it does say that he said he bedded Stevie Nicks. I hope they rerun this show again cuz I want to hear what else he said about her. He is a freak though, talking about his toys that he sells and that stuff he has done, LOL!

Al C. heard the show and posted the following on the Enchanted list:

Dave Stewart of the Eurythemics was on Howard Stern this morning and was talking about his affair with Stevie. He says that they hooked up right after she split with Joe Walsh. He says he was at a party at her house, she was wired out of her mind. He crashed in a room, woke up and she was trying on Victorian nightgowns. Next thing he knew they were in bed together. They went at it twice and then the next morning Joe Walsh showed up and Stevie told him "don't come around here no more!". Dave says that he talked to Stevie about putting the details in his book and she said it was ok. He originally was going to leave some details out, but Stevie told him to tell the whole story. He said the story continues on as to how the song "Don't Come Around Here No More" got written and how Tom got it and he said it gets interesting. He said that he is still friends with Stevie, Tom and Joe Walsh. Dave's book, "The Dave Stewart Songbook, The Stories Behind The Songs ~ Vol. 1" comes out next week.

So, Stevie ok'd this?

I think it's funny that she was trying on Victorian night gowns. In that recent interview she did just this year, she said all of her boyfriends love her beautiful lingerie and I was thinking -- um, mostly they love when you take the lingerie off! I mean, I love peignoir sets myself, but I don't think you'll ever hear a man say, "oh, I want to see you in 200 pounds of lace."

I dunno . . . I don't have much of a comment on this. My personal opinion ~ I think it's pretty sad for men to kiss and tell. I know that sounds sexist but it's one thing for a woman to whisper among her girlfriends but for a guy . . . it just rubs me the wrong way. Tho I do think it's in bad taste for anyone to do it so publicaly, but he's obviously trying to sell his book . . . Don't Believe Everything You Hear and Read.

I think it's sleazy, but I don't just think that because he's a man. I didn't think Barbara Walters was right when she did it either. But this is worse, because Stewart's giving sexual details and I think Barbara had a little bit more decorum. She's not saying how many times she and Edward Brooke rolled around on the floor of the Capitol.

To his credit...he consulted with Stevie before it went to print. If she gave him approval to tell the story, then why shoud it bother you. I persoanlly love hearing these stories; they provide a glimpse of the personal side of their lives that we never hear the details of. Sell a book? Regarding the Stevie story, he didn't make anything up or cast judgement on Stevie for the sake of exploitation...he was simply writing about various experiences he had when he first came to LA. That's it! Sexist? Hardly!

Keep in mind his book is about the stories behind the songs he's written. "Don't Come Around Here No More" is one of his bigger hits he's written. How do you tell the story without talking about Stevie and what inspired it? He says she's ok with it, and he's still friends with her.
By the way, later in the interview he was asked about his relationship with Annie Lennox and why they didn't stay together. He said that for women in the business it's tough, he said that Stevie made the choice to have men in and out of her life rather than tie herself down with kids and a family.

This is how the Howard Stern "rundown" summarizes Stewart's comments on the website. It won't link to the exact page. You have to look at the "view show" segment and put in September 4.

http://www.howardstern.com/

Howard asked Dave about his relationship with Annie Lennox, and Dave was forthright: “We lived together for four years and broke up and then wrote 250 songs about it.” Dave said Annie was not, as you'd expect, crazy in bed – though he was: “[My friends and I used to] just sort of touch our penises together...it's hard to explain if you've never, well, you've never experienced it.” Dave added that the sick act wasn't the dirtiest thing he's ever done – he's also bedded Stevie Nicks.

I wouldn't want to hear that anyone from Fleetwood Mac was ever a guest on Stern's show.

Some of the prominent people I respect a great deal (like Jon Stewart) love Howard Stern, even consider him a genius, much to my chagrin. No matter who Howard "really is" many of his listeners lack a deeper level of understanding or a higher level of discernment. He may know better, but an alarming number of them do not and I feel he perpetuates attitudes that trouble me deeply.

So, LB may be a Stern fan, but I sure hope he never appears on the show. Michele

If Lindsey ever appeared on the Stern and his crew would not only respect him, they likely would worship him. Of course there would be a little prodding about his past, but it's not like Lindsey would not expect it. I'm sure he would handle it with humor...and answer what he wants to answer. We would get an interview from Lindsey like never before or ever!! I see Martha Stewart in an entirely different light ever since she appeared on Howard's show. He brought out a side of her character she rarely shows -- she was completely real, humorous, unoffended by anything, honest and revealingly forthcoming...sometimes about very personal things. It broke down a lot of misconceptions I had about her. Not that I crave to hear about Lindsey's sex life in the 1970s...but if the question comes up, he may "shut it down", be vague, or be starkly candid. Regardless, these interviews are always done with an ultimate regard for the guest, along with an expected salacious humor rooted in deep respect.

Would you deny yourself the opportunity to listen to this never-to-happen interview, if it actually happened?

I wasn't dismissing Howard. Everyone is entitled to express themselves in the arts any way they see fit. I listened to Howard and his crew when they were on public radio. Even watched his televison show back in the 1990's. I was just bringing up the point that some of the Mac were on his show.

I wouldn't deny myself. I'd eagerly listen to the tape of Mick and the McVies on the show if I could, now that I know they did it. I bet it's hilarious.

You know, Colbert says that once in awhile people come up to him and they think he's serious. It's not clear to them that he's putting on an act. But I think that's true of less than 5% of Colbert's audience. With Howard, I think about 50% of the people who listen to him really hold the views expressed on the show that I find the rankest. So, I'm glad he's around. I've been seeing him since I was in college and he would appear on the Letterman show as a guest in the eighties. I believe in freedom of speech and don't like to have people like him censored. But when I like someone like Roger Ebert, David Duchovny, Conan O'Brien, Jon Stewart . . . I always feel disappointed when I find that they really look up to Stern's show.

Wine: Drop with a pop of celebrity

Yvonne Lorkin | Monday, May 28, 2012, Bay of Plenty Times
http://www.bayofplentytimes.co.nz/news/wine-drop-with-a-pop-of-celebrity/1392270/

Speaking of having your own label, if you're into celebrity shenanigans, everyone worth their ostrich skin handbag, Jimmy Choo's or Learjet appears to be getting in on the wine game.

Recently, Dave Stewart of 80s pop powerhouse the Eurythmics launched his own Aussie wine label and this week word hit the street that Ms Lady Lumps herself, Fergie of Black Eyed Peas fame (real name Stacey Ann Ferguson), has launched her own estate label Ferguson Crest from her vineyard in California's Santa Ynez valley.

"It's an investment. I'm investing in real estate," she told Forbes Life magazine. "Plus, my dad is going to have a great house," she said.

Her father, Pat Ferguson, is a horticulturalist and presumably will be looking after the vineyard.

Dave Stewart teamed with award-winning Australian winemakers Mollydooker to create his limited edition 2010 The Ringmaster General, a McLaren Vale Shiraz named after his solo album expected out in September.

Priced at US$125 ($162.95) a bottle, it comes gift boxed with a DVD documentary featuring Stewart and his collaborators, such as Stevie Nicks and Alison Krauss.

Drew Barrymore launched her Barrymore 2011 Pinot Grigio recently and apparently it's very good: "Crisp, fruity, dynamic and fun," according to her people.

Barrymore was quoted in Wine Spectator as saying, "I love wine, and it's always fun when you can do something in your work life that you love in your personal life".

Sceptics can suck on the fact that it won a gold medal at Le Challenge International du Vin, the largest international wine competition in France.

Francis Ford Coppola has been making wine for decades and Andrea Bocelli (Bocelli Family Wines), Dan Aykroyd, Sam Neill (Two Paddocks) and Antonio Banderas (Anta Banderas) have vaulted into viticulture.

Madonna's dad has a vineyard (Ciccone Vineyard in Michigan) and rumour has it Lady Gaga has ditched the quirky, dainty teacups and is looking to own her own vineyard in California's Sonoma County.

[This article agonizes over Dave and Annie's relationship, like some people do for Stevie and Lindsey. In fact, in the comments section, someone writes that Dave and Annie are the British version of Stevie and Lindsey. He frets about why he wasn't invited to Annie's wedding. I guess Stevie wasn't completely crazy when she said he was thinking of Annie like she thinks of Lindsey, for Everybody Loves You, etc. ]

How pop's most toxic love affair cast a shadow over SIX marriages: Have Eurythmics' Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart finally got each other out of their systems?

To maximise the glamour factor, rocker turned celebrity photographer Dave Stewart has chosen to hold his latest exhibition of pictures of his famous friends in the ultra-chic Sunset Marquis hotel in Hollywood.

Its walls are lined with his portraits of stars such as Mick Jagger, actress Demi Moore and singer Joss Stone.

But there is not a single picture of Annie Lennox, Stewart’s former partner in the Eurythmics and his one-time lover.

The 60-year-old Stewart tried to laugh off the omission by saying he would need a whole exhibition to house the multitude of pictures of his strikingly beautiful ex.

However, fans of the hugely successful Eighties band wonder if her absence is more to do with a bitter feud that has driven a wedge between the pair.

Indeed, Stewart let slip he did not receive an invitation to the singer’s wedding last September to South African gynaecologist Dr Mitch Besser. Guests included the actor Colin Firth and comedienne Ruby Wax.

Stewart was reported to have looked upset as he admitted: ‘I don’t even know where the wedding was. I’ll have to ask why wasn’t I invited. I certainly would have gone if she’d asked me.’

He added poignantly: ‘People always think of us as a couple, and yet we barely ever talk now.’

One explanation, offered to me by an executive at their former record company RCA, is that the love-hate relationship between the pair is such that Scots-born Lennox has vowed to stay away from her former boyfriend for fear he ‘causes a disturbance in her new marriage’.

Could it really be true that three-times married Annie, 58, who once claimed she and Stewart were so close they communicated by telepathy, thinks she can’t trust herself to be around him?

Certainly, those who know the two stars admitted to me that the relationship remains intense.

The man who discovered them, Rob Gold, a former head of Virgin Music, said: ‘Their relationship became almost too much and got claustrophobic. Annie’s head is in a completely different space now and it’s not like it was. She wants to move on.’

To do so, it seems, she has vowed to keep Stewart, also married three times, at arm’s length.

Their most recent fall-out is the latest twist in the fascinating tale of love and obsession that is at the heart of the relationship between pop’s most oddball duo.

In the more than 30 years since they stopped being lovers, it’s been blamed for the break-up of two of Lennox’s marriages and their bouts of depression. Despite the troubled relationship, there remains a special connection between them, which friends believe they have never really resolved.

They met in 1976, when Lennox was a waitress in Hampstead, North-West London.

She had moved from Aberdeen to study the flute at the Royal College of Music. But Lennox, who was brought up in a two-room tenement, sharing an outside lavatory with five other families, felt out of place among her well-off fellow students and quit before her finals.

According to legend, the eccentric Sunderland-born Stewart, who had run away to London at 16, walked into the restaurant where she worked, wearing a fur coat, spotted her and asked her to marry him.

At 24, he was already married — a brief union to a nurse.

He and Lennox immediately began an intense affair and formed a band called The Catch.

Rob Gold, their first producer, told me: ‘When I met them, they were living in this little room in Crouch End in North London.

‘My office was in Covent Garden and I had to lend Annie 10p to get back home because she didn’t have the money.

‘Dave was eccentric even then. He used to come to my house wearing a space helmet. My children thought he’d just landed!’

At that time, Stewart was already addicted to cocaine and amphetamines. He later admitted that at the height of his drug-taking he had LSD every day for a year.

Desperately thin and ill, he collapsed from a punctured lung in 1977. ‘Dave, Annie and I were in a London restaurant and all of a sudden he got short of breath and had to be rushed to hospital,’ says Gold. ‘It was touch and go whether he would pull through.’

Annie nursed him back to health and off drugs, and they formed The Tourists, getting a top-ten hit in 1979. But the group broke up acrimoniously a year later, leaving the couple having to repay £35,000 to their record company.

The stress sent Lennox into a trough of depression and anxiety. She suffered panic attacks and admitted having suicidal thoughts.

Later she said: ‘I would get palpitations and come out in cold sweats. You get such a rock-bottom feeling that either you might as well cut your own throat or you start thinking about your own self-preservation.

‘It was sheer hell and I never want to go through anything like that again. I was devastated by the traumas and dramas.’

Her four-year relationship with Stewart also fell victim to her breakdown and the pressures of working together. Nonetheless, they got back together and went on to form The Eurythmics the following year.

Their first album, In The Garden, flopped, but in 1983, Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) went platinum in Britain and gold in America.

Lennox became an instant sex symbol and The Eurythmics sold 75 million records worldwide. The pair earned £30 million each with hits such as Who’s That Girl?, There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart) and Thorn in My Side.

But with success came more angst. In the early Nineties, Stewart admitted experiencing ‘Paradise Syndrome’ — a psychological condition where sufferers become severely depressed because achieving great wealth and fame leaves them feeling there is nothing left to strive for.

He also became convinced that extra-terrestrials had invaded parts of his body, making him ill.

Once, he was admitted to hospital in Dumfries after he thought his head was swelling up. In an attempt to cool down, he rammed a champagne bucket full of ice on it, which became stuck fast.

Meanwhile, there was talk of blood-curdling rows between the pair, who would go weeks without talking to each other. It is no surprise that they disbanded The Eurythmics in 1990, though they did briefly reform nine years later.

Annie later admitted the trauma of the break-up threw her back into depression. But she went on to launch a solo career that has seen her win a record eight Brits, four Grammys and an Oscar for her song Into The West from the soundtrack of The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King.

However, her demons have never been too far away. Her 2003 album Bare was seen by fans as a cry for help. The last song, Oh God, features the lyrics: ‘Oh God, where are you now? I’m looking down at the abyss. You don’t exist.’

Lennox blamed her relationship with Stewart for the break-up of her first marriage to Hare Krishna monk Radha Raman, whom she met in 1984 after a concert in Stuttgart.

Three weeks later, they tied the knot before taking off to a tiny Swiss mountain village near a Krishna farm and temple.

The controlling Raman persuaded Lennox to give up meat, alcohol and coffee, and she enthused at the time: ‘Radha has changed my life. He taught me how to be happy. Before we met, I was terribly confused about what I wanted.’

Her parents, shipyard boilermaker Tom and cook Dorothy, were understandably worried.

Unsurprisingly, Dave Stewart, too, was vehemently against the odd union. Within weeks, Lennox realised she had made a huge mistake and a year later the marriage was over — but not before Raman allegedly demanded £100,000 to stop him publishing intimate photos of them together.

As for Stewart, the spectre of Lennox hung over his second marriage to Bananarama singer Siobhan Fahey in 1987. The couple had two sons, but divorced in 1996.

The relationship was probably not helped by Stewart insisting his former lover should attend the birth of one of the children, with the singer urging Fahey to ‘Push!’

At the same time, he was saying, rather tactlessly: ‘We have a passionate friendship. Annie and I can revive the element of sexual chemistry between us at any time.’

Some close to Lennox blamed her decision to reform The Eurythmics with Stewart in 1999 for her break-up, a year later, from husband number two, Israeli-born music and film producer Uri Fruchtmann. The couple married in 1988 and had two daughters, now 22 and 20.

Following his divorce from Fahey, Stewart went on to marry Dutch photographer Anoushka Fisz in 2001. They have two daughters, aged 13 and 11, and have lived in Los Angeles for the past eight years.

Lennox met third husband Dr Besser in 2009 after becoming involved in his charity, Mothers- 2Mothers, which helps HIV-infected children and their mothers.

The couple live between the singer’s £10 million townhouse in Notting Hill, West London, and South Africa.

But with six marriages between them, it remains to be seen if Stewart and Lennox have finally got each other out of their systems.

You raise a question that many of us have had, as we sat down to ponder Stevie's loves. We have all run into the same wall: There are more people than there is calendar time to accommodate them properly, as it were.

*Presumably* Stevie broke up with Jimmy before she married Kim Anderson.... she was working on The Wild Heart then and left Kim to go out on tour to promote the album. Joe Walsh was her opening act on that tour and that's when they hooked up.

And don't forget, when that whole Twilight affair thing happened with the actors and all and Stevie came out to defend the actress (Kristen Stewart?) for cheating, Stevie said that she herself had been in that position-- cheating on someone-- more than once, and each time SHE had been forgiven. So there's some of your overlap there.... oy.

This is how the Howard Stern "rundown" summarizes Stewart's comments on the website. It won't link to the exact page. You have to look at the "view show" segment and put in September 4.

“[My friends and I used to] just sort of touch our penises together...it's hard to explain if you've never, well, you've never experienced it.”

WHAT????
