I really like these 2 songs alot and I was wondering which one you prefer and why? I personally prefer Nightwatch, a little more mellow of a song which I enjoy. Also, Mr Welch, if you happen to read this thread please feel free to add your comments as well!

About the only song I can clearly remember FM playing at my first ever FM concert (Manchester Free Trade Hall, May 1973) was Nightwatch.

I still have a soft spot for the Penguin album because it was the first FM album I bought as soon as it was released. I had to save up my pocket money to do it!

GailYou know, it's a bit of an unusual album, but well worth the listen!

It's not a bad album. some of Christine's songs, given different production, could have been very good. Nightwatch and Did You Ever Love Me are my favourites.

It's just a shame Dave Walker was on it.

No one called Dave should be allowed to be in Fleetwood Mac

Tough call on this one...

On one side ("Revelation"), there's the only Fleetwood Mac song with Bob Welch playing bass...

...on the other ("Nightwatch"), you have the uncredited, albeit subtle, return of Peter Green to a Fleetwood Mac recording.

I think I lean toward "Revelation" due to Bob Weston's killer guitar fills & leads. Plus the more high-energy tempo of the song.

No question.........for me "Revelation" holds up better...On "Nightwatch"....I think I may have (in retrospect) trying to do "Sgt Pepper"....I.E...........the "kitchen sink" type production.....Some of those BG vocals were overdubbed 100 times ! Before Pro-Tools, this was a whole days work )

'Revelation" is also "bluesier", which is, I now realize, the kind of vocal I'm best at(for somebody who "really"....can't sing;-)

I also chose "Revelation" to re-record....I would NEVER re-record "Nightwatch".....

I love Nightwatch! It has that magical vibe that is similar to Future Games in my opinion. Revelation is a good song that kind of reminds me of Santana a little bit. At the end of the day I can listen to Nightwatch on repeat over and over.

It would be nice to hear from Bob some more about the Peter Green appearance on that song!

Pete just showed up at the studio)I think it was "Advision" studios, in London)...very quiet, didn't say much, maybe "'s'awright that one" (meaning....the song).....Mick asked if he wanted to play a little solo or.....? Pete said something like,
"nah....no solos.....put me in the (echo) chamber and I'll fiddle around a bit....So he went downstairs to where the echo chamber was (a large stone walled room with 2 mics in it) ...and fooled around for an hour or 2.

Totally low-key....

Bob Welch(missus)This is really cool information you're sharing with us Mr Welch! Someone like myself who's if u wanna call it, a "Younger" fan at 37, really appreciates your sharing these interesting stories. Your coming here and doing that only enhances this place. THANK YOU.

Why?! This, alongside "Remember Me," is my favorite Penguin song. The verses are so melodic and the harmonies are eerie and wonderful. I also love the way the song moves from a mid-tempo strum to this driving conclusion. Great lead guitar there from...Weston?

Christine had SO many songs , in those days , that could have/should have..been
"hits"...."Why", and "Remember Me" among them.........The fact that she DIDN'T "score" until "Over My Head", remains, and will remain, a "mystery to me" ;-)

I remember her having hits way back in 1968 with "When The Train Comes Back" and "I'd Rather Go Blind", being a member of Chicken Shack. :wavey:

All, to my ears, had "hit" potential...and aren't that far off from having a similar sound to her later songs that WERE hits ("Over My Head", "Say You Love Me", "Don't Stop", etc.)

Same thing with Bonnie Raitt back when she hit big with her Nick Of Time album...it didn't have a radically different sound than the previous 9 albums she'd released, in fact, it pretty much sounded JUST like her previous albums...yet it struck platinum, the others were fairly obscure. (except her Sweet Forgiveness album had the minor hit with her cool, bluesy cover of Del Shannon's "Runaway")

Christine even says as much on the Fleetwood Mac Live version of that song, where she introduces it as "The first single we ever had from the, uh, White Fleetwood Mac album."

You're so right about some of those early songs of hers--and a few by you and Kirwan. FM in those days was making great, relevant music. Why weren't more people listening?

When I tell people Fleetwood Mac was once a psychedelic band they haven't a clue what I'm talking about, and I play "Night Watch" for them and they go "Oh .... now I get it."

I've always had a liking for the psychedelic side of Fleetwood Mac, but I like the Mac in its pop mood even more. So my vote goes to "Revelation." I really like the drumming in that song.

Aleuzzi....Luck....timing...which side of the bed the promotion man got up on , on a particular morning......Given a level playing field (i.e....the music is "good, accessible "etc).....the music business ....is like going to Vegas...a total crapshoot, even for the "best" players;-)It's 50-50 odds. 50-50 +1......is the "hit"....

I used to love when I would watch a Cleveland Indians game.. they would cut to the commerical break with Ebony Eyes... I was the only kid on the block that knew who the artist was... but everyone knew the song...... that's good promo

Nightwatch is what I quintessentially LOVE about Bob Welch. I love the very meandering ethereal songs of his like this one. Makes me wish that he and Stevie could have worked within the confines of the Mac together at their prime. Coulda been some groovy stuff!
