omg, we get those huge garden spiders around here, they look like frickin' tarantulas~ last fall i was watching a movie w/ a blanket & i shook it out so i could cover up me feet & 1 came flying right out of it, i had been using it for at least an hour. so we were snuggling:eek:~
EEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!~

both of my brothers have tarantulas as pets along w/ other not so mainstream creatures~ i'll look at them but won't touch~ 1 of them got out & was missing for at least 6 months~ i wouldn't go over their house inside, all that time, i said they needed to find it alive or dead, but i wasn't coming over until either saw it back in the cage or it's carcus:lol:~ they eventually found it, & it was huge when it went missing it had doubled in size~ i always wondered what it was feasting on during it's adventure out to make it so huge:shrug:~

LOL. Too good. When I was a kid, I had a pet tarantula (as boys do) and it got out one day. I swear my Mom did not sleep for 2 days...course neither did I with all of my Mom's hysterics (bless).

Finally, my tarantula appeared in the kitchen, on top of the toaster. Weirdest place to find her, but glad to have her contained.

Oh! That just scared the sh*t out of me! I am so afraid of spiders! A couple of months ago me and my friend went out shopping and got ice cream, well we were on our way back to my house and I felt something crawl accross my hand, and there was this big honkin ass spider! I gasped really loud, threw my feet up on the dash board and reese cup bits went everywhere! So of course my friend screamed, we turned down a side street and got out of the car, and we couldn't find the spider!
I was shaking my shirt out, and my hair, and of course it was dark, so we couldn't see jack. Some guy was standing on the pourch and he walked over to us and asked us if we were ok. We never did find the spider!

A couple of years ago, I had woke up at 3:30 in the morning because one of my dogs had knocked over the baby gate into my room, and of course it made a loud crash. Well, thank goodness because I came face to face with a wolf spider on the wall (my bed USED TO BE up against the wall)! That damn thing had hair! Luckely there was a shoe on the other side of my bed so as the hair was standing straight up on my arms, I flung that shoe up against that wall so hard, I'm surprised I didn't dent it!
In September/October the spiders like to start coming in, and because I live way back in the wooded/ivy area, I don't get those normal yellow house spiders, I get these huge Indonisian hairy legged kabookie blood sucking rat killing things.

I came home from work today, and there by the back door was a nasty looking spider. I don't like to kill them even though they scare the crap out of me, but I stepped on it, and 1,000's of tiny spiders flew out of it!!!!! I nearly lost my mind! It looked like a horror movie!

Am I really the only one here that likes all creatures great and small?
Here's a fun story for the faint-of-heart - once I walked into my bedroom and noticed a huntsman spider (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huntsman_spider) in the top-left corner of my room. I tried to sweep it up with a dustpan, but it jumped away and ran under my bed. Two hours later I cared to mention it to my mum and stepdad, which subsequently resulted in them tearing my room apart in an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to find it. (Fortunately the only private possessions I have are a pair of disposable latex gloves that I keep strategically hidden in the loungeroom.) My room was later restored, and several hours later I went to bed. During the night I turned the light back on for some reason or other, and I happened to notice the spider on the ceiling in a different corner of my room. Once more I tried to sweep it up, and once more it jumped, this time in an unsuccessful attempt to land on my bed. It then ran on my bookshelf, and I was able to trap it and throw it outside. Despite knowing I removed it, for a few nights after my mum couldn't sleep in the room opposite me, and instead opted to sleep with David and keep him awake all night with her snoring.
All that said, I naturally hate any bugs crawling on me, and can instinctively flinch at seeing what I think are spiders (a prime example being, of all things, a small brass door-hinge of a cupboard door near my bedroom appearing like a spider in low light... it gets me every time!).

My husband feels this way. He will not kill anything, period. I've never had to test him with a cockroach, but I think he would probably feel badly about killing one. Any creepy crawler in our house gets a safe escort out the door. It's one of the things I admire and love most about him. :)

^ my heroine.

Today while mowing the grass (huge yard btw) I ride through this big
spider web full of those huge garden spiders. I think I made it
through without them getting on me. They have the strongest web I've
ever felt, and some of them get almost as big as a hand.

So taking a Gatorade break, I come in get refreshed to go back out.
And make a quick dash to the bathroom, and look up in the mirror,
and on top of my hat another SPIDER. He might be in
another world now. I'm not as nice as JannieC's husband.

It was unbelievably hot today. So sweating like crazy I crawl off the
mower to make my way to the shower. PG13 warning, I run down the
hall naked as a jaybird (I was home alone) to hop in the shower. Standing
there in the cool water I see dirt, pieces of grass and a worm wash
off of me down the drain.

So really it's been just another Alabama Summer Day.

(missladyloki the worm story was for you.....and it's true)

Another bug that freaks me out like nothing else are yellow jackets. Up by my school last fall, there was a yellow jacket problem and traps had been set up, but they were still all over the place.

One day, during Campus Lifetime (it's an hour and a half on Wednesdays where there's no class and events are held), I think either the gays and lesbians or the campus Republicans held a free barbecue (they both have done it then on separate weeks). As I was eating my food at an outside table, a yellow jacket decided to hang around my plate. I was absolutely freaking out and not even the blowing trick (gently blowing on one will make it think it's a breeze and move on) wasn't working and had t throw out my food just so it would leave me alone.

So you're saying a snake slid away from you, and you made the effort of chasing it down to kill it in a rather menacing manner? :( Expect little sympathy from me should you be bitten by one.
On Friday I was cleaning up leaves spread all about the backyard and over garden beds, and I revealed a rather small grey/black spider which made me jump back about a foot. It climbed up a plant and stayed out of the way though, so it was left alone.

If a snake is in the yard, or anywhere close to me off with it's head.

With that said, I have picked up a green snake with my hands and carefully
took it out of the yard. I'm not as bad as you might think. I'd just rather not
be around snakes.

On second thought, this post belongs in my snake thread.

When I have the guts to do anything other than sit on my bed and make noises that can only be likened to a murder victims, I'll have to change my underwear. I guess it's unlucky for me that my Cat also seems to have developed a vendetta against them and keeps attempting to bat them in my direction. Anybody have a good recipe for Cat Kebabs? This is spooky that I see this thread today. Spiders are about the biggest phobia in my life, and I've been dealing with it for a month, prior to my move to this house I now live in, I was able to move in gradually by doing most of the needed cleaning, myself. That, and signing a 3 year lease.
A long spider rant follows, but
a) I offer some solutions,
b) I have a couple questions (like, does wall to wall carpeting deter spiders?)
and 3*) please be kind, this has all happened to me with no painkillers!
* -- "a, b, and 3" is my 'Postcards From The Edge' nod.

SO, I recently moved into a house, built in the '50s, that hadn't been lived in for about 8 months. It got completely renovated, with a new kitchen, new windows, new appliances, but there were cobwebs and spiders in every room corner. There was a contractor as I moved in, who did the spider/cobweb thing outside of the house, I did the inside myself.
Got some bites, got rid of spiders, they'd come back, I'd get more bites-
This works: Lemon Pledge them. They hate lemon. Lavender liquid Pine Sol works, too, in keeping them away. A citrus Lysol spray is what I use on the windows, they hate citrus too, and have plenty of paper towels and trash bags and throw them out windows as you go along, then collect and dispose. The first and second floor now seem to be spider free, tomorrow is 2 weeks I've lived here. The Lemon Pledge seems to kill them. (This house has 30 freaking windows! Spiders love windows!)
I avoid the basement. I have only ventured to the basement once. And that's where the washer and dryer are. It looks fine, but I haven't looked under the basement doors that lead to outside, and that's where the spiders will be. I hate basement double doors. Spider country clubs.
I go to a laundramat, and to my parents house with laundry. I can't deal.
I just stopped thinking about spiders, only today. Then, I saw this thread!
I hate, loathe and despise spiders. They scare me beyond words. I'm hiring someone- maybe tomorrow!-- to go down into the basement and super clean it, I won't do it.
Oh, and now I won't keep my vacuum cleaner in the house. It's a bagless, but I'm sure there's spiders in it. It's now an entry-way vacuum. I'll buy a new vaccum and use the current one just to vacuum the back-entry way. A eucalyptus wreath I placed on the floor by the front door also seems to work in keeping spiders away.
This house is too big for me, I need a wife and some kids! Or maybe I could get an exterminator to move in.
Seriously, though, it's 'spider season'? -- and it ends in October? I hope that is so.
Does anyone know if having wall-to-wall carpeting helps get rid of spiders forever? I never once in 15 years saw a spider at my apartment that was all carpeted.
Here, nothing but wood floors on both floors of the house, except for the bathrooms, hate it.
Even in the huge kitchen, a wood floor. Dust mops, Mop & Glow, dry Swifter, wet Swifter, f**k. Sorry.
And I'm way overdue for the Lyme's Disease bloodtest I've needed to take since June unrelated to any of this.
Now, I won't go much into the wet-dry vac I used on the fireplace on August 16 and still have unhealed skin on the side of my nose that got covered in soot and then blistered, when the hose fell out of the vac and the fireplace ashes went all through the house and in my face. Spent a good 40 hours cleaning all the floors, walls and cielings before moving in on Sept. 1 with my cat. I had to make sure the house was safe for her.
The house is clean. Spiders are gone. I don't need a Xanax. SEAL that inside basement door in the kitchen at the bottom with duct tape before bed tonight. Do the Swifter again.
Hey, you guys put a spider thread here! It is so strange I just saw it now. Y'all don't know from spiders after the month I've put into getting this place liveable :)
I want a mosquito net for over my bed, didn't Stevie have one in the 'If Anyone Falls'video? Or was that Cher in the 'We All Sleep Alone' video? Do the nets keep spiders out, too?
F*ck me with a chainsaw, then cut off my head, put it on a stick and let the spiders build cobwebs ear to ear. I DO need a Xanax, immediately. I won't take it, however.
But, just remember about the Lemon Pledge and LAVENDER Lysol liquid, it repels spiders, and seems to keep them away. I think. Spider season ??
Yes, it is very wooded here. And yes, I see new cobwebs outside in the back yard nearly every day. The yard guy's on it. The inside, though, is up to me. Just a renter.

No carpet doesn't deter them. And I'd never heard of the Lemon Pledge thing.

It's okay now. I slapped it with my copy of Storms by CAD (finally found a use for it lol). Just a shame its stanky corpse fell down my shirt when I did it. I jumped off of my bed and shook so hard I may just have brain damage. I destroyed 6, count 'em SIX Spiders last night in the space of a half hour. Not good :(

iamnotafraid's right. Carpets do nothing to repel Spiders. We have all carpets and they still terrorise me. I heard that placing Conkers in the corners of the room and near the windows helps deter them. If that's true, next summer I'm changing my address to 123 Conker Tree. I swear they're mutants compared to the small ones I had last year :s

What's a conker? I'll google it, then head back to the Home Depot and ask for the conker aisle. That's a new word for me.

Don't be traumatized, JannieC. WalMart has a 2 pack of huge Lavender Pine Sol bottles for like 5 bucks. The Lemon Pledge works really well, too.
If I can help it, I will never be without either item for the rest of my life! Though, the Lavender Pine Sol may be seasonal, I better stock up.

Iamnotafraid, your Peter Parker & swollen abdomen references are over my head! Google, here I come!
Is it some kind of childhood poem or something? I wasn't born in the U.S. and sometimes, some very basic things, I just don't know!
Oh, the "open" windows do have screens I certainly did not lift up!! :) I wanted to see if the 'ledge' of the windows, where the spiders would recur, would stay spider-free and they did, with a few squirts of the Lavender Pine Sol and the bottle opened propped against one of the four screens. The 'stay away' scent worked!
PS Edit: Okay, got it, Peter Parker is from the SpiderMan comic books.

I now have a small 'squirt bottle' filled with the Lavender Pine Sol that I use, and close the door. (My cat) --
The Lemon Pledge works really well, too.
If I can help it, I will never be without either item for the rest of my life! Though, the Lavender Pine Sol may be seasonal, I better stock up.
When in October does spider season end??
Thank You to iamnotafraid and to Silver Springs for answering my questions in their replies.

I think I actually *have* some Lavender Pine Sol under the sink. I will investigate.

Isn't there some ridiculous factoid about always being within 6 inches of a spider, at all times? (I just tried to Google this to find out and got hit with way too many spider sites. *SHUDDER*)

Spiders horrify me to a degree that's almost absurd.

A few years back my boyfriend called me at work to tell me that a huge spider had crawled down the wall and disappeared behind our bed. When I freaked out and asked him why he let it get away, he told me that not only was it the size of a silver dollar (wolf spider, I presume) but that it was smoking a cigarette and asked him if he'd seen me around, and that he was looking for me.

That night I tore the bedroom apart looking for that spider, but never found it.

Thankfully I've moved since then.

if someone you know and love is terrified of spiders, never play practical jokes on them involving the ugly creepy little critters! there is a short film on youtube...i wont post it here, but if you wanna see what can happen if you do, search 'spider blue tongue films' on youtube. fair warning...its kinda graphic near the end.

Only quarter sized? Pffft you should see some down here in Florida.

What I most commonly see (esp. now that Spring and Summer are here) are huge, fat, furry wolf spiders and boy they're nothing you want under your covers at night. You have to do the nightly shaking and checking of your bed down here for unwanted sleepmates.

I haven't seen a Banana spider yet this year but as frightening as they look, they really keep to themselves and don't bother you if left alone, which I do. They're fascinating to look at really. I have heard their webs are nothing you want to accidentally walk into and they are known to trap small birds in them.

http://i1229.photobucket.com/albums/ee466/fringedNfab/bananaspider.jpg

I had never seen a spiny spider like this in Ohio ever but they're all over down here in Florida. I have one that made it's web in the corner of the lanai out back and it never bothers anyone so I just leave it there. I think things crawl under the lanai screen door sometimes and get in. I try not to kill anything unless it becomes bothersome and some tiny spider in the corner is a good thing to have down here I think to trap the occasional mosquito or something if they get in. So I leave them be if they leave me. If something gets in my house, that's a different story.

Ok. I'm seriously freaking out! I HATE spiders with a passion! Is anyone else scoping out the area around them while reading these posts?!

A couple days ago my best friend (who lives with me) decided to give his pet tarantula a late snack. Instead of giving the damn thing a cricket, he decides to open up the window in my room and capture a big spider that's been nesting outside in its web. He grabbed it with some tissue paper, pulled it through the window, and then dropped it on the floor. I was screaming and jumping all around because the spider was trying to run under my bed! He finally picked it up and threw it into the clutches of the tarantula (Its cage is in the garage because it's sure as Hell not living inside).

I hate spiders too! Luckily the only big ones I ever see are tarantulas and those are usually in the middle of the night crossing dirt roads, but never in my house. When I was a kid tho, we used to get black widows EVERYWHERE around our house. My and my sister would go play in the backyard and find black widows in our toys all the time and kill them. I'm surprised they never killed us.

.

We had banana spiders all over where I grew up. I used to save them some of my supper as a kid... they weren't interested.

I came across another kind a few times as a kid, not sure what it was, but it might be that wolf spider you mentioned. The first time I saw one was pretty memorable. We had an elderly neighbour who'd payed me and my older brother and sister to clear out a huge pile of bricks that had been sitting in his back yard for about twenty years. We came across lots of creatures that day; loads of garter snakes, salamanders and one cottonmouth  but this thing freaked me out more than anything I'd ever seen. I had taken my gloves off because they were too big, so the first brick I lift naturally has a monster spider under it
Anyway, I climbed to the top of the pile and as soon as I touched the brick something furry grabbed my hand, so I fell backwards out of shock right into the wheel barrow. The spider crawled onto the top of the pile and that's when we saw that its rear abdomen was COVERED IN SPIDER BABIES! I'm talking easily a hundred. Blegh.

My sister ran away screaming, but my brother decided to attack with the hand shovel and he smashed it... but it was a windy day out.. and large portion of the babies took to the air. Turns out my sister had the right idea, because we both got covered in baby spiders. Thankfully there was a coulee nearby(we immediately jumped in it) and we didn't get bit somehow, but I still get chills when I remember that.

The female wolf spiders carry their babies for so long on their backs. A hefty looking one was on the outside of the lanai screen one morning last Summer and was carrying around it's egg sac underneath which is what those spiders do. They carry it everywhere. But I wanted it off the screen and away from the house so I went and got a shovel and carefully scooped it up and it was more interested in holding onto those babies than me trying to scoop it up but I eventually got ahold of it in the shovel and took it over into the scrub next door and gently dumped it on a tree limb and it scurried away. I try not to kill things unless they're actually harming me or a danger once they're in my house or something. Like I said, that's another story once they're inside my house. :distress:

I agree. I hate killing things unless I have to(or it's a cockroach, they don't count). We had a wasp stuck inside the store I work at yesterday, and everybody was trying to smash it when it came by. I just caught it with an empty glass and let it go.

My brother has had this philosophy since the incident when the spider as well. :D

Otherwise they'll just die inside the house and you'll find them later.

So...I'm moving in May, and I went to my garage a few mintes ago to bring in boxes and lids from my last move.

I was expecting a big 'ole spider colony to be inhabiting them...but...

...fortunately I only found one spider, which I promptly dumped on the garage floor and watched him scurry away.
