View Full Version : Sans Crow, Fleetwood Mac To Tour In 2009

In the wake of Lindsey Buckingham's latest solo project, Fleetwood Mac is gearing up for a tour in early 2009 that will likely be followed by a new band album.
Buckingham -- who releases "Gift of Screws" on Sept. 16 via Warner Bros. and begins a solo tour Sept. 7 in Saratoga, Calif. -- tells Billboard.com that Fleetwood Mac will convene in January to begin rehearsing for the tour, whose itinerary is currently being assembled. It will be the group's first outing since promoting the "Say You Will" album in 2003 and 2004.
"There was no sense we had to jump right in the studio," Buckingham reports. "I think maybe there was even a sense that we would make a better album if we went out and hung out together first on the road ... maybe even sowing some seeds musically that would get us more prepared to go in the studio rather than just going in cold. It takes the pressure (off) from having to go in and make something cold."
Contrary to previous reports, however, the Fleetwood Mac tour will not include Sheryl Crow, who spoke of the possibility of being part of the group while promoting her most recent album, "Detours." Buckingham says the matter "kinda got out of hand," though there were discussions between the Fleetwood Mac members and Crow. Ultimately, he says, the prospect "just kind of lost its momentum."
"I think with Stevie (Nicks) ... maybe to some degree there was a little too much testosterone on stage when we went out in 2003," Buckingham notes, "and I think the band was looking to kind of balance that out a little bit.
"I think the good side has been, for Stevie, she came to a point of clarity where she realized the most appropriate thing we could do as a band was to create what needs to be created in the context of the four of us. That's been a real positive, and it's been a real rallying point for all of us, too."
The Fleetwood Mac rhythm section of drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie appears on three songs on "Gift of Screws," which was the title of a solo album Buckingham was working on before Fleetwood Mac decided to record "Say You Will."

So, now they're going to tour a little and do an album while they're on the road?? This seems odd.

Well that just made my day, haha, and no..I don't think mthey will make the album during the tour on the road besides the concept of jamming during rehearsals, and like lindsey and stevie have done before, write their own songs in the hotel rooms, and bring it in to the studio at a later time....Iand weird but true, i just had a premonition that Lindsey is going to make this new album more "Fleetwood Macky" than previous...I hope my psychic skills don't fail me!

before SYW or before THE DANCE? I thought the songs they were working, (and Lindsey mentioned when he introduces Bleed to love her in the Dance original show) were supposedly for GOS..

Waiting to record an album will give them plenty of time to interview/consider a new producer.

Sheryl should repeatedly insinuate that she's going to join Fleetwood Mac, piss off lots of people, retract her statement, and continue doing this in an endless cycle.
Because, it'll be, you know, funny. :blob2:

I agree. However, history demonstrates that they likely will pull out a rarely heard gem or two. For example, we got Oh Daddy, The Farmer's Daughter, and Silver Springs on The Dance. We got Beautiful Child on SYW plus some other stuff played but then dropped. So, maybe they'll follow suit and do a different set with something like Seven Wonders, Storms, etc. I mean they likely will drop one or two of the SYW songs as well as Beautiful Child.

I agree that this is the best possible news. It discredits that other thread about the compilation and farewell tour bull**** thatll last 2 years. This is they'll tour make and album and tour again. So now for the 09 tour with no new material they'll have to do some rarer ****.

Good news! Looks like we're going to have an awesome show to see next year with a full? studio album to follow. I agree with Lindsey about the band sowing the seeds of some music together on the road as opposed to bringing their individual songs into the studio to be worked on. I think that will add greatly to creating a truer band sound.
Bad news. Empty wallets.

Well, if this is a "farewell" tour, making a record after the fact doesn't make sense!!
Besides, what happens if Stevie and Lindsey get sick of each other again as they have a history of doing?
WE suffer the consequences!!!
I WANT NEW MAC MUSIC but I dont want them beating the hell out of one another in the studio!!!!

Well, that's the thing. I have no doubt that touring together will give them both fodder for new song material, but I do think the touring experience will make it harder for them to go into the studio AFTER the tour than it would be before.
The only thing I can say is that because this tour will last a looong time, maybe they can record an album during a break -- which would be impossible for them to do. We'll never get something as fast as the White album again. But that's the only way I can see this working. First leg without new material. Then throw an album out there and tour with "new" music the 2nd leg. At least that way, they will have a much better excuse for saturating the market -- by revisiting so many tour cities-- than they did in 2004.

Well, now we don't know how long this tour will be. . . but your scenario makes sense. It will certainly be tour-album-tour. Recording songs on the go and jamming on the road might allow that break to be relatively short. A good producer -- Timbaland! hollah!! -- will also help. That said, I think all those "rumours" started by that heavy metal band should be thrown out the window -- so there's no need to suspect this will be a loooong farewell tour.
. . . sigh, does anyone else ever listen to "Shut Us Down" and imagine it as a Lindsey-Stevie duet?

I don't think a farewell tour is discredited at all. And, how much freaking longer do you think they will tour? I think they should stop now. By God, I don't want an 80 year old Stevie Nicks out there spinning around on her Rascal. They owe us a farewell tour. A nice one.

I concur given their history I would prefer they make the new album first then if they have a huge row and refuse to tour with each other no big deal IMO .However if the row is on a tour and then they refuse to make the album I would be upset..I would MUCH rather have a new album than another tour.
I say, let's just let it happen. They have plans to do something next year, and that's a start.

Well there is a prescedence for this when you think about it. I mean, hadnt Fleetwood Mac began recording some of Tusk when they went on the road in the summer of 1978?
Also, I'm going to make a prediction here. I really think Fleetwood Mac will not be as dumb ad the Eagles and try to completely rape the fans with ticket prices. The SYW tour top ticket was $125 if I remember, and I dont see it going above $150 for this new tour. Just my 2 cents:)

Sheryl Crow Not Flying With Fleetwood Mac
Natalie Finn
Thu Jul 24, 12:14 PM ET
Los Angeles (E! Online) - Sheryl Crow and Fleetwood Mac have stopped thinking about a shared tomorrow.
Just as frontman Lindsey Buckingham was confirming that his band's 2009 tour would proceed without the "All I Wanna Do" songstress, Crow came full circle on the rumor that she started in March, when she told a music website that she and the '70s-era hitmakers "definitely" had plans to collaborate.
"No, that was those Rumours— to quote the album," the singer-songwriter told a group of Nashville college students Wednesday at a Grammys Foundation Q&A session when asked about her future Fleetwood plans.
"I'm a huge fan and have a great relationship with Stevie [Nicks], and actually with all of them. I just absolutely adore them," added Crow, who has produced for Nicks and provided backup vocals and instrumentals for a number of tracks on the Fleetwood den mother's 2001 solo album Trouble in Shangri-La.
She also eased up on the assurances: "I think their next album may be while I'm on the road," she said. "Hopefully in the future we'll have some kind of collaboration, but not at this time."
Her comment earlier this year left Fleetwood Mac a bit puzzled, with Buckingham telling Billboard.com in March that he and his fellow bandmates were "all a little surprised" at her announcement.
But, hers "was certainly a name that has come up. We'll have to see," he graciously added.
Now, however, it's clear that Fleetwood Mac has decided to go its own way. Buckingham, who's heading out on a solo tour Sept. 7 in support of his upcoming album Gift of Screws, told Billboard.com yesterday that the whole Crow business "kinda got out of hand."
Although he and Nicks and the rest spoke with the Detours purveyor, the idea—which partly sprang from the band's belief that there may have been "a little too much testosterone on stage when we went out in 2003"—"just kind of lost its momentum."
Keyboardist and singer Christine McVie left the group in the late 1990s, leaving Nicks as its sole female member.

No doubt Azoff will try to squeeze every penny he can out of fans but I think the Eagles can get away with charging more unless Christine was to return which will never happen ..I guess the new album is almost guaranteed then given the Faustian deal the band must have signed with him.

There's no animosity left really...I talk to Mick often...Stevie and Lindsey never had anything at all to do with the lawsuit; it was all "pre" them...
But I don't think they will ever take me on the road....why should they? The S/L lineup was THE (most) successful lineup........that lineup has the best known "body of work".
Maybe, at some time in the future, there might be a 1 time only type HBO (or something) show as a Rumours/Pre-Rumours/Post Rumours "get together/"reunion".
But that , if it ever happens at all, probably won't happen until I'm 70ish.....like.....7 years from now !!!!!!!???????( Oh......My.....Gawd..."7" years...and I'll be 70 ????????????????????????????????????????????;-):(

It's nice to know that everyone is on good terms. And I'm awaiting the day when you and some of the pre-rumours lineup can walk out on that stage again and remind the masses that there was a lot of extraordinary music made before Lindsey and Stevie joined FM. Bob, you're one of my favorite members of FM. Some of the music you've made with them will always be revisited by this old boy. "Hypnotized", "Sentimental Lady", "Silver Heels", "Future Games", "The Ghost" are all personal favorites of mine. And I realy like a lot of your solo music too, especially "Church". I could go on and name a lot more of your songs, but I'll just stop and say thanks Bob for your contributions to my favorite band in the whole world. And thanks for chatting with us fans. :wavey:

There's no animosity left really...I talk to Mick often...Stevie and Lindsey never had anything at all to do with the lawsuit; it was all "pre" them...
But I don't think they will ever take me on the road....why should they? The S/L lineup was THE (most) successful lineup........that lineup has the best known "body of work".
Maybe, at some time in the future, there might be a 1 time only type HBO (or something) show as a Rumours/Pre-Rumours/Post Rumours "get together/"reunion".
But that , if it ever happens at all, probably won't happen until I'm 70ish.....like.....7 years from now !!!!!!!???????( Oh......My.....Gawd..."7" years...and I'll be 70 ????????????????????????????????????????????;-):(
Best,
Bob ("Bobbiee")Welch:D:laugh:Well, just know that there are alot of fans out there, myself included Mr Welch that truly appreciate your years of service to Fleetwood Mac! A tip of the cap to you. You know, I have Nightwatch and Revelation from the Penguin album on my personal cd of my fav Mac songs. a great pair of songs from that album indeed!

So...a Geritol Generation concert?
OK. I'd watch. Any chance of having Lawrence Welk bubble machines in the background? :D

I have an idea...I'll have sex-reassignment surgery, and go on the road with them as "Bobbie" Welch ;-)
Question.....Should I go "C" cup, or "D" cup ?? ;-)

Crow takes some 'Detours'
By ALAN SCULLEY, 8/01/2008
Sheryl Crow knows the days of her albums routinely selling million of copies have passed. With downloading and file sharing, record sales are down significantly in every genre.
She no longer expects to get her songs played on commercial radio, either. Satellite radio and National Public Radio are now her main outlets for airplay.
"I think pop radio is very driven by beats, by young artists, a lot of dance music, a lot of rap -- well not rap, I guess, but R&B," Crow said in a phone interview. "It's just a different time. It's about what sells, and it's much more difficult to get on pop radio..
"The best I can do is make records that matter to me, that I think have integrity," she said. "And just trust that there will always be a need for singer-songwriters, and it's not all about dance music."
Crow's latest CD, "Detours," is widely seen as the most personal and outspoken of her career. It comes after a challenging three-year period that saw her much-publicized romance with cyclist Lance Armstrong end in early 2006, followed just days later by the news that she had breast cancer and needed to undergo what was described as "minimally invasive surgery," followed by radiation treatment.
On the brighter side, Crow, 46, adopted a baby boy, Wyatt, last spring and said she is relishing her life as a mother.
"I couldn't even begin to know that it was going to be as wonderful as it is," she said. "I'm really lucky that he's a very curious child, very game, and a good little traveler. Just a healthy and happy, joyful little guy. So it just makes every day like Christmas."
Crow said having - and beating -- cancer made her feel it was time to adopt. Facing cancer also prompted her to take stock of her life.
Some of that came out in "Detours." That much is apparent on the title song, which addresses how people -- even if they have a plan for life -- can get sidetracked.
"I think that's an experience that happens to all of us, when we have a pretty strong sense of what it is our course is meant to be, and then we realize one day we're very far away from that," Crow said.
Social and political concerns also filter into a good number of the new songs.
"Gasoline" is a futuristic tale of oil and greed. "Peace Be Upon Us" laments the misguided motivations of war. And several songs (including "Motivation" and "God Bless This Mess") touch on the idea that people have become too distracted with their own lives to care about the problems of the nation and the world.
And yes, a few songs deal with romantic struggles. There has been speculation that three songs in particular -- "Now That You're Gone," "Drunk With The Thought Of You"
and "Diamond Ring" -- are about the Armstrong breakup. But Crow cautioned against taking that narrow a view.
"I think the experiences of those songs are very universal," she said. "I've been in several relationships that have ended up being really learning experiences for me. I wouldn't say that everything was relegated to the Lance relationship.
"There's a lot to be learned from all your relationships. So I definitely could not say those were specific to him."
Crow is clearly pleased with how "Detours" turned out, and plans to showcase a healthy chunk of the new material in her live shows.
"We will definitely do a lot of familiar stuff, and a fair amount of the new stuff, just because it's so timely and it's translating well live," said Crow, who said she is taking out the largest band she's used in years, complete with a pair of backing vocalists.
As for one other rumored live venture - touring with Fleetwood Mac next spring - it turns out that Crow will not be part of that venture, despite earlier reports. Fleetwood Mac has just announced preliminary plans to tour early in 2009 without her.
"I'm not really sure how that rumor got started," Crow said. "I don't know how my quote got attached to me that we were definitely doing it. That's not the case."
Sheryl Crow will perform with James Blunt and Toots and the Maytals at the Mann Center for the Performing Arts (52nd and Parkside, Philadelphia) on Aug. 2 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $49.50 to $85.
