Lindsay Buckingham: "Holiday Road"
Despite being the creative force behind Fleetwood Mac's hitmaking incarnation and scoring a No. 9 single on Billboard's Hot 100 pop singles chart with 1981's "Trouble," Buckingham never had the solo impact of bandmate Stevie Nicks. Too bad. He further showcased his artistic reach with this retro-'50s pop-rocker from 1983's National Lampoon's Vacation, which deserved to go much higher than No. 82. That sexy "oh oh ohoh ohoh" refrain is still sweet music to my ears.

So many people know the song that it's surprising to me that it only reached 82. I think more people know it than know Trouble. I guess they bought the movie soundtrack more than the single. Michele

It only became ubiquitous over time, with repeated airings/viewings of the movie (the song was also used in European/Vegas Vacation too). There's no doubt that more people know it NOW than know Trouble, but at the time, not as much.

I hear bits of it on the radio several times a day on the Ford truck commercials.

Rush Limbaugh also plays it at least once a day on his show. He called it the "finest bumper music anywhere". He's also a self-confessed Stevie fan.

Hey! Rush is cool and reaches about 20 million listeners a week, including myself. Why ick if he's giving Lindsey and Stevie more exposure?

“Holiday Road” was the theme song of National Lampoon’s Vacation, an insanely popular movie, the kind of ’80s comedy classic that gets run on cable and local stations with a frequency matched only by Caddyshack or Arthur. This is a well-known song, and from what I can tell, an agreeable, well-liked song, which makes it kind of confusing that this song was not actually a hit.
Perhaps it’s because of the incredibly depressing music video that doesn’t offer any clips of the movie, which was the style at the time, nor does it match the song’s bouncy tone. It does, however, reflect the song’s dark lyrics—this is, after all, a Lindsey Buckingham song with nobody from Fleetwood Mac around to reign him in.
Adding to this song’s lack of success is that it’s from 1983. This was a period of renewed interest in and popularity for Fleetwood Mac and its members, not seen since Rumoursmania swept America’s over-30 and cocaine-using populations six years prior. The band itself had just had huge hits with “Hold Me” and “Gypsy,” and Stevie Nicks ‘ solo career was blowing up. There was no place for Buckingham—there was no room in the collective consciousness for a third variation of the same thing. Plus, we’d all been burned, hard, by Tusk.
“Holiday Road,” which should probably have been titled “Holiday Road (Theme from National Lampoon’s Vacation)” reached #82 on the pop chart.

What the hell is the music video like? I don't think I've ever seen it..
On the Rush L. thing, I don't want to get terribly into it, but I'll leave it with the fact that Lindsey's political and social viewpoints are largely dissimilar to Rush's.

I think you can view the video on the link to the article. It's on Youtube. I don't fit into this machinized environment. They will regiment the life and originality out of you I like the video and it's in keeping with Lindsey's other video themes, which I wouldn't have expected, due to the movie tie.

Just saw the Twizzlers commercial with Holiday Road in it today. The sped up vocal reminded me of something Lindsey himself would do.

GEICO uses it in commercials lately. I couldn't help but think, so much for artistic purity when there are three kids being raised in LA and a wife with a penchant for 20 million dollar homes every few years!

The home Lindsey bought didn't cost $20 million. He sold his old house on the hill for $19,000,000. I mean, who knows how much Kristen spent on decorating. Maybe it was $20,000,000 after all was said and done but Lindsey made quite a profit on the sell of his old home.
If he had to put a song in a commercial, I was glad it was Holiday Road. I don't want GEICO to use Go Your Own Way next, though.

I did the old house on zillow and even though it sold for $19.5 it has now gone down in value. Even so, the monthly payment estimates were mindblowiing. I hope it was paid for by the time Lindsey sold it.

I find Zillow to be consistently unrealistically low in its estimated prices. When we have bought or sold a house it has been off quite a bit. Not sure how they are doing their calculations...
However, 13 million or 19 million, it's still a ballpark I won't be playing in!

Caught this commercial TWICE today. This song has always been a favorite of mine and, while it won't make me buy my insurance from Geico, it makes me enjoy the commercial break more!

It was played here (Seattle) for a commercial for Toyota and Twizzlers.
